@@mynamedoesntmatter8652 Because he's not very well known for a celebrity despite being a lot more talented than the overwhelming majority of contemporary famous musicians.
Guy said he never liked this song. I think it’s one of his best. The lyric about the piece of glass that became a beautiful prism with a tiny rainbow when it broke touches my heart. True of people sometimes. Some who shine beautiful light are broken in some fashion but if you look close you might see a rainbow.
Why does this song have such an impact on me?...Maybe bcauz at 75 I know that the value of things and people cant truly be measured in dollars and cents❤❤❤🙏.....
Love his soulful, haunting voice. Definitely one of the very best contemporary" country singers". Although I don't think that I would ever narrow down his talent to any one genre. He sings blues, pop and rockabilly. Such a kind and humble human being.❤❤❤
I come here now and then because...this song reminds me of a print I once owned. More than that, the gentle nature of the delivery and the kindness of Lyle Lovett, you just can't hide the nature of the man. The picture, a copy of an early Picasso print lost in a fire. Made when Picasso was more realistic in his work. We had it in a "cubby" hole on the way into our garage. It was in a special frame used to protect it. It was put there because there was something special about it. Every now and then you could stop to take a look and wonder about it. Convenience I guess. The fire was caused by a recalled car. That section of the house burned up and smoke got into the frame. Lost. Art and music. They go hand in hand.
Just surprised my old mans to see Lyle on tour in February. He's been a fan for decades and I have so many memories of being on a hot leather car seat listening to Lyle and others as a kid. Gonna be some serious tears that night.
Beautiful poetry that Lyle brings to life. I wish Guy thought it was worth recording because it is one of the best retrospective songs I have ever heard.
Saw Lyle last night in VA Beach VA. It was so good that people were levitating lol. Seriously, catch this tour. Probably the best concert I've ever seen. This guy can sing.
I always try to see Lyle at least every couple of years. I've seen him 6 times now. The last show at the "Wolf Trap" in Virginia this year was special because Mavis Staples opened for him and he had the "Large Band". He's always great. I've seen him with John Hiatt 3 times and they are fabulous in a small venue. Great stories are always told between songs. And Lyle is a true gentleman to everyone.
I have only seen him once. 1992 in Milwaukee on a double bill with Bonnie Raitt. It was a great concert and the two meshed so well in the last part when they performed together. His Large Band was on stage the entire night playing with both.
I met a stranger at the grocery store and he wound up seeing me right after at the gas station next to the store. He gave me a CD that he had made with this song on it. He told me to listen to it, I did & fell in love with this song. So very beautiful & the lyrics are so humbling.
@@quinbagwell7515 -actually I did bump into him at the same grocery store twice, but he always thought I was someone else that I resembled. I never saw him again. Just knew his name was Thomas.
Had the great fortune to hear him play this during his visit to Texas Tech as part of the presidential lecture series. Truly moving to hear this song played live in an intimate venue. FWIW, Steve Earle claims this is Guy's 2nd song, because Guy had a bad memory! :)
All the sad, heart-breaking loves that didn't quite sustain, the beautiful moments and memories long past but not forgotten! Lyle's songs remind you to hope for just one more chance!
Wow, I am looking at all of the things I am selling because I moving to Mexico and don't want my kids' burdened with it. The things I am keeping is like this song. One is a cup from the dollar tree my twins gave me when they were three
Guy recorded this song, I have it on 1/4 inch tape from 1970. Along with 12 other songs that were never released. I have been trying to get them out for years. It's a lot of weight on my shoulders, everyone seems afraid to touch it. Including: Joe Henry, Verlon Thompson, Tamara Saviano and others not so well known.
Beautiful song -- brings back sooooooooooooooooooo many memories of a life I once had. On a par with Reflections of My Life by Scottish group Marmalade.
Really? I'll give you the first one. A beautiful song. On the latter, that sort of thing matters to you Tommy? I'm sure if you asked Lyle, he'd tell you differently. The trip, the journey is short. He cares not for that part of his life. I'd like to think that his life is filled with gratitude and joy, for what he has, where he's at right this moment.
Is 'step inside this house' an invitation of some sort of a man wanting to be understood? I'd like to hear interpretations or the story behind the song.....
Lyle recorded this song 25 years ago in 1998, it's the title track of a two-disc set of truly excellent covers of some of his favorite songs. It is an astonishingly good album.
Lyle’s voice, hits you right in the heart. I think he’s a great actor too, the bridge was just right.
I don't have enough thumbs to give to this song and Lyle's version of it.
Oh man, it's always the simple songs that speak to the heart. And Mr. Lovett really brings this one home. Ahh, snivel
So humble is Lyle... he constantly gives credit and praise to those that deserve it.
You obviously don't know who Guy Clark is. Guy was FAR from two dimensional.
@@hardtaill70 Yikes... you are correct... did not intend that to slight Guy, but only meant to compliment Lyle. Editing now.
Lyle Lovett is one of most underrated performers or all time. If this song doesn't touch you...... nothing will.
If I don't like him, you'll punch me?
You must be deaf
Lyle covering Guy Clark is a thing of beauty.
How exactly is Lyle Lovett ‘underrated?’

This song reminds me of my granddad. He lived in an old school in Orange, TX. I love him and miss him so much. Lyle does this song justice!
Lyle embodies a Texas gentleman to me, as I sit here listening in Canada. ❤

Gonna be some serious tears that night.
I hope you had a great time with your ol' man.
Quite the gift you gave him.
Austin City Limits always does the artist justice from an audio perspective. Beautiful mix. Great performance captured flawlessly.
Right!? I've always appreciated that about ACL, also Old Grey Whistle Test always did a great job.
My Life in a song.
An example of Lovett taking an unrecorded song that the writer, Guy Clark was critical of, and making it an extraordinary work of art.
WOnderful song. Always admired Lyle L.
Beautiful poetry that Lyle brings to life. I wish Guy thought it was worth recording because it is one of the best retrospective songs I have ever heard.
I hear ya Scotto Del Dato.. (from Stevo)
I could not agree more - I don’t know why he was so vexed that Lyle and the world loved this song so much. This is simply beautiful rendition.

Beautiful song, beautiful rendition...we are blessed...
Thank you Lyle. I gain something so special every time I hear you perform this song..
Mr. Lovett is one of the VERY BEST.
