This sport is used in the training of the Self-Defense Forces. You may have seen it a lot in old Japan, but being a 19 year old Japanese, I've never actually done it or even seen it!
They also do this at 防衛大学校and 陸上自衛隊高等学校。Both of which are self defense school where one id equivalent to West point academy and another is called a self defense high school
It kinda like the sport in an UK town where they fight for a ball.
Japan: bows to strangers on the street
Also japan; kicks you in the face for going near the big stick
I was looking for that comment, thanks
A gentleman in the street and a thug in the field
I definitely love how they can be so aggressive with each other, but the moment that whistle is blown, they help everyone up, regardless of team. Just shows true sportsmanship and the respect they have for each other even while being so aggressive.
Y’all know there’s only like five guys actually playing

Americans would destroy Japanese at this game
To appeal to American audiences they’ll need to put a bikini clad hottie on top of the pole. So typically Japanese to put just another goof in the only position that gets the spotlight. Actually, make it a bikini clad “celebrity” hottie. There’d be so many willing to do it to augment their IG careers. I can definitely see a Kardashian on top of the pole.

A half century ago, bo-taoshi was a popular event for sports festivals in high schools all over Japan. But it is too dangerous for average students therefore almost all schools have banned this type of sports nowadays. Only National Defense Academy of Japan conducts a bo-taoshi event every year because the sport trains military students.

Canadian schools:
Alright, children, we will be playing football but only with belt flags because tackling is dangerous.
Japanese schools:
FYI it’s National Defense Academy, so it’s a bit from normal schools / colleges
Rob that’s a pretty good sign you should homeschool. If that’s what they teach them about playing, imagine what other nonsense they are teaching them.
Some of them literally jumped head first to that crowd kicking
Rob I’m pretty young, so I went through this stuff. In the beggining of my second grade, we were allowed to play dodgeball but we weren’t allowed to say dodge ball “because the name was aggressive. By the end of my 6th grade, we weren’t allowed to play tag “because it’s a contact game.” I think the way to solve it is to make sure your child gets the rough and tumble experience he needs to grow up strong, outside of school. Just my two sense

We already do, it’s called Black Friday
That's a lot of money for the hospitals
I think that when you play this in Japan, a lot of people are hospitalized. Did you notice all the players just flopped on the ground not moving?
Keith Klassen now imagine that scenario, but instead of a skinny Japanese man falling on their head, it’s a 300lb linebacker.
@@keithklassen5320 I am not seeing what your are seeing though quite a few are wrestling on the ground
During the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese sailors who fought against the Baltic Fleet filled lifeboats with hot water to bathe and cleanse themselves. They then donned fresh new uniforms before going into battle. It is said that this was based on advice from military doctors, who believed that if one was clean, the chances of survival would be slightly higher if shrapnel entered the body. When Japanese people commit seppuku (ritual suicide), they also wear new clothes. In contrast, the Russian soldiers thought they were going to war and reportedly wore their oldest and dirtiest clothes. Seeing their pristine white shirts reminded me of this.

They are students of the National Defense Academy, and after graduation, most of them become officers in the Self-Defense Forces. Japan has three branches of the Self-Defense Forces: Ground, Maritime, and Air. At the National Defense Academy, students from all three branches study together to foster a sense of unity. This approach also reflects Japan's reflection on the pre-war period when the coordination between the Japanese Army and Navy was not smooth. That said, this competition is held during sports festivals in junior high and high schools in Japan. Although it seems to be decreasing in recent times, I have experienced it. I believe that sometimes it's important to unleash the competitive spirit of the youth.
if this sport was in the USA brawls would break out lmfao
Eric Rivera this sport IS a brawl
It’s weird the Japanese crowds are always so polite. If you go back and look at Japanese Pride fights which were basically ufc fights with less rules people would get absolutely brutalized and the japanese crowd would just give polite golf claps
Gunfire, stabbings, stompings
I'd say in America there'd be a commercial break every 20 seconds and it would all be about looking cool😂
