    love your channel . you have some great videos . I thought I would let you know what caused that shaft to break like it did. I am a retired millwright/ Industrial mechanic I got a quick look at that piece of shaft that broke and can tell you that sometime in the past that some one way over heated that shaft way to hot very probably to get the fly wheel off and then while it was still very hot quenched way too quickly more than likely hit it with a water hose thereby re-tempering the metal making it too brittle and causing it to break like glass from a blow from your hammer or maybe cracked from the shock of the wreck its self. This is why mechanics or other people who are not experienced with the tempering of tool steel are warned about heating metal and bearings too hot with a with a torch and then quenching too quickly with water it can make the metal very hard and brittle.That is what gives it that sandy look inside like you see in the piece of shaft in your hand. You will find that same sandy look in any tool steel metal that breaks or chips. you can see this in badly tempered chisels, hardened bolts, nails, screws drill bits, bearings and so forth. If you have to heat a coupling, gear, or bearing to install or remove it because of the need of a tight fit damage or rust it does not need to be heated all that hot especially for installment. once you get it above boiling temp you have about all the expansion you are going to get. use a temp stick , used in welding or heating they are very cheap or simply spit on the object and when it bubbles and hops it is ready to be installed or removed. you be ready to install shaft cleaned of rust and debured, welding or heavy leather gloves or mittens and your 230 degree coupling, sleeve, bearing etc. or if removing, your hammer and or punch or what you need to turn or impact your puller and then work smoothly but quickly before the shaft gets expanded from the heat also. If it does you have lost your clearance. Let it air cool and it will not change its temper . If you have an air hose and let it blow on it to cool it, is almost as fast as water and will not change the temperr, but let the shaft or whatever return to its temper and start over. If you don't believe temper can change metal drastically then take a old file you don't' need and heat it orange or yellow would be better and if you have some garden lime bury it in a bucket of lime and leave it to cool overnight . you can bend it like mild steel .Sorry his was so long but thought it might help some of you.

      fnaguitarplayer9 video's are great and i also find your comment interesting, i for one have a habit of grabbing a torch and give it the beans and in the back of my mind that little voice is telling me not to change the temper, but needed a little advice, thanks to the both of you

    Wow that is crazy I never seen a crank bust by the fly wheel like that. Now I know to watch out for that. :)

    Yes, OUCH! Hate that about the crank. I try and get a pry on both sides if any way possible and I know you do too but you ran out of arms and hands. I've got a pickle fork I use on one side and a lady slipper on the other and then pop it. Usually works right off. And the way some companies say to run these engines is a wonder they stay together 5 seconds. Craftsman said to run the opposed piston wide open and just use the choke till it warmed up. That's why I got the jetted carb for it so I can crank it on idle.Gravely said to run the 301's wide open while working. A 301 never needed to be wound up as far as I can see. The blasted thing would kill a weeks burying. Probably the main reason the new ones are flying all to pieces. Too fast, too thin oil which leads to too hot internals and sparkling oil. But you got good parts left.

      Yepp haha I try to do it that way but they usually pop right off most of the time. not this one haha your right, and the auto chokes ones where the engine revs up full throttle when cold is not good, I put a manual choke on them! I ordered another used block off ebay and have some other parts coming in soon, hope to rebuild (or build) it here soon. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Are you still here on YT? I have a question about this same motor, but for the life of me can't find a good answer. Mine won't turn over until I take the spark plug out, then it spins freely (and squirts gas all over my driveway!) I watched a few tutorials, bought feeler gages, and adjusted the valves... but for the life of me it still won't exhaust and the pressure locks it up when I put the spark plug back in. Any advice?

      fnaguitarplayer9 yea you could maybe do a new project. Build a bike from stock new or used. Would be entertaining and educational. 👍

      Sounds like a good idea. I will put it on my project list, I've got several projects going right now, but I will plan on building one at some point, thanks for the ideas.

      Yeah, thats what most of them call it. You can buy a heavy duty billet version thats used in lawn mower racing. Thanks for Watching!!!

    I never seen the 14.5 horse have internal problems before
    I have two of them they run good as hell I have one on a Murray riding mower that motor likes 93 octane
    It runs like crap on regular gas

      IT won't be as long as it has been. If its raining to much this weekend i'll work on it instead. It will be 2 videos first video being the assembly of it and the 2nd will be the first starting of it.

      Surprising, it would have thrown a rod at some point, but i'd say it had a few more hours left. Its hard to kill them old briggs! Thanks for Watching!!!

    I normally used a flywheel puller so are you gonna replace that part what you just broke

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  7 лет назад

      I used to mine broke and i just now remembered to get another one. But yeah i did have to get another crankshaft for it, the ones I had from other engines were worn out to much to use. I had already ordered the block then found out i didn't have a good crank for it. Thanks for Watching!!!

      Either way, showing and discussing catastrophic internal failure, and/or rebuilding from it all makes for good content.

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  7 лет назад

      Yeah that true, and if i wasn't making videos I wouldn't be putting this much money in it, its not a main motor just a back up and for experiments, etc.

    Hey I just watched your video on the pocket bike when you cleaned the carb is there any way I can get in touch with you about pocket bikes I just bought one today and I can't get it to run

      Yeah, same way you did here, ask away! I have several videos on those motors, go to my channel and on the search bar (not at the top) type in pocket bike and it should come up with several videos. Thanks for Watching!!!

      I got a pretty good deal on a good used block, and ordered new rings and a rod for it, I'll fix it, and won't have a fortune invested in it. Thanks for Watching!!!

      @freddiejohnson1013 7 лет назад

      +fnaguitarplayer9 I guess you gonna prove all of us wrong by rebuilding that small engine's, I already know you are good at this, because you gave me the right valves clearance for Tecumseh lawnmower, only how long it gonna takes to rebuilds that engine's since you already have all the parts

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  7 лет назад

      I hear ya. In my latest video on surfacing heads and blocks i showed the block i'll be using in it. It won't take but a hour or 2 to put it together but i'm currently working on a truck on weekends and its taking alot of my time for these longer videos, it won't be long though!

  • @snowking55
    @snowking55 7 лет назад +1

    Man you actually replaced all those parts? Unless you had a donor engine or used parts, that would cost more than a new engine to buy all those parts new.

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  7 лет назад

      I got a good deal on a used block off ebay, and some other parts, I don't have a whole lot in it. If i wasn't making videos I probably wouldn't have put any more money into it, its just a back up motor anyway. But no, the only parts i bought new was a rod, rings, and gaskets. Thanks for Watching!!!

    that crank could be repaired u could drill a hole and tap it to hold the flywheel down
