  • In this episode, we attempt to further diagnose and repair our 2011 BMW e70 x5 diesel with the legendary M57 engine.
    I've experienced misdiagnosis of vehicles in the past, it's inevitable but this vehicle was no different. The engine was given a terminal diagnosis by a local shop (two actually!) and vehicle, destined for the scrap yard. Fortunately for us, their diagnosis was beyond wrong and the vehicle will be put back into service!
    Stay tuned to watch the repair and outcome!

    Amazing! I have the same x5 pre LCI with m57 twin turbo. Just bought it recently with 450k km on clock. It leaks some oil on the left side of the engine, will be taking to the mechanic to see what’s the issue.
    Apart from that it had timing chain changed, two injectors restored, downpipe installed, egr and swirlflap delete, and R90 fuel pump installed. It’s at stage 1 with 335hp. Drives very nicely.

    For future reference, crack the line on injector 1 anytime you open the fuel system. Once you get fuel tighten the nut and she fires right up 👍

      Hi Eddy, are you in Kenya? Want to ask you for some advice with your experience on m57. Got some parts coming that I need to fit and then I'm looking for a remap...could you give me some recommendations especially for a timing belt change which is above my pay grade 😂😂😂 would appreciate your advice? Thank you sir

    Injector 6 really only goes bad if the cowls are bad and leaking water onto injector 5 and 6.

    For info, those type of hose clamps on the EGR pipe are very common on aircraft turbine engines. Other diesel engines recommend the injector is removed with the engine at operating temp. Do not know if that would help here. I am about to do a set of preheaters on my N57 shortly but have not replaced any injectors on either of my M57's yet but they have not got the KM's of yours. Here in Australia, all LCI E70's (after 2010 to 2013) all have the later N57 engine and the ZF8HP70. I would certainly drop the transmission filter and check the pan for metal then change mechatronic seals (I assume you have the nth america market ZF6HP28X?). Don't let the torque converter clutch wear out, if you keep the car after checking the pan for metal, I would be getting the torque converter overhauled. I like to minimise nasty surprises in X5 Beemers I do not know the history of.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  Месяц назад

      absolutely! I've already told myself if the 6hp tskes a dirt nap, I'll be swapping in an 8hp.
      I wonder if it would be easier to remove at temp too, I do know that soaking or for multiple weeks with Kroil helped immensely.

    Nice job. That engine should keep going for another 450kms. You need to block off the EGR at the exhaust manifold as the EGR cooler can overheat and catch fire.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  3 месяца назад +3

      good to know! this was temporary, I'll definitely get some plugs and block it off at the manifold! it's leaking a touch so it'll get done sooner than later.

  • @mediocreman2

    The reason you have troubles with number six is possibly because of your failed cowls. When they fail, they leak and the water gets down into five and six injectors. So make sure you buy some replacement cowl pieces or else you'll be back at it again soon.
    These don't see much carbon in the intake. Also delete and tune if you can.

    I replaced the flappers at 170k and it was full of soot on our 4 cylinder N47.
    If you want to source a new intake manifold, check out Darkside Developments in the UK.
    Adding an oil catch can or adding meth injection is the best way to avoid soot building up again. Meth injection adds power because it cools the intake temperature and adds fuel to the mixture.

    • @hexagonosaurus5848
      @hexagonosaurus5848 3 месяца назад

      meth on a daily driver loool, a new intake manifold can be found at the nearest BMW dealer. Flaps should just be deleted. Pointless company promotion, pathetic.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  3 месяца назад

      I thought about a catch can but can't find a definitive thread on how to hook one up on the 2011+ M57!
      good tips though!

    • @brarautorepairs
      @brarautorepairs 3 месяца назад +1

      @@hexagonosaurus5848 yes there is nothing wrong with adding water meth. The kit is $500, works really well on a diesel engine and snow performance kit allows for better fuel economy by adding small amounts of meth plus extra under load.

    • @brarautorepairs
      @brarautorepairs 3 месяца назад +1

      @@hexagonosaurus5848 flaps shouldn't be deleted. They allow for better low end power, fuel economy and emissions. The swirl effect allows for better fuel air mixture at low ending speeds. Deleting it doesn't give you any benefit. The new revision is better than the factory for the swirl flaps. Those flaps break because they have a hard time shutting against soot building up in the intake.
      A new intake manifold is the only way to fix this on the M57 engine. Darkside sells them for $200. You can source them locally but the cost is much higher

      @tony.nextlevelrides  Месяц назад

      lmao, they must be talking about the N57 and not the M57. the later "N" variant was plagued with issues and shouldn't be confused with the reliability of the M57!
      swirl flap issues are on European models, not in North America. even then, the mod is so unbelievably easy to complete.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides

      We used Protools with an MHD adapter to code the injector and reset the adaptations (dial-in, adaption wheel thing?) and to monitor cylinder fueling / roughness.
      As for the special sauce to clean the intake manifold, we initially tried Dawn dish soap and moved onto the special stuff that you can purchase from a pump at the petrol station nearest you. ;)
