Something that helped me improve my airbrushing was starting to use it for shading and weathering, teaches fine control unlike anything else for me. But the most important thing is do what works for you and that you enjoy
As a returner (at age 73) to plastic kit modelling I found this video very instructive. The information about airbrushing has made me have to give it a try on a 1/48 Supermarine Spitfire....wish me luck!
Another cracking build son 👏 I love watching your builds and your Fiat G50 is mint. I've got one in the stash. I have to admit that back in the day that was my first axis plane that I built. Keep up the great work son 👏
Really enjoyable video. I have "battled" with airbrushing for 2yrs (breaking two airbrushes in the process). After Christmas I purchased the new H&S Ultra airbrush with its beginner friendly features. Not cheap but an absolute game changer. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Good, tutorial, Matt. You've covered the basics of a/brushing for those who've never ventured into this side of the hobby. This is a good guide for those who are contemplating dipping their toes into the water for the first time.
Great video! You painted it up very well, and it's nice seeing you collaborating with other modelmaking youtubers! Maybe I should get into airbrushing...
@@ModelMinutes Don't think I didn't see that Fairey Rotodyne in the back of your studio by the way, I'll be looking forward to seeing that in a future video ;D Gotta love the big flying submarine
An airbrush works wonderfully to prime, unless of course you don't have primer or you have a "rattle can" to use up. I recommend Vallejo primer. I use a little isopropyl alcohol to clean the remnants of paint in the cup- don't want to have chips of old paint mixing with the new paint and gumming up the works... Thanks for the video.
Got a fondness for this old kit. I made it in the early 70's but my mum put the transfers on! 😊 My mother paid two shillings for this . 10p in todays money.
people always forget about inflation and the purchasing power of money when comparing it to the past. I did some reasearch and whilst a shilling would be the same value as 5 "new pence" - 5p in 1970 is not the same as 5p today. 5p in 1970 has about the same purcasing power as 70p today, so this kit would have cost about £1.40 which would still make it quite cheap - but then I guess the manufacturing and raw materials (and the scale of manufacture) would have had a hand in keeping prices lower
@@johnnoble01yes, sadly many things seem to be more expensive these days. At least there are some kits out there that still cost less than a coffee from starbucks . . .
Nice build. I've picked up the army painter speedpaints too. They definitely take some getting used to, but I am enjoying them for somewhat larger-scale figures than 1/72nd. I think the faux-shading they do may have issues at smaller scales.
Hi Matt. WRT airbrush painting, a couple of thoughts: a) You didn't mention using airbrush masks, which might make complex patterns a bit easier. b) In a previous video you used cutouts to mask for camouflage painting. Could you do something similar here; scan the box art / painting instructions, print and cut out the scan, then cut out the camouflage pattern and tape the scan to the model as a mask?
Interesting thoughts - I didn't see the point in covering masks in this video, mostly because this focused on free-hand mottling (and the canopy was so small masking it was pointless in my opinion) - it's something I could do in the future though. I did actually consider scanning and printing a camo mask for this one, but thought it would push the complexity up and not improve my freehand skills - it would be another technique that could be used and I might look into that in another build
Have I been using the Airfix plane stand wrong all these years? I always put the plane on the stand with the stick leaning forward and the prongs pointing forward.
Nah, I just like putting them on this way because I think it looks cool. The Airfix logo is on the side with the 2 prongs so that is technically the forwards face. But then again, in a hobby such as this, quite often people say there is no wrong way to build your own models :)
I’ve bought the vintage classic SM.79 still not feeling brave enough to do it justice. I’ve seen a few different methods ranging from using shower gel, marmite and hairspray to get that unique camo right.
@@ModelMinutes think you did such a great job with you b17 a larger scale would be intresting maybe a longer term build along with your small scale priojects , watch you r vids from your early builds and impresed with your progress

14:24 the first time I painted my cockpit was when I built the a6m zero model kit.I had no small brushes so I used a toothpick!
I've used them in the past, can be handy!
I built this kit a couple of years ago for exactly the reason of having fun airbrushing!
Great minds!

glad you think so!
We need more videos like this
I'll see what I can do - I've been working on some content both using and not using an airbrush
Nice model Matt, a great little kit to practice your airbrushing skills on and yours turned out great.
thanks very much!
Couldn't make the premier as I had a consultation booked, but it was so lovely to be featured! Lovely video and amazing work as usual! 💟
Thanks for participating 😊
Fantastic job on that old kit mat really impressed with the finish
Thanks!
Very nice, interesting airbrush techniques, certainly going have a go, thank you Mat.
Have fun!
Great build vid and full of well thought out and useful information. Another kit to add to my collection!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice new intro 👍 And a guest star?? Woohoo 🎉🎉🍾
😁
The speed paints work much better over a zenithal highlight, either with an airbrush, although a brushed on highlight works better
yes, i agree
Sorry had to leave the live video. Thanks for your advice on this.
No worries!

Good freehand airbrushing, and a nice example of a less well known plane
Many thanks!

i cant wait you finally painting a italian vehicle for the first time i think im pretty sure but still cant wait to see the results
You might be right - could be my first Italian vehicle on the channel
Looks good 👍

Not bad, I like simple build...not so excessive in everything.
So cool. 👍

more 1.48th scale please or even a 1/32nd great vid

Modeler's Kryptonite: Squiggles, dots, and smoke rings...
:)
is milk thicker than water?
i suppose that depends on the definition of "thicker". I suppose desnsity, suspended solids etc all have a part to play
my dad owns an airbrush he never uses it and says i can use it if i want to but for now i will stick to brushes and rattle cans
fair enough
