    REALLY HELPFUL! Used this video to perform the very same fix. Good helpful tips, as well. I am really disappointed in this Maytag unit, in 6 years I had a rusted top (around detergent dispenser, rust dripping into clothes), now a seal/bearing failure. I see now that the NEW top is rusting as well (from the inside). Appreciate your video, will keep it going a bit more till I figure out a replacement.

    Pro tip. Don't wait till the bearings completely explode to change them. This project has been a real learning experience. If anyone wants a tip on how to romove the stuck top outer bearing race shoulder that you can't get out, pick up a tungsten carbide cutter for a Dremel and spend 15min inside the tub cutting it. It will slide right out after.

    Great video. Only issue I had was I used the whole tube of grease on the seal, so when it came to putting grease on the inside hub of the basket, I didn’t have any left. Solution was to use another type of silicone grease and hope they are compatible. If not, I’ll have to take it apart, clean everything and reapply grease with a single type of grease, and reassemble. Hoping for the best prepared for the worst. Thanks again.

    i just got through replacing the bearing/seal kit for the second time.although it was just the seal gone this time. i want to compliment you on your instructions. i followed to the t. and i got that up/down play in the tub which i didn't get the last time. though the bearings were still in great shape..lol unlike the first time. it was 3 years old when i replaced the first due to bearings. the replacements (seal made it 4 this time and bearings still good.. what does that say about factory installs?? LMAO once again thanks for the great instructions

    This is a impressive nicely explained professional tutorial.
    There are people using car Jack and 2x4 to left the inner tub out the outer tub.
    People make diy bearing compress tool instead purchase one time use expensive custom tool.
    But yours video explain where and what kind grease need to go where. Best part of it.
    Thank you.
    I was wondering if I can use Marine grease on the rubber seal and on the shaft. What does your red tube Grease do differently than Marine grease?
    Will your red tube grease tolerate hot water temperature without dissolved into cloth washing water?

    • @magicmannst
      @magicmannst 4 года назад +2

      a jack and 2x4 is cheaper than the puller you'd have to buy.these tub's, if they're stuck your not gonna yank em out

      Thanks again! Job's done. Just one tiny detail is if you dont have the tool to press the bearings you have to let a very small gap with the bottom bearing. Then the shaft is easyer to insert thru and its all good when you tighten the nut on the shaft (bottom). Save mabe more than 250$ bucks with this diy job. here in Québec.

    I installed the seal and it doesn't seat all the way. It sticks up about an 1/8 of an inch. Will it be ok like that. I took some measurements and the hole measured ,540 deep to the flange ring on the shaft. Seal measured .580 so should have stuck out about .040. Is the seal trapping air and preventing it to seat? Will it be ok to leave the seal 1/8 high?

  • @mark5862
    @mark5862 2 года назад +1

    I performed this procedure, but my seal would not go all the way flush with the tub, it protrudes about 1/8". Ever seen this? I'm pretty sure it's bottomed out as I tapped it pretty hard, also when I used the bearing tool I torqued it pretty darn hard and the spacer tube between the bearings is tight. Thanks

  • @jonvawter918

    Excellent video.
    You’re the only one to mention that infernal spacer tube. It never wants to align on its own.
    I think there needs to be a conical wooden invention to seat it properly. Often it’s almost impossible to move.
    This is a design flaw in the kit to me,
    because without that spacer being perfectly centered-
    it’s going to bind as you spin.

    Ring on shaft does not seat snuggly against upper bearing (beat on it forever). Only like 2 threads sticking out bottom. Enough to get nut on but threads are not sticking out past washer. Seems like a lot of people are having this same issue. Any solution? Or call it good enough and hope for the best?

    • @jonvawter918
      @jonvawter918 2 года назад

      If it turns well and it doesn’t leak you’ve fixed it. I’ve had a problem not getting the top rubber seal seated deeply enough and gotten a leak

    • @robertv6276
      @robertv6276 2 года назад

      @@jonvawter918 ended up having to press the internal bearings together more and that fixed the issue. Threads then came out further to put the nut on appropriately.

    2 things get some "purple stuff" heavy duty cleaner to soak all that gunk off as you remove them just use caution as there are some caustic fumes. Also I would use more glue on top of the seal and let it cure 24 hours. Thank you for this video.

    Okay, it sorta creeps me out when you use a channel-lock plier on a nut. Also I'm sure those bearings can be pressed into position with a free loaner bearing press kit from Autozone. I had a lot of trouble with this repair. The bearings were stuck on the shaft even though there was only a small amount of rust. Also the seal ripped out a small ring of plastic when I knocked the shaft out.

      tapered up.flat side to bearing.puts less pressure on face of bearing seal. just like in an engine or drivetrain.

      You want the flat surface against the water - facing up.
      otherwise the water will fill the open internal area with the spring

  • @davejoseph5615

    A few other notes -- my tub was not stuck but I needed to use a pulley puller to get that plastic gear off. Also the top of the washer is not self-supporting so you need a wall or something to lean it against or it will fall. Also an impact gun is necessary to remove the rotor hex bolt. Also before you knock out the upper bearing take a close look and see if you can find the drain hole. I think maybe the drain hole is a design flaw and is too small and needs to be drilled or filed larger. Then you also might use something through the drain hole like a string or cord during reassembly to keep that drain hole open.

    When I was hammering the shaft from the bottom it was extremely hard. After too many whacks the shaft finally gave. Problem is that the upper bearing came apart and the outer ring is stuck in the tub. I have tried prying and banging without success. Problem is that the inner diameter of the ring is larger than the access from the bottom of the machine so there is no lip to access. Help please.
