Dr. Black clearly articulates the reasons we NEED our elders. We need their memories, stories, laughter and tears. We don’t need to stand on their shoulders but put ourselves on the roads they paved for US!!!

I was lucky enough to be in Dr Black's class as a 17yr old, and I just wish I understood his message then as I do now. He poured so much into us but at the time I couldn't see it. Now years down the road it's clear as day. He made us sing all of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' every morning. He was laying a foundation to help mold what was coming, and not just coming for me. Highly doubt he remembers me, but I'll never for get him.

Made me hum a few bars of “Take Me To The Water”, let me know I was thinking correctly concerning doing my best to give back and lift up those who are to carry on. It seems that Dr. Black understands that as the original humans to walk this earth we have a spiritual connection to the universe that few can fathom and that is what allows us to consistently make a way out of no way.

Dr. Black I hear you… and as a Black woman born in Cuba bound by that ancestral force, I am forever reminded of who “I am”, the roots of my existence (not necessarily where I was born), but rather where we ended. And, these belief systems that we carry and pass on generationally represent that superpower we seldom know or acknowledge. I believe that in the middle passage these different groups of people enjoined their beliefs, or rather their existence as one to not only survive the journey but to survive on land! I read the Middle Passage in college, but this book The Coming, has to be added to my reading cannon.

Dr. Black & Prof. Hunter - When we read this book for Knubia's Africana Studies, I got it at the last minute on Kindle. The words were SO POWERFUL that even the voice of that automated white dude couldn't quench the power. And a few times, I had to turn him off, sit down and read it for myself. After what you said about your Grandmother here, we know now why the cadence goes through us. It's a shoutin' book! Stay blessed.

  • @nazimrashid2935

Karen, my spirit was following Dr Black every step of the way. When he was saying, basically to himself, that he had to calm himself down, I understood what he meant. You asked him, "Why?" This is a church tradition where when the 'spirit' starts to overwhelm you, you have to calm yourself down or the spirit will overtake you and then the only thing you can do is shout and give testimony to God. So, at that stage, you can't talk intelligently only emotionally, THIS is why you have to tell yourself to calm down so you can continue to dialogue intelligently. I was right with him and understood him. I was brought up in the black Baptist church and I understood the traditions, so I followed Dr. Black excitedly.

I was introduced to Dr. Black, a couple of years ago, when he and Dr. Carr exchanged dialogue on Elevate Atlanta. I burst into tears listening to these beautiful minds providing my spirit with nourishment. I have loved this brotha ever since! Each day that goes by, each breadcrumb I consume, strengthens my blackness exponentially, as I continue embracing my evolution in this revolution!
And Prof. Hunter, you may not be a "Doctor" by title, but you have definitely been doing the work of one! This is the healing we need as a people--as human beings, period! I am glad that forces, like Dr. Black, Dr. Carr, yourself, and many others exist in this space; an inspiration for us to navigate through, and, ultimately, combat the chaos!
    Thank you! 😢

Prof. Hunter and Dr. Black, thank you both for another enlightened experience. I have always felt that I carry the pain, sadness, strength, courage and will to survive given to us by our ANCESTORS within me. It is not a burden, but an HONOR that I am a DESCENDANT of our ANCESTORS who have more than proven our SPIRITUALITY and STRENGTH! Both of you are perfect examples of why CRT is being banned throughout the United States. Should many of us begin to reaffirm our HERITAGE, things will begin to change mentally for African Americans collectively. I truly believe that. The subliminal oppression has gotten so many caught up in a horrible state of mind.
