  • Who were William Pitt the Elder (1st earl of Chatham) and William Pitt the Younger? How do their personalities, parliamentary leadership styles and careers compare?
Sammy Sturgess puts these questions about the former Prime Ministers to the editor of our 1660-1832 project, Dr Robin Eagles.
Their conversation charts the Pitts' contrasting personalities, approaches to political life and leadership styles, but also covers some of the overlaps: both were exceptional performers in Parliament, who sacrificed their health in attaining near legendary status as supreme leaders during times of war.
The History of Parliament is a research project creating a comprehensive account of parliamentary politics in England, then Britain, from their origins in the thirteenth century.
