I'm closing in on 80 and just recently heard this song. It hit me to the core. Brought tears to my eyes. Life is that way. The closer you get to the end the more you realize it is the memories that keep you going. I have a small box of momentos that I look at from time to time. They are from my military career, my youth, and other times in my life. I listen to this song at least once a day. As Jimmy Bufffet said about life "some of it's tragic, some of it's magic but it's been a good life all the way."
80 next August and love the sentiment of this song.I have a house full of art done by friends mostly gone now along with one of the finest artist lve known.Gone now going on five years
This song reaches out just like a real invitation: a sincere reaching out that clasps you in its hands and gives you an intimate tour. It has the soul of a seven year old finding a new friend.
Had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Lyle in Concert Hall, Glasgow, Scotland. for the first many many years ago, he appeared by himself and a celloist, he entertained the audience with great songs and musicianship and anecdotes.
Lyle Lovett, I knew you were a star the second I first heard you @ Mr. Gattis's in College Station. You never get old. Steve & I both think you are FABULOUS because you are! Juanita & Steve Baker, San Angelo, TX.
I see this guy often where i work. Born and raised where he was too, right down the street. Humble dude. Im young and he probably doesnt know i know who he is but i just treat him like anybody else. Real nice dude. Introduced himself and told me about his upbringings and even asked about mine. Great customer, great dude.
I met LL after a show many years ago, right after this album came out. There were a number of us who waited outside the back door of the theater to meet him. As we crowded around him to get autographs and a minute or two of conversation, he took as much time with each person as he or she wanted. When it came my turn, I couldn't help but feel that he treated me like I was the only person there. He didn't just sign and nod. He didn't just give me a canned response. He listened to me and conversed with me. I also always cut musicians slack when meeting them. They just got off work. They are tired, and I never take offense to what they say or how they act. Most are very nice. Some aloof. I'm just glad to be there. But I have yet to meet anyone who could make every person in line feel as though he truly appreciated the fact that they were there, as though he wanted to talk to them, like Lyle did. The man exudes coolness and grace and I will always consider my two minutes with him as a very special moment in my life.
Just saw Lyle with the Large Band with Mavis Staples @ the Wolf Trap in Virginia. I've seen Lyle 5 times now. What stands out above all with Lyle is he is a true gentleman. His pastor was there that night and he spent a time talking about him and his wife and how much they had done for him and their dedication to training chaplains for the military. Lyles one of the good guys and someone I would be proud to know. He also has one hell of a sense of humor and is a wicked good story teller.
Saw Lyle at the Wolftrap, Birchmere, in Norfolk, Carpenter Center in Richmond, in Bozeman, MT and a few other places. He never disappoints between his music, humour and stories. He’ll always be a favourite of mine...
A legend in his own time So glad him and another living legend John Hiat toured for awhile together. Simple quality thru and true and when they rock they do it well. Thank you Mr Lovett.
When I hear singer/songwriters like Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett, it's clear that some people are ordained at birth to be the writers of songs and the interpreters of songs. Masterful song and masterful performance.
Damn it !! This fricking song made me cry. Perhaps is due to the Covid 19 times we're all living in, but this song, and Lyle's voice, broke me to tears. And, of corse, some memories of my own life. Thank you, and have a beautiful life everybody. Peace.
They were specially talented people....long before their time .......Guy, Townes, Jerry Jeff, Blaze, Steve Earle, Rodney and Willie.....Texas music was the epitome of originality.
And that is the "short" list. Robert Earl, Jimmie Dale, Butch Hancock, Blaze, Joe Ely, Calvin Russell, Willis Allen Ramsey, Marcia Ball, Doug Sahm, Billy Joe Shaver, so many more. There is something in the Texas water that no other state can even come close to. I am so glad I left that shithole, NY to move to Austin in 1980.
When I stumbled upon the "Step Inside This House" album I didn't know about any of the TX writers and it completely changed everything I thought I knew about music. Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell and Steve Earle, they are all amazing! and there are many, many more of them out there!
Lyle Lovett is one of best preforming artists and song writers of any generation. If you have the opportunity go and see this man preform, he is well worth the price of admission.
Yeah wow I’ve always admired Lyle Lovett and I got to see him once a few years ago here in Cleveland with his large band is simply one of the best shows I ever saw. I’ve only had those kind of feelings in this song a few times in my life and by damn I wish I hadn’t lost them. I don’t believe we are meant to be alone on this planet and no matter how hard we try we screw it up we can screw it up huge For whatever reason we end up alone. I’d like to have these feelings again to ask some some girl to step inside again and share my life as hard as that may be thank you I love it for this moment. 💔💕 For many of us love is all we need damn it’s hard to get
he does small venue shows here in the Bay Area too, at a winery in the hills from here, I have seen him twice, no matter how many times he is a breath of good air.
Lyle Lovett has always been one of my favorite entertainers. I always felt he never got the credit he deserved. I would like to see him cut a new Cd soon.
Lyle Lovett is truly a master, and the world is so much better for having his art in it. I wish he was more celebrated as an artist. He deserves it. I'm not a country fan, but he transcends a genre. If you ever see this, Mr. Lovett, Thank you for blessing this world with your talent.
As a museum curator, I have always loved this song as a touching testimony to the emotional importance of objects in our life. Guy Clark totally nailed this! I have no idea what he can possibly criticize about it.
One doesn’t need thousands of “things” to appreciate being alive. Life in itself is a wonderful thing. Sung beautifully by Lyle written by the great Guy Clark.
we're all broken in one way or another. . .when those breaks have the right light they produce a rainbow. Guy Clark was a poet as great as any of the romantic period.
Really hard to say what irked Guy about this. There is one line that’s a little clumsy, doesn’t scan too well. Still, I’m stumped as to why he never recorded it and didn’t even want Lyle to keep performing it.
I'm 58, I've been playing guitar since I was 16. I've seen Lyle over the years but only during his country ups. I regret that I haven't discover him... his true musical side until just now. I've spent hours listening to this wonderful musician. I'm a new fan, maybe a bit too late.
Nicely put J Oliver, wife just died and as I and son went through all her memories and stuff and my god you hit it right, it is the small things that are the most meaningful
I have to thank a dear friend of mine, for bring up Lyle Lovett's name..The time was very creative indeed and a mix of talent bloomed. Still does, but not the same. Nothing is the same, lyrically incredible. feeling memories a guitar ..And just peace. I applaud Lyle Lovett and his music and how he created a passion in me of the gifted artist and musicians that I enjoy all these years later.
Such a pure meaning to inviting people in your life.... but what is amazing is being thanked for it .,, love this song,,and even better with the story behind it.
I have this CD. He was in Pennsylvania and did a meet and greet sponsored by WXPN at a Borders bookstore..And afterwords we waited in line until 1 AM and he signed part of the insert for me. And he was so tired. And I told him 'you are so tired -- please get some sleep. You would really feel good with more sleep." And he smiled and said 'thank you ma'am. That's the best suggestion I've had all night.' Nice memories of Lyle,
He made remember going back to Georgia to my grandmas. They didn’t have much but it was home to me. In that old house I could be anything, and love was the thing that made it feel like a castle.
Had the honor of seeing Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, Joe Ely and John Hiatt together in '05 in East Lansing MI during their Songwriters tour. Lyle sang this song with Guy Clark by his side. It was a beautiful thing indeed.
Me as well Steve, in my case, in a tiny theater in Princeton. I'm sure they would have done it had there been no-one else there at all. They had each other, and because of that the night was perfect.
Saw the 4 of them around 2006-07. I was fully expecting Lyle to be the headliner but was pleasantly surprised as he humbly and graciously shared the time, each performer taking turns singing a song. No egos at all on that stage, just a ton of talent!
Gracious, humble, generous with credit, praise & admiration of others...smooth, accomplished artist...Wonderful job Mr. Lyle Lovett. I have to think Mr. Guy Clark would smile at this rendition. Thank you for sharing your talent & gifts with us. May God bless you & yours. Be well.
Remember, this was Guy's first song. First. Song. He just got better from there on. And BTW this says everything you need to know about the protagonist's life. I love this song and pretty much anything that Guy wrote. A classic storyteller.
What a wonderful version of a FANTASTIC song. I bought the Old Number One record , Guy's first recording the day it came out. I remember like it was yesterday growing up in Houston and riding my Norton to Evolution Tapes and Records in Pasadena. I sure love these songwriters like Lyle and Guy. And God Bless Townes.
***** Hey Greasegun! How are you. I had several BSA and Triumphs also. I have been riding for 44 years now. The Norton was an 850 Commando. I have two Hrleys presently but I am not riding much anymore. I need to sell mine and get a trike…lol.
Pipe Papi Yeah...shame. My back is too busted to ride anymore. Just the same, any of them Trumps still around? I had my one 650 worked over with pop up pistons and dual carbs and it ran like a banshee, except...at 140 Lbs. the kick starter kicked me back; launched me once. I used to get curious bystander to push start it. I only last week parted with my last...a Honda Shadow. Heavy bike! I'm done with it now. Besides, my car is faster. (Yes, it is!) Peace...
Guy Clark is my favorite song writer, I'm 46, I've been writing songs since I was 16 , I wish I had one to complain about like this, this song, like Guy himself, is a masterpiece!
Sadly, when I was in Nashville at the Country Music Hall of Fame, there was nary a reference to Lyle. Sad. Even Bob Dylan had a huge spread with Nashville Cats. But Lyle - nada. Disgrace.
It really is amazing how many singers fly under the radar, as he did with me. I had heard of him for MANY years during my fifty four years of life and caught him and Robert Earl Keen opening for George Strait at the T-Moblie Arena in Las Vegas last 7 and 8 of December it was a REAL eye opener for me. His unassuming, humble, polite and kind demeanor is what I hope to aspire to. I have a LONG way to go to catch him.
That picture hangin' on the wall Was painted by a friend He gave it to me all down and out When he owed me ten Now it doesn't look like much I guess But it's all that's left of him And it sure is nice from right over here When the light's a little dim Step inside my house Babe I'll sing for you a song I'll tell you 'bout where I've been It shouldn't take too long I'll show you all the things I own My treasures you might say Couldn't be more'n ten dollars worth But they brighten up my day Here's a book of poems I got From a girl I used to know I guess I read it front to back Fifty times or so It's all about the good life And stayin' at ease with the world It's funny how I love that book And I never loved that girl Hold this piece of glass Up to the light comin' through the door It's a prism glass I found on the road Can you see that little rainbow Well it's not really a prism I guess It just broke in a funny way I found it on my way from Texas Headed for L.A. This guitar was given me By old man Thomas Gray It's not too much to look at But I pick it every day It's been across the country Four or five times I guess Between me and old man Tom It never got much rest Well that's about all I own And all I care to I guess Except this pair of boots And that funny yellow vest And that leather jacket and leather bag And hat hangin' on the wall Just so it's not too much to carry Could I see you again next Fall
He seems to be a nice guy...a gentle spirit ...I just found out of him watching a documentary about John Denver where he is a witness of John 's life. God bless
I saw Lyle open up for sting believe it or not in 1998 I think it was he blew me away I want there to see sting I came away huge Lyle fan. and I danced all night with Maureen
He opened for Rickie Lee Jones in Atlanta around 1989 or 1990 and just blew me away. I bought all his CDs the next day, I think he only had two or three out at the time, but I've been hooked ever since.
This song reminds me of a man named Otis. He was an old man when I was just a boy. He lived in a two room shack next to the Discovery Bay Tavern. There were six or eight of them. This was the early 1980’s. I’m still here but those cabins have been long swallowed up by blackberry bushes.
Mr. Lovett sings to my soul. I love to listen to him sing and speak, seems like a fellow I’d like to know, sensitive and kind. I’d like to be like that. Texas

ich schäme mich, diesen Artisten nicht gekannt zu haben. Möge diese Stimme die Welt erreichen.
I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Lyle, after seeing him multiple times, a real genuine gentleman, and a musical legend!
A not well enough appreciated musical genius. Lyle Lovett an artist.

This song hit my core!!!! Still feeling the goosebumps. Thank you 🙏
Never tire of Lyle's interpretation of this wonderful song.❤❤❤❤
I am from Monahans and to me Guy was wrong about this song. To me it is his best song in terms of emotion and kindness.
As a fan of Guy, and Lyle... what is there to criticize? It's a great song. I love it.
When I hear singer/songwriters like Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett, it's clear that some people are ordained at birth to be the writers of songs and the interpreters of songs. Masterful song and masterful performance.
John Prine and Guy Clark on a Porch singing in Heaven.

One of those seemingly simple songs that contain so much, and Lyle packs his version with such emotion. Love it.

The emotions captured in just this one song everyone can relate to. You can't find two songs in your lifetime that can do that.
I can name a handful of Guy's songs that bring me to tears.
That song is pure talent -- both the writing and the performing.
This was such a special moment at a really wonderful CT Forum. Hearing Lyle sing live and up close is powerful and touching.

This is a profoundly intelligent, gentlemanly singer-songwriter with so much fine wisdom and humor.
Thank you for the story and the song, as a Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett fan this is high cotton and greasy enchiladas.
Beautiful way of describing the small things in life, of which no one else can place a value, neither can they be bought or sold.

two brilliant musicians....Lyle and Guy. WOW
Lyle's a treasure, and this is one of my favorites he does. Seen him several times and never seen him do it live.
Lovett did this song last night in Chapel Hill. I love Guy Clark, but had never heard this song. Wow, it was the highlight of the show for me.

I have loved this song for years. I love Guy Clark songs, I also Lyle Lovett and how he sings his songs. I use it as a touchstone when I’m blue.

This man's music and voice makes me happy. His stories are from the heart. Intimate.
He made remember going back to Georgia to my grandmas. They didn’t have much but it was home to me. In that old house I could be anything, and love was the thing that made it feel like a castle.

But it's all that's left of him
And it sure is nice from right over here
When the light's a little dim
Step inside my house Babe
I'll sing for you a song
I'll tell you 'bout where I've been
It shouldn't take too long
I'll show you all the things I own
My treasures you might say
Couldn't be more'n ten dollars worth
But they brighten up my day
Here's a book of poems I got
From a girl I used to know
I guess I read it front to back
Fifty times or so
It's all about the good life
And stayin' at ease with the world
It's funny how I love that book
And I never loved that girl
Hold this piece of glass
Up to the light comin' through the door
It's a prism glass I found on the road
Can you see that little rainbow
Well it's not really a prism I guess
It just broke in a funny way
I found it on my way from Texas
Headed for L.A.
This guitar was given me
By old man Thomas Gray
It's not too much to look at
But I pick it every day
It's been across the country
Four or five times I guess
Between me and old man Tom
It never got much rest
Well that's about all I own
And all I care to I guess
Except this pair of boots
And that funny yellow vest
And that leather jacket and leather bag
And hat hangin' on the wall
Just so it's not too much to carry
Could I see you again next Fall
He seems to be a nice guy...a gentle spirit ...I just found out of him watching a documentary about John Denver where he is a witness of John 's life. God bless
Beautiful song...I hope he's now proud of his creation!
no words for this, so nice!!
Lovett's style makes this a beautiful ballad.
I just love his spirit and that voice.
I wish I could give this 10 thumbs up 👍
Great song. Well sung Lyle.
Mr. Lovett sings to my soul. I love to listen to him sing and speak, seems like a fellow I’d like to know, sensitive and kind. I’d like to be like that. Texas
Lyle paints such a wonderful picture when he sings. Like Dan Fogelberg among others that sing a short story for us.
god please play this on my radio tomorrow, this kicks all ass
Lyle Lovett is proof that Texas should be preserved, in spite of it all, just in case he wants to come back. And sing another song.
A true musical treasure for all who can find it in their hearts to walk in the path of the stories of everyday people. Thanks to Guy & Lyle !
