- A big jumbo body and 12 strings is a recipe for acoustic guitar magic. Taylor has bought back these wonderful models as new V-class braced big bodies 12 string guitars. The 858e boasts typical 800 series adornment and sings with volume and rich bass as a perfect counterpoint to the 12 string jangle. The all-koa K68e compliments those additional octaves with wonderful warmth and controlled compression to really let your playing shine.

Taylor continues to amaze with wonderful guitars. Those sound so impressive.
If I had to pick one, it would be the 858e LTD. But that's how I play. I still love the unsigned Chris McKee signature Taylor 914ce model. Thank you, folks.
Outstanding video, some of the best audio I've heard from this channel too!
I like the deep 5” body of Taylor jumbo 12 strings that helps boost the bass. I always feel lack of bass on 12 string guitars, especially on the maple 12 strings. However, I could hear louder bass and higher volume for low frequency tones on these Taylors. The armrest is an excellent appointment and it would help with playability and comfort given the large and deep body of the jumbo guitar; playing 12 strings takes more energy than playing 6 strings.
I'm glad to see you demonstrating 12 string guitars. I would love to hear you compare the Tayor 858E with a Guild F-512.
Yes, I absolutely love to see a comparison between Taylor 858e and Guild F512. I have Guild F512 maple and am debating whether to get Taylor 858e or Guild F512 rosewood for my next 12 string if my wife will ever let me haha
Wow I could really hear the difference in these two guitars even on my phone speakers. Great demo gentlemen. Beautiful guitars and it would be hard to choose. I think the Koa has just a bit of an edge over the spruce/ rosewood for me. 👏👍
Great timing for this video. I just bought an 858 LTD yesterday. The Asia Pacific region is only getting 10 of them(I'm in Australia). I am very pleased with it.
I would be dishonest if I didnt say im a little be jealous, congrads and happy playing, Jim from Traverse City Michigan U.S.A.
How is Taylor 858ce compared to other similar 12 strings like Guild F512 or Martin J40-12 or Gibson SJ200-12?
@@hughnguyen1772 I don't know. I never tried those guitars. It plays great though.
I'm a Martin AND a Gibson guy (some people find that strange enough by itself), but if I would shop for a 12 string (and believe me, one day I will!!!), I would most definitely go for a Taylor. And not JUST because of the fact that Taylor makes them playable, they just sound sweet and beautiful. And these two look beautiful as well. So, what's not to love? 😎
I'm the same. Bought my dream Martin HD-28 last year and was thinking about splurging on the HD-28 12 string but was just a bit too expensive. Got a Taylor 352ce, which has the smaller body attached at the 12th fret rather than 14. About $2k, right at the premium midrange point, which is rare for 12 strings. Seems it's either cheapo 12ers or super jumbo/expensive 12ers for like $4k.
Martin and Gibson are fantastic guitars and so are Guild, Taylor, etc. Perhaps, it's time to open your horizon a little and try another brand next time you buy a guitar.
@@hughnguyen1772 : o believe me, I tried plenty. And I absolutely do not dislike other brands, I just prefer Martins and Gibsons mostly. And for various reasons by the way.
I have a couple of cheap guitars and the quality of those are amazing. I bought a beautiful Eastman, because I wanted to have something in D or C# standard. Amazing guitar! And I own two cheap Guilds. An 8 string baritone and a 12 string. Both exceptionally good for the price. They play like butter.
But like Evan said (I assume his name is Evan), it’s hard to find a 12 string or an 8 string baritone for a reasonable price. Especially considering the fact that you play them less often than regular guitars. I didn’t want to spend around 2k for a guitar that I might not use that much, so I went for the cheap Guild range. And again, they’re amazing for the money. Actually, they’re pretty good anyway!
But don’t worry about me for not broadening my horizons. In 43 years of playing guitar and even working in a vintage guitar store, I’ve tried and played so many different guitars and I’m still learning every day. Martins and Gibsons are still my go to guitars, when it comes to acoustics. Although I exclude the guitars that are even more expensive. I know they’re good, but I must draw a line somewhere. And that line doesn’t just keep me from buying guitars from some high end brands, but it keeps me from buying an SJ-200, or a Martin D-40+ as well.
Wow! So glad I happened upon this video! I have an early 855 jumbo…and the comparison to the 858e is amazing! I’m hoping to add another 12 to my collection in the coming year. This gave me good things to consider.keep doing what you do!
Since you already have Taylor, I would recommend Guild F512. I play Guild F512 and will definitely get the Taylor 858e for my next 12-string.😊
Great meeting you today Cooper! I agree completely with the K68E, it is a joy to play. It’s significantly warmer, an absolutely gorgeous guitar. I’ve followed your videos for a good while now, it was fun to see Alamo Music in person. Thank you for being so welcoming.
Thank you so much for coming by, it was great to meet y’all too. If you’re ever back in the area on another cross country road trip, come back and jam out. Drive safe!
I bought the Koa 12 string from Cooper. First class service and delivery. I’m really enjoying the guitar! Thanks!
They sound great. Cooper sold me on the 9-string a week or 2 ago.I would like one of those Alamo hats in Green, like Cooper Greenberg wore a few videos ago. Thanks, Cooper and Chris.
Hey guys,
I don’t own any Taylor’s personally however I tried out a 12 string Taylor over at my buddy’s house when someone brought one over there. The playability was pretty amazing, the string action was extremely low yet I had absolutely no buzzing, even when I laid into it. I own two Martin 6 strings and I love them both, I also own an Epiphone 12 string which plays nicely however it’s nowhere near the craftsmanship of these guitars you guys are showing here. If I ever go for another 12 string it would ideally be a Taylor just for the really nice feel and playability. Thanks for all of your videos guys, been following you all for a while now and Cooper’s playing is so damn good too, always a pleasure listening to him play 🤙
I always look for the pooka-pow at the end of the demo. Super rad!
The K68 (IMO) is the better one of the two. First off, great recording, great playing of the demo. Loved I could hear the same song back to back. That said, the Rosewood 858 was...muddy I think. No real separation of the notes. Now, maybe this is what you desire, but I just hear the strum as a whole and how they intermingle with each other, with harmonics overlapping and getting in each other's way. The K68 has significantly better separation, allowing me to hear the individual notes much clearer. Yes, the whole strum is heard too, but it does a better job of suppressing a lot of the harmonics that are "getting in the way" in the 858s tone. The Koa reminds me of a Maple bodied guitar in that way, but the Koa has more darkness to the sound. Personally, I prefer a maple 12 string jumbo. The brightness of the maple and the 12 strings, plus the big body that pumps out a lot of bass combine to a almost a perfect resolution in the middle. That said, the sustain on both of these Taylors is are just incredible. Very nice job. I hope they come out in a non-limited edition.
Amazing sounds! :-) What's the song that's played at 13:15 ? Love it.
Great video gents. Think I need a K68 Cooper. 😅
Would not be a bad pair with the K24ce Builder's...
I’ve loved the sound of a 12 string guitar since I bought my first one in 1967. That was a Yamaha which I used until I bought my first Taylor in 1995 which was a Leo Kottke 12 string. Finances forced me to sell that one in 2006. I just sold my 1996 450 12 string, finances again. I love the 868. It reminds me of a piano sound, but I’ll take either one of them. Thanks for the great demo guys!
Taylor and Guild USA are the 2 best sounding 12 strings !
Both are beautiful guitars. Given the limitaitons of RUclips Audio, I have to vote for the 858 - it just sounded fuller and slightly warmer than the K68. IMO.
Does Alamo do setups on these guitars befor making videos
I have a 562 12 string and wondering if 858 has more bass or deeper end.. my 562 plays as easily as a 6 ..dif sound than a 6 but hey thats why I brought it..have 3 Taylors..by watching the whole vid..you some what ans. my question
What is the K68e pickup ?
So can they get 2 sets of book matched backs , tops, sides out of a slab of wood, 2 extremely close guitars out in the world maybe, thick slabs that work once in a blue moon, or isnt it possible ?
Hi They sound very good and I like them but there is a question - How long they would last as really playable good ones as both of them have a lot of stress and tension on the fretboard as well as on the body. Particularly here in Maldives where the humidity ranges everyday 85%, I am putting on 24 hrs A/C for my present all solid guitars just to maintain its humidity 50 to 60% so that its wood conditions remains intact.
A more economical idea might be cases with silica packets to reduce moisture... and the tension in the neck and body rather minimal with modern extra-light strings, especially if you tune down and capo-up
Humidity is good for accoustic guitars. The wood can crack if it's too dry.
What strings are being used?
I listened through the K68; real nice. The 858 I disliked right away. Rosewood B/S on a jumbo spruce top is just too bright. Years back, I had a custom Taylor 815 (6-string) made to my specs. The massive rosewood body over-drove the spruce top so bad when playing a flatpick, it literally made a bang sound. I decided to trade it in and order the same model with cocobolo B/S and a cedar top; problem solved and the best (and most $$$) guitar I own. Less of an issue with 12 string, which aren’t played as hard, so…
Watching your videos... my Taylor 200 series is just too big body wises but also fretting across 4 frets is impossible for me. I bought and returned a little Martin which was too small. What do you have in between? I want more than 12" from top of fretboard to body. I hear gibbons fret system is different than others and frets closer together but would like to spend under $700, preferably less.
Great questions. You want to look for a guitar with a shorter scale length. That’s the measurement from the nut on the guitar near the headstock to the saddle. A shorter scale length will push the frets closer together. Perhaps a Taylor GSMini would be best. A little longer scale than the Little Martin but with a bigger body that is closer to a full-size guitar than the little Martin. - Chris
@@AlamoMusic thanks, i had JUST seen your video on that, scanning your site now...
@@AlamoMusic SMALLER BODY though, right? This 200 dwarfs me and i'm short/small
@@AlamoMusic and the scale size is the same as the little martin so its just got a bigger body? what about 7/8?
How can we order one from you now? Prices on both? Thank you…
Hi there! You can email us at yourfriends@alamomusic.com for more info on these guitars. Thank you!
Taylor twelve string guitars an easy definition of playable twelve string guitars !!!
J 16 E 12 string
You forgot about Leo Kottke played 12 string
Neil Young is a Martin guitar man, but when he had to pick a 12-string, he picked a Taylor. Hard to think that he may have been wrong in his choice.
I enjoy the Koa it's not as jangly.
These guitars have a larger lower bout than my wife, and almost as beautiful
That A Guild F512 copy haha
I owned the 858e for several years. Then I sold it and made the biggest mistake of my guitar playing life
@@hughnguyen1772 No, you're wrong. I bought the guitar new in 2017 . Take a closer look at the videos on you tube related to this guitar and you will also find older videos.
There is an after taste in the sound that i dont like.
i have a Taylor 300 series 12 string i wouldn't buy another taylor, they are more an electro acoustic than an acoustic guitar, good for that but i'm a more acoustic guitar player, i'll stick to my Martins.
This is why it’s so great to have so many good and great guitar makers. You can find the guitar you like at a price you can afford or are willing to spend. Enjoy your Martins and have fun playing. 👍
I hope they keep these in the lineup. The old 458e really gave me GAS but then it was gone. I don’t like smaller 12 strings.
