why does everyone keep messing up the last line? It's 'squat', not 'squirt'. When someone gets stuck in an elevator they're told to squat down. The song is literally about the fear of getting stuck in an elevator, not orgasms lol
I like the idea that Thom here has just accepted the slow drag of life and descended until the eventual end-- where he wouldn't have to be stuck anymore. In the end, we are all on the same lift together. There is an end to the descent. And you don't have to cut the descent short. Whether you accept that or not, everyone wants you to stick around for a couple more floors. So stick around. Stick around with all of us and just... "let it go".
For a brief moment, the "01" in the elevator display turns into an "OK", then the doors open and Thom sees someone who looks like himself but isn't. That, I think, is Radiohead's lead singer looking back at the man he used to be when he made OK Computer. He walks toward that person, but he isn't himself anymore - there is only one Thom, and they ain't him. They turn around to face the real one; he stays put, looking back at them. Man, you can't say lift isn't one of the most emotional songs RH have ever made. because it's so.. applicable to everything. I see it as acceptance of living a mundane life, but being happy because life is still a blessing, so enjoy your journey, until it's tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmeee to come home. small edit: when watching the music video i saw at around 2:57 Thom is speaking to the electrician changing the lights, it's like "oh how are you doing that in a moving lift?" genuinely looks like he's actually asking, knowing Thom, he probably was. adorable
I hope the fact that they made and posted a video for this song at this point in Thom's life means he's getting better. We love you, Thom. Don't let the depression or the malaise of modern life take you. Don't let the awful thoughts and feelings that they engender take you. You can be content, you can live rather than kill time. So keep trying, and try the best you can. The best you can is good enough.
Living in Oxford, I've seen him in town quite frequently. Last time I saw him was 2 months ago, crossing the road in this same exact green coat and white shoes!!! It was the closest I got to him, and all I could say is: "I love you man!!!" He got sooo embarrassed :))) My girlfriend told me later that I didn't just say it, I've actually shouted at him. Ouch! It was one of those cathartic moments.
I've been visiting Oxford for a long time and actually bumped into him the other weekend :) I was so happy i couldn't believe it. Had Agnes with him so I didn't want to keep him but just basically told him I've been listening for about 25 years and he's amazing 😄also briefly discussed prophet synths which was awesome. ugh love it.
What a cool video, a gift for Radiohead diehard fans! Loads of references to Thom's life and previous Radiohead music videos. Ones I picked out: 00:20 Dajana (his girlfriend) and Agnes (his daughter) 1:04 shopping trolley reference to Fake Plastic Trees video 1:17 trees crawling in corridor reference to There There video 2:53Robin from Paranoid Android video goldfish scene 2:57 dancers from Street Spirit music video 3:13 floor no. 3 girl in bed on wall reference to Climbing Up The Walls from album no.3 3:33 the lyrics " today is the first day of the rest of your days" , possible reference to fear of growing old (&bald!) looking back at his life etc. May be reading too much into those but I'm sure there's loads more. Still trying to work out the significance of the bald estate agents (reference to Phil?!) and the old lady with the purple coat...
@@eemirann They know that because there was a show back then called Robin and he was the mc, Radiohead really liked the show so they asked the animator if he could do a music video for PA

Interesting things I've noticed so far: There a fake plastic tree on each floor. On 3:33 the 01 floor number flickers briefly and changes to OK. The guy on 2:52 resembles the Paranoid Android character. The fish bowl he's drinking out of is also a reference to the music video. The 10th floor (2:20) kinda reminds me of the High and Dry music video, I could be wrong though. Same goes for the 11th floor. I'll update more speculations when possible. Was there anything else I missed? EDIT: So here's a little update of what other possible references I got based on the replies. There's a shopping cart on 1:03, perhaps another possible reference to Fake Plastic Trees. The bald men in suits on 1:38 could either be a reference to the Just music video. It could also be reference to the lyric "the yuppies networking" from Paranoid Android or the man in the suit from the music video. OR maybe there's a Phil Selway cosplay going on.... The old man on 2:35 highly resembles the guy from the Karma Police music video. At 2:51, perhaps that's a reference to Kid A? Maybe that's too far fetched though... At 2:57, the women kinda resemble the women from Street Spirit. Someone mentioned a possible reference to No Surprises on 3:00, I'm assuming he/she is referring to the lighting? IMO, that seems too obscure. Surely they must be a better reference somewhere... Also, anyone found any explanations to floors on 1:30, 3:11 and 3:26?
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams
I love how relatable this video is. Thom looks like how I feel in situations like this, desperately trying to be part of something but always detached.
God, man...Radiohead's music never ceases to astound me as well as make me want to cry...It's so introspective yet reflective...It makes you contemplate the intricacies and simplicity of life...It pins your heart and penetrates your soul. It's like a hug from a friend who is passing on, melancholy but filled with love. Ok, enough monologue and back to weeping...
This song seems so ancient, yet perfect for its time. And it's always time for Radiohead. Update: thank you for the likes and for reading, everyone. Cheers
I've been in an emotional shell for the last year. What broke me out of it was coming back and listening to my favourite band. There's something so incredibly moving and cathartic about their music. Love you Thom!
After All these years Radiohead has never lost track of itself, still being deeply in what they really are. Probably the best band ever. Timeless masterpieces... Repect for making not disposable music. Greetings from Senegal.
Watchdog fun fact this song was unreleased and meant for OK computer but never made the cutting floor. Makes me think it was recorded b tween both albums so your interpretation is spot on.
I don't know why but the first few lines: This is the place Sit down You're safe now Always make me at least well up if not start crying. I dont know where home is and I certainly don't feel safe here. But I do love radiohead :)
I was honestly, positively convinced that this song's chorus was _"a smell of recognition / the face you barely loved"_ for almost two decades. And only this year I found out that I had misheard the lyrics *the entire fucking time...*
But is it? I've been re-listening to the pinkpop version (especially the higher quality recording which has surfaced recently) a lot lately and it's just that in Thom's enunciation "airconditioning" and "recognition" as well as "face you barely loved" and "fish are belly up" sound absolutely indistinguishable...
I'd describe it as delightfully surreal! I love that they've made surreal videos for all three of these finally released gems. Some of us have been waiting literally 20 years to hear these songs outside of poorly recorded live bootlegs. Lo and behold they are fantastic and all get the video treatment!
I heard this song ages ago (in 1996), like it might even have been in demo form during the bends era, but I've always loved it, and glad they brought it out officially (in 2017s ok computer reissue). Such a beautiful song. It just goes to show that styles may change, but every great song has its own 'soul' to it, that will be appreciated and endure whatever the style
Also, the guy drinking from the fish bowl is reference to the character in the paranoid android video, who wears the same outfit, and the guy drinking from a glass with a fish in it at 2:20.
You can never get old listening to Thom. Everytime I listen one of his songs I feel rejuvenated. Keep making more music Thom. Every single song u release is a gem for me.
I really love this song, because it speaks to a feeling we all have, but can't quite put into words. That feeling when you finally see reality for what it is, after a long time of feeling disconnected from it. It's not necessarily happiness or sadness, its more base than that, and much more simple, but it feels good, better perhaps than any other feeling there is. Sometimes we all get stuck in a lift, and we're unaware of the people trying to reach us outside, desperately trying to connect. Its that moment of clarity, when you come to from all the bullshit, and 'come home' to reality.
When i was 3 years old i entered a lift by myself at the lobby of a ski resort. When they noticed , My parents began stopping and searching every floor for me in a panic. Apparently some time later i strolled out of a lift into my mothers embrace as if nothing had happened. I was too young to remember any of this. But for as long as i can remember ive felt like a counterfeit in the world. Maybe im Really still on that lift. This is my favorite music video, thanks Radiohead
александр джаков In the first comment we were talking about the damn song, not the video. Why wouldn't you call this fucking art? This song is pure art, everyone is free to take inspiration from other videos. Goddamn.
Just a reminder that the dude from paranoid android is drinking out of a fish bowl and half the rooms aren’t the right way up, anything can happen in this elevator
isn't it weird how this is yet another radiohead song to which I can identify myself with, and yet another video they make which makes me feel like I'm understood by thom? gosh, this band is so amazing.
Just wanted to express my gratitude to Radiohead for finally releasing this song. It meant a lot to me many years ago, but it also means so much to me now at a different time in my life. Also, thanks to Mr. Oscar Hudson and team for making a great video, which I think adds to the song's impact, especially for those of use who are more visually oriented. So much packt into the song and video, but a few special takeaways for me: as a father, I laughed at how kids can throw a wrench in your plans just as you're starting to get moving. Also, not sure if intentional, but I though of the Harry Dean Stanton character from "Paris, Texas" (guy in red hat). I loved that movie, so maybe its just me, but I appreciated his inclusion.
That blonde girl is Thom Yorke's daughter and the Woman next to her is his girlfriend. You raised an interesting observation. I hadn't caught it that she was the one who sent him through all those different floors where he interacted with various characters.
i've been seeing this music video for years now and just now i realized that at 1:15 the guy with the ripped formal and red cap was a reference to Wim Wenders' 'Paris, Texas'

I've listened to this song for months and i can confidently say this song changed my life. From the music, to the video, to the symbolism, everything is crafted in a way to make you reexamine life and the fears that come with it. Your fears and anxieties that come with life arent as scary as you think they are. Thank you Yorke for this amazing song. Stay strong y'all.
I love this song so much. I like listening to it when I'm sad, because it feels like a comforting "everything's gonna be okay." I hope everything will be okay.
I love that song. It evokes nostalgia and at the same time it's a throwback to early 90's Radiohead. After all of these years of being shy from the studios, it's really time for this track to come home.
Great, i was dying to see the last of the 3 videos for this OKNOTOK edition. It is great how the capture the feel of that album, 20 old, like if it was yesterday. May be one of the best re-issues i've heard and seen. I hope they continue working together for a long time.
It's nice that Radiohead are now comfortable enough with their identity to release a song and video that is clearly more of a simple Bends-era song and doesn't have the complexity/subtlety of their later work
Man, this song is so bittersweet because I believe that Thom's vocals and most of the music was probably recorded in the early days of Radiohead. Thom's voice was most likely captured in his peak, capturing his essence and emotional feeling in full at the time. We probably won't get any future songs like this absolute gem. I'm sad but happy that I get to experience this song.
Wow, what a beautiful, bittersweet song. I've been a huge Radiohead fan since early high school (like 13 years or so) but was not aware of this OK Computer outtake until now. So this is interesting, it's like a new song to me, even though it's actually not new at all.
Tuan Jim I'm sad they removed this from the original release of Ok Computer. It's such a beautiful song, and I like it a lot more than most of the songs that actually made the cut.
You said it yourself that it wouldn't fit. Everything on OK Computer feels very intentional. It's not even my favourite album by Radiohead and I think it's overrated but this in terms of quality and lyrics and theme just would not fit. It's quite a generic song and sounds like something in between The Bends and OK Computer. It's a little too basic for OK Computer.
The young girl and woman in black at the start are Thoms daughter and girlfriend. See how his daughter presses all the buttons on the lift? Could this be representing all the many different stops in life he had to take once he had a child? And see how his girlfriend goes to the overturned plant and rescues it? Thoms original partner Rachel died last year, could this represent how this woman has helped rescue his overturned life? All comments/thoughts welcome guys! :)
Don't think they really represent anything. His daughter pressing all the buttons is just a dick move that sets up the whole video for why he's in the elevator (lift) for so long. His girlfriend "rescuing" the plant probably doesn't represent anything either - just a reference to Fake Plastic Trees. The whole video is apparently just references to other RH videos, so, if anything, the video is just symbolic of their career in general.
It’s actually on my bucket list to meet Thom and just thank him because his music has helped me through so much in my life and I just wanted to say thank you to him and his band for being there.
this is the summer that i graduate. 5 years of both torture and comforting struggle. if you told me 5 years ago that id have friends that care abt me and that we are doing the awesome shit that I dreamed abt? then i would of cried. each year some new shit has happened. ive had friends move in an out of my life. ive had family members die. ive been totally alone. i started on floor 11, now im on floor 16. there's been moments where my lift has been full of people. some where its been just a handful. even 6 months of pure and utter loneliness. stuck in a big moving metal box. but i told myself id make the most of it. id go along for the ride. make something of myself. thanks thom. this music video has put through me a whirl of thoughts. tonight. looking back on who i was, who ive become and who i will become. Today is the first day of the rest of my days So lighten up, squirt.
Did anyone else feel really sad at the end where the two Thom Yorke look alikes turn to the real Thom Yorke standing on the other side indifferently? I don't know why that was so impactful...
Thank you guys for such a wonderful video. Please make a video of 'Bloom' which I think is a very beautiful and thoughtful song as Thom described it as "an expression of wildness and mutation" . I really lose myself when i listen to Bloom. Love you guys.
3:11 On the 3rd floor it could be a representation of Amnesiac, and on the 2nd it is a visualization of KID A in chronological order (remember that the elevator is going down) then follow OK COMPUTER, I affirm this because the screen changes to OK. because OK as the first? I say it was the most important album and they take it as the beginning of a new stage, since thom enters the first floor and finds himself, so that another thom continues to go down, (thus finding The bends and Pablo). Correct me if you think I'm wrong about something
This song means something to me. In my point of view, "Empty all your pockets" meaning spend all your money OR stop spending your money. "Because it's time to come home." Meaning in my eyes, stop wasting your time with someone who doesn't care about you and come back to people who actually care about you. And the ending lyric, "Let it go" meaning move on from the person that caused you so much pain that you still love. And then, "so lighten up squirt" meaning don't let a girl bring you down. That's my own personal thinking of what the lyrics mean. I had a girlfriend a few states north of me. Long distance relationship yes. She used to live where I was then moved to Utah to study to be an environmental scientist. She was the greatest person ever. We met and we talked and did things couples do. But then, one day, she started becoming distant. So I decided to visit her for one week, she never saw me on any of the days. I continued to keep trying to see her but she kept avoiding me. I really love this girl, but should I hold on to her? Or should I let it go? When I finally realized what this song meant to ME, I cried, realizing that I must move on with my life and lighten up, because there's so much people in this world, just like there is in the lift. Radiohead really is the greatest band ever.
A meaning I caught on was more on the lines of depression, and how a lot of the time it’s impossible to feel cared for “you’ve been stuck in a lift and we’ve been trying to reach you, Thom”. To me this song is really just that feeling that people actually do care, and that getting all stuck in a sad moment is almost like running away, hence “it’s time to come home”. The song really does feel like a hug from a good friend, it’s a warm and sweet song. But that’s just my take on it.
I think empty out your pockets means letting go of the things thats dragging you down coz ur "at the bottom of the ocean". The things on your pockets is whats keeping you down, so emptying them is a release, freedom
This is honestly one of the most comforting and happy songs I have ever heard. It feels like a hug after a long and lonely rainy day.
I legit cried when i heard this for the first time. Life was particularly hard at the time so it felt like this song was soothing the heart.
Whenever I'm extremely sad I just sit down and listen to this song and cry it all out.
Are we listening to the same song?

In the end, we are all on the same lift together. There is an end to the descent. And you don't have to cut the descent short. For a brief moment, the "01" in the elevator display turns into an "OK", then the doors open and Thom sees someone who looks like himself but isn't. That, I think, is Radiohead's lead singer looking back at the man he used to be when he made OK Computer.

Imagine being in an elevator with Thom Yorke.

tal yorke Hey wait, I've seen a comment by you on another Radiohead video...

Ed O'Brien has such good backs line.
Ed is literally the stoner of the group.
Man, you can't say lift isn't one of the most emotional songs RH have ever made. because it's so.. applicable to everything. I see it as acceptance of living a mundane life, but being happy because life is still a blessing, so enjoy your journey, until it's tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmeee to come home.
small edit: when watching the music video i saw at around 2:57 Thom is speaking to the electrician changing the lights, it's like "oh how are you doing that in a moving lift?" genuinely looks like he's actually asking, knowing Thom, he probably was. adorable
A day that starts with Radiohead releasing a new video is a fucking blessed day.
sweaq123 except when u have 12 hpurs of werk 😖
I hope the fact that they made and posted a video for this song at this point in Thom's life means he's getting better.
We love you, Thom. Don't let the depression or the malaise of modern life take you. Don't let the awful thoughts and feelings that they engender take you. You can be content, you can live rather than kill time. So keep trying, and try the best you can. The best you can is good enough.
i like the integration of two lyrics into the comment
Thom's work has touched so many people profoundly positively.
Same.
I’m not Thom but this comment today was a very motivational message for me to keep trying and do my best

Listening to this song while being literally stuck in an elevator waiting for someone to arrive is actually something else, once in a lifetime
Ouch! It was one of those cathartic moments.
whatt why is it that when i lived in oxford i never met the guy !! hahah
you are lucky !
I believe you. My friend told me he saw the whole band walking in a public bar once.
Lol he got embarrassed but he's used to it 😂
If you saw any of them again, please shout again for the rest of us who could only wish we could! WE LOVE THEM ALL!!
Ones I picked out:
00:20 Dajana (his girlfriend) and Agnes (his daughter)
1:04 shopping trolley reference to Fake Plastic Trees video
1:17 trees crawling in corridor reference to There There video 2:53Robin from Paranoid Android video goldfish scene
2:57 dancers from Street Spirit music video
3:13 floor no. 3 girl in bed on wall reference to Climbing Up The Walls from album no.3
3:33 the lyrics " today is the first day of the rest of your days" , possible reference to fear of growing old (&bald!) looking back at his life etc.
May be reading too much into those but I'm sure there's loads more. Still trying to work out the significance of the bald estate agents (reference to Phil?!) and the old lady with the purple coat...
uberlover I thought they might be politicians "electioneering"
Anna Devito interesting theory, but they seem to be holding signs selling houses...
I don't think that lyric is specifically referring to ageing, considering the song is quite old itself
The guy in the suit that stays reminds me of the guy in the Just video

Interesting things I've noticed so far:
There a fake plastic tree on each floor.
Nathaniel Torres Yeah, you missed something. Instead of saying "I could be wrong" you should have said "I Might Be Wrong"
I wasn't referencing that song, I was saying I could be incorrect about my speculation.
Nathaniel Torres I know, I just couldn't resist
LOL! It didn't even occur to me that you purposely mentioned another Radiohead song! Excuse me while I rethink my life...
At 2:20 reminds more to knives out don't know why
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams
3:33 Love how the floor number changes between '01' and 'OK' near the end. Nice touch.
Good datail
I love how relatable this video is. Thom looks like how I feel in situations like this, desperately trying to be part of something but always detached.
God, man...Radiohead's music never ceases to astound me as well as make me want to cry...It's so introspective yet reflective...It makes you contemplate the intricacies and simplicity of life...It pins your heart and penetrates your soul. It's like a hug from a friend who is passing on, melancholy but filled with love. Ok, enough monologue and back to weeping...
Imagine getting stuck in an elevator with Thom.
That would be quite the chat.

But I do love radiohead :)
I was honestly, positively convinced that this song's chorus was _"a smell of recognition / the face you barely loved"_ for almost two decades.
And only this year I found out that I had misheard the lyrics *the entire fucking time...*
TheForgottenKing22 that's the second version, you had heard correct
But is it? I've been re-listening to the pinkpop version (especially the higher quality recording which has surfaced recently) a lot lately and it's just that in Thom's enunciation "airconditioning" and "recognition" as well as "face you barely loved" and "fish are belly up" sound absolutely indistinguishable...
I think it is. Unless you wrote the lyrics in various sites i checked
You realize that Radiohead is amazing when even the misheard lyrics are beautiful.
I think nearly everyone heard it that way. There was a bootleg from the 90's called a of smell of recognition! lol.
I have no words to describe how amazing this is
Mrs Me Covfefe
Genius!!!
i have 2... 'not very'
Mrs Me synonyms:astonishing, astounding, surprising, stunning, staggering, shocking, startling, stupefying, breathtaking
1-Radiohead* 2-Their* 3-Radiohead* corrected, thank me later

I loved that movie, so maybe its just me, but I appreciated his inclusion.
thanks to the blonde girl who pressed all the buttons, otherwise we wouldn't have a music video.

Just a regular trip to Thom Yorkes apartment, I'm positive this won't be the weirdest thing to happen to him that day.
Great, i was dying to see the last of the 3 videos for this OKNOTOK edition. It is great how the capture the feel of that album, 20 old, like if it was yesterday. May be one of the best re-issues i've heard and seen. I hope they continue working together for a long time.
It's nice that Radiohead are now comfortable enough with their identity to release a song and video that is clearly more of a simple Bends-era song and doesn't have the complexity/subtlety of their later work
This song is from ok computer though. They made a music video for it recently however.
It was never released until 2017
It really really wouldn't have suited the album. It is more of a Bends song and even then isn't on par with those.
if you liked this video, watch this is a lift on my channel.
It is actually a little older. The older version played live is a lot better IMO and is rumored to be the inspiration for Coldplays yellow.
Radiohead.. just the best.. ohhh Radiohead..

probably the last scene is thom yorke discovering himself after seeing his whole life go trough
And perhaps coming to terms with the past versions of himself, who are now, unrecognizable to himself.
One day I will meet Thom and say thank you for being there for me whenever I needed him and hug him and he will hug me back and it will last forever.

Correct me if you think I'm wrong about something
they're the best band in the world and this song is just perfect.

Spin the black circle coldplay ripoffs? bro you fucking sure say that?

Achmad Dhani Maulana i mean yeah they ripoff a lot from muse too
This song means something to me.
Underrated
A meaning I caught on was more on the lines of depression, and how a lot of the time it’s impossible to feel cared for “you’ve been stuck in a lift and we’ve been trying to reach you, Thom”. To me this song is really just that feeling that people actually do care, and that getting all stuck in a sad moment is almost like running away, hence “it’s time to come home”. The song really does feel like a hug from a good friend, it’s a warm and sweet song. But that’s just my take on it.
It's vague enough to mean something to everyone
I guess this song really can mean different things depending on our situations
I think empty out your pockets means letting go of the things thats dragging you down coz ur "at the bottom of the ocean". The things on your pockets is whats keeping you down, so emptying them is a release, freedom
