    No matter what Pit thought most people in Britain weren't actually that scared of the French revolution as there was literally no chance of our monarchy becoming actually powerful again and power was already in the hands of parliament. Opinions changed when the terror started and the mass killings.
    Our war was about trade not any desire to stop Napoleon's little crusade of destruction at first until napoleon turned decided to try to invade England. We really went to war with France because of them trying to cut us out of trade...
    The people of Britain actually thought that the French revolution would be like the American one and they saw that as a fairly good thing. Obviously parliament has a different view but still. Things only changed when the mass killings of the terror started and then Napoleon trying to replace the standing monarchs with his own. Please don't anyone try selling the crap that napoleon cared about freedom etc. As he said. He replaced the kings and changed nothing for the people at all. Other than making them fight for him.

It's actually worth doing a few short quick videos to get the upload time down in between the big ones. This comes from some paper on the you tube algorithm. Pitt paid back the British war debt? Britain added 140m of debt to finance the American war. Britain's total public debt at the end of the American War in 1783 was 268m. It was 262m just before the beginning of the French war in 1793. That's a reduction of 6m during ten years of peacetime under Pitt. Not much to crow about.

    • @AncientAccounts
      @AncientAccounts  4 года назад +1

      Yeah you're right, stabilising the financial situation is what I should've said, I didn't see those figures in any of my sources, in regards to 268 and 262 though, also he did create/add to a sinking fund which helped contribute to a stable financial situation, but explaining all this would detract from the overall video and the minutiae would bore most people, also is that public debt just to do with wars? There's a lot of other things that could contribute to that debt otherwise

    • @khalidcabrero6204
      @khalidcabrero6204 4 года назад +1

      Fair enough. The public debt figures are general, but they are mostly accumulated from past wars. One new thing Britain discovered in 18th C. (and others didn't) was the elastic magic of public debt, and its wars were almost entirely bankrolled by them. Which is why 18th C. Britain punched above its weight - British government could use finance to mobilize & deploy more ships, men & guns than countries twice its size. It just kept piling on the debt every war, and kept rolling it over rather than paying it back. Sure, there were efforts to raise taxes in peacetime, but they were generally feeble and barely made a dent. Sinking funds were largely theatrical - they were set up with great fanfare to shore up confidence, but then routinely raided after a while to cover current expenses. Overall, they paid very little back of wartime debts. Didn't really have to - interest was relatively modest, 3% usually. English merchants & gentry were generally happy and eager to hold government bonds.
      If you want full stats: Britain (England) had less than 1m in public debt in 1689. It added 21m during 9 years War (1689-1697). Paid back 5m during the subsequent peace (1697-1701). Then added 37m during War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), paid back 7m during subsequent peace (1715-1740) (admittedly, it would likely have paid back more if not for the South Sea Crisis of 1720). Then added 32m during War of Austrian Succession (1740-48), paid back 3m in subsequent peace (1748-1756), added 64m during Seven Years War (1756-63), paid back 10m in subsequent peace (1763-78). Added 140m during American War (1778-1783). So Pitt isn't really doing any differently than his predecessors in paying back a measly 6m during the peace. It's a fine tradition. If only the French crown had this kind of credit....
      If you're curious, Pitt added a massive 336m of additional debt during the 1790s for the French War (1793 - until resignation in 1801). Total British public debt at the end of the Napoleonic Wars (1815) was a whopping 885m. Despite running constant budget surpluses for the next 25 years of peace, the debt still stood at 845m in 1840. They only finally paid the last outstanding bit of that in 2014. :)

      Well, sort of, democracy "starts" in 1066 with William the conquerer with his councils then goes to 1215 with the magna carta and keeps going along to 1688, this is all done in England it only involves the other countries in 1707 with scottish input and 1800 with ireland, and they both used the same parliament as england at the time,

    Alot of complints
    I mean, I dont wanna be harsh but the idea Britain was defending itself against France is ridiculous. The 1st (before france' revolutionist government declared war on britain) second and third coalition were put in place to keep the aristocratic nations safe, essentially enabling their tyrannic dictatorship style leadership to remain across the whole of europe. Pit was just a naive/scared high class pawn which the aristocratic classes used to remain in power. Napoleon and the french fought under liberty, equality, fraternity. The rest just wanted to crush any freedom for the people and were willing to do it at the cost of their own peoples lives and minds (indoctrinating them with all sorts of propaganda) ...a little like whats going on with brexit atm.
    Lower classes mind-washed by elites when the real motivations are a lot more callous than what the people think

    • @AncientAccounts
      @AncientAccounts  3 года назад +4

      You do realise this is a biography on Pitt right? So I’m explaining his actions and his thoughts and what he thought
      , Secondly I’m not exactly gonna agree with you that the French Revolution and Napoleon were all about freeing the lower classes, and that’s why he and France, went to war. The reason France went to war the first time was while the king was still alive and he did it to (A) Bring food to France and invade Austria for grain and b) to have a short term victory to try and regain public support.
      I’ll agree with you with the fact that the aims of the allies, in the 2nd and third coalitions were to stop France, but the main focus wasn’t idealogical it was because France started invading neutral Switzerland after a treaty they signed, saying they’d leave it alone, that isn't spreading freedom, its breaking a treaty, and no matter why they say they're invading, its a breach of a treaty, and thats why the war started,
      furthermore to claim Napoleons main focus was to spread freedom during his control over the french war effort isn’t right, he reinstated slavery in hati, although with his conquests he did depose kings and set up republics in the spirit of the revolution , they weren’t mainly to just overthrow monarchies ,it was mostly used as a buffer between France and its enemies,
      and finally, most of these republics only lasted a few years until Napoleon claimed himself emperor and annexed them into France.
      When he took power in france he shut down newspapers, and censored most of them, He overthrew a democratic govt and made himself bascially absolute ruler.
      Bascially my main thing is, it’s not as simple as “Napoleon wanted freedom” and the other people wanted to stop him doing that,

      You've ended up with a very biased account due to the tone you chose, but ill concede to the fact its the way pitt saw it, even if I don't feel free/modern/thinkers; having done the research you clearly have, should be surreptitiously adapting its connotations.
      You said multiple times, "France descended into revolution" as if its a bad thing.
      Its highly nuanced but the tone of the whole lecture is very anti France (post revolution) and very pro-aristocracy...those two factors (and many more which i can pull up if u want) precisely go against "the freeing the lower classes" in fact. Democracy seems to not be something you favour, and if thats not the case then maybe you should rethink the values you choose to promote...vicariously through Pitt
      The justification for the invasision of France for "breaking a treaty" is comparable to "weapons of mass destruction" in that its merely an excuse to attack. The real reasons Britain(through pitt from the king down) joined, funded and continued to fund against France was for fear that the revolution or napoleon would eradicate their tyranny if he made it over the channel.
      Napoleon was an elected official, he took a vote on him becoming emperor from 1st consul, and took more elected decisions throughout his reign, a reign shortened by the efforts of Pitt and the British.
      I never said it was simple but napoleon was a by-product of the revolution, had been close with the jacobin faction (even being imprisoned for 2 weeks) and instilled many futuristic causes that we, the western world, take for granted today. To even suggest that living under the policies of Napoleon (barring wartime measures) was a less liberating form of life is to completely burry your head under the aristocratic sand. It saddens me that such mindwashing of smart, intellectual "normal people" today are still mindwashed by the idea of (even a sterile) monarchs importance, and those who fought or were bought for their cause. Please think for yourself. Compare policies and know what napoleon represented. A Philosopher king. A chance...but a chance lost to propaganda like this.

      I have to leave some nuance and in depth explanations of certain aspects due to this being a beginners introduction to Pitt, and the period in which he lived, and also because this is RUclips and in depth explanations of why the various coalition wars broke out (and whether the reasons hold up to scrutiny) wasn’t really my focus for this video because that will make most people click off, (and RUclips really pushes you to have a good average viewer duration to grow) and also would detract from the narrative focus,and would be harder to follow, (The reason why I say descended into revolution is tied to this, mostly because it’s dramatic and hooks people more)
      As for your arguments I do see a lot of merit in your arguments that France was more democratic (in some aspects) than Britain, and Britain was intent on preserving aristocratic control and suppression of the principles that sprang forth from the revolution (such as putting Paine on trial, but alas due to the above paragraph I could never go in depth in a RUclips video assessing and weighing up these ideas (most people wouldn’t be interested sadly)
      Although this comment exchange was really interesting and has raised some good points and when I go to uni next year, this would make a good topic for my essays and maybe final dissertation
      PS. Your compliments on my channel despite our somewhat opposing viewpoints, I greatly appreciate, and it’s good to know that people see and value the effort I put into my videos :)

    Ah yes Pitt the Younger, the biggest european warmonger of the early 19th century.
