      Hey Rick. One of the interesting things about my music career is that for the first 25 years I primarily to find myself first in for most as a songwriter. And had a pretty decent career albeit, minor-league. When I started the RUclips channel I had some number in my head I don't know what it is or what it was that I needed to get to you before I started featuring some of my original songs. And now we're three to have years of the rear and I believe I posted three total. I really don't know why when I think about it it's very strange. Mark

    Mark, Thanks again as we have corresponded I was ready to throw my 150e out the window or use it for kindling. After giving it now 6 months it is becoming my go to as well. Where it really shines is in a room with great acoustics. I played today in a small venue as part of a trio and doing the sound check playing solo the low tones hold beautifully. I am still not fully proficient on the 12 string but I am committed to keep practicing. Love the videos please keep them coming.

      Hey Dennis. I have a suggestion. Try arpeggiated simple chords, Cowboy cords, maybe something like house of the rising sun and tape yourself. The goal is to get to the point where none of the notes buzz. I think for most people it's more about learning mindfulness I'm paying attention than overcoming some physical impediment. Thanks so much for always supporting. I sincerely appreciate it. Take care and have a great week. Mark

    I'm fortunate enough in my work to be able to be able to help people, not always strangers but every once in a while, and make their day a little easier. It does feel good. Watching this video, or any of your videos, 3 times is no big ask, I pretty much do it regardless! So my comment for today is "Thanks for kicking in a little Pleasant Valley Sunday! Love that song and would love to see it played all the way through. Ironically, My street/driveway sit right off of "Pleasant Valley Road". It's far from the "keep up with the Joneses" the song describes but I cant but help hearing that opening riff in my head every time I turn down the street to head home! LOL

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  Год назад

      Pleasant valley has been a main stay in my acoustic duo set for many years. It's a fun one and a great song. I believe Mike used three six string guitars on the original recording but he used the 12 to play it live at just about every show. It's one of my favorite guitar riffs ever. Keeping up with the Joneses has never been on my mind but four years ago we moved into neighborhood specifically for the kids to be able to stretch their legs, meet new kids, and fully enjoy being kids. Unfortunately, there's a governing body that makes all kinds of crazy rules. The first year we were here I got about 12 letters telling me to do this or stop that and I keep a clean and reasonably well maintained yard. I have to believe that some of my neighbors must get these letters on a weekly basis. LOL.

      @@8MinuteAxe I hear ya. "Suburbia is in many ways great when you have kids, but definitely has some down sides, especially if you have lots of older folks in the neighborhood. LOL Nowadays with the kids grown and gone, and living in the country we would pretty much need to throw a rock concert to draw any attention from the neighbors, :)

    I really like this review of this guitar. I am more interested in buying this now than a Guild 12-string. I have a large body 6-string and was wanting a large body 12-string as well. Now I’m wondering if the Taylor wouldn’t be the better purchase for me since the large body is usually a little harder to play, even though I love the big sound it gets.

    Hello Mark. Please tell me what size of strings do you use? And what size do you propose to a beginner?

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  Год назад

      Hey Yorgos. For years I used Martins or D'Addarios on my 12 string acoustics because they were readily available and inexpensive. About a year ago I discovered Ernie Ball Silk and Steel Soft for the 12. That's all I use now. Whatever I lose in attack and brightness is far outweighed by how gentle they are on the fingers and how comfortable they are to play. If you're talking about a 6 string, I use very light gauge for my electrics. 8 usually on my 24.75 scale and 8.5 or 9s on my 25.5s. For acoustics, I recently switched from 10s all the way up to 12s because I've been playing more fingerstyle. I receommend 9s for electric for a beginner. 10s or 11s for acoustic. For the 12 string I don't think it matters as much. I believe the silk and steel are 10s so that's what I use. I hope that helps. If you're a beginner here's the best advice I can give you. Don't worry too much about strings, tone, gadgets, set ups, intonation, or anything else that's going to distract you or take away from your practice time. Practice and play. If you find yourself getting lost on the internet looking at guitars for two hours make a commitment to spend at least 25% of that time practicing next time. Talking about gear is fun but the cynic in me says that people that get into long debates over tone and are tone "specialists" are trying to find relevancy in the guitar world without having to practice. It's not always the case but I've seen a lot of guys talking a lot of s--t that can barely play. Let me know if you need help or have any additional questions. Always best to email me if you do. markaranalli@gmail.com. Please take care and be well. Mark

      I have two albums with my band that were released in 99 and 00 respectively (I wrote all but 3 songs on the combined) I also had a single in 2004 that is the closest I ever had to a hit (big on internet radio but didn't crack billboard or anything, minor league stuff). Since then, I've recorded about 100 songs. Over the past 5 years my productivity has slowed down or I should say, I no longer finish stuff that I don't think is high quality. I have about 25 new ones over the past couple of years. I would say three or four are what I would consider A listers. A few are diamonds in the rough. The other twenty all have something appealing about them but they fell short of my initial expectations. The biggest problem I have is sitting on a song too long. There's a small window for me to explore where a song goes and then it gets locked and it's hard to rewrite a part. As a matter of fact, the lead track off of the first record is a really good song with a crappy chorus. I've been wanting to rewrite it for 20 years and for the first time I was able to overcome and get it done.

      Here is a concert we played in 2000 that one of our former guitarists posted. I have about 50 shows on some form of media that are better than this one but it's not bad. It's an odd lineup. The bass player and I were the only two constants. The drummer here only played about 10 shows with us. This is the only lineup where I wasn't the lead guitarist. Keith, the guitarist, is an incredible talent. I wrote all of the songs. Most of these never made a record. Yes, that's me with the long blond hair and leather pants. ruclips.net/video/bnsAPEBe_gU/видео.html&ab_channel=KeithWilkinson

      @@8MinuteAxe Thanks Mark for the detailed explanation. I’m in a similar boat to you. I’ve recorded around 250 songs since 1985. Some worked out very well, others didn’t. I had 2 albums released on a small German label around 1999-2002. My output has slowed too over latter years but I intend to record a lot more in the near future. I agree about not spending too much time on one idea. The one thing I learnt is what you consider to be a “lesser” song is often viewed by listeners as a favourite and vice versa! I will check out the concert. Thanks for the link.

    I bought this Taylor 12 string cuz it was bogo GS mini koa for 299.
    I’m a finger picker, and I’m having an incredibly hard time playing this 12 string cleanly. My thumb has hard time picking the 2 strings, on the base strings, cuz it’s a downward motion, and the little string makes my thumb not get good contact with the bigger string….if that makes sense? lol. I have small hands too, I’m wondering if I should try even lighter gauge stings

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  Год назад

      Hey J. Great questions and great deal on the Taylors. I own the same two guitars (I bought the GS Mini Koa used with a lot of upgrades). When you say finger picker, do you mean you like to use your fingers to play in general or you're a finger style player in the Chet Aktins et al style? If you generally like to finger pick, I recommend using a "light" gauge but it's not going to make a huge difference. You just have to get used to striking the bass strings on more of an angle. Or try to flat pick with a very thin pick. You'd be surprised how quickly the 12-string comes alive with a thin (between .35 and .5) pick. If you play traditional finger style, my guess is that the 3rd string is the most problematic for you. I recommend reversing that string set only. That way all the strings fall into a natural position of octave string being the first string struck. Shoot me an email at markaranalli@gmail.com. Send me a close up video if you can. I'll do my best to help you. Thanks so much for checking out the video! Mark

      Hey brother. Sorry to hear about the asthma. The way they rate the severity of asthma is ass backwards in my opinion. My son had 4 asthma attacks over a 5 year period, each resulting in hospitalization. Because the frequency was one a year they consider his asthma mild. When you're a dad on the way to the emergency because your kid can't breathe it's not mild. They have great maintenance drugs now like Qvar. I read that there's an albuterol shortage. I hope you take your rescue inhaler everywhere. You never know and that stuff works wonders. I sincerely appreciate the support. I'm grateful for your time and comments. Taylor makes great guitars and they are so smooth to play. They make great 12 string acoustics. But best... that is likely true when it comes to playability... but for tone and chime... I prefer the higher end Guild 12 string guitars. My 1979 F212XL (Mahogany) is a handful, but the sound is unmatched and no top out with heavy play. Fills a room with crystal clear chime. Each to there own.

    • @8MinuteAxe

      Yes but for the past 3.5 years I've been studying Chet Aktins/Tommy Emmanuel fingerstyle and I just started incorporating it into my 12 string playing. The rick stringing is a bad idea for most players. It's hard enough to get an even strike with the octave on top (physically). The Rick worked well for Roger McGuinn because he used his picks in a fingerstyle manner. People say they hear a big difference. I'm not really sure about that. The Byrds 12 string sound was so heavily compressed I don't think most people could tell the difference. Getting back to my playing, I'm going to start reversing the third string since I play traditional fingerstyle, using my three fingers to upstroke the top three strings. I strongly encourage a very thin pick and as you become better and better at managing even string strikes work your way up to maybe a .6 for picking and .73 for strumming. You do lose some control with the extra thin picks but for most people their 12 string playing totally comes alive when they switch to a thin pick. I can't tell you how many people have written to me gushing about how amazing their 12 sounds all of a sudden. Sure, it's going to sound great once you're playing 10 to 12 strings instead of 4 or 5. :)

When the channel started gaining some momentum I said when I reach X viewers I'll start pushing out the originals (I believe I've only uploaded 3 or 4 complete songs and a few live teasers). X keeps getting moved for some reason. Stupid reason. I was telling my wife today that I may set up a live stream at the end of next month and do a 30 minute original set in real time. I think that would be fun. Dreadnought and Jumbo 12 strings all sound good, espeically if you're a strummer. I've been doing a lot more Tommy Emmanuel fingerstyle on the 6 over the past three years and I'm finally starting to incorporate it into my 12 playing. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Sadly, I have no first hand experience with one, as I’m just a beginner and not experienced enough for 12 string yet. I used a sound hole pickup to capture more attack. I also had 2 mics on the guitar. Many fingersyle players will use multiple pickups. Percussive players like Mike Dawes and Andy McKee use three or four. The Baggs Anthem is by far the most natural sounding acoustic pickup. It's the only one that I would consider using in the studio in lieu of a mic. Have a great weekend, and take care. Mark

I played the guilds(their laminate ones) , takamine, and the taylor 150ce. I was about to purchase a solid wood guild but then I played the 352ce and even though it was way out of my price range, I bought it because it had this beautiful shimmer sounds that no other 12 string had. Everyone in the room who heard me play it agreed that it sounded amazing.

      A better comparison to those guitars would be the Takamine GJ72. The Martin and Guild are both jumbos. And this is all for fun. We watch these videos and make comparisons but there's no way to get a feel for the sound of any acoustic through a youtube video. The compression on any youtube upload is 12 to 1. Not to mention the mic, the processing, the rendering of the video which is usually 8 or 10 to 1. By the time the video is uploaded, any semblance of any guitar is long gone. That's why I don't record these with an NTK or a TM103. I use the x/y mics on my zoom recorder because it doesn't matter. You can play a custom Santa Cruz. There's no nuance. It's fun though. And we all kid ourselves that we hear stuff. Me included. Most of the time we're just watching reviews to validate ourselves. Nobody is ready to buy a JCM 800 and looks for a video "why the Marshall tone is overrated". I do appreciate your time though, very much. And if this proved you right, that's good too. Please take care, stay safe, and be well. Mark

      #1. Taylor sells about 700 North American built guitars a day… makes me think that quite a few people like the way they sound… yes / no?
      #2. Personally, I have no interest in all of my guitars sounding the same… this seems pretty boring for me,(and the audience). So, my current rotation is a RainSong Jumbo, a Martin D-18, and a Taylor GA 9 string,(octave strings on D & G, and paired B)… three different body sizes / shapes, and tunings. All are quite distinctive in tone, and I pick the one that best suits the song and the circumstances. All are great instruments that get lots of stage time, and I can play rock, blues, country and folk, play solo, or a a band, and have a good tone.
      If I just played bluegrass, I would only need the D-18… if I just played solo acoustic rock, I would only need the RainSong… if I only played Tom Petty, I would only need the Taylor 9 string. Is it possible your playing is stuck in a certain genre and style, BECAUSE of your search to have all of your guitars sound the same?
      BTW, the Taylor gets 90% of my living room play time, simply because it is musically more interesting than the others, and just more fun to play.
