- Goa, India’s smallest state has played an important part in shaping the history of India. It has its unique culture and heritage and a lot of this comes from the original settlers, the tribes of Goa. Goa has four main tribal communities the Gawada, Kunbi, Velip, and Dhangar. The Dhangar in Goa are recognized as shepherds who are similar to the Maratha shepherds of the Konkan region.
The film highlights issues of tribal land rights, cultural transmission, agrarian crisis and rights of forest-dwelling communities to land and other resources denied to them over decades as a result of the continuance of colonial forest laws in India.
All COVID precautions were taken while filming this episode and no one has showed any symptoms in the days following this trip.

I just loved the way this man speaks. Not Marathi..not Konkani... a different language in its own right. The selfless thought process of ensuring that his cattle are fed properly even if he has to go without food is just next level.
Yes the language he speaks is Dhangari language.. It's completely different from Marathi and Konkani.. it has own dialect...
If the Dhangar has his goats than its not so easy for him to survive now...

Really Nice Film. Good Work Kabir & Joshua. Coming from a tribal dominated state Jharkhand , It is the first time I watched a film on a tribal community of Goa. It gives me deep insight about the life of the Dhangar community , their relationship with nature and cattle, their customs and rituals and also the challenges the community faces in the modern economy. Eagerly awaiting more films on the tribal communities of Goa.

Awesome film! As someone who's and ecologist, who works closely with humans and wildlife, and landscapes, I would just say one thing, that referring pastoral lands as wastelands is very harmful from a psychological point. Refer to them as grasslands and scrublands will be appropriate!

we must get the next generation out of subsistence agriculture programs-they need education, quality skills and gainful employment, entrepreneurial opportunities, to grow and prosper, enjoy modern life, and then make choices to live dhangar life or alternative.
The Dhangars in Canacona are from Sawantwadi, Maharastra. They settled in Canacona just a few years after Goa's liberation. Once in the year, they visit their native place in Sawantwadi.
