Im curious as to how much this system costs completely finished? The amount of solar panels looks reasonably modest.

As someone who has been off grid for 4 years here in Chile, I like to say that it costs a few minutes of pain but gives almost a life time free of ELECTRIC BILLS.
This does not even come close to considering all the wasted time you spent with making payments, DEPOSITS, dreading that monthly bank draft that comes out even though you have had a hard month, dealing with the power company customer service who treat you like a mushroom, having to justify to the power company your requirements, having to go sometimes days with out power while the power company seems that they are maybe working to get things hooked back up! The pain of throwing out thousands of dollars of meat and frozen food that is ruined because the power company could not find the break in the line....
I dreaded talking with the power company only to be told, well all your neighbors power is on! It must be a problem with YOUR HOUSE! Idiots!!!!!!!!!!
For years I felt like a slave to the power company (and the bank too). I felt like they robbed me every time I paid my bill, because I only had ONE place I could buy my power and they were sure to rub my nose in that fact. It was like, here is the knife in your back, now pay and PAY HARD!
Independence is worth all the blood that has been shed for it!
Solar is worth all the money and more that I paid for it!
      Plain and simple. Jim

Building off grid is not much different than building on grid. The main difference is where you get your power. On grid has no limits - you pull whatever you need and pay for it. Off grid requires some planning and understanding of your unique power requirements and you select equipment that will meet your needs. Some off grid people have full homes with all the bells and whistles and some people have the very basics like lights and plugs and then work hard for everything else (carry water from the source, have a wood fire for heating and cooking) . Everyone's lifestyles and different and off grid setups can be just as different.

@@name-ey5it of course - there may be some regulations depending on where you live - and if you want insurance or occupancy, you may have to meet some requirements. You should check with your local municipality.

Hi just wondering what these folks do for running water? Also what they do for a bathroom set-up (i.e toilet and shower). Did they have any problems with permits or building codes do to the nature of the build? I'm assuming they reside in Haliburton or the municipality of Dysart et el? Was curious if they needed septic, or if they could do a compost legally? I want to build a small off grid cabin with a solar set-up from you folks but was wondering what hurdles I might run into in regards to running water, waste management, minimum size of build, etc. We are very remote and would like to do things by the book, but I've heard some horror stories in terms of development fees, building permits, etc. Any feedback you could give would be great.

Hi Joe. The best thing to do is call our office 705-455-2637 ext 102 and speak with Brian who has been living off-grid for 10 years. Every situation is different, and everyone's needs are different but you need to start somewhere. Some people have wells drilled and others draw water from a nearby lake. Some people have septic systems while others may have composting toilets. There are building size restrictions issued by the individual municipalities but that is all something that a local builder or even the municipality itself would be able to help you with.

Thanks! This is a full-time home with 4 kilowatts of solar on an East-West split roof. It provides two power curves to a 120 volt inverter. The homes energy is provided from a 550 amp hour battery Bank providing complete power year round. If you want to know more give us a call or visit www.haliburtonsolarandwind.com
