Fasting vs. Cancer Cells: Positive Science- Thomas DeLauer… Cancer cells have 10 times the amount of glucose and insulin receptors as a regular cell, which means that they are 10 times more likely to be susceptible to the negative effects of glucose, which is exactly why fasting is so critical when it comes down to cancer prevention and potentially even cancer treatment.
So, here's the thing. By now, we know that fasting is extremely powerful when it comes down to dictating how a cell uses energy, how a normal, healthy cell within the body uses energy. Basically, fasting will help a normal cell start to utilize fats as a fuel source significantly better through manipulation of the mitochondrial machinery within a cell. But let's take a look at how cancer cells are different from traditional cells, and in doing so, we understand exactly why fasting has such a profound effect on potentially treating cancer.
So, here's the thing. Cancer cells cannot utilize aerobic metabolism. What does that mean? It means that cancer cells can't utilize fats as a fuel source. They can't create energy by combining oxygen with fat, whereas a normal cell in the body can. You see, cancer cells get almost all their energy through processes known as phosphorylation, which means it's the fermentation of glucose, or the fermentation of glutamine, that essentially ends up giving a cancer cell energy.
What does that mean? That means that cancer cells thrive on glucose, sugar, carbohydrates. And this isn't a carbohydrate bashing session. Don't get me wrong. That's not what I'm doing at all. I'm just saying that a cancer cell is 10 times more likely to utilize that sugar in a negative way simply because the insulin receptors are 10 times more than they are on a traditional healthy human cell. So when it comes down to a healthy cell, a healthy cell can go ahead and utilize fats whenever it wants, whereas a cancer cell ends up saying wait a minute. I can't use fats. I'm just going to use more sugar and become more efficient at using sugar.
To start making some more sense of this outside of just the whole glucose side of things, there was a study that University of Southern California conducted that was published in the journal called Cancer Cell, and this study took a look at gene expression, which is a pretty interesting thing. It took a look at regulatory T cells. See, in our body we have these things called T cells. They go around and they slap labels on foreign bodies to have other T cells come around later and kill them. It's what basically is our immune system and what basically fights off disease and foreign bodies.
Cancer cells are essentially a foreign body, so when we have a cancer cell that comes into our body and it starts to proliferate, starts to metastasize, we end up having an up-regulation of T cell activity. We have a lot of T cells. But the other thing that we have to pay attention to is that our body is very good at adapting, and that means that even though cancer cells are bad, once they make a home in our body, our bodies welcome them in and do things to protect them, which means we start creating specific T cells that will actually protect the cancer cells.
You ever wonder why cancer is so hard to fight? Because cancer does a really good job of hijacking our immune system and making it so that it's still really difficult to target, because every time we try to target a cancer cell, we're also targeting a healthy cell. So there are specific T cells that actually protect cancer cells, and through fasting, USC found that it ended up down-regulating specific gene expression of something known as the HO-1 gene inside a regulatory T cell.

I had stage 3.5 colon cancer in 2019. We removed part of the colon containing the cancer and had half year chemo. So far cancer free. I also do IF and OMAD. Just did a follow up with my oncologist and he is comfortable about my survival. He said, up to my current status, I have less than 5% of chance to spread. So I am a cancer survivor. Let’s keep it this way.

Chemo is brutal. I start this Friday for breast cancer - triple positive. It's a toxic roller coaster ride. Six months is a lot. I'm supposed to do four months. I am currently doing OMAD and fussy about what I eat - KEYTO. In looking for what else I could do, I came across this. Another cancer patient (prostrate cancer) stated that fasting before chemo and after chemo gave him less side effects. We'll see. I sincerely hope you stay cancer free!

Christians and other religious folks have been fasting for thousands of years. In India, they also did it. I believe the type of fasting must have been a water fast - your pastor drank water but did not eat food. Dr. Jason Fung has done a lot of research on fasting, and if you read his book - longer fasts are very effective. I also do believe in prayer as well. Glad your pastor is doing well.

I started fasting 43 years ago, when there was very little research on the subject. I knew Jesus said to do it so there must be something magical about it since God created our bodies and knew what they needed. It does many other good things for the body as well as kills cancer. In our 50's my husband had just come off a 21 day fast and went to the doctor to get a regular exam. The doctor entered the room after several tests and said "what in the world are you doing? You have the heart and organs of a 20 years old!!" We are now in our late 60's, do OMAD and periodic 3, 7 and 21 days fasts. We pray we never get cancer but if we do we plan to aggressively fast. Thank you for the video.

I started fasting over two years ago. My family didn’t like it and thought it was very unhealthy. I fast pretty much everyday. When I start weighing less than I want to weigh I just open my fasting window a few hours. I went from 220 to 185. I stay around 184-190 now. When I first went down they thought I was sick and unhealthy. It took them a while to get used to it. I don’t like weighing more. It doesn’t feel good to have a really full stomach. I’ve tried everything over the years and it’s the only thing that consistently works. It’s not really that hard to do and you can bend it if you have to. Like if my wife has a birthday meal I’ll splurge. I love it. Wish I knew how to do it when I was younger

Hi, Thomas. Some 12 years ago I had a high grade, stage 2, Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. My prognosis was a 30% chance of surviving for 9 months and around a 5% chance of lasting 5 years. My general practitioner had been treating me for tonsillitis and told me that “it was nothing sinister “ At the time I had been trying to lose weight by following a version of the Atkins diet. Here in the UK intelligent information on such topics was to say the least in short supply. So I had added a fasting day once per week. I have spent years cursing the Atkins diet and blaming it for causing my cancer when in reality, given today’s more enlightened thinking, that combined with my slight adaptation may just have saved my life. I hope this comment may help others looking for answers and my profuse apologies to Dr Atkins, may he rest in peace. Thank you so much for your brilliant and informative publications. Also, I would explain its link to bowel sluggishness and colorectal cancer (animal products have ZERO fiber), and how all animal products are associated with dis-ease any where in the human body (humans are anatomically and physiologically primates). My son knows more about the powers of ketone bodies, and intermittent fasting than the world renowned doctors who treated him for grade-4 gliomablastoma brain cancer 3 years ago - and his doctors likely won't disagree.Their expertise lies within medical research and treatment - not so much nutrition. In fact the average doctor reportedly gets only one semester of nutritional education throughout their years of education. So the powers and wonders of nutrition and its profound and positive effects on the human body are left up to others who have the passion and education for it.

Unfortunately, you need to develop your own personal anti-tumour, low acid and anti-inflammatory diet. It is not as simple as this video implies. Balanced sugar fruits best. No refine sugar. Vegetables need to be the right ones to boost vitamins and minerals. Best to do blood tests on your deficiencies and develop an ingredient lists. Go as organic as you can afford. Pure water helps. Good luck.

Thank you so much Thomas, for these videos! I was aware of keto dieting when I first read the Akins book, and I did that diet for several years (in my thirties - I am now fifty) and was the healthiest I'd ever been. Somewhere along the way though, I went off it and was too lazy to discipline myself to go back. Over the years, the typical American convenience food diet had a very negative effect on me, and in my 40's I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I was in pain every day and constantly tired, which made it even harder to eat right. I tried though. I did calorie restriction diets, and even did juicing like Joe Cross, and while there was some temporary benefit to those diets, they were not sustainable, and even the juicing did not produce very dramatic results at all.
I have been pre-diabetic for ten years and a few years ago I was also diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I had been on T4 and T3, and then this year in April, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The day I received the cancer diagnosis was like I got hit in the head with a brick. I went through all the stages of grief in about twenty minutes, accepted this was it, this was my last chance to do what I need to do, and I went home that day and started to clear out my pantry, and decided no more sugar ever again. I wasn't going to feed the cancer!
So I started a keto diet, as I had learned from Atkins, and joined keto subreddits, and learned so much more about keto dieting. I bought MCT 8 oil and Kerrygold butter! I take keto electrolytes too. I did the keto diet for four weeks and my doctor took blood during a pre-op check, and my A1C was the lowest it had been in ten years. My cholesterol was excellent, and my iron and vitamin d which had been low prior, were in perfect normal range. My doctor (vegetarian) who had been against me doing a keto diet, finally admitted it was good (at least for me) and said, "Keep doing what you are doing." My endocrinologist also took me off the T3, and sees me again in two months, and I have a feeling she will lower my T4 dose too. I am currently at a 27 lb weight loss in just two and a half months, and my fibro pains are significantly less now too.
In addition to all of this, through your videos, I have learned about autophagy, and wet and dry fasting. I did one 24 hour wet fast, and just did a 24 hour dry fast (except for a small amount of water I had to sip for medication), and to me the dry fasting was so much easier. I didn't have as much hunger pains on the dry fast. I am trying to get off the dry fast as you suggested in your video, and will eat small amounts of bland foods, and add salt in very slowly.
I was told yesterday that I will likely need chemotherapy, along with radiation. I mentioned fasting and autophagy to several doctors, and they all looked confused. I explained what it was and why I was doing it, and that I wanted to make my body stronger before I underwent these treatments. I just found this video this morning, so it gives me even more hope.
One thing I would like you to do a video on is acidic PH levels on a keto diet. I have heard that acidity feeds cancer. I drink the juice of one whole lemon and maybe a tbsp or two of ACV in a large glass of water each morning, but when I test my PH, I am still very acidic. I usually need to take about six sodium bicarbonate tablets just to get into normal range. Coming off the dry fast today, I am very acidic, and don't want to take the sodium tablets just yet. What do you advise to bring PH into normal range, especially for those who are fighting cancer and those who don't want to have an acidic body PH to allow cancer to grow to begin with?

Thanks, Thomas. Could fasting also reduce benign masses? My mother has a mass they say it's not breast cancer but they want to remove it anyway in case it turns down the line. I'm looking for any alternatives if there's any to avoid surgery if there's no other option.

Thank you Thomas. I've had 11 family members who died from treating cancer in the conventional way. When I got it on my leg a few years ago, I used black salve and it's gone. I got off of IF this week and boy am I feeling terrible! Fasting is such an ancient practice and it's exciting to me to see it in being applied in more "mainstream" ways. Thanks you for staying current and informed and handing that info on over to us. I use that radiant C 👌 It's nice to see your wife 👋

@@nimunguronald8286 it’s a salve made from bloodroot and it’s best for anything on the skin. (Not internal conditions)
It forces the immune system to start to work on the area so it’s very hard on the immune system.
CAUTION: you need to be under a doctors care because it’s very strong medicine.
I don’t believe it’s available at all in the U.S.
You can get it in clinics in Mexico. Hoxsey clinic and many others have it.
It can leave a bit divot in your skin if used incorrectly. That’s what happened to me and another person that I know.
      Do your research.
The best thing that helped my many illnesses, was doing the emotional work. I always got good physical results from clearing mental issues. It may sound strange but it isn’t at all. The way we think is the greatest healer that we have.
Get the book “Feelings Buried Alive Never Die” by Karol Truman. Best $ I ever spent.

Will you please do a co-op video with Dr. Rhonda Patrick?

@Sal Bruno I think Thomas is mainly focused on not spiking insulin levels so you are in a fasted state. He has said that strict fasting/time restricted eating would be best done without coffee and would achieve better results. But, he acknowledges how popular coffee is so it's a compromise
