"The English distrust of pure creativity"
I couldn't agree more, most people only care about urgency and aggressiveness as the main quality to thrive in English football. More like the old terms "Kick and Rush"
and people wonder why england has all these amazing players but cant do anything when it comes to international competition. change the league then youll see the results.
A few times I've heard this criticism of Irish and English grassroots systems: That they prioritise tall, strong lads in the teenage years, over the more creative/skillful, but perhaps smaller and physically weaker boys. While the physically superior players may benefit the youth teams in the short term, long term it breeds a culture of technically inferior footballers. In European countries like Spain it's the exact opposite, developing the skills of players is the biggest priority.
This criticism is probably more aimed at the Irish system, but when it boils down to it, the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Pirlo had that technical edge over the likes of Lampard and Gerrard and it showed when it really mattered at international level.

Bob Henry you cant use that logic. In european football, pep has done well. Won leagues and CLs. Why? Same reason why pl teams are not successful anymore ever since united v chelsea. Even united lost to barca in 2001 (pep's team).
The old fashioned pl way is the one bringing english football down. Fact, not opinion.
Just to be clear on this Carrick issue - as a few comments have mentioned it - this video is not suggesting that Carrick is *not* masterful in Manchester United's midfield. On the contrary, we're saying that, in a league in which the general style does not lend itself to registas, Carrick has managed to parallel the work of top players in this position in other leagues.
The point made regarding his potential merely suggests that, were he playing in another league more suited to his natural ability, he might be generally considered on a par with the likes of Pirlo. The very fact that he is discussed as "underrated" in this comments section suggests that there is no consensus regarding his ability. That's what we're pointing out.
As a Barca fan, would like to hear your views on Busquets' role in the Spain and Barca team. Does he qualify as a 'regista' or ball winning deep midfielder?
In my opinion, he does both but would still like to hear your views.
My view is that Busquets has made and was put into his own role. He plays in the same position and has the same play style as the other registas but due to Barca's short passing style, his usually play quick 1-2, short passes through the midfield line for the advance playmakers in front like Messi, Iniesta.
I'd consider him a different variation of regista, and THE BEST at that. Amazing player.
I'm sorry but if 100M can get him from Barca I'd like ManUtd to try for him
Busquets is a curious case. He is quite free and has the tendency to roam all over the width of the midfield, as well as Lavolping (term used to describe a DM putting himself between the 2 CBs), he has much better reading of the game on the defensive side than your typical regista, and he excels in all ranges of passing. However, his role neither for FCB or Spain (before the decay started) is that of an actual deep lying playmaker, he always left that more to Xavi (who also had the tendency to drop quite deep, which is why he sinergized so well with Busi) or nowadays Iniesta. He is more of a libero, always covering for the space left, linking lines of defence and offense, offering himself as a passing option and recycling possesion. Could he play as a regista? I think so, and as things are going in Catalunya, when Andres cant start a game a week, he'll probably be the main DLP.
Adding to what you mentioned, Busquets will also on occassion bypass the midfield and put through balls to the likes of Messi, Suarez and Neymar. Yes, Barcelona's style tends to favor short passes but that is usually done in order to lull defenders so that they then cut a long, unexpected pass or run and unsettle the opposing defense. I think a good example of this was Sergi Roberto's assist for Luis Suarez during the 2015/2016 clasico where he played on the wing. I think he played a couple of one, two's with Busquets and somebody else whilst he had his back turned towards the Madrid goal. All of a sudden, it was the second ball which came from Busquets, that was returned to the space that Sergi Roberto could exploit.
IMO, Busquet role is more like a libero rather than regista.

It changes, it used to be 4231 that was OP. This year 41212 and 4321 were probably the best. 433 is so worthless in fifa 18 it is infuriating.

The most beautiful position in football! The most pleasant thing I've ever watched live in football was Pirlo coming on as a sub in an Italy friendly a few years back-suddenly the whole field opened up, and players kept giving him the ball and moving forwards knowing that they could be found almost immediately with an accurate pass from deep. Unique & rare players, cherish them if you're lucky enough to have a true regista in your team.

I'm italian and I don't speak eng but I try to explain about italian football even with some name of famous italian (and not) players so you can make a comparison.
-Libero doesn't exist anymore in Italy since Arrigo Sacchi started with 442 (4-line defenders and the extreme offside tactics) him played a total zone; before the Libero (Scirea was a typical example) playing not in line with the others but more back, needed speed and good technique to set up the game or make long passes and the ability to close the other mistakes because was the last man before goalkeeper.
In the famous Sacchi team (the "dutch Milan") the Libero was Baresi but playing in line and called the offside, pressing and team movements, it was the defense leader.
-Regista is a player like Pirlo, nothing more or less; great technique, timing, ability to keep the ball and making long passes/assist, the player who dictates the game times etc (like on this video).
-Trequartista-Fantastista are the same thing, the best italian Fantasista, and player in general, Roberto Baggio was a typical example of this role; not everyone knows but him played almost his entire career on "one" leg for a serious injury by young man (many believed that it would never returned to play) other are players like Mancini or Totti, Del Piero instead was a second striker in my opinion.
The difference from a Fantasista vs a "simple" striker it's that it combines the skills to score and to make assists (ie Roberto Mancini who liked assist more than scoring goals himself); the Trequartista-Fantasista features are creativity, technique, score and a bit 'of madness.
I have seen Maradona playing live (game and training) and for me he was the best in this role and like player too (regardless of everything); I remember also (in serie A) players like Zico, Falcao, Platini and (in my team) a great player like Laudrup and my love Gazza (that in its way it was a Fantasista).

Good commentary on the role of playmaker v. disrupter. The one thing I think this video failed to mention though, and what players like Pirlo and Alonso do so beautifully well, is that a Regista is responsible for setting the tempo! That's the problem with the English/American game. There is no tempo to the game, it's all sprinting and direct play.
Smart players (Pirlo, Alonso, Riquelme, Valderamma) they know how to control the pace of a game. This is why Pogba is still struggling in England, because he's still stuck believing himself to be an attacking-minded Regista and he simply can't adjust to a pace that is always frantic. It's not going to work for him in England, unless he adjusts, especially with the way Mourinho has the rest of the squad playing.
Players that try to mimic Pirlo are often underrated in youth football here in the US. I say we need more of them. We've got plenty of athletes, but very few thinkers.

I believe he already has to a degree. I was watching Chelsea v Man City and in the first half Chelsea were getting sucked into playing a fast paced back and forth with Man City. In the second half Fabregas could be seen lying deep and playing balls forward to Hazard, Costa and Moses on the wing and Chelsea slowly began to take control of the game and unleash devastating counter attacks.
Probably not, Fabregas's best days are behind him - he was probably the 5th best midfielder in the world behind Iniesta, Xavi, Xabi and Pirlo when he was at Arsenal. He's still up there these days, but not like before.
So do you think that if Carrick spent his whole career in Italy, he'd be a footballing icon like Pirlo and Alonso?
TheOneUndOnly Possibly not. Carrick used to get injure a lot. And he's anyway had a successful career, winning many titled. However, you can say that he isn't as recognized as he should be.

Thiago Motta is more of a regista in PSG's team. Best modern day registas are Busquets, Kroos, Alonso.
Julian Weigl is perhaps the most promising young regista in modern day football.
Damn. You're dumb mate. Neutral or not, you must accept how good of a player Busquets really is. As of now, the best regista in world football. His current form, along with Umtiti's (wish he comes back stronger), Ter Stegen, Messi's makes the team run. WIthout Busquets, barca would be lost.

Busquets is not a regista, he's a defensive midfielder. He has no creativity. Verratti is a regista, for instance. Fabregas also could play as a regista.
No creativity? Have you seen Busquets play? His through balls, vision and long passing are great. Also Verratti is not a regista yet he doesn't sit like Busquets and Pirlo, he is more box to box. Fabregas could be a regista, he has good long passing and vision.
Busquets is the most creative midfielder in the world
Busquets' passing in early part of his career was overshadowed by brilliance of Xavi. However, since Xavi's departure, he has carried the distribution duties very well. He has a full passing range, vision and technique of a regista and is better defensively than Xabi and Pirlo.
This video failed to mention Pep Guardiola under Cruyff and how much he values that deeplying playmaker as a coach. Amusing how he became the victim of creator-destroyer trend of early 2000s, having to leave Barca. The way he went and replaced Pirlo in Mazzone's team. He came back as a coach to bring his own identity back into next generation of footballers. He gave the break to Busquets, made Xabi a full regista at Bayern and has used 90 year-old Yaya as a regista in last few months because City don't have a good, passing, well-tempered DM. Mazzone, Ancelotti and Guardiola, the true exponents of registas in modern football.

Can you do a video on a breakdown of modern total football? I'm a huge fan of possession style and technical football, but I've seen the style evolve immensely over the years from a conservative, slow building tiki taka to a quick switch to counter attacks adding a more direct approach. Thanks!

I really like that this video mentioned how much the other midfielders have to work to cover for a regista like Pirlo. It's a very languid position and style and that workload gets dumped onto other players.

Great guest and listen as always. Jonathan is arguably the best journalist (or writer or football observer, aptly) to elaborate on the evolution of the game, tactical patterns from both yesteryear and modern day , and of course all things Barçelona. Lastly, his books and fleeting appearances on the Football Weekly podcast are often filled with insightful takes and good-natured ribbing (dry humour laden) with Barry Glendenning.

There is one, from about a month back. It's called "How the back four killed the traditional winger". And in my opinion, pragmatism also did him in. Crossing is a far worse chance-creating tool than short passes + with the athleticism of full-backs, there's no need to dedicate a player to that role when full backs can do that.
Manuel Locatelli of AC Milan, is a young Regista, it is his natural position with which he played in even in the Primavera!

Michael Carrick is not just a deep-lying playmaker though. He is so good at cutting off passing lanes and standing in the right position. His tactical intelligence is second to none and he is one of the most underrated central midfielders of the past 15 years.
Another good shout is obviously Sergio Busquets. This may not be his best season but over the past 6-7 years there has been no one better playing in front of the defense, spraying balls but also winning ground duels and breaking up play. Sure, Pirlo has better vision and a better passing foot, but not the quality of reading the game like Busquets.
Maybe Verratti could be thrown into the discussion too.
Scholes was deployed this way in the latter part of his career, as was Gerrard for a while under Brendan Rodgers (even though he wasn't as good as when he was a marauding box-to-box midfielder).
jsem94 Pirlo can read game way way better than Sergio. At his prime, Pirlo was pretty much Xavi+Busquets combined. The only thing busquets does better than Pirlo is his defense
Carrick won everything in club football. Several Premier Leagues, a Champions League, FA Cups, a League Cup. I think he'll be quite proud of himself. He had a very good career. And Carrick and Scholes formed an awesome CM partnership. One of the best I've ever heard of. Maybe he should've won multiple UCLs, but, Barcelona, the best team of his era, has Xavi and Iniesta already. He did very well, I think.

Great video! I would love to see a video on attacking fullback or more offensive center half explained as I'd like to learn more about how these positions can be effective versus just keeping your defenders glued to the back line. I feel like a lot of attacking full backs I watch are often caught out of position e.g. Ben Davies recently against Liverpool. He was trying to be attack minded, but kept getting caught out.
As for Carrick, I think the fact that Pep was made fun of for saying he didn't coach tackles sums everything up in my opinion. I think I read somewhere that Pep's 2010-2011 Barcelona side was near the last sides as far as tackle sides in La Liga, yet they were still a sight to behold with their high pressing. There is more than one way to play the game but in England they seem to value athletic ability and a good hard tackle more than intelligence and reading the play before it develops to put yourself in a place where you don't need to slide tackle all the time.

amin ali Kante may sit in front of the defence, but he's not a regista. His role at Leicester and now at Chelsea, has never been to dictate the team's movement.
IMO Fabregas' is perfect for that role though I feel his lack of pace still puts him at a disadvantage. Also Conte's 3-4-3 requires defensive duties paired with dynamism which is why he mostly selects Kanté and Matić
Kante doesnt have the passing prowess to be classifiied as a regista. and also i dont think fabregas would ever be or has ever been a regista based on the fact that he doesnt sit in a defensive role. at barca he played in front of busquets creating going forward himself instead of starting the attack. granted he did start many attacks but he was always playing the ball as the attack continued down the field. this might just be the german in me but i do believe that one of the best modern registas would be toni kroos. he plays a protective role over ramos/pepe/varane and he has pinpoint, elegant, smart passing that starts great counter attack opportunities for madrid in every game.

Maurício Rodrigues I thought of the same thing. The midfield Mistro dictated the games pace in his late days. Almost every United attack went through him.
Are you serious? Gerrard and Lampard are the very definition of 'Hurly Burly scramble' that they described. Both were box to box midfielders that relied on the typical English physicality which is why they were so popular.
Carrick is unhurried elegance. Patient and calm, has a great reading of the game in attack and defence and doesn't need to be overly physical to play his style. He would've been great in Seria A or La Liga.
The England national team would've been far better if they had Carrick in those years. Gerrard and Lampard aren't as calm and solid as him in terms of skill, English are all about stuffing their team with hurly burly scramble with no sense of control or stability

He is a substitute at Chelsea for Christ's sake... Jorginho is everything a regista should avoid doing/being: acting passively during games, playing safe, making very few forward passes, not enough long passes. Just look at the range of passing of Kroos, Pirlo or Xabi Alonso, it's like they are playing a different game compared to Jorginho.

Carrick had an amazing career and was a crucial element in 5 title winning sides, a UCL and 2 further UCL runners up runs.
I'd say he was a massive success despite the frenzied nature of English football.

2:37 in portuguese, G preceeding both E and I makes the sound shift from a hard G to a regular J sound. It's not the same as the english J sound (think Jefferson), but it's still closer and more likely to be understood.

I love these videos but... saying Carrick failed to reached the heights seems disingenuous. Not many players are instrumental in winning 5 bpl titles.
More the fact that he's never been given a real look in for England would account for some of that
He was given a look in though, he has over 30 caps. The reason he didn't win more is because Gareth Barry was a better ball-winner and Carrick's superior range of passing was never really required with players like Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney in the team.

Pirlo was a Regista at inter too before Carlo & AC...it's just that Carlo specifically got Pirlo to fill that role in his tactics. I remember that player Guti from Real Madrid, that guy used to be pinpoint with some of his passes from deep midfield.

If Santi Cazorla's positioning was more rigid he would have been classed as a regista, and he would have been better than Carrick. Undoubtedly one of the best deep lying playmakers in the league at the moment.

Pep made the most defining decision in that period, which was to choose Busquets over Mascherano for that role. In which, Mascherano played as a CDM during Liverpool times. Just very interesting and shows Pep's unorthodox tactical ways.
Ray Delgadillo moreover Sergio Busquets was very young back then, so I guess he was easier to mould into the player he wanted! Pep was also the one to promote Busquets into the first team, having managed him in the youth team!

i play in real life as regista , it's very hard becuase everyone is depending on you , am not fast , but i have the technical ability
TheAnimationEz people say that the GK is the toughest position but the Regista is the toughest...you needed for long range passing, good interceptor and capable of turning defense to attack
Same its how i naturally play most coaches never realized what i was doing or how i was effecting the game at regista or as a 10 but when i moved to academy football and now all my coaches love me and say that if i continue playing and working hard that I might be able to make a debut (D.C. United) although I'm still extremely young and probably a couple of years off that

I play as a striker who is slow, but clinical and very good in the air. I've been playing in the US since I moved there and they lack the idea of a regista. They like to press a lot and expect strikers to beat 10 players with ultra-pace. Tactical innovation needs to be put in the US youth system and teams that I've played against that have mastered tactics usually thrash my side and they protect their regista so much and I see why many times.

Tactically, Gerrard played as a Regista in the 2013-2014 team. Henderson and Coutinho used to press play while Gerrard kept the ball coming from defence and often linking good long balls to Suarez, Stu and Sterling. Not saying that he was one for his whole career, but worked as such during that one.
