  • Chris McKee is back to showcase one of our favorite new guitars from Taylor, the 652ce. This Builder's Edition 12-Fret 12-String packs some incredible aesthetic appointments, from its Wild Honey Burst, soft satin finish, spruce/flamed maple combination, armrest bevel, chamfered binding, and compound carve cutaway-- all of the luxury we've come to expect from Andy Powers' Builders Edition guitars. It also brings some very welcome improvements to the common pitfalls of the 12-String; the V-Class bracing helps with the intonation and sustain, the shorter scale length and lower bridge placement helps with warmer tonality, and the bass-first string order helps you pack a punch with your down strums. Add a set of beautiful Gotoh 510 Tuners, and you've got a whole list of reasons why the 562ce is our favorite Taylor 12-String yet.

    I just looked at this review again, and saw that my original comment was 2 years ago.
    I’m still in love with this guitar. I have a 150E also, which I have in an alternate tuning.
    My mom always said, “buy once, cry once.” This one is very special to me.
    Expensive yes, but for me, it was well worth it.
    A very, very nice sounding 12 string, and beautiful to boot!

    Update: The 652ce looks awesome sitting beside the 614ce. Great tone. Returned it due to a factory finish defect. Looks like a buffing wheel burned the finish where the upper neck heel joins the body just under the fretboard. I may or may not reorder. If I do, it'll be from a supplier that will inspect it before shipping.
    Just ordered mine today! I've been reviewing the 652ce Builders Edition ever since I bought the 614ce Builders Edition WHB about a year ago. I'll likely never have to buy another guitar.

    Hi Chris...I ordered 652 from my local dealer here in Pittsburgh, PA just as the COVID-19 mess hit in March. Finally received it in the beginning of June. It was worth the wait. Having another 12 string from the big M in PA, this one blows it away and your review was spot on. Thanks!!

    I bought one of these about a month ago.
    I can't stop telling my friends about this. I've never experienced such a beautiful sound from a guitar before, and I own a 150e, and a 614ce, both from Taylor.
    It's actually easier for me to play than my 614ce six string.
    It's hard to put into words how it sounds. The intonation is perfect, right up the fretboard.
    Pricey, yes. Maybe not for someone who has a mortgage, a car payment, and a family to support, unless you have the cash on hand.

    @alansturgess1324 3 года назад +4

    So if one string breaks, you have to release both so as to replace the broken string? Mmmmm - not convinced.
    As for tuning 12s - I've never understood the issue, especially with more recent 12s, and I've owned and plays 12s since the very early 60s. It depends if you try to tune each pair at the same time. In comments for other 12 string vids I've explained the system I use. Unless you have a 12 which is inherently poorly intonated, tuning is NOT a serious issue.
    I own a 562ce and a Paul Brett 880PB. Tuning for both is almost insanely stable.

    • @BradMaestas
      @BradMaestas 2 года назад

      I have to agree here. Aside from the obvious, the setup and the maintenance of the instrument also plays a big part when it comes to the intonation. I've played plenty of 6 strings that don't intonate well. There's also a lot of room for improvement when it comes to tuning technique. Playing mandolin really whipped me into shape. I have a Taylor 855 from 1995 that plays like a dream and is in tune everywhere. But I've also maintained it and keep it in tune.

    Hey Chris,
    I always have been a great fan of Taylor acoustic guitars, however never had one.
    Now, I am just starting to learn first and after that, I am going to buy a Taylor Jumbo 12 string.
    I have been looking online, trying to understand Jumbo models, and specs of each model. For example I don't know the difference between 855, 655, 455 or 355 etc.
    Basically, my personal taste would be a Taylor 12 jumbo full body (non cutaway) all solid, but not new...probably something from 2006 back.
    I would like to know which models were available, which types of wood were used back there, inlays available, specs wise and etc.
    Can you suggest any link, or provide reading material to learn all the differences between the models?
    Or even if you can tell me the whole story.
    Thank you!

    "That big body was there to counter act that jangly sound of a 12 string".... NO IT'S NOT; it was to enhance bass response and to INCREASE VOLUME. EVERY dealer knows these smaller body guitars have lesser volume output. When I considered trading my 458 for smaller body Taylor 12, my dealer was honest enough to say to me: "You won't like it; it'll be quieter than your bigger body 12". Word to the wise.

  • @rtmca1

    Does this mean that the Large 14 fret X braced Taylor’s are worse guitars? Why are they selling now on Reverb for more than retail? It’s because those “obsolete” Taylor’s have power and they also stay in tune as well. Bob Taylor’s design for 12 strings revolutionized the standing of 12 strings. Ask Leo Koetke. Are the Andy Powers 12 strings better? If you listen closely to the video you’ll notice they lack something…Power and Presence. They sound…delicate. They are easier to play, though.

      Thank you for the comment. I got the Taylor the day before yesterday but it sounds awful, like it's for small children, nothing voluminous in the sound and much too mid-range, too small a body, even the treble doesn't help, the sound is much too unbalanced. Shrill, yes. I'll send them back and have the Guild F-512 sent to me. It sounds much more voluminous. Even my Ibanez, which I bought 20 years ago for 700 Euros, sounds better to me than the Taylor for 4,190 Euros. Thank you for the tip!

    I had the Taylor 652 CE Builder's edition sent to me. But it sounds terrible. To me. It sounds like it came out of a shoe box, hardly any bass, too many mids and the treble is overabundant. Terrible! In Germany for 4,190 euros.The low strings the octave strings are also on the other side like normal I don't know why and the fingerboard is too narrow for me. Both lead to an extremely bad playing feeling for me. Others may find them good, I don't. I'm sending them back and ordering the Guild USA F-512 E. It sounds much more voluminous to me than the Taylor guitar in. I played my old Ibanez 12-string for 45 minutes today and it cost me 700 euros at the time. About 20 years ago. I played myself into a frenzy with that one alone, and then I switched to the Taylor and it was pretty boring. I'm very curious about the Guild! Greetings from Germany.
