You sir, are a genius. I pulled on the tub for half an hour before finding your video. 20 minutes later and the tub was out! I cut my board to 20.25 inches then angled the corners to follow the contour and was amazed at how well this worked. Thank you for taking the time to record and publish this tutorial.

A little tip using the jack, you can reinstall the bolt in the shaft before putting the jack in to remove, it adds additional space to completely lift the tub off the shaft. Removed over fifty of these and some just need that extra inch to fully release the tub from the shaft

Wish I'd have come across your comment earlier. I just snapped the board in half. I'm assuming it wouldn't push any further due to the shape of the jack and the clearance of the seal around it.

Need to clean and lube the bearings in the tub, there are two , one upper and a lower one, also clean the gunk between them, you can lube the shaft also so it slides on and off easy.@@jaredcasto891

Wow! I will concur you are the man! I'm the mom and I did it with the help of your video and instructions! I went to my Home Depot and got a 2x4 cut 21" and took the jack out of my Pilot, jacked her up, and it worked! I even heard the sound to let me know I'd done it right! My treasures included: 3 socks, 2 pairs of daughter's undies, 1 placemat (I'd looked everywhere for that, well, almost everywhere), 1 washcloth, too much mushy lint stuff to even think about, 2 quarters, 6 paper clips, a push pin, and a rubber band! i also cleaned the pump and pulled some gunk out of it before replacing it. I won't be purchasing another washer constructed this way for sure. I couldn't have done it without you and now the money saved can help with camp! Bless you! :)

Just want to say thank you. Your video helped me out a lot and saved me time and money! With a big family, we can't be out of a washer for no more than a day. I was able to use the car jack from my Honda Pilot. However, I had to stick a shower valve socket beneath the jack because my washer basket just wouldn't come out. It needed that extra 2" to push the basket out. I gave my unit a good cleaning to kill off that foul smell these units give off and also turned the machine over to tighten the rotor bracket (it was loose). Put everything back together and the washer is working better than before. Thanks again!!!!

Very impressive, definitely saved this family of 7 a couple hundred bucks and one big headache. Thankfully we found this video before we attempted to pull the tub out so I was happy to find out that, if need be, I could probably do this myself (with a friend to help with the final move of the tub). Thanks for the great video and ingenuity! This technique worked to get my corroded tub off the shaft. I did want to mention that spaying some PB Blaster on the shaft really helps especially if there is significant corrosion. After hitting it with the PB blaster I tightened the scissor jack and put good pressure on the the tub and let it sit that way for a while (I didn't want to put too much force on the 2/4 and tub rim. Ten minutes later it popped free. I still couldn't get the tub all the way off so I put a socket on top of the shaft and used the jack to remove the tub the rest of the way! I also put some vaseline on the tub sleeve before reinstalling the tub.
The washing machine is working perfectly again!

Thanks for sharing your creative car jack idea to remove the washer tub. After replacing the rotor position sensor, the washer would run but it just didn't sound right. I felt surely there were clothes lodged underneath the tub. I was just about to give up on removing the tub and call for service when I ran across your video. GREAT IDEA!!!! I found 9 pieces of clothing under the tub and a bra that was half eaten by the water pump. Here's a tip for those of you who are in the same boat. I used a bottle type pneumatic jack instead of the scissor type jack. In my opinion, the bottle type jack was easier to manage and control while jacking the tub out. Either jack will work just fine!!! Thanks again for sharing your idea!!!

Pure genius! Worked like a charm! The only problem I had is when the drum got to the top of the shaft, I still wasn't able to pull it out by hand so I re-inserted the bolt in the shaft and put a socket on top of that so I wouldn't mess up the head of the bolt, and that gave me enough extra room to jack it up off the shaft.

Just wanted to let you know how useful this technique is! I needed to remove the tub on my Whirlpool to clean out some smelly gunk underneath. Got all the way down to this step and I panicked & called a repairman. (I couldn't find instructions specific to my model & was afraid of breaking something by forcing the car jack.) The repairman confirmed that I'd done everything right and that there were no other nuts. screws, etc. to remove. But we couldn't get the tub loose! I suggested we try your method & it worked like a charm. And the repairman said he was grateful for having learned a new trick!

As an update to my issue for the situation. I found 2 pairs of socks rolled up like a buritto way down towards the bottom. They were hard to pull out and it's amazing to see such little can stop the operation of the machine. Don't get me wrong I love the machine and does great but at the time it was stressful. I didn't have to pull the entire drum off I could see it but couldn't be reached by my hands so my handy wife with small hands was able to reach down there. Thank you for the video, really helped to visualize my situation. And to all who responded to give me help really saved us lots of money.Thank you.

One other comment: To put the drum back, it tends not to want to go back down the splined shaft easily. I took the 2x4 and placed it vertically against the drum near the spindle edge and gave it some light taps with a sledgehammer. The wood spreads the force and doesn't dent the drum. This reseated the drum enough to get the screw back in.

I had this problem too, so I used some steel wool on the spindle to knock off the worst of the build up then I put some "T plus 2" pipe sealant. It's basically liquid Teflon tape, but it also acts as a lubricant. Plus, if I ever have to remove tub again it will make it easier and might not have to get the car jack out again. With the T plus 2 on there the tub slipped right down with no additional force needed. Highly recommend over risking damaging your tub or yourself

Long comment here, i own an appliance business. Sometimes even with the jack you might need two stacked pieces of wood. You can also put a large socket on the top of the shaft so that you have less work to do with the jack. However, i have read a few comments about how hard it is to put the tub back in. This is the root of the error code. The shaft gets rusty over time and expands, the tub needs to be able to float up when it has water in it and then sink down when the washer drains to engage the tub hub which makes the whole tub spin and not just the wash plate. If the tub is hard to get back in then you havent solved the issue! Here is the fix. Get some sand paper and sand the shaft, you would preferably then spray a very light coating of rustoleum paint and let it dry overnight. Then re sand the shaft until the paint is off, the paint will stay in the divots on the shaft and slow future rusting. Also, turn the tub upside down and gently file the hole, its plastic so be careful, you want to remove dirt only. Then put the tub back in and it should go in easily, if it doesnt you need to sand more. I have literally sold hundreds of these and its the MOST common issue apart from bearings caused by tub seal failure. Just removing any debris wont do anything, you may have some clothes under the tub that is causing the tub to stay elevated. But the most common problem is the rust.

What a great solution. My Kenmore Series 80 did not have enough clearance for the jack AND a 2x4, so cut a piece of iron from an old bed frame. A few turns of the jack and it popped free. EXTREME situation: First, thank you very much for your video and I'm sure it works for 99% of situations. For the other 1% like mine, please allow me to mention what I did. For anyone with an extreme situation like mine. The basket was extremely stuck to the shaft. Even the jack method didn't work. To the point that the 2x4 dented the inner basket from so much pressure. Also, I tried using a puller and almost stripped the plastic holes. I had to take out the basket together with the shaft. Once outside, it took me 2 days, naval jelly, penetrating oil, a small sledge hammer, locking pliers, 1/2" steel rod (about 3ft. long) and a whole lot of patience to get this out without braking the plastic pieces.
    Things to know:
-Hitting the shaft with a regular hammer does not work (you just deform the shaft).
-Remember that inside the inner basket hole there is a plastic sleeve. The sleeve is sandwiched between the wall of the basket hole and the shaft. So the shaft rides on the sleeve, not directly on the basket hole. This means you can rotate the shaft with the sleeves. The sleeves will still be attached to the shaft, but it will rotate in reference to the basket hole walls. If you can get the shaft/sleeve to rotate, the penetrating oil/naval jelly will be allowed in and dissolve at least part of the corrosion inside the hole/channel.
-This sleeve is not a single piece. If you could see this basket hole from the side, it would be a channel of about 3 inches in length. A 1in. half sleeve goes from top to bottom, another 1in. half sleeve goes from bottom to top, and there's a 1inch gap in between. This is important to know because that's where the corrosion is.
    So, how?
I turned the basket upside down and put a lot of navy jelly on the corroded area of the shaft (where the shaft and the tub meet) and let it work for 24 hrs. Next day, I cleaned it. Afterwards, I tried hitting with a regular hammer from both sides and that didn't work.
Desperate moves: Rotated the shaft. Basket sideways on the grass to create friction. Another person holding the basket (grab on to the plastic areas, not the metal). Got the locking pliers and grabbed on to the shaft at the bottom of the basket spline grooves matching the teeth of the pliers. The pliers became a lever to rotate the shaft. I didn't want to hit the pliers directly, so I got a 2x4 and put it on top of the plier handles, then hit the 2x4 with a sledge hammer with a quick jerking motion. The shaft began to rotate. Kept hitting the 2x4 to rotate the pliers/shaft. I would clean and then turn the tub upside down put more naval jelly, let sit, hit and turn again etc. To the point where I could rotate it without having to hit the pliers. I thought of using a big pipe to fit the plier handles inside of the diameter of the pipe and hitting the pipe. I guess that might work too.
Set the basket sideways again on the grass to create friction, took the sledge hammer and hit the shaft hard from the outside toward the inside of the basket (I know this was the wrong way, but I didn't have a small enough hammer to fit it inside the tub to hit from the inside out). The shaft moved about a quarter inch. I turned the basket upside down, cleaned the corroded area again and saturated it again with naval jelly and let it work for about 1 hr. Turned the basket upright, I could see the shaft was no longer flushed with the surface. It was now protruding. I saturated that with naval jelly. Let it work for 1hr. Turned the tub upside down, cleaned and put more naval jelly on the shaft. I took the pliers and turned again, working the jelly into the hole etc. I could not hear any grinding anymore and the jelly was becoming brown instead of pink.
Final hit: set the tub upright on the steps to my back yard. I had to use some 2x4s to increase the height of the step so that when I hit the shaft from the top down, there would be enough space for the shaft to move down without hitting the concrete. Used a long 1/2" steel rod I had and used the sledge hammer to hit that shaft until it was out. The sleeves are meant to stay in the hole.
In the gap between the plastic sleeves, was a ton of rust powder. I checked the shaft and the diameter of the shaft was significantly thinner in exactly that same area. This was an extreme situation, I don’t figure it happens a lot, but I do hope this is of help to anyone in a similar situation to mine.

  • @riloh5388

Was able to repair my machine after it gave an OL error thanks to this video. The tub was really stuck on there; my 2x4 actually snapped from the jack pressure. But when I looked down in the tub, I could see the spindle was almost clear of the hole. The divot on the bottom of the jack caused an issue, but putting a block of wood under the jack too finally popped the tub loose. Took some cleaning wipes to the tub hole and to the spindle and then hit them both with sandpaper, cleaned all interior surfaces, and everything worked perfectly after reassembly. Thanks for making it easy.

Absolutely spot on process! Took jack from my wife's car and a 2X4 and it worked fine. One note, my basket was very hard to remove. Near the end, the base of the jack had bottomed out on the bottom on the basket, yet the basket still would not lift off. To get more "travel", I used a 13/16 deep 1/2 drive socket to fit over the shaft. This gave me two more inches of jack travel, enough to lift the basket clean off the shaft.

To be fair, topload HE units are junk, and its not as if GE, Samsung, LG, or anyone else doesn't have these kinds of problems. Requiring government-mandated water/electric savings has destroyed what once were reliable topload units. Taking a tub out of an old unit isn't a walk in the park... both Cabrios and old Whirlpools can be difficult taking tubs out. However, the failure rate on newer HE machines regarding needing the tub pulled seem to be 2-3x as high as older units.
