Fascinatingly, this reveals that Videotape wasn't recorded to a click track, or at least, it was played with a fair number of hits played at the wrong time on the piano.
@@billyalarie929what he’s saying is, and i’m the exact same, is that he knows that the song is syncopated but everytime i listen to it, i can’t force my brain to hear it as syncopated no matter how hard i try. my brain always hears it as on the quarter note😭
Makes sense, because in the original version the kick matches the chords giving an absolute straight feeling. Syncopation might have been their original intention, but it's not how it came out. Nobody feels it syncopated unless they are told to do so (ultimately that's why this "reveal" video exists...nobody really feels it that way). Try and make anybody clap along the original track, you'll see what happens! (great mashup though)
@@iscreamforicecrem2322 yeah, makes it sound like a track that’s halfway between the album version and the earlier Bonnaroo version! I like it though 🤔🤷😂
Videotape is faster than it seems when you’re hearing it syncopated. The Idioteque track must’ve been sped up a little, it’s deffo slower than this on Kid A.
I know this is right, and I always try to hear the song that way when Radiohead plays it, but it’s nearly impossible. One of the only times I succeeded was watching a live version and counting off Colin’s body language.
Hey - it would really make my year to hear the syncopation for Thom’s “Last I Heard” song on ANIMA, I swear there’s a hidden time meter there my ear isn’t catching. Been driving me crazy cause the song is great, but I don’t wanna ruin it like I ruined videotape. Burned the piano strikes being in the one so deep in my neural pathways, I just cannot hear the album version alone syncopated. The drums of the album version make SO MUCH more sense now. I always felt they sounded awkward and boxy - not Radiohead style at all.
The beat goes round and round
just when you thought counting time signatures couldn't get any harder....
It's a feel, backbeating
When the Gates of Heaven is also a Night Club
Genius mix. Really highlights the syncopation.
thanks
Thom Yorke needs to hear this.
He does. That is how he could even play this.
This is so cursed
Edit: never mind, it gets really beautiful when you let it sink in
thanks, I think the last third works way better than the start.
blursed music
Videoteque
whoa
Everytime I listen to Videotape I always have to put this on after, it just gives it such a head bumping new version, I love it!
That's awesome to hear, glad you like it!
Fascinatingly, this reveals that Videotape wasn't recorded to a click track, or at least, it was played with a fair number of hits played at the wrong time on the piano.
I think it’s on purpose but I’m not sure. That’s just always been my impression when listening to videotape
That high hat ties in so nice wow
I still can't internalize it as syncopated lol.
It was syncopated the whole time tho.
The whole point of the song is exactly that.
@@billyalarie929I wouldn’t say it’s the whole point. More like an interesting note.

It's nice not to make the drums 'play' in my head as I usually do when listening to Videotape
Same.
Takes awhile to set in but when it does woah.
I still hear the piano as the downbeat, man
yupp.
The piano in the original wasn’t even downbeat tho.
In fact this becomes clear toward the last 3rd of the original track itself.
It's so good when I'm not being over analytical, but I'm a Radiohead fan so obviously I'm over analytical
Thanks for this. It was so hard to flip the beat after hearing for so long the other way.
Glad I could help!
Oh wow! This is actually a great mix! Sounds like something Radiohead would have released!
yooo we need a full version of videotape with this beat
This is amazing. I like how my favorite song merges with Idioteque.
faster johnny😡
Gotta lyk your comment made me laugh. It's funny to imagine Johnny's side of this.
So if you take a really great radiohead song, and mix it with another really great radiohead song, it becomes an amazing radiohead song?
who would've thunk it!
First minute is a headache but after that it starts to get better 😊
Came from Reddit. No regrets
Turns into THERE THERE … 🤟🤓
so impressive (i don't know what syncopation is)
I really do WISH the studio recording was much more like the 2006 Bonnaroo performance ...
I think the studio recording is more fitting but I wish there was an alternate version released
I'm wondering... Did you turn up the bpm of the videotape track, or do the idioteque drums just make it *feel* faster than it is?
Pretty sure I made a 4/4 loop from Idioteque then changed the bpm to match Videotape. Then some EQing to make them gel together.
I think it’s the latter, it’s weird though.

@@RustinCholeAgreed. Idioteque is normally slower than this.
Man this slaps
2 of my favs ❤

Cool. The ending is nice.
yeah, I think the latter half works the best.

That’s why I made this. I can’t hear it without a backbeat.
tysm
I don't know if I am euphoric or depressed
Manic Depression + Anxiety
I fvckin' love it
When the crack sound comes in….
Thank you
I prefer this over the original tbh
Like oil and water my friend, like oil and water...
Impressive
I mean you can just listen to the Bonnaroo version

I'm not a fan of the original but this sounds cool
OMG
And and and and ❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Why is it slightly sped up though
Is it?
somehow the syncopated beat is a lot groovier
but the original beats work best for the song
WTFFFFF
Trying to count this thing gave me a fucking seizure.
We demand more videos!
Fuck yeah, savage video
