This is a bloody good example of the difference between claimed performance and actual driving. According to the numbers it's no contest, on the road it's a completely different story.
I think Type-Rs are so appealing because of how much bang for the buck they are. I'm not just talking about speed and lap times, but the noises, the feels, the sense that you're driving a great piece of Honda engineering.
I do not drive Honda nor Audi. I have a C36. But my wife has an Audi A4 and my daughter a Civic with a VTECH engine. God only know how many times the Audi had to be taken to the dealer for some reason or anther. Even the electric window winders had to be all changed apart from the weird number of ball joints at the front which failed from time to time. The Civic ..Never Never Never. It is dam reliable apart from that the engine pulls the car so easily, its like being free to go and accelerate anytime, any speed, anywhere. Honda remain the most advanced engines and without compromising reliability. In this comparison you have a standard Honda 2000 cc Engine 4 cylinder no turbo £30K and amazingly this Honda 4 cylinder can easily keep up with an Audi 5000 cc (more than double the capacity) and 10, yes it need 10 cylinders and £100K. So can you imagine what Honda or Mercedes can give you for 100,000. That audi Is a rip off to me.
COSECCO Hi, hope you are well. I was not a Mercedes man. From age 21 till age 50, I always believed in Alfa Romeo. My first car an Alfasud 1.5ti with autodelta race kit (webbers and cam) which I raced. But at age 50 I needed a diesel car to do loads of miles overland and I was told to buy a second hand 190 Diesel which I did. This car proved to be dam reliable, extremely confortable and absorbs the bumps incredibly well and the road holding since I do not drive slow is not just excellent but extremely predictable and incredibly good. After 5 years we all could see that all our new cars which we garage every night too, had problems and had to be taken in from time t time. The Mercedes was always left outside, it started every day with out fail and never needed anything nothwitstanding the miles which I used to do. The C class which I bought after this was bullet proof too but the steering box was gone and rack and pinion took over instead which I changed after 122,000 on the C Class. The 190 still goes with all original parts and it has 189,000 miles now,
oh okay . i did not asked you for this but thank you for describing me the old Mercedes C class . I belive it extremly reilable car . i remember i saw a post where they were showing the top 10 cars with over 100 000 km and few mercedeses were on the top but few audis aswell . maybe it just counts for the 2005-2010 audis
Jm Bh ,i won't buy another Audi for the rest of my life . i had all kind of problems with my Audi SUV. Thanks, to the maker of Vtec ,i have an MDX for almost 3 years ,no brakes, steering ,powertrain and sensors problems.I just change motor oil every time my oil life shows 10%.German vehicles are extremely unreliable
lloyd Y Benwa I agree 100%. If you want reliability there is no doubt in my mind that Japanese are the most reliable. We bought Toyota Yaris as company cars. They are dam reliable and they have all the conveniences, you name it, they have it. Honda & Toyota are exceptionally reliable.
At the end of the day, theres hardly any any car companies that can mix performance with total reliability. Honda can, Audi, VW, BMW etc cannot. Simple. Yes we all like to drive a R8 but people need to get real. Hondas are a great and sensible choice. Those who can afford 400-600 quid servicing bills from BMW need their brains testing.
Yes, yes, yes. I regularly push 911 GT3s (strange wave of those around my area) and non-turbos to actually work hard. Turbos all seem to be heavily modified...they see me in the mirror and well BOOST kicks in and they walk me like I'm standing still. I love it. I love that guys with such fantastic cars both par taking with me. Keep it up my fellow car guys!
Wellll the R8 has about 300hp over the type R!! I would hope in a stretch it would loose the type R atleast a lil lol... Theres nothing better than Honda Power.. that type R its sick
The reason why the Mugen is expensive beacause....They are rare. Not many of them are built when ever they build them. Its a Honda yeah....But its been through Mugen tuner hands and makes it from a production car to very very limited run build....Its common sense people.
Alright, but its still way overpriced imho. Whats a base si cost? 24k or somewhere around there? Asain manufactuers are just flipped haha, like the lfa, 450k?! I mean really???
People still buy them. Like Cadillac...They actually suck as a sports car. Like not a opinion they just really do. But people still think their great and buy them. Nismo 400R only 44 made go for over 100k a car.
ross burton They are limited edition collectibles. The prices on them will not drop only get higher. And Toyota actually loses money each time an LFA was built.
Marcello Wheeler Yes the LFA looses money every time its sold, this is due to toyota completely scrapping a fully designed car, they were not satisfied, twice! the LFA entered the market having to cover the production costs of three separate and unique supercars attached to it. no car could be profitable in this scenario, in conclusion, a lot of respect to Toyota for building the car they wanted rather than a car that would make them money.
ross burton Toyota as a company simply do not run on the basis of the production of IFA's. It is a simple advertisement for their engineering standard.
I'd love to own that Civic Mugen Type R. It seems like such a fun car to drive. I used to own a modded R34 V Spec GTR with almost 500hp at the wheels and while it was really fast and beat everything on the road, I later learned that I enjoyed more simple cars. I now own a Lotus Elise and it's not the fastest car on the road, but it's so enjoyable to blast around in. I have more fun in it than the GTR.
yeah right bitch if you had the choice to choose now inreal life r8 or honda you would kick the honda in the ocean
10 лет назад+23
No bitch... if someone would give me the chance to choose, I would take the R8 sell it and buy that Civic, or probably some older car, like a Toyota AE86 I really love those cars!
"This is a public road. We're being ultimately sensible here." Well if you're not going to go over the speed limit, how do you expect one car to ever lose the other?..
How stupid are people on these comments? The moral of this video is that you don't need a powerful expensive car to have a fun driving experience, it's like people who buy a 1000cc motorbike and can barely go past 3-4k RPM without worrying about the front tyre popping up, yet they still claim to have more fun thrashing around a 250~400cc motorbike. The Honda actually did really well and I'm impressed how it handles those corners, obviously once the straight opened up it lost it, but to be fair look at the price comparisons, imagine spending the price difference on that Honda, it would absolutely destroy that R8.
Downforce at the rear is very useful in high speed corners and for high speed braking, so a rear spoiler on a FWD car is not pointless. In fact cornering and braking stability is the main reason for a rear spoiler. Not so much for acceleration traction for RWD.
All cars that most of us would have a hard time paying for. I personally like the sound of hi-revving 4 bangers. Honda's VTEC engines all have that signature sound when the switchover happens, especially in the early VTEC engines. It's like you hit that certain rev, a banshee awakes in the cams, and that tach needle screams all the way to the redline. To me, that's a thrill that becomes addicting. Don't get me wrong, I like a big V8 rumble, but screamers are more fun at the redline.
FrightfulAccountant I like German and Japanese Cars.... but as they stand the latest top spec (2015) GTI is slower to 60mph (6.2) then an unmodified (2010) FN2 Type R Mugen (6.0). Put a Turbo on a FN2 Type R (which costs £3,600) and it would comprehensively chew up and spit out an already Turbo'ed GTI. I would say that adding a turbo to a Type R equates to a level playing field specification wise (Both are 2.0 cars) and even with the Turbo added It would still cost around 10k less than than a 2015 GTI (You are paying a lot for a VW badge). As a side note the latest Golf GTI isn't even in the same class as the upcoming 300bhp Type R :) which is going to cost £30K... the same amount as....wait for it.... the Golf GTI.... The Civic Type R FN2 Mugen, sports car looks and performance for hatchback money :)
A few mods on the Type R,such as a turbo etc the Type R would be a match for the Audi R8,and also the Type R is beginning to grow on me,I wasn't too keen at the start but like I said it's starting to grow on me :-)
MrFujiwara AE86 Of course Honda's are always going to be fast at corners. Always will. But in a straight, nah man, the r8 got it. So why test it downhill? It's going to be the same results. Sure it's lighter, but the r8 will catch up easily.

MrFujiwara AE86 hey the man is a hero...but at the end of the day its the skill of the driver and not that many people have that ability and not a lot of you people can't handle going down a mountain road at excess of 80 to 100mph oh and to say that's slow shows you haven't done that amount downhill (oh but everyone is a racer on the youtube comments) No I live in a mountain area and since I was a kid been going up and down the roads... With or without abs/tcs/stability control jajajaj and the r34 was completely bone stock as for the 86 has everything except electronics to help it
V10 vs a four cylinder for what it is... a work of art,and its keeping up there will always be a valid excuse to not hate a reliable Honda car( mostly), 6 less cylinders awesome!
dibi203 No shit Sherlock, i am from Australia we drive on the left too. But at 2:37 he is driving on the wrong side He knows he cant overtake so he is then driving like a moron. I am sure they closed off the road for the filming but you cant go saying we are going to drive sensibly then go driving in the middle of the road.
Did you not see how close he got to that R8 around every turn? If he didn't go wide sometimes he'd probably hit. He wasn't trying to pass the R8 but stay behind it.
And the r8 was not going full ballers either. Far faster and awd grip. But on some hairpin turns like that any small agile car can stay with a supercar.
+James Lovett I'm not disputing what is faster or better. I'm just stating that he probably went wide so he didn't end up in the R8s rear during those turns.
Well, you just need to wait till the Audi brakes down, which doesn't take long just as the other crap from Volkswagen. In difference to Failwagen/Audi you can drive the Honda on and on without worries of expensive repairs. Thats the secret of Japanese Quality in comparision to German slave labour.
People like you are the issue with the car world. I've had two Volkswagen's one was a 1.8T Passat with 350hp that lasted for 250k miles and am currently on a Jetta that is at 75k miles both I have had almost no issues with. The issue is how you take care of it. It's simple if you take care of the car it will work for a long time plain and simple, I also know many people with high horsepower volkswagens and audis doing 100k miles.
Nope, the issue with the car world are companies that set marketing before quality. I know a lot of dissatisfied Volkswagen and Audi drivers, who got nothing but problems with their cars. Do a search for DSG or 1.2l / 1.4l TSI issues, you'll find plenty. If you're searching for German quality, Mercedes Benz is your friend. www.maxrev.de/files/2013/02/thumbs/t_2013_02_03_12_38_21_honda_and_toyota_top_the_engine_reliability_ratings__motoring_news__honest_joh.png
hes pushing the limits of the civic, the audi driver is LITERALLY cruising. to say the civic can go around a turn quicker than an r8 is utterly ridiculous. and besides, 55 grand??? are you freaking joking me. you're talking about BMW 1M's for that much, which is ten times ANY honda...
Exactly. You can hear the Honda screaming and nothing from the V10. Look at the lateral forces the R8 can produce and it would be long gone if the driver put any effort into it.
John Jerrehian Nonsense. On those corners the Civic has the advantage. On the exits and straights the R8 opens up and leaves it sitting. If you listen to what he is saying it can keep close to the R8 sometimes but not always. But to say that the R8 is cruising is just not true.
bighands69 The only advantage the Civic has is the entrance speed and that is questionable. The R8 with it's low center of gravity, mid engine, Quattro and wide tires has an abundance of ability that is not being used to the extent of this video. Yes, he says they are on public roads and even around 2:30 seconds questions if the Audi is being driven hard. Have you ever been in an R8 V-10? When they are on at the top of their RPM range they scream and you can hear that howl a long way off. Not in this video. Friend of mine is a manager of an Audi dealership in FL and you would be very impressed of what the R8 can do if you were in one. Put on a track when the two were pushed and the Honda would be gone, even in the turns.
John Jerrehian look at the brakes... every corner the civic has to brake because the civic can come in faster, but exit speed is faster. even with all those facts your missing the point of the type R. its pretty much a race car with aircon.
The Type R is sexy as hell, a great design. I own one in black and it's fantastic. If you don't like it then why search it? Get back to your Fiat Punto!
Personally Id prefer the Mugen Type R. Dont get me wrong, id love an R8 - i love the look, performance, status, etc but knowing myself, i wouldnt be able to utilize all of the power whether it be on track or off. I dont think anyone would be able to use all of the power due to being on public roads. Id take the civic because the threshold of power is easily usable in all scenarios. Audi and Honda are great companies. Why all of the bashing? Would i say that one car is better than the other? Not necessarily....You people sound like children. Cheers from the US!
Saw this very car today on the motorway the Civic Mugen MU09 GEN plate. lol. i remembered the plate from the first time I had watched this video and saw this very car today. haha nicee
Same thing as before touring car racing, we used to have minis / escorts and cameros / mustangs, the small brits would go around corners faster but the big lumbering yank tanks would overtake on the straights, the whole race was a continual seesaw. As for me I would have the Honda Civic Type R Mugen.
The point here is(for those who missed it): you can't/shouldn't push the audi to its limits on public roads but a hot hatch you sort of can. And pushing a car to it's limits is a lot of fun. I'd obviously still get the r8 tho.
"Almost too fast for roads like this...but not too fast for a 200 hp Civic." Come on now, the Audi R8 looks great but with twice the power is barely outruns a civic, it's one of the slowest 500hp cars around.
The point of all the was to show that you can have fun in a hot hatch. Everybody knows that the cars weren't pushed to the limit. AND everyone knows the R8 is way faster than the civic. BUT this shows that DESPITE of the price of the civic, it's fun to drive and from him it's worth the money when you are on ROADS like that. Idiots I swear....
What makes them uncompareable? They are obviously in different classes, but I am talking performance wise. The Civic being fwd and lacking the amount of power the r8 has doesn't mean you can underestimate it, Type R line up has ALWAYS been ahead of its class.
This is the reason why civic were created as a fwd....to go nimble and fast on cornering...not mainly for a straight 1320... indeed civic were not fast...but it's bloody fun to drive ngl...
Also want to see a comparison of 2016 Civic Type-R with the likes of Audi R8. Would love to get a Civic Type-R when it comes to the US market, to replace my aging yet super reliable 2000 Honda Odyssey (I am almost done raising my family). Driving a Civic with a stick shift also gives me the feeling of youthfulness. After all, Civic was in my mind a car for young people getting their first cars. I need this feeling now as I am getting "old". The only down side is, my garage is full of Hondas.
I don't drive a Type-R but I drive the closest thing I could get in North America ; The 02-05 Honda Civic Si. Mine has the Mugen Sports Suspension, an A'pexi World Sport II muffler and an AEM V2 intake. I know it has nothing against the real hot hatches that the European market has but it drives so purely and better than most new "performance" cars on the roads these days.
the ep3 si might be similar chassis but it IS NOT the closest Honda in the US, the ep3 si does not even have actual performance oriented vtec. the closest US car to this would be something with a real k20 or maybe even an older dohc vtec type r
It's a full Mugen car. It's about as close to the original civic as the word Mugen is to Honda. The Mugen versions' only goal is to have fun and go fast while maintaining easy driveability for car enthusiasts, whereas the original civic is trying to be an all-rounder for everyone. The difference between the two on the track is huge.
@darthjader08 Yes I did. My uncle has a carcompany in our country (The Netherlands). I clearly know that the Audio has more power. I drive a Honda Integra DC2 now, and if i wanna drive luxerey I drive the Audi. But if I want to feel the real power, the 'kick', I step in my Honda Integra!;)
When it really comes to turns.. honda has the upper hand. See the driver of the Typer is stepping on brakes when turning just to give the r8 time to recover speed. Handling and manueverability is the key point to this video.
All the people on here who are saying they would take that TypeR over the R8 don't even have a fraction of the money to buy an R8 to begin with! I like them both, but don't kid yourself, in this video, the R8 was always slowing down to stay within limits, whereas the TypeR was driving at at top revs almost all the time.
Man i wish they sold this in the US. The Si isn't enough to shut up the straight line huge engine guys. and that vtec sounds really good in the mugen too
This is a bloody good example of the difference between claimed performance and actual driving. According to the numbers it's no contest, on the road it's a completely different story.
own a s2000 and drove the civic r, is a great car. honda rules.
even better with boost :-P
This just goes to show how good Honda engineering is. To get that kind of performance out of a 4 cylinder is amazing. Ain't VTEC great?
Power of dreams Honda is the best

That would be very annoying going for a quick drive in the R8 and seeing a pesky hatchback all over your tail thinking their faster than you.

It’s amazing that Honda can make a car with 120hp per litre, revs to 8600 rpm and yet is incredibly reliable
The Golf GTI gave us sportscar performance for hatchback money.
The Civic type R sportscar looks for hatchback money ;)

The new futuristic outlook is kinda hilarious. I like more the old Honda Type-R.
Thats awesome considering its a 2 litre as opposed to an R8.
Now try the comparison with the new Honda NSX
And then compare a Veryon W16 Grand Sport and a Vauhall Corsa, that will make fun of the car.
+Phoenix agree with you
2:38 The Audi takes the corner nice and slow, and stays in it's lane. The Honda has to go wide to keep up. Also the Audi driver was barely moving...
MKSpots maybe the driver in civic was "old timer" guy...lol😂
point being, you can have more fun in a hot hatch than a super car on typical British roads.
A point seemingly lost on almost everyone 😆
Video should have been titled Audi R8 V10 *(Driven cautiously)* v Honda Civic Type R Mugen *(Driven hard and fast)*.
No bullshit
Shut up the civic is better and the r8 is driving hard too
+Chog Ountonight really I thought that was the r8 that was red lining the whole time. I need need to get my ears checked.
MAD DOG turbo fn2 would smash that Audi up 😂😂😂
V-TEC KICKED IN YO!
The only reason the car sounds loud is cos of the epic VTec
Top Gear = Professional Idiots
Autocar = Totally idiots
Maybe they try to do comparison like lambo vs evo FQ400 on top gear, but this one? Rubbish!
Random Spot They ARE idiots, or at least acting like idiots. And that's why we love them.
Audi R8 lawan AYLA aja deh :v
ngePOOR 3 kilo hahaha
Wait.....wait....wait....Civic R Mugen cost 38,599 pounds? That's around $55,000 US dollars. That's Corvette C7 money........
Yeah, but C7 can't turn and hasn't got VTEC :D
You think that's insane?
In Denmark a secondhand Toyota GT86 costs about the equivalent of $66,000. IIRC that's about the price of a C6 Z06.
NucLe4rCZ You mean variable valve timing guy? hahaha
ross burton no, i mean VTEC, best valve timing and most exciting thing in the world
;)
NucLe4rCZ SO exciting, better than skydiving hands down...
V10 vs a four cylinder for what it is... a work of art,and its keeping up there will always be a valid excuse to not hate a reliable Honda car( mostly), 6 less cylinders awesome!
Hey message me
Claims to drive sensibly while driving on the wrong side of the road.
In england they drive on the left
dibi203
No shit Sherlock, i am from Australia we drive on the left too.
But at 2:37 he is driving on the wrong side
He knows he cant overtake so he is then driving like a moron.
I am sure they closed off the road for the filming but you cant go saying we are going to drive sensibly then go driving in the middle of the road.
at 2:40 its just so much more agile and lighter...thats why u were going all over the road way out wide while the R8 was stuck in its lane haha
Civic Type R Mugen this car really hugs the corner and catches the R8 Tail very very fast. respect for such a small car and small engine

Before you become a grammar Nazi, it might help you to research on how reliable these companies are. Greetings from Germany.
its preference....
www.reliabilityindex.com/top-100 just under half of the top 100 are Japanese and a handful are German. Speaks for itself really.
hes pushing the limits of the civic, the audi driver is LITERALLY cruising. to say the civic can go around a turn quicker than an r8 is utterly ridiculous. and besides, 55 grand??? are you freaking joking me. you're talking about BMW 1M's for that much, which is ten times ANY honda...
Exactly. You can hear the Honda screaming and nothing from the V10. Look at the lateral forces the R8 can produce and it would be long gone if the driver put any effort into it.
John Jerrehian
Nonsense.
On those corners the Civic has the advantage. On the exits and straights the R8 opens up and leaves it sitting. If you listen to what he is saying it can keep close to the R8 sometimes but not always.
But to say that the R8 is cruising is just not true.
bighands69
The only advantage the Civic has is the entrance speed and that is questionable.
R8 is not a usual Audi, it's better in corners then straight line, most Audis are opposite.
3 Honda 4 ever
Honda 4-ever
The 4cyl sounds better than the v10 lol
rice rice baby
Hey buddy! :)
Carlyle's Picks Oh hi!! Could never expect you to comment my comment. haha! made my day!!
Carlyle's Picks
Supercar vs Japan hatchback= not even worthy for comparison
Personally Id prefer the Mugen Type R. Dont get me wrong, id love an R8 - i love the look, performance, status, etc but knowing myself, i wouldnt be able to utilize all of the power whether it be on track or off. I dont think anyone would be able to use all of the power due to being on public roads. Id take the civic because the threshold of power is easily usable in all scenarios. Audi and Honda are great companies. Why all of the bashing? Would i say that one car is better than the other? Not necessarily....You people sound like children. Cheers from the US!
Boost this civic And will will shit All over that audi!
enjoy fwd noob
William Gunn u dumb fuck get off my comment
The only thing a Hon-duh shits on is it's owners ego.
both cars sound amazing!!
Nice roads any ideas on where this was filmed?
Type R rocks !!!
Wow, you must win every argument in school with those witty observations. Teach me you ways, master!
still a great car
Great analysis, should make more videos like this
what road are they driving on? I would love to drive there
In Wales,not sure what area?
threepot thanks, I was also wondering. Amazing area.
type r is my baby
Why? The type-r is almost like a toy compared to the r8
The Vtec sound just awesome
The type R sounds better :)
0:51 VTEC just kicked in YO!
What's the song in the beginning?
Does the mugen version have independen subspension
You guys have earned my respect
The point here is(for those who missed it): you can't/shouldn't push the audi to its limits on public roads but a hot hatch you sort of can. And pushing a car to it's limits is a lot of fun. I'd obviously still get the r8 tho.
can someone tell me the difference between Civic Type R FN2 and Civic Mugen Type R??
i love Honda , but nice try with this show
"Almost too fast for roads like this...but not too fast for a 200 hp Civic." Come on now, the Audi R8 looks great but with twice the power is barely outruns a civic, it's one of the slowest 500hp cars around.
I love the Honda, it's the epitome of "the little engine that could" high reving 2 liter, I enjoy these cars very very much.
Can't wait for the next versus.
MAZDA MIATA VERSUS FERRARI LAFERRARI.
You're gonna love it.
you under estimate the Mugen its truly awesome
What makes them uncompareable? They are obviously in different classes, but I am talking performance wise. The Civic being fwd and lacking the amount of power the r8 has doesn't mean you can underestimate it, Type R line up has ALWAYS been ahead of its class.
This is the reason why civic were created as a fwd....to go nimble and fast on cornering...not mainly for a straight 1320... indeed civic were not fast...but it's bloody fun to drive ngl...
I was able to pressure a Diablo SV round a track to an embarassing degree in an old Ferrari 308 !? One of the best drives i've had!! :)
This guy is not Mike Brewer from the wheeler dealer's?
Numbers are only a starting point, but ultimately it all comes down to the driver.
Both different cars and experiences, would like to own both one day
I don't drive a Type-R but I drive the closest thing I could get in North America ; The 02-05 Honda Civic Si.
But if I want to feel the real power, the 'kick', I step in my Honda Integra!;)
the funny part its that the civic was actually racing in this video loll
love the Type R!
that Civic is going HAM trying to keep up.
LMAO the guy in the Audi didn't even know they were racing.
0:52 v-tak kicked in yo!!
For reliability, low maintenance, trouble free.....I choose FN2R over Audi R8.
Most of all, Real Mens Drive Three Pedals!!!!!
i like how 2 secs after he goes on about how sensible they are going to be it cuts to the honda crossing the centre line haha
:52 badass vtec cross over! God I love it!
Honda- "The Power Of Dreams"
Man i wish they sold this in the US. The Si isn't enough to shut up the straight line huge engine guys. and that vtec sounds really good in the mugen too
It's also weird since I've heard a lot about how the Audi R8 is one of the most comfortable supercars out there.
great review, real world test.
Nice video! But wait a minute, is that Audi 6 cylinders more than the Mugen...?! Why comparing them then!
That’s the mugen that smashed in to the oldest e type at goodwood
