Airfix Sunderland Part 10 Build Completed with Blobby Pilots and Popping Rivets

- The Airfix 1/72 Short Sunderland is now completed. In this video I recap the build over the last 3 months, then paint and install the blobby pilots, fix up holes in fuselage which the beaching gear had temporarily used, plus make those rivets pop! Then the decals go on and she comes alive. I also stab myself and have a total airbrush failure. Lots to share about the final hours of this build.

Thanks!
Super Thanks Mikie
the Sunderland is eye popping Harry Megs and Biggles Blob must be proud to have a Brand-new plane
The blobby pilots are just happy to get those toothpicks out their rears and into some comfy seats for a change
She's a beaut Harry, done the old Belfast girl proud!
Thanks Randal
Good to see the old girl finished Harry, well almost, bar the weathering, and looking forward to that episode. It really is a great job on this classic kit. Looking forward to the next project on your list of things to do. Keep them coming mate, and cheers for now!
Good on you Gary… back to ships next week
Really good work Harry. You have transformed a vintage kit into a modern showpiece. A lot of work but really worth it!
Glad you liked it David
Great work Harry, you've created a beast of a model. Enjoy the feast I sent you,😉👍
Yes that beast bit me! Thanks for the shekels
It's a handsome beast, Harry. Just like the real-life counterpart that earned the nickname of, "Flying Porcupine", the kit fought you all the way! ;-)
There have been some prickly moments but I got there in the end Doogle
What an awesome job you have done there Harry, A little TLC with those older kits works magic. Good to see BASK took care of you, but she was probably only wanting an extra feeding😁.
Yes that cat is insatiable.
Museum quality Harry. Well done old bean. Look forward to the weathering. All the best old bean.
Thanks Bren 👍
That has come out beautifully,One of my childhood favourites of what where, even then in late70s, older Airfix kits.A Great looking Aircraft helps. The work put in has defo resulted in good results out. 🖖
Thanks matey, it was a labour of love.. and pain.. with blood spilled LOL
Good job! I loved the bluesy jazz guitar music.
Thanks Jimmy… it’s the kind of music I like to play myself
Looks terrific. I love white and white and grey aircraft. I also really like your trick bringing of bringing out the rivet detail with a worn or very fine sanding stick/pad. That’s really clever. 😊
I stole that idea off another video, but it is an old trick
I remember building the Sunderland kit as a kid in the 70's so it was probably the same production run - you did extremely well there, it's not the easiest to build because out of the box it's half toy and half model.
It was a challenge, but always had a lot of potential
Did one of these in the sixties as a boy and repeated recently after buying one at Telford UK IPMS show. Original was 17/6 old money ( less than £1)!. Weathered from various wartime pics - they became quite scruffy. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane. 🇬🇧
They did get grimy… mine will be weathered when I make the seaorama
Great work. Very nice "old" Sunderland 🙂👌
Good on ya matey
Gidday mate.🇦🇺 I spotted this series of yours on building the Sunderland, having built one myself way back when i was a lad. The box art looked very familiar. Well you have inspired me to build another one, i only hope it turns out like yours. Will be referring back to these vids as i build. Thank you Harry😊 buy the way,my nickname that I've had since i was a lad is "H" 👍👍
Great to have been of some inspiration H, enjoy your build
Very nice model, a pleasure to watch. Cheers from 🇵🇹.
Good on you Bruno
Stunning build Harry 👌 Looks absolutely wonderful. Learnt a few things watching this build, not least that you do whatever you want to. Love your attitude towards modelling, so much fun to watch. Cheers Harry.
All the best from the UK 👊
Fun is the key… its a hobby… if you are not enjoying it then why the bloody hell are you doing it!
@@HarryHoudiniModels 👌👍
Great build, loved watching it come along.
Good on you Steven
Very nice work! 👍🏻 It would look even better in bright pink with Hello Kittie stickers however.😉
I think Becker is planning to make one like that
It looks awesome !! Great job Harry !! 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you Harry
You are welcome Cos
She looks lovely mate.
Thanks Paul
Brilliant model Harry well done.
Thanks Stephen
Thanks
Super Thanks Dave.. appreciate it.
Sublime work, Harry!
Thanks matey
Top job..it's a lovely model especially as white is a bugger on any model
I’ve gone snow blind staring at all that white
G'day, I got this Kit for my 12th Birthday, it was the Biggest Kit I had ever worked on,very frustrating at times,I am now in my 70s but still remember it well!
I could not afford it with my meagre pocket money in the 60’s but always dreamed of building one. Now I have.
Another great video, I'm becoming an addict!
Buetifull model!
Watch them all… hehe
I certainly will 😊
Top work Harry
Thanks matey
awesome job Harry.. looks amazing
Thanks
Love it
Thanks
Great build 'arry! This series inspired me to get a 1:72 Matchbox Wellesley, this one a re-pop by Revell from 1997 but even the box art is original. A very good model, just like the old Airfix ones and some similar work to get the fit and details right...
The old kits from the 60’s and 70’s were great.
Great finish and a good series as always. Not sure the ‘Black and white minstrels’ reference will win you many plaudits but your content should. Best wishes.
Well at least I didn’t say Golliwogs hehe
@@HarryHoudiniModels Absolutely, Law enforcement, denigrated by local politicians etc…. I seem to remember that back in the day even Mr Blobby came in for some stick for body shaming! You can’t win it seems. Best wishes.
You just showed that there’s a lot of life left in those old Airfix kits, it just needs a dedicated modeller and some hard work. Good on ya mate. 😍
Yep the old kits can be very rewarding with just a little TLC
@@HarryHoudiniModels 🙌🏻 high-five Harry.
Bonjour Harry , tres manifique 😎😎😎😎😎😎 have a good one mate
Mon duer la Sunderland fin, c’est manufique mon amie.
looks good Harry
Thanks Shane
Nice one Harry! ✨🥇✨
Thanks 😁
Fantastic work, HH. I love your presentation of your problem resolution thought process!! Thanks HH.
I learned all my techniques from fixing my own cock ups LOL
Always an Outstanding video and presentation. Great build!
Glad you enjoyed it
Best quote. " I've gotta pull the sticks out of their bums"......
Well it would have been cruel to push them further in…
That reminds me I, I need to get back to the RAF museum in Hendon.
Sounds like a plan Nick
Great job of a a great looking aircraft
Thanks Steve
Looks great mate 👍
Thanks Anthony 👍
Yep, file sticks really handy..
They are useful Bill
Very nice ❤
Thanks 🤗
A great build lot of work I done this one I did the best I could do on it
Thanks Bradley
Looking good Harry. What's next 🤔
The St Louis is already back on the bench, but I have a surprise video out before that.
Nice result! I really like that sanding trick to reveal the rivets. Really subtle but very effective. Where did you get the spinning propeller discs from (I didn't quite catch what you said)?
My friend David Eaves got them off the Internet, then scaled for the Sunderland and printed them on acetate for me.
A great job Harry, I remember building it back in 59/60! Have you finished the ST Louis, or is it still a work in progress?
St Louis built but needs rigging… on my bench now
Cool Harry..I just picked up a pak of plastic rods..figure work good for some antennas I need to fix up...
It can fix a lot of things, although I use brass rod for antenna, harder to break with my wombat paws
Looks great Harry, you did an awesome job with a shitty kit.
I have it on good authority, from a Tamiya fan boy, that the Airfix Sunderland has better moulding and fit than the new Italeri and Super Hobby versions. Sure you don’t get much interior and there is a little you can improved, but I am told the panel lines and shape is far more accurate… if you get an early moulding, remember it was tooled in 1959, then it fits well and has minimal issues going together. Mine was easy to build, I just enhanced it to 21st century modelling standards. Not shitty at all.
Well done Harry! I'd send you some coin but they've put the rent up and the dog and cats still need to eat, maybe next time.😊
No worries David… we are all in the same boat… I am having to sub let half my house to pay bills.
Nice work Harry looks great, don't you hate it when PE wants to kill you...
I’m going back to my ships… where all I get are splinters!
@@HarryHoudiniModels 😆😆😆
Ive watched this over 2 days makes my 1970s attempt look pretty lame.
My kit builds in the 60’s were pretty basic too… 60 years later and you get some skills
Dad flew the MkV with 209 Squadron, RAF. Sadly, I never managed to finish one for him before he passed away. Airfix really need to bring out a new tool of this legendary aircraft, in all marks.
I think Italeri and Special Hobby beat them to it.
@@HarryHoudiniModels They did indeed, but I haven't seen any on the shelves in our local shops. Airfix mght be stocked more easily.
