I was in a bar in Florida and they had an empty piano sitting there. In walked a very large Russian guy speaking broken English and he asked the bartender if he could play the piano. He started playing popular show tunes and no one was really paying attention to him . He seen me looking at him and he said to me what would you like to hear and I said I'm sure you don't know the music that I like and he replied try me. I said Radiohead. He started with this song, Daydreaming, and played about 10 songs by Radiohead before he left. I asked the bartender who he was and he said I have no idea I've never seen him before. It was great almost like a ghost walked in played Radiohead and then disappeared. It was an interesting night that I enjoyed immensely.

Tommy Why So, sorry to tell you and I get you don't understand, but it is happening to you. Thom's character is dreaming back in time to our present tense; a Mal-adaptive Daydream (look it up). His "dream" begins in a man made cave surrounded by shadows of people but ends in a natural cave alone surrounded shadows of flames. He ends in the fetal position just like he did when I was a little boy in the video "Just". He is alone because the only food is other people, and if you recall from Kid A's "Idioteque", "the women and children would be first" and he'd "swallow until he burst". This dream is to see "everything in its right place", because everything has been swallowed by the sea. Ice Age coming.

Probably important to know that in 2015 he and his partner of 23 years split. She passed of cancer in 2016. The year this album was released. He was going through the deepest grief. She was gone. He and his children were left to mourn. It puts this album into focus.
Watch the video again. He is searching everywhere, through every door, in a hospital, ends back up in a home and there is a woman there reading a newspaper ...notice all the times he goes back into this house...looking for that which is lost. When he opens the last door he is in the snow, into a cave. And he has no discernible language to describe it. That’s grief.

This is actually what daydreaming feels like. You don't look at faces or the places you go, you don't pay any attention at all in the world around you. You open doors and pass lonely and crowded places and yet the only thing that travels through your head is your own thoughts. So the ending is like you finally find the place you were always searching to find or you weren't even searching, you just walked and the place found you.

I think this song is less about Thom's wife, and more deeply about the human journey from birth to death. In the beginning, Thom comes into this world with other souls. Just as life is an endless series of choices, Thom maneuvers through various settings, some symbolic depictions of family life, others symbolic depictions of possibility (hallways), advancements to more mature ways of thinking (stairs) and the recognizing the reality of samsara (laundromat). Then there are experiences of transcendence where Thom has momentary glimpses into eternity, into a reality beyond this life, into self-realization. He looks out of the parking garage at the light outside and wants to know it. Eventually he becomes more frantic trying to find himself, walking through more and more doors, but ending up in the same places, feeling as if he's losing sight of his path. Eventually he goes through the dark night of the soul, the only real path towards self-realization, and instead of searching for the sun outside, he searches for it within. He walks through ice and snow, turns inward (enters a small cave) and finds shelter within himself as he collapses and finds peace by the fire of his own soul. His search ends. What he wanted was within himself the whole time. This is death, but not of body. This is death of ego, this is true understanding of self.

She's slamming the door. Parts of the video seem to be mostly about parenthood - mainly about motherhood - if you remember anything about your childhood (or parenthood) (this is to say, in quite many cases, but not all, of course), it's typically one of the hardest bits: the child slamming the door on the parent to be alone while the parent just wanted the best for them and they don't understand it yet. A lot of the imagery during the song's video refers to motherhood as well as parenthood and "over achiever" struggles, or general struggles if you don't just consider a rat race for money fulfilling, even though we all do it. Throughout the video you actually see a combination of references to motherhood and to the albums that Radiohead have done - which I suppose is a culmination of Thom's struggle to make sense of where he should belong in this world.

I was in Japan, in Takayama, experiencing the most beautiful trip of my life with my best friend. One day, returning from an excursion, I decided to take a walk in Takayama along the river under the bridges. It was raining and the sky was gray, and then this music came on. And everything seemed…magical. Like a fairy tale, like a dream that one experiences with half-closed eyelids. My feet flew above the ground, the rain ran down my cheeks, my eyes observed the waves, the gray of the mountain and the beauty of this place. And slowly, a feeling of beauty, of nostalgia, of pain from this ephemeral moment crept into my heart. One of my most beautiful memories honestly.

My partner and I, we love you Thom.
We went to see you in December in LA this year, and it was Heaven.
She was diagnosed with cancer in the New Year.
I don't know if we'll ever get the chance to see you again, but if you ever see two empty seats at your show, please think of us.
She is my star. She is my heart. I am nothing without her.
I feel like you and Jack White brought us together, and we saw you both for the first time in the same year.
This life has been a dream. I am grateful. I am sorry.
May true love find us all.

This song uses three notes as its bed. The notes are D-E-A. On repeat it spells D-E-A-D. You hear it throughout most of the song.
This song is about Thom’s breakup with his woman. Btw.
Each door he passes through symbolizes a year of their lives together. Ive forgotten the number of doors.
Anyways in the end he crawls into the cold cave where the fire is. I can only picture that as being the state of their relationship. A cold wet cave with warmth in its heart.
Thom repeats the words “i love you fire”.
When played in reverse he actually says “half of my life”. The number of doors symbolized his years with her which summed up to half of his life in their relationship.
This is by far the deepest song i have ever encountered. Mind blown. Its fucking deep.
Thom York you are a treasure upon this lowly ball of mud that we live upon.

P.S: Seems we have different takes on the flow of the respective albums, I always thought that AMSP didn't flow well because of the "fast paced song first and slow ballad song next" thing the whole album has going on, same with the first half of Kid A, while the second half flows greatly. I’ve always thought In Rainbows has some jarring moments, particularly the transition from the growl-y “All I Need” to the plucky, folksy “Faust Arp”. Still, love them all so much haha.

To me, this song/video represents one of the great tragedies of humankind. In the video, we can see Thom is looking for something. We don't know what that something is (and probably neither does Thom) but nonetheless he relentlessly pursues it, opening door after door.
The places he ends up in are fairly random in nature, alluding to the idea that very rarely does the outcome of our decisions match our expectations. It's one thing to imagine (daydream) about a better future, but it's another thing to actually live it. Rather than ending up somewhere better, you just end up somewhere else. And the thing you're chasing feels no closer than it did when you started. But you continue the chase anyway because well... "dreamers, they never learn".
This continual process of running away from the past and bargaining with the future is what has got us to where we are today. It's given us running water, cures to terrible diseases and the technology that allows me to share these thoughts with all of you. But make no mistake, we pay a heavy price for this, and it comes in the form of suffering.
An endless suffering that wakes up with you in the morning, follows you throughout your day, goes to bed with you at night and haunts you in your dreams while you sleep. It never goes away.
Towards the end, the music changes to a solemn tone. He's running out of time. He quickens his pace and desperately moves from door to door. But despite his efforts, the thing he seeks never reveals itself. Finally he arrives at a mountain. Death, in the form of a monstrous voice beckons him from the distance. Thom knows his time is up. Instead of running, he climbs the mountain to confront the monster that has taken so much from him throughout his life. But when he finally tracks it to it's cave, he realises that there is no monster. And as he lies down by the warm, cosy fire that welcomes him, he smiles as he realises his suffering is finally over.
This song doesn't offer us an answer to this problem. It simply acknowledges its existence and the role it plays in our everyday lives. But in doing so, it reminds people like me that I'm not alone in this struggle, that everyone experiences it. Consciously or not. And for reasons I'm not sure about, that makes it hurt less. As the saying goes "A problem shared is a problem halved". I hope In sharing this with us, Thom has alleviated some of that suffering for himself too.

At the beginning I connected the dots between your comment and another one, which explains his vital issue around the loss of his ex-wife, whom he cheated on and even got to divorce. But after that process, she got cancer and passed away 💔 so the lyrics make even more sense to me if they talk about grief, loneliness and desperation for all those years (23 years = 23doors) wandering and losing the track of what is meaningful for him. It's like he filmed this after realising how unfruitful his journey after "the unknown" (another romance, greatness, professional recognition) has been whe he sings "Dreamers, they never learn". Until everything that he took for granted has finally disappeared ("And it's too late, the damage is done")

    • @BaronVonQQ
      @BaronVonQQ 7 лет назад +2

+Hector Reguenga well that's not what it's about tho. It's about how he just divorced his wife and all the rooms are different years he was with his wife each room is one year and in the last part that was him saying half of my life because it was half of his life that he was with her.

    • @calaverastargazer8853
      @calaverastargazer8853 7 лет назад +42

I'm aware that TY's relationship influenced the writing of the song like how the low pitched words at the end say 'half of my life' and even in the video he goes across 23 rooms which is the amount of years the relationship lasted (TY was likely 46 when he wrote the song, half of his life). Even when drawing from personal experience there's an aspect of art that is left to grow on the audience. My personal interpretation is that he tried to extract the feeling of drifting apart from his partner (not wife since they never married) because of his 'daydreaming'. The listener may not had a romantic relationship like that, but may have, at some moment, felt isolated or alienated from being 'somewhere else' at times. There is actual research on a condition called 'maladaptive daydreaming' in which people self-hipnotize and drift off to fantasy worlds or cling to memories to avoid experiencing the pain of the 'material' world. He is using his own experience to relate to the world at large, art is not about meaning one absolute thing even if the creator wants to.

I used to listen to this song when it came out, as a departure from a romantic relationship. But when she passed away, I've unlocked this other meaning: the fact that probably she would have gone forever, and it happened. So sad, but so true and heartfelt too. I hope Thom is doing good enough with that. When you lose someone you can't reach anymore, is something bearely understandable.

I lost my father to cancer a week ago, he was only 65. My dad only started experiencing symptoms 3 months ago and was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer 2 months ago. Everything happened so fast I cannot even process any of it as it feels so unreal, the only thing I feel is a unbearable pain of losing the most important person in my life that did so much for my brother and me and loved both his children and his wife so so much. He deeply enjoyed music with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Judas Preist ranking among his favorites but he would listen to almost anything and went to about 600 concerts throughout his life which included Radiohead. When he passed away this was one of the first songs that came to my mind and now I cry every time I hear it thinking about him, watching someone you love so dearly suffer in pain from cancer is heartbreaking; the endless search of answers of why did they have to get it? or why is there no way to cure them? is a type of pain that I hope no one has to experience. I'm only 26 and have never felt this kind of pain and sadness before, I think about my dad from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep, seeing such a beautiful soul taken from me like that has left the largest hole in my heart :(

Addicted to cocaine at the time for about fifteen years.... He never got to see me turn my life around, but i'm almost fifty now and I have been sober for over a half decade. This just crushes my heart and head with talent and creativity.
At the beginning, he was slowing pacing through the doors. He even smiled once when he was in a crowded area( a fake mask in front of others/ hiding grief). Then his pace started becoming quicker and more urgent. He preferred walking in the sunlight because it made him feel less lost in his mind. His face throughout all of it screams that he wants to cry out and yell his feelings to everyone but he can’t. His bottled up emotions are evident in his red eyes and twitching lips. He prefers to go out to nature. At first the beach, but no, that place is too crowded. So he ends up in a mountain full of snow. A mountain that describes his feelings: emptiness, cold, pale, unknown. He goes into a cave, a rather small one, contrasting to the massive mountain. It is only then that he opens his mouth and talks. He talks to himself in the small part of his mind where no one is present and no one is aware of the cave’s presence. He talks in a way only he can understand.
This endless loop of going through door to door is reminiscent of the stages of grief. He is stuck in a stage before the 5th and final one: acceptance. He isn’t willing to accept the death of a loved one so he walks away from everyone, puts up a facade in front of others, and doesn’t want to face reality. He wants to go somewhere where his feelings can be accepted. He can’t let anyone know about his unwillingness to forget so he goes to the fire in the cave. And lets out his words to burn. No one will ever know about his struggle because he burned it all in his head. The only problem is that the wound and ashes remained will only be felt by him. He doesn’t want to forget this ever. He prefers to always stay in his own personal “daydream”.

Matt Male yep, it is frightening. We have been programmed to accept only music that is pumped out daily. With lyrics telling us 'live for today and fook tomorrow'. Beats to shake female ass to and for men to watch, get drunk and procreate.
I'm not sure why these guys haven't been assassinated. Probably because the amount of people who love them, will not get in the way of the marketing of the BS music. There will always be more unknowing people than those that know. So, it's not a threat.
