- Billions of people in cities around the world are affected by climate change. Sustainable urban planning can help reduce risks and improve life in urban centers.
Thai landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraarkhom demonstrates how this can be achieved. Her home city of Bangkok is suffering greatly from climate change. For years, the metropolitan region with around 15 million inhabitants has been threatened by heavy rainfall and flooding.
The risk of more flooding is constantly increasing: The megacity, located just above sea level, is sinking every year. To counteract this, Kotchakorn Voraarkhom is focusing on sustainable architecture and trying to bring nature back into the concrete jungle. Her approach is groundbreaking and has set an example for other regions.
Georg Hofer, a pioneer of natural building materials, hails from Lower Bavaria. In times of climate change, he has turned to a centuries-old building material: clay. The list of clay‘s positive properties is long. Clay requires little energy to produce, produces hardly any CO2 and is free of pollutants. Used as a building material, clay can also regulate the temperature. In extreme heat, clay houses stay cool, while in winter clay houses benefit from a robust heat storage capacity.

I feel strongly that young adults should serve 2 years in all countries to help build their future, for example: training in building sustainable housing, land reclamation, reforestation, building out better planned cities, etc. We have the knowlege. ❤
One of the good things about this piece is showing that there are some governments that are being responsive and proactive to deal with climate change. That's good government at work. Having said that, that type of construction (loam) is nothing new, in Spanish Loam is adobe or lodo, they are just using it in different ways. The cisterns that she's building were in use about 4,000 years BCE by people in Lebanon. The Romans also used them. I think, and correct me if I am wrong, the Spanish called them Aljibes. The Mayans called them Chultúns. It's ancient technology adapted for cities today. I think using Loam is a wonderful idea especially in Northern Europe where earthquakes are few and far between and when you guys have them they are not very strong. Adobe construction regulates temperature and humidity really well. I wish we could use them in the ring of fire, but we cannot.
Excellent program. In Australia many people, including myself, build their own houses, on low budgets. I was my own designer and landscape architect as well. Some ideas for climate resilience measures for private houses would be appreciated. Many houses are being built by professional builders but using very old designs, unfortunately. And they receive rapid approval. Your next video could cover this topic.

I think the point is that even while these sorts of things are still going to be built, we can build them better suited to make the cities healthier than they are now. Like, the parking garage for the government center was going to be built regardless, at least this way it’s being built to be porous and not contribute to the flooding problem that city has.
At least it's not as bad as a sterile parking lot. But yeah, I mostly agree, even more so because cars are a big part of the problem, and in a metropolis like Bangkok you shouldn't need one, much less parking facilities in a new building.

Look at all the young trees. There are too many trees cut down. Too much concrete, pavement. It makes the earth hotter. Trees really help keep our earth cooler. WE need more trees. Green roofs.

What they call Loom in europe we call adobe in the SW US. Adobe is made from clay and straw. When a home is built from adobe it takes longer for outside heat to get inside. Plus it's organic material, so can go directly back into the earth. Plus it last a very long time. It's also bug resistant and fire resistant.
Is it suitable for wet and humid environments though?
@@CampingforCool41 Yes. We get monsoons here every year. Some of the adobe houses around here are over 50 yrs old. And I'm not talking about stuco either. Adobe houses usually have walls that are about 6-9in. thick. That's part of the reason their so energy efficient. The tribal people around here have been using adobe since before europeans came here.
@@bad-dogz 50+ years isn't that impressive for a house. Traditionally built houses in Europe have been standing for centuries, I grew up in one that was built in the 1780s, and most nearby were the same or older. And temperature control in these older houses isn't bad either, no need of AC.
Though I guess loam/adobe is easy to rebuild, or extend, when needed.
@@_asphobelle6887 The homes you speak of lasting centuries are made from stone and mortar. Which is much more long lasting. But much harder to work with. I have spent a bit of time in European countries and have seen these places. And they are quite beautiful. Those who built them were true craftsman. Adobe and loom are made from earth materials that are processed to make them more durable than wood, but not as durable as stone. Plus earth material is easily attainable anywhere. Whereas stone isn't always as available.

Working on roofs a large part of my life where temperatures get close to 100 degrees celsius, I wonder about the future,,,

100 C? I've been on many roofs in my 37 years in construction and have never seen temps that high, that's the boiling point. Humans couldn't much more then 60 C for just a few minutes.
@@dougtheslug6435 I had working in very hot weather, approx 39 Celsius. We was ordered us to drink about 1/2 litre of water, thirsty or not, before we began working.
10 minters later it was break time, and we felt thirsty, and happily drank another 1/2 litre.of water
We was totally exhausted and boss cancelled work for the rest of the day, and send us home, because it was so hot.

Long ago, our ancestors had to learn to adapt to an Ice Age - many didn't survive it. Now the climate pendulum is swinging in the other direction. We will have to learn to adapt to a Greenhouse Age - many may not survive it.
In both cases, adaptation is about innovation, lifestyle change, and collaboration. We need a whole lot more of each.
Good to see more innovation in construction, building materials and sustainable design. Try something different, because normal isn't going to work well in our climate future.
To clarify, we are causing the climate pendulum to swing. The natural climate cycle would remain stable for a few more thousand years before gradually cooling into a glacial phase again instead of warming over 100 times faster than even extinction events

My granparents' house was built in the 1950s out of clay and wood, it's still standing today. There are no better materials for building insulation. If you westerners need some experts on these materials, try Romania, we might still have some people who actually know how to build a proper house ;)

the first problem we need to address is usage of plastics. laws allow every tiny item to be wrapped in plastic. plastic is being thrown into rivers and navigates into the sea in the third world countries. we must by all means invest in developping biodegradable packaging products. crop residuals are a starting point. why isn't the society massively investing here?

Humidity is equally damaging. Every 10% increase in relative humidity is physiologically equal to a 1.5C increase in drybulb temperature. The whole grenning and tree planting movement is horribly inconsistent with the latest science.
What is needed is to decrease total heat production, not a simple conversion from sensible heat (drybulb temperature) to latent heat (evaporated water and increased humidity). High albedo surfaces and selective IR emitters are among the feasible ways forward.
Cleaner air in Europe is contributing to more intense heatwaves due to the reduced cooling effect from air pollutants like aerosols and particulate matter.
Aerosols and particulate matter in the air can actually help reflect some of the sun's radiation back into space, providing a cooling effect.
As air pollution levels have decreased in Europe over recent decades due to environmental policies, there are now fewer aerosols to reflect sunlight.
This allows more solar radiation to reach the Earth's surface, resulting in higher temperatures during summer heatwave periods. A study by researchers at ETH Zürich found that regional climate models used by European planners have significantly underestimated future summer warming and heatwave intensity because they failed to account for the effects of declining air pollution levels.
The models that did factor in cleaner air and the reduced cooling effect from aerosols matched the observed warming more accurately.
So while reducing air pollution has improved public health, the unintended consequence is more intense summer heatwaves due to the lack of aerosols reflecting sunlight.
This phenomenon is scientifically backed and not propaganda or misinformation against climate activists. In fact, it underscores the need for urgent action on both air pollution and climate change to protect public health.

I do not strongly question our ability to invent solutions
I do not strongly object to the proposition that maybe we have time to act.
My main concerns are three-fold:
- the impact of the momentum of our whole system of production on ecisionmaking and acting on a large scale on the nature of the problem as it is currently understood.
- And in terms of culturally validating and implementing initiatives - or even recognising the problem in the first place - the perfect ability of a large part of the human population to ignore, project responsibility for or vehemently deny the problem until the point of individual annihilation.
- The systemic impact on the efficacy of rationality in societies increasingly developing into fear-based cultures under these pressures characterised by authortarianism, denial of reality and the existence of truth, paranoia towards the other and a rise in armed conflict.
Those I think have the potential to derail any structured attempt at general survival.
Genetic engineering and planetary engineering must actively fight CO2, xenobiotics and plastic waste.
Instead we have weak limitation of combustion instead real work.

But we've been living green and considerate about our environment in tropical environments like in Southern Africa were i am from, until we were told we are living wrong and backward. Issues of flooding, hail storms, snow (which is very rare in Africa, our winters are dry and wet/rainy) and now it's ridiculously hot even for a place like Africa! It is unbearable in summer in these concrete buildings, AC or not but somehow our "mud huts" were clowned then but it has always been a way better green option than concrete then and now... All because we are trying to fit in European standards of civilization.
*Please note, not everything European is inherently bad or evil. We appreciate the advances western civilization has positively contributed to the world but let's agree that concrete mega cities are not sustainable.

It increases the sizes of the structural skeleton, plus that of the foundation, and will be detrimental for buildings in seismic areas.
On the contrary, lightweight construction holds way more promise, as it has been established from solid scientific research.
Arguing that loam has good thermal capacity does not suffice to counteract all these problems that it creates!
In fact, scientists work in finding light-weight solutions for these building applications.
However, bio-based materials is part of the future built environment problem solution. It is just that this guy’s (loam) one-material solution, will never be the case for addressing the very complicated problem of the future buildings. It needs a combined system. Not a one-material solution!
For example, prefabricated wall panelised systems, that include bio-based materials appear to be part of the future. On-site construction has been evidenced to relate to many problems, and should be minimized!
Best to conform personally to realism, abandoning hope. Harsh yes. What nations are actually preparing ? Likely none. Same path of if we do this etc. Somehow we buy time. There is no escaping what is already arriving fast and furious. It isn't even a failed systems at this point. It simply was and now is. No human can comprehend the scale of what has will occur.

It is pure stupidity to even argue that building climate resilient structures saves us. It is only a TINY portion of the problem.
LOSING FARMLANDS and FRESH WATER are much greater ones. Losing most of the natural resources like coral reefs among 25% of marine life will hit us hard too. We are losing mountain glaciers that grants us most fresh water (ie. Alpine glaciers gone by 2050-2070, 40% of Europe's fresh water). Heatwaves, wildfire, heavy rain and flood -cycle is taking its toll everywhere. Most major food production areas might get hit soon, if jet stream gets it waves in some already predicted pattern. At over 32C plants shutdown their breathing and stops photosynthesis. When this happens longer timeperiods, plants die.
Without food and water there will be no cities.
Even if we could build everything that we have already build again with higher standards and all possible extreme events in mind takes time and most of the remaining resources. And while trying to do so, we keep on harming and making great harm to the very systems that we seek to get covered. Concrete buildings - mostly means loads of ghgs. Metals - more ghgs. And so on.
What we has to do is build cities for all coastal residents, because they will get flooded. 12-20 meters of sea level rise by 2300 at only 2C (State of cryosphere 2023). That will impact half of the global population directly and all indirectly. 77% of IPCC climate experts says that we end to 2,5-5,0C (or over) warming.
Therefore, just building cities to be more resilent does not matter. It only matters if we get our emissions in control and very soon.
The only real thing that gives us real protection is taking out the very emissions that creates this mess. And while doing so, keep also SO2 emissions in mind, lessening cloud cover will rise temperatures rapidly.
The most impactful thing today is:
Stop burning fossil fuels.
Also noting that some authorities in Bangkok are suggesting that the city and its residents has to be moved away... Sinking city with flooding and rising seas just causes too many problems.
