Hmm, I would have thought that while Baresi was without doubt the last 'great' libero, I would posit that Gullit (when he first arrived at Chelsea) was also outstanding in a 'libero' role and arguably the best that the FL/PL has seen...Gullit obviously having that knowledge that he had learned from playing WITH Baresi at Milan to draw from. I would also argue that while not a 'pure' libero, Alan Hansen for Liverpool was the nearest thing that English football had seen to one at that point...outstanding at controlling play from the back, bringing the ball out of pressure and with an excellent range of passing, he linked the whole of the Liverpool team together.
I used to play Fife football games, in the early naughtiest I played Edgar David's as my Libero in a back 3, with him pushing forward when the team had the ball, and more like a high press aggressive sweeper without the ball.... Worked well. !
Finally, i've been waiting for this sooo long, Dave. Could've also mentioned Hummels in the center of the of backline Dortmunds recent 3-4-3 often starting Dortmunds attacks with precise passes, or under Klopp where he also dribbled out of the back from time to time. And maybe David Alabas new role at cb at Bayern this season (i know he also played cb under Pep several times)? What do you think about him there ? But amazing work there nonetheless, always love watching your content. Greetings from Germany
I don't really see how Alaba plays anything like a Libero. I mean it is obvious that he has an outstanding technique for a CB but he doesn't start attacks with long passes often and certainly never dribbles through midfield. Also wanna mention that Boateng used to play some impressive long balls a few years ago under Guardiola
@@Allschmoi You're right that Alaba is more of a ballplaying cb not a Libero but since he's playing really well there and certainly would posesses the technique to fulfill auch a role - also with the revelation of Davies at RB - i think he could more and more grow into the role of a Libero/ really progressive ballplaying cb. Let me hear what you think about him.
I would say that Alaba has played more like a ball playing defender this season. Nevertheless his passing has been brilliant. The amazing football Bayern have played lately is much due to Alabas ability too make passes that slice through the opponents midfield. Watching Bayern this season is so entertaining, they really play some amazing football.

Beckenbauer spent pretty much whole of his career in a back 4, both for Bayern Munich and West Germany. Kind of makes your whole segment on him a bit pointless. His uniqueness was in that - he somehow managed to be an attacking libero without sacrificing another defender to cover for him.

David Luiz is rumoured to be on £125k per week at Arsenal just now, however they are set to let him leave for free at the end of the season. At the age of 33 it’s fair to say David Luiz is no longer in his prime and likely isn’t going to sign for one of Europe’s elite clubs to be a starter. So why not Celtic? Money is clearly not something David Luiz is short of, so money may play less of a factor in his next and possibly final move. He will probably just want playing time now. At Celtic he would get one final shot at Champions League football (which he wouldn’t get at Arsenal), he’ll get to play in front of the best fans in the UK and could play a role in Celtic’s historical 10IAR season, should they win the title. I honestly think Luiz is an amazing player, criminally underrated, and those who see him as a terrible CB are missing the point. I mean, is Messi a great goalkeeper? That question is meaningless and so are its answers. To me, a meaningless question like that is aplyed to Luiz all the time. I feel like he is almost always a victim of bad management. He never was, isn't and never will be a CB. That's just not who he is as a player, and using him in a CB role won't change that. So, there is no point evaluating him as one. David Luiz is a libero and, when deployed in that role, he ALWAYS excelled. When Conte was at Chelsea, one could argue he was one of the best defenders of world football. The thing is that the libero is a uber-rare player, so people have trouble identifying one and managers have little knowledge on how to wield such a tool. It's a really specific playstyle. That said, I think David Luiz is amazing at it.
Baresi was nicknamed "Kaiser Franz" because he was considered to be the next "Der Kaiser", Beckenbauer's successor in a modern game (and playing on the similarities of their names, Franco/Franz).
Playing with a libero isn’t there anymore. The game advanced beyond that level as well as with the development of the tactical zones and tactical marking. Specially with fading of classic no. 10 the libero is not needed to press the playmaker. Deep laying play maker like a true no. 6 as in Pirlo easily Substituted that role with football playing player
If arsenal Tries this with David Declining Luiz. faster players will kill him by runs in behind and making oddside trap irrelevnt. Outdated Tactic in this day and age. Good video though Dave

Gullit was moved into midfield by Glenn Hoddle as the sweeper position wasn’t working for them. Laurent Blanc was a great libero after Baresi retired.

What is a Libero? | Trent Alexander-Arnold's role in Klopp’s Arsenal explained
We did see it return but it returned to end arteta title hopes
would it be possible to assign Xhaka for that position, regarding David Luiz rumor recently?
Libero is a DPS player for NYXL
Luiz is not a Libero, more like a liability. Loved him at Chelsea, great contribution but Frank Lampard was spot on not to include him in his plan.
Beckenbauer is Kaiser Franz, not Baresi lmaooo Kaiser is the german word for "emperor"
Baresi was nicknamed "Kaiser Franz" because he was considered to be the next "Der Kaiser", Beckenbauer's successor in a modern game (and playing on the similarities of their names, Franco/Franz).
The GK will build from deep now like Ederson
Very good point. Maybe the most Sweeper like player at the moment.
And the very first goalkeeper with these kind of attributes and tasks was a Hungarian GK, named Gyula Grosics in the Golden Team 🙂
Ethan Ampadou is used as a libero by RB Leipzig
Cannavaro was the last CB to win the Ballon d'or...
Is Fekir a good replacement for Ozil?
Can you please make a video regarding how Joshua Zirkzee from Bayern could replace lewandowski in the future @statmandave

What is letting opposition score easily? | David Luiz's role in Arteta's Arsenal explained
The United come back against Newcastle last season..Pogba executed this Libero role that day
U need a hair cut😂
Good video🔥🔥
MAKE A LEICESTER CITY VID
He did on Roger's side
Playing with a libero isn’t there anymore. The game advanced beyond that level as well as with the development of the tactical zones and tactical marking. Specially with fading of classic no. 10 the libero is not needed to press the playmaker. Deep laying play maker like a true no. 6 as in Pirlo easily Substituted that role with football playing player
High quality video. Luiz' career is over, though ...
Would you make an fm20 mobile tactics guide for man u
4-2-3-1 - Attacking - GK - WB CB CB WB - BWM APM - IF SS IF - AF
13mn set up for a 30 secs section about Luiz omegalul
If arsenal Tries this with David Declining Luiz. faster players will kill him by runs in behind and making oddside trap irrelevnt. Outdated Tactic in this day and age. Good video though Dave
