First one lasted years, second one lasted maybe 6-8 months and our last one lasted 2 months. I gave up today and bought another used washer today. The bearings are not fun to replace and always take at least a day with letting the sealant dry

The key is the nut torque - with the blue Loctite on it you really just need to barely snug it up; too much torque and you are damaging the bearings.

Definitely made it look easy peezey. But my washer had other ideas. So much brutal beating was required to get the spline shaft out & then the new one to seat. All were genuine parts too, no amazon specials. I could not use wood & tap the new into place. I had to get a 2.5 foot long 2x4 & a 3lb hammer. Granted I'm a female, but I hit the dang thing so hard & so much I had shards of wood splintering off the 2x4 & the top of the shift left impressions in the end of the wood. I work on cars, so I'm no slouch. I got it thru & had a thread & a half left after the nut was on... whew.

Success! Great video! Before you start expect to spend the majority of your time disassembling then cleaning your washer parts as well as underneath your washer. My actual repair took only about 1hr. Cleaning took seemingly FOREVER!
To start, you will need a standard socket set. A large and very small phillips screwdriver. 2 Large crescent or other adjustable wrenches. Tape and lanyard or rope. Putty knife, Heavy Hammer, block of wood, and a flashlight along with plenty of rags and paper towels. I think that's about it other than your replacement kit and bearing tool. Most appliance parts supply stores will rent you a bearing tool for around $10 if you don't want to pay for one. And if your bearings are as bad as mine were, you will also need some penetrating oil (WD40) and possibly a large vise grip pliers to loosen the nut on the bottom of the tub.
One additional tip. If you are fully replacing your bearings and shaft, and are NOT able to get your tub out and don't have a jack, you can hammer the shaft from the bottom side until the tub and shaft come out together. You can then hammer the shaft out of the tub from the top.
Good luck! Don't buy the cheap parts off Amazon. Mine came with bearings that were too small for the top and too large for the bottom even though it stated it was for my model.

Bought an after market kit and followed this video to the letter. As a do it yourselfer, this video is without a doubt one of the most complete and comprehensive I've ever watched. my removal/installation did not go without it own problems. During the bearing installation process I inadvertently let the spacer tube get cocked and ended up deforming it and the washer. I had to use the originals. In addition, during a test run after completion I had a loud banging noise during the agitate cycle. To make a long story a bit shorter, I found that the replacement shaft was approx. .025 smaller in its overall diameter and root diameter. This has allowed slop (backlash) between the shaft's upper and lower splines and the wash plate as was well as the rotor. Just to make things worse, the bearings that came with the kit suck. They are very noisy. Just bought a much better grade of bearings and will replace in the future. I think I could have reused the bearings as they were just fine. BTW, the reason for the rebuild was that the inside basket hub had stripped out and it took out the metal shaft as well. All in, it would have probably been better to just pay the bigger bucks for a factory kit. Learn something new everyday, whether you want to or not!

I think I'm currently having the same problem as you. So, after you used the bearing kit to tighten them into place, when you tried putting the drove shaft the holes didn't line up? Because that is what mine is doing, and I'm figuring I may have to buy a new kit, because I threw all my older parts away.

    • @josephburrichter2021

Nah, shaft aligned with bearings once everything was installed correctly. My primary issues related to after market shaft dimensions and lack of quality bearings. BTW, I was never able to get the upper bearing back out because I had done to good of a job of gluing in the seal. still sitting on the new high quality bearings. @@michaeldaniels2278

I just finished installing the bearing kit in my washer. My washer didn't have an agitator but the install process is still the same. I am just a weekend handyman around the house but the video helped prepare me to have the right tools available and the instructions I needed. I would strongly suggest to have the 22 1/2 inch 2X4 and jack available. This will save you time as my tub didn't come off easily and I had to use the jack and 2X4. The job, minus the time I needed to go to HomeDepot for a 2X4, was about three hours. Washer worked perfectly, saved me $1,000 dollars for a new washer. Thanks for the video!

EXTREME situation: First, thank you very much for your video it was of enormous help. For anyone with an extreme situation like mine. The basket was extremely stuck to the shaft. Even the jack method didn't work. To the point that the 2x4 dented the inner basket from so much pressure. Also, I tried using a puller and almost stripped the plastic holes. I had to take out the basket together with the shaft. Once outside, it took me 2 days, naval jelly, penetrating oil, a small sledge hammer, locking pliers, 1/2" steel rod (about 3ft. long) and a whole lot of patience to get this out without braking the plastic pieces.
    Things to know:
-I'm a DIYer, not a pro. What I wrote is not to be considered professional advice. So, read on and decide what to do on your own. I'm trying to help by telling you what I did. You decide if it's something you want to do or not.
-Hitting the shaft with a regular hammer does not work (you just deform the shaft).
-Remember that inside the inner basket hole there is a plastic sleeve. The sleeve is sandwiched between the wall of the basket hole and the shaft. So the shaft rides on the sleeve, not directly on the basket hole. This means you can rotate the shaft with the sleeves. The sleeves will still be attached to the shaft, but it will rotate in reference to the basket hole walls. If you can get the shaft/sleeve to rotate, the penetrating oil/naval jelly will be allowed in and dissolve at least part of the corrosion inside the hole/channel.
-This sleeve is not a single piece. If you could see this basket hole from the side, it would be a channel of about 3 inches in length. A 1in. half sleeve goes from top to bottom, another 1in. half sleeve goes from bottom to top, and there's a 1inch gap in between. This is important to know because that's where the corrosion is.
    So, how?
I turned the basket upside down and put a lot of navy jelly on the corroded area of the shaft (where the shaft and the tub meet) and let it work for 24 hrs. Next day, I cleaned it. Afterwards, I tried hitting with a regular hammer from both sides and that didn't work.
Desperate moves: Rotated the shaft. Basket sideways on the grass to create friction. Another person holding the basket (grab on to the plastic areas, not the metal). Got the locking pliers and grabbed on to the shaft at the bottom of the basket spline grooves matching the teeth of the pliers. The pliers became a lever to rotate the shaft. I didn't want to hit the pliers directly, so I got a 2x4 and put it on top of the plier handles, then hit the 2x4 with a sledge hammer with a quick jerking motion. The shaft began to rotate. Kept hitting the 2x4 to rotate the pliers/shaft. I would clean and then turn the tub upside down put more naval jelly, let sit, hit and turn again etc. To the point where I could rotate it without having to hit the pliers. I thought of using a big pipe to fit the plier handles inside of the diameter of the pipe and hitting the pipe. I guess that might work too.
Set the basket sideways again on the grass to create friction, took the sledge hammer and hit the shaft hard from the outside toward the inside of the basket (I know this was the wrong way, but I didn't have a small enough hammer to fit it inside the tub to hit from the inside out). The shaft moved about a quarter inch. I turned the basket upside down, cleaned the corroded area again and saturated it again with naval jelly and let it work for about 1 hr. Turned the basket upright, I could see the shaft was no longer flushed with the surface. It was now protruding. I saturated that with naval jelly. Let it work for 1hr. Turned the tub upside down, cleaned and put more naval jelly on the shaft. I took the pliers and turned again, working the jelly into the hole etc. I could not hear any grinding anymore and the jelly was becoming brown instead of pink.
Final hit: set the tub upright on the steps to my back yard. I had to use some 2x4s to increase the height of the step so that when I hit the shaft from the top down, there would be enough space for the shaft to move down without hitting the concrete. Used a long 1/2" steel rod I had and used the sledge hammer to hit that shaft until it was out. The sleeves are meant to stay in the hole.
In the gap between the plastic sleeves, was a ton of rust powder. I checked the shaft and the diameter of the shaft was significantly thinner in exactly that same area. This was an extreme situation, I don’t figure it happens a lot, but I do hope this is of help to anyone in a similar situation to mine.

Great video, I had done this repair once before several years ago. I watched this for a refresher. One major warning you didn’t mention and hopefully others will see here…At 13:00 you’re driving the old shaft out with the the machine on is back. That shaft will pop out and fall to the bottom of the tub which is actually the side. It can easily crack the tub!
You should warn people to protect it using a towel, pillow rug ect. I learned this the hard way.
      Otherwise very good.

Great video! I am a fairly experienced diy-er, but I really struggled with this repair. Turns out that the bearing press tool (OCTOPUS 131970 off Amazon) I bought did not fit the upper bearing properly. Thus, I struggled to properly seat the upper bearing. The part of the upper bearing press tool that is supposed to fit in the upper bearing inner race bore was too large and would not seat the bearing correctly. After several attempts I was able to reverse the upper bearing press component and use the flat side to seat the upper bearing. Hopefully my struggles/experience might save someone else some frustration. Also, this video makes the repair appear much easier than it actually is. They use a washer that is pre-staged and perfectly set up for the video shoot. As usual, the real world brings real issues and is often more challenging. The video is a great step by step resource which gave me the confidence to tackle this somewhat complicated repair. A challenging job and a most helpful video. As info., I was working on a Maytag model MVWB400VQ0 Washer, which is NOT compatible with the OCTOPUS 131970 Bearing Tool Kit on Amazon.

Awesome video. Thank you for posting and for the great step by step detail. I ordered the bearing kit and the bearing alignment tool and did this job over two days (1 day to make sure the adhesive was cured). I was quoted about $475+ to do the job but did it myself for $140. If you are a bit handy and not afraid to try things, I highly recommend doing it yourself. The hardest part for me was getting the old shaft out (just needed to hit harder).

This was a very thorough video. I'm happy that I followed this one versus others. The only problem I had was getting the tub off the shaft. Even the jack method did not work. I ended up disconnecting every from the bottom and taking the tub and shaft out together. I was then able to pound shaft out with a hammer. This saved me alot of money doing this repair myself. My local repair company told me I was better off buying a new wash machine versus having them fix it.

Almost perfect for my Cabrio! Thanks, you walked me through the whole process with only one issue. I couldn't get the tub to lift out no matter how hard we tried, over and over. Took the bottom nut off of the shaft and had to pull it out with the tub, which also pulled out the seal. It turns out the shaft was stuck in the tub because rust had built up on the shaft in the 1 1/2" gap there is between the top and bottom tub bushings. Lots of penetrating oil, turning, pushing and pulling and we finally got the shaft out. Probably spent more time cleaning pieces than changing the bearings. Figuring out the diagnostic instructions and the procedure to just run the motor turned out to be futile. Thanks again!!!

This is gold! This how-to was so detail oriented and thorough even a pleb like me was able to complete the shaft and bearing replacement. I’m just waiting for the glue to fully cure to perform a diagnostic test run. One thing I did notice was the strator had hair-line cracks in four different places just like shown in the video- I went ahead and super glued the seams together so hopefully it won’t be an issue. Another thing I noticed was the strator’s copper wires and rotor had what appeared to be brake like dust. I tried my best to wipe off what I can with cotton ball and alcohol. Crossing my fingers everything works out, I don’t want a ‘new/modern’ planned obsolescence machine 😅

Matt, just fantastic. I could not have removed and installed the bearings and shaft without watching and stopping the video as I completed the steps. The part arrived in two days and went in just as your video showed. The plate that is on the back of the coil assembly had fallen off when I stored the assembly and didn't see it when reassembling and found it in the bucket when all done. Watching you video several times over a certain spot I saw the metal plate on the rear of the assembly as you were handling it. Once again with out the video it would have been hit and miss trying to get it back together. There is a slight scraping sound on one spot as it spins and comes around. From reading other reviews it should be completely silent. It no longer sounds like a 747 taking off and no leaks. Once again Matt, thanks you again. Easy to follow your steps. 5 Stars + for your review. .

My washer doesn’t have an agitator. Just a few less parts to remove, no difference otherwise.
Every time you used a hammer to tap, I had to use a 10 lb. Sledge. A lot of gunk came out with my bearings. To get the drive shaft out, I had to lay the washer down all the way & swing it like a golf club. Was expecting something to break but it worked 😂.

Great, in-depth video. This helped me quite a bit with my Cabrio Platinum washer repair. One main difference though - there are no clips to push back in the front of the washer to pop the top off. You have to remove a couple screws in the back on the top of the green colored plates. The top then slides forwards and then can be lifted up.

best video on youtube for this repair. this is my second time doing this repair to our Cabrio. I didn't use the press tool. I used old bearings that i had and tapped the new bearing in using the old bearing as a guide. You could use an axle socket as well to tap the bearing in. First time i did the job i didn't have any problem removing the tub, but this time, had to get the scissor jack from the tub and cut a 20" piece of 2 x 4. It was on there good. I just bought the bearings and seal, but next time will get the shaft as it was getting worn out. The way these Cabrios go, it will probably last 3 years and then have to do it all again anyways.

Love your video. It made the job a lot simpler and quicker. I saw a different video at first and it almost made me go and buy a new washer. The guy had his washer tore all the way down to the last bolt. He had parts spread all over the floor. Luckily, I kept looking and ran across you guys. The tool is worth buying. I could have made my own but I would have spent more money in time running around gathering materials and building the parts. I did notice one thing that I kind of questioned. The direction of the seal in by my experience is backwards. If the seal is meant to hold the water in the tub, then the spring should face the tub. I checked the original seal on my washer and it was installed upside down(same as video). After some thought I realized that if the seal were to be installed spring up, it would probably rust out fairly quickly. Then the seal would lose it's integrity and fail. The seal being installed upside down is probably why there is a lot of seepage, however it must be a necessary compromise. I guess that is the reason for all of the sealant that is used.

Excellent step by step video. Thanks! And the bearings/spacer/shim can be installed without the tools. But the tool will make lifer easier. A note for people with older washers. They did not use clips for the top lid. You have to remove to 1/4" head screws from the tabs on the rear of the machine. The lid can then be slid forward and lifted.

Thank you for the video, yours is probably the best out of all the whirlpool/Kenmore HE repair videos. unfortunately I couldn’t afford to do it exactly like you recommended, I made my own bearing install tool for about $10 by using 12” piece of 5/8” thread all and some scrap metal I had laying around and I just replaced the bearings and seal then cleaned up and reused the rest of the original hard parts but it works fine now and I was able to do the whole job for about $35 so thank you, your video was a life saver….

Thanks Matt for this video. I did it myself. It works now, completely silent!!!! The shaft collar is hard to install straight, so be careful. Took me three tries to get it to set it in straight. Also, the bottom bearing broke apart while tying to get it out. I had to spray penetrating oil on it (called Blaster) and knocked out the rest of it in a couple of minutes no problem. Also, I took those screws out of the filter that was mentioned at the end of this video. Under it was mold. I cleaned i with bleach and put it back in.

I have a Cabrio platinum washer, and these instructions were great. A couple of things from my model...it doesn't have the release clips for raising the top. You have to remove the brackets from the back of the washer and slide it forward a bit to release it. You also need to remove multiple connections from the head unit and completely remove the top...there are no hinges.
The jack and 2x4 trick was also a game changer, but my tub was stuck so bad that even when I had raised the tub to the top of the spindle it still wouldn't let loose. What I ended up doing was cutting some 1x1 blocks that could sit on top of the spindle and give the jack a little more clearance. I ended up finally popping the tub loose on the 3rd block.
Other than those 2 things, it went exactly as described in the video. It probably took me ~3 hours in total, but a lot of that time was spent figuring out the lid and lifting the tub. If I had to repair my washer again, I could do it in under an hour.

Great video in that it shows every step. You do gloss over the fact that a person of average strength is not going to be able to break an old shaft free with the machine merely tilted. It needs to be all the way on its side or back to get a good swing on the sledgehammer. Also the basket on my model was still stuck to the shaft after I pressed it down to the surface with the scissors jack; I had to put a rod under the jack to finish the job. I have a working washer now, THANK YOU!

I did my Kenmore/whirlpool about 5 times and the best I ever got was about a year and a half before the seal let go far enough to rust the bearings again. If I used the OEM bearing kit they tended to last longer.
I finally got tired of it and bought a LG top end top loading impeller HE machine. The bearings and seal setup is self contained so you just drop the unit in and don't have to try and seat the bearings and seal with a special tool. We'll see with time how well it holds up and lasts but I got a 4 year warranty through Costco so don't have to worry about it for a while.
I really liked the whirlpool but tearing it down every year or so was getting really old and I do have all the tools to do it.

This is an excellent and much appreciated video. My only piece of advice is that when you pull the bearings together with the special tool, make sure that you get it good and tight or the top bearing may not be fully seated and then the rubber washer that goes on top of it won't sit down all the way (took me twice before I figured that one out). In the video, look for the number of exposed threads before tightening the bar down with the lock nut (if only one or two threads show, it's not tight enough). Again, great video.

Great video. Just finished my install. Mine took about a half hour or more longer than expected because my top bearing had completely gone out and when trying to knock it out the bearing shattered leaving the outer race stuck in the tub. Took a small crowbar that would fit down and in behind the race and while my wife held the crowbar from the top I used the removal bar and smacked it. We alternated back and forth 180 degrees and in a half dozen strikes the race was out. Waiting for the adhesive to dry tonight and will see how it goes tomorrow!

My tub was so rusted on I did the jack and 2x4 trick. It elevated it but the tub lifted to the bottom of the jack and I still couldn't break it free. I slide a bigger socket over top of the shaft to give me another inch of workable lifting height. Worked. Had me worried for a couple minutes trying to figure it out and devise a plan. =]

Thanks for video, SUPER informative, one of the best of the hundred I have watched on this project. Am I the only person who LOVES that hair/stash combo???? Definitely got a little crazy in it. So for the inner tub removal, I used my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee scissor jack but when I used wood to lift it up, the darn thing was so rusted together that it almost broke the wood. I had to get a hard metal rod from my workout bench and even that bent the metal but I finally got it out, what a nightmare! UPDATE - This video is recommended by many Amazon sellers who sell the complete bearing repair kit so it has to be good. I completed the project as well using this video. Recommendation to APP, I would lower the price of your kit, it's so much more than decent ones you can get online.

Definitely a great video. Thank you. Other videos but yours was detailed with the use of tools. The one thing is there isn’t any clips in front. You have to take the bolts off the back green tabs. Second, I couldn’t get my shaft out. I used a sledge hammer. Finally I heated it up with a torch little by little and came out slowly but surely. I have yet to try it but after 3.5 hours letting it dry. I am going to try tonight. Thanks

This is an excellent video. Thank you. In my case, I could not get the top and bottom bearings to seat properly simultaneously. The top bearing would not go all the way down. For anyone trying to save a little money (which I assume you are since you're fixing your own machine), you can make do without the extra tools mentioned here.
Lanyard, paracord, spare extension cord, old pantyhose, whatever.
I purchased a 6-in 1/2" hex bolt and some washers from Home Depot -- if you aren't wildly crooked on the bearings, the tool doesn't need to be perfectly centered in the hole to make them centered. They will naturally align when forced together. I had someone on top holding the nut while I tightened the bolt, and it snugged up both bearings perfectly.
I used another spare bolt I had for the "bearing removal tool". This one specifically had a mostly smooth shaft, which is more ideal, but either way will work fine.
And if you have some 2" PVC laying around... You guessed it, that's all that tool is.
Lastly, my kit came with some generic super glue -- Don't use it. For $4, I bought a tube of E600 for security and peace of mind. It explicitly states that it is washer/dryer safe and when fully cured can handle high temperatures, so you won't be leaking.

@@appliancepartspros WTW6400SW1. Also there are 4-5 crack lines on the stator and some seems like they are sealed with super glue. Very surprise when seeing this as the washer was bought brand new from Best Buy. I sealed the remaining cracks with super glue. When trying to test run with Rinse/Spin, it stuck at 3 min mark and if leave it there for a while, there's a burn smell. So, I turned it off and unplugged the power. Not sure if the stator also went bad as well.
