  • What is a wide playmaker? David Beckham's role in Sir Alex Ferguson's 1999 Manchester United Treble winning side explained. The former Man United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and PSG right winger had a fabulous career in football across Europe and in the MLS. The former England captain played as a wide playmaker in Alex Ferguson’s 4-4-2 at Man Utd.
Let’s go back to 1999 to Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble winning Manchester United side. The Red Devils won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the 1998/99 season with Fergie using his classic 4-4-2 which would often look like a 4-2-4 in attack. The midfield consisted of a winger on the left, a deep-lying playmaker and a ball-winner midfielder in central midfield in Giggs, Scholes and Keane with a wide playmaker in David Beckham on the right. United in 1999 were a direct side and looked to get the ball to their two centre forwards, mainly Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole to cause the damage in the final third. Ryan Giggs offered the direct dribbling option on the left hand side, whereas Beckham’s job in Ferguson’s first great team was to feed them. Either by dropping deep to defensive midfield or right back before hitting one of his trademark diagonal long passes, progressing the ball in central midfield into the strikers feet with 1-2s or by simply crossing the ball from the right. Getting the ball to the strikers was so key for Alex Ferguson’s system to work and Beckham played the vital link between midfield and attack. On the way to the final at the Nou Camp against Bayern Munich, Beckham was directly involved in eight of the 27 goals, but also the architect of many others. From the right wing, Beckham was the creative hub of the only team ever to have won the continental treble in English football.
David Beckham wasn’t the typical winger who’s blessed with blistering pace, physical attributes or the skill to take his man on all game. Compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Nani and many other wingers that have played for Manchester United over the years. This meant that his technical skills were outstanding; his first touch, passing off both feet, shooting, crossing and close control. Not renowned for fancy footwork, but rather Beckham would use his first touch to escape pressure before usually delivering the ball into the box. David Beckham gained Sir Alex’s trust to play that role through hard work and phenomenal passing ability, this complemented arguably one of the best sides in the history of football (Manchester United 98/99 treble). Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield made up of the class of 92 in Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham and captain Roy Keane.
The closest thing to Beckham in the modern game is Kevin De Bruyne. Like Beckham, De Bruyne isn’t blessed with pace or strength but he can put a ball on a sixpence like the former England Captain could. The one area nobody stacks up to Beckham however is his set piece delivery. David Beckham has scored 15 free kicks in the Premier League, more than any other player in the competitions history. Assists from set pieces are tricky and almost come down to luck. You can deliver the best corner time and time again and the chaos in the centre can mean that the attacker can’t redirect the ball, the defender clears it or nobody gets on the end of it. In fact just 1.7% of all corners taken directly result in a goal. But Beckham would consistently deliver wicked corners and free kicks, and goals would come of them, even if the England Legend didn’t register an assist. Manchester United’s 1999 Champions League run in perfectly highlights this. In the semi final, Beckham delivered a peach right onto Roy Keane’s head to half the deficit. In the final, United scored both their goals from corners, Teddy Sheringham’s goal came from the second phase after Beckham’s menacing delivery caused chaos. Giggs put the ball back in and Sheringham finished. Solskjær’s winner came from an identical cross for Keane’s goal in Turin. Sheringham flicked it on and Solskjær finished at the back post. That season in the Champions League, just 12% of Beckham’s 8 assists came from set pieces debunking the myth that Beckham was just a set piece merchant.

Excellent, and long-overdue, appreciation of that team's most dangerous player. I remember two quotes about Beckham. The year Man Utd won the Treble, Rivaldo, who won the Ballon d'Or ahead of Beckham in second, said of Beckham's crosses that they were 'almost like goals' as they were so accurate and hard to defend against. The other is from Arsene Wenger, who said that the English would only appreciate Beckham's qualities once he had retired. It seems it's going to take even longer, but your video will help.

@@yooalex4173 You were absolutly wrong. Alexander Arnold is as close as it gets to David Beckham nowadays. The amount of assists from crosses he has this season is astonishing. Also in Liverpools system the wingbacks are literally the most important part and the argument of Salah being infront of him makes no sense. Salah plays as an inside forward and AA gets a lot of attacking freedom which makes him conparable to Beckham despite being a wingback. And if you don't believe me, even Dave said it briefly in a video.

Di Maria is also another similar type of player when played as a Left Midfielder. Even though he's more gifted with pace and dribbling ability he is similar to Beckham when played as a Left Midfielder because of his crossing ability and knack of playing an early ball from deep. Eriksen and Rakitic also often operate in similar roles. Would love to have someone like that at United, Lukaku would have been scoring goals left right and centre with that kind of supply.

Don't even try to compare Di Maria to Beckham, Beckham is classes above and his workrate alone shows this. You'd never see Di Maria covering PSGs backline or covering for Marcelo/Ramos back at Real Madrid. Di Maria was useless at United albeit played out of position. Eriksen I agree with, but Rakitic is only good due to Messi leading Barcelona

Adam Timung Di Maria is a right-footed playing on the left or so called inverted winger. Different than Becks

@@h2o4all1771 Relax mate, of course Beckham is a class above most players, I'm simply stating that Di Maria plays a similar role to that of Beckham when played as a Left Midfielder who likes to deliver early crosses deep from that half space, except he does it from the left instead of the right of midfield because he's left footed. They are similar while playing that wide midfield role while they also had other attributes which were different to each other. Doesn't matter if Di Maria was a flop at United, he was world class at Real Madrid and he is at PSG, plus he's one of the best crossers in the modern game. Also Rakitic is one of the best Midfielders in the game today and is one of the most underrated, you should watch him more often, it's really naive of you to think he's good only because of Messi, he is brilliant for Croatia aswell.

@@simajayaredevil Lol no, he's left footed and he's been playing on the left this season. He can also play on the right as an inverted winger too but I'm simply stating that he plays that wide playmaker role similar to that of Beckham when played on the left where he can deliver crosses and early balls into to box, albeit he's quicker and dribbles more while Beckham had better work rate, they performed the core role of that position similarly in the basic sense.

Adam Timung i agree to some extent, but di maria has more pace and trickery in him, makes him more of a winger instead of a playmaker. He also likes to go one-on-one against defender.

Definitely, wide playmakers are a gift. I consider current football almost non-creative as playmakers are being replaced by pace and workrate. Physical predominance combined with simplicity and a lot of discipline on the pitch results in good decision-making overall, reducing the prevalence of mistakes (Liverpool). To have intelligence on wide positions like ManUnited with both Beckham and Giggs is rarity!

Just one thing though, De Bruyne physical strength is good considering his relatively medium height. Also I think Beckham's greatest gift was his shot technique resulting in unparalleled swirl on the ball, probably the best football has ever produced!

I would say his closest resembles in modern day is James ward-prowess, Kevin de bruyne is genuine playmaker, to qualify this role, one needs to dictate tempo, beckem rarely do
