Congo, Thrill of the River | Deadliest Journeys

- On the legendary Congo River, Commander Aimé is at the helm of a gigantic wooden raft the size of a football field. With his men, he is trying to transport 220 tree trunks linked together by cables from Kisangani to Kinshasa. The raft is also the cheapest means of transport for the most deprived who wish to reach the capital. On board, danger is daily, injuries, sandbanks and storms do not spare the men. For those who take the trails along the river, the conditions are not better. Without public transportation, travelers have no choice but to board freight trucks for an epic journey.

same here man! i have been humbled, i didnt realize how rich i am, even though i dont have alot of money. My basic needs are met daily just by me going to a job that im going to stop bitchin about. These folk have jobs that dont provide for their basic needs. Basic needs are food water and shelter. luxuries are plumbing, electricity. Imagine how these folks lives would be different if they went to work for 8 hrs or 12 a day with 2 days off a week and all of their basic needs with some luxuries met on a daily.

they have to pay thousands in bribes to do so. congo is infamous police state that prohibits filming and travel (by white people) unless they pay for permits, escorts and protection at every step. it has been very well documented as recent as 2 years ago (nothing has changed basically). so this film crew was handing out money every minute behind the camera to everybody. the more you know. congo is a literal shithole

With the riches of Africa, no person from Africa should have to suffer. Same with other countries, but fee countries have what Africa has. There's no reason for poverty but greed! For Black Africans countries who have a tremendous amount of natural resources the the West will pay a King's ransom for, but still most of these countries seems to regress or stay the same , great Documentary, sad to see but a good job showing the world this video!
They have corrupt, self-serving dictators
The problem is those less educated and corrupt politicians with Middle-Ages mentality who control the governments in many countries in Africa ; some don’t even know how the government works and most can’t think beyond the next day. Another problem is the bad education system in the continent which doesn’t produce problem-solvers and innovators. Children are being taught useless things they will never put to use in real life . In my school, I was taught internal organs of insects, like grasshopper, history of British Royal family, flags of all countries in the world and what each country is known for and score of other useless things.
If the politicians are highly educated and enlightened and the education system is transformed like that of China, Japan or South Korea , Africa will be in a better position in a few years considering all the resources it has.
Son las mismas personas inteligentes de África las que tienen que tomar consciencia de sus gobiernos y políticos, y hacer algo. Porque claramente la gran mayoría de los negros siguen sin reaccionar ni despabilarse en pleno siglo XXI.
But why are you talking about the west or North American? It’s nothing to do why is so simple. Why are you bringing the problems or Africans to the west or North Americans not like that problem they have made the raft easy if they would have the time and prepare for the journey.

Living ? No ...they're surviving. There's a huge difference.
This fabulous well made documentary was amazing to see for me. The reason being that I had travelled the entire length of three continents from the top of North America to the bottom of South America and by sea to travel all of Europe. This was a three year journey from 1988 to 1990. The intention was to travel across Africa and to take my 1969 VW campervan on a barge up the Congo River to South Africa and back north again along the Nile River to Cairo. I was only one day's drive from reaching Africa when disaster happened. My VW campervan was stolen in Seville Spain which of course put an end to the dream of crossing Africa but judging from this doco I somehow think that my VW van would not have made it onto a Congolese barge or driving on those muddy roads of Africa even though I did experience all that while I was crossing the jungles of Brazil and I did manage to get my VW on a barge down the Amazon River.
Thank you for this wonderful documentary which I watch thirty years later after my original journey.

I just checked Google and know that " U.S. relations with the D.R.C. are strong". I imagine if the local and federal government of Congo makes an appeal and requests to the US Government to help in this field these people of Congo "will not" have to travel dangerously like this. The American people, in general, are quite generous and will build large wooden-motored boats with safety and comfort for them. They, the American people, will establish many sawmills and construct lumber storage facilities throughout the country to serve this purpose. I would like to urge the Congo government to make such an appeal and request the US to help the people. Good relations with the US mean good prosperity and a better living condition.
Unfortunately, Congo's problems are political. One man was out to better their lives (Lumumba Patrice), but he was eliminated through orders from the West, butchered like an animal. If only the width of a six-lane highway could be excised through the Congo Forest from Kisangani to Kinshasa, the sale of its wood and timber, could be enough to pay for the construction a highway and railway line of that length hence putting an end to such suffering. But would they do that? An enlightened and mobile Congolese population is a big threat.
@@jereking254 To my mind, in a poor country like Congo whose population lives in a daily struggle honest and uncorrupt leadership is a must. By and large, however, corruption is inevitable in many poor countries and plays a big role in the great suffering of powerless people. The rich natural resources that Congo possesses can easily alleviate the livelihood of its people only if the leadership there puts politics aside and thinks about ways to improve people's lives. It can be done. I'm mystified by the story you wrote. Why would the West want to do away with a man who sought a better life? There must be some hidden details in the cause of his demise I believe.
The US won't be able to make a difference my man ---- monies sent there to develop will only be stolen by the so-called rubbish we call politicians --- at any rate they have enough resources to develop and to make progress ---- but STEALING is the order of the day --- in fact all over Africa. Some programs highlights the "high" life of "presidents" and their "wealth" ----- to the dismay of the utterly poor and destitute --- all because of their greed. There "leaders" are nothing but common thiefs ---- instead of being a servant to the people they are stealers from the people
