Happy Ascension Day!🚀Celebrating the Ascension of Christ to Heaven with one of the best organ pieces I know: Messiaen’s "Transports de joie d’une âme devant la gloire du Christ qui est la sienne"!🤩Yes, that’s how long the title is…!😅Which translates to "Outburst of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ which is its own glory".✨Let that sink in for a bit. As so often, Messiaen digs really deep into Christian theology, and as often there’s a subtitle consisting of Bible quotes: "Give thanks unto the Father who has made us worthy to be partakers of the inheritance of the Saints in light… has raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (from the epistles to the Colossians and Ephesians). The piece form the third part of his "L’Ascension", four symphonic meditations for organ. While nos. 1, 2, and 4 are indeed very slow and meditative, this is quite a different interpretation of what a meditation is, according what we usually think!💥Hereby I have recorded all four movements, so feel free to listen to the entire suite: ruclips.net/p/PLPCwDAYIBu1YT1bdgx5Ss4RqNfg3rTO0c And as always - don’t forget to click the thumbs-up and subscribe!😃

Tack!

One of my all time favourites! Actually when I started practicing it I kept stopping because I kept getting too overwhelmed by joy to be able to play😅

I love the whole Ascension Suite, but Transports de joie, it my absolute favorite piece and the whole reason why I began organ lessons 60 years ago. I have heard the Orchestral Suite (original score by the composer) and Messiaen uses a completely different approach for the orchestra, which has nothing to do with this piece at all. The other movements are identical only scored for organ. Since Messiaen was a synesthetic person (can taste and smell colors and notes and also create an entire language - in French) is able to put down on paper the pure ecstaticness of the situation as presented. Messiaen's copious use of natural overtones (only actually written down in the score) Tetrachords super imposed upon each other, blindingly fast very difficult octave work in the hands. You make it seem organic and natural. I also love the 20 Regards of the Infant Jesus for Piano that you have done. Very expressive and very accurate. I had an old LP by someone from the 1970's and that was remarkable but you bring life to the entire piece as you have done for Transports!

Thank you for kind words 😊 Yes, I love this piece too! I played it in concert today (the entire suite actually) and an old man came up to me and said he didn’t know it was possible for an organ to laugh…! I never even thought of some these passages as laughter, but he was right, Messiaen actually makes the organ laugh! I’m pretty sure some of the other Regards will pop up on this channel in the future, I really love Messiaen…
