Wounded Hills: A documentary on the environmental issues of the Western Ghats

  • Rains are not new to Kerala. The monsoons are the elixir of life to this southern State of India. But in the past two years, things have changed. Landslides in the Western Ghats have swept away land and lives at an unprecedented scale. What is it in the hills that has triggered this disaster?
Much effort from eminent environmentalists and scientists have gone into understanding the issue. In broad terms, the understanding is that human intervention has upset the delicate balance among the various forces of nature in this ecological hotspot. Reports that detail the toll of human activity in the hills, such as the one from the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel led by Madhav Gadgill, have been the focal points of much deliberation and allegedly, little action. Amid the push and pull among governments and those tasked with action, it is the people that depend on them that bear the brunt of nature.
In this documentary from The Hindu, we visit the wounded hills and people of the Western Ghats. We also talk to the experts and environmentalists who point us towards root causes and coming disasters.

This documentary has taken four years back. The same thing has happened two weeks before. Greedy manush didn't care about the nature mother. Those who do that kind of abuse to the mother nature they never get affected. Only those poor people and the labourers are getting affected.it's a nice documentary. Thank you The Hindu. ❤

I'm from Idukki and I can say the day time temperature are getting extremely high and nights are getting extremely cold. The tree cover is decreasing day by day.
We used to have paddy fields now the land is just barren, several landslides have occurred near to our ancestral house all because of the loss of tree cover and soil mining..!

Thank you The Hindu team, this documentary lighten the environmental ignorance in many minds, and initiate a process among people to team up against unsustainable environmental policies.
The present governments are acting like colonial powers. For Colonial governments the only focus is the profits for their mother country at the cost of colonies. Similarly present governments are treating the Forests as their colonies.
Making poor environmental and unsustainable policies is not less than the British rule.
The freedom struggle against the deforestation has begun, and this triggering incident is not less than 1857 sepoy mutiny, but now the sepoy is the mighty Wester ghat.
More than politicians it's the people who get effected by Nature's fury.
