I agree with you on crossing and set pieces. He also showed outstanding sportsmanship, which some people view as naive and lacking "mastery of the dark arts".
However, in my view, he had relatively bad decision-making, so I do rate him a bit lower than KdB overall.

His ability to play longballs, is maybe suprassed by Pirlo. Thats it. And thats a maybe. Those were the two best long ball players that ever played. Best pure goal scorer? R9 ronaldo without a question, take a look at some of his stats its rediculous before his injurys, first pro game ever scored 5 goals, first time playing in the big league for FC barca scored 47 in 49 games, he was injured even when we saw him in the first world cup in 1998, and he got robbed the ballon d'or in 96 by 1 point and still won it the next year as youngest ever at 21 but he got robbed in 96, theres a reason to this day hes probably the most quoted player by people and other pros, many many have said without any injurys he would of been the best player ever no question. He was like a messi you couldnt push off the ball, more technical, and just as fast he seemed faster with the ball than without it some have said. Now Ronaldinho is probably the best Gifted talented player weve ever witnessed touch wise, he didnt have that short strong stature like R9 so he had to dance around people more, and it worked like no other. Christiano ronaldo is amazing, but hes more like a mix technical and power, but as a PURE goal scoring machine? has wasnt better than OG R9 Ronaldo. But beckham was amazing, he had some of the greatest long balls and free kicks to this day ive seen. Pirlo was amazing at longballs to, beyond amazing, but maybe not as great of a scorer as beckham but definitly could score.

Not sure about his ability, his strenghts were more in his creativity and imagination than than in his ability per se. He was an excellent footballer but in his career he underachieved (hence overrated) in part because his managers did not find the right position for him.

Two stories I tell about Beckham:
    1) I was fortunate to be at the Greece game where he scored the famous free kick. I was directly behind the strike, and to watch that go into the corner was magical. But over and above that, during that game I've never seen a player be so much better than everybody else during a game. You know when you see a bunch of kids playing and someone's older brother is also in the game, dominating everything? It was like that.
    2) I once watched him and Diego Forlan warming up prior to a game. Beckham was hitting passes to Forlan from 40-50 metres away, and Forlan literally did not have to move an inch to receive the pass. Every time. I've never seen anything like it before or since.
He's a favourite for me in terms of his total offering. Yes the free kicks, the passing and IMO the world's best ever crosser of a ball, but also his workrate, commitment and effort. That all put together made for an iconic player worthy of being in the top 50 of all time.

Beckham was benched by Capello at Real Madrid when he announced his MLS contract early in the season. Capello said he'd never play another minute for Madrid. He ended up working his way back into the squad and led La Liga in assists on the way to winning the title that year. After he went to MLS, he was able to walk into the squads of both AC Milan and PSG in the MLS offseason and was often a dominant starter for those teams while on loan. All done in his early to mid thirties. Absolute legend.

Not only because he was one of the most talented players of his generation, the greatest crosser of all time, one of the best free kick takers this sport has seen and an overall great midfielder, but specially because everything about his game was so unique. The way he moved was unique, the way he took free kicks was unique, even the role he played as a wide playmaker was unique. Beckham is on the tier of players that have a playstyle so unique that you cannot compare them because of how different they are to the point that you can easily identify them simply by the way they move or pass the ball around. It's like Ibrahimovic: no one plays the game the way he plays. Or even Thierry Henry, Roberto Carlos, Ricardo Quaresma, Romário and Thomas Muller. Some players are just a thing of their own even when they're not the best. I can't think of a single footballer that played like Becks.

His crossing and freekick were among the best in football HISTORY, his passing was among the best of his generation, beside that he also had REALLY good stamina and can contribute greatly to both attack and defense. His biggest weakness in my opinion, was the lack of flair and speed, which Wingers often possess. Overall, if it's not for his pretty face and celebrity status, he would've become a legend of the game, and I'm talking about Zidane level because he had that potential.

got during that era. also, i know your a Barca fan but the great Barca team
didn't have a productive wide player like Beckham in their team. Beckham would
of been excellent as a wingback for them if he wasn't old and passed his best.
What your doing really is not judging him on the position he played in, but judging
him against other players who played in different positions who had more impact
on the game because of that. as a winger Beckham was world-class the numbers
and stats speak for themselves and he's in the history books because of that.

I only started following football in 2010, so I asked my friend about Beckham since he was the most popular footballer in America not named Landon Donovan growing up (we've really come a long way in terms of our knowledge of football lol). I think he summarized Beckham's career beautifully "Beckham's greatness is embellished by the British media, but it's far from fictitious". The media back then would be making you think he was on the level of Messi and CR7, which is far from the truth, but in his prime he could walk onto the starting 11 of nearly any (not all, like golden era Barcelona) team. And plus, even if you thought he wasn't as good as some of his contemporaries, he had a knack for coming up big in moments that needed a big clutch moment. I love Thierry Henry, but one of the knocks on his career is that he didn't score in the biggest games as often as he should have (especially for France). I think even if you think Beckham's way overrated, you have to at least give him bonus points for showing up when it mattered the most when so many stars have been known to shrink.

Beckham was quality and a pop icon early on the late 90s, and early 2000's when i was starting to watch more futbol or be more of a fan, in school everybody had their team. One of the reasons i chose to be a united fan was because of beckham , and because i think it was my first jersey , but to be fair, i've followed them for 20 years now. And I've identified a lot with United, their values, Ferguson atleast winning spirit, etc. Its really nice to follow a team through thick and thin. Even if as a very young kid, you dont know or have so clear why your picking your team , now im really have a lot of love for Manchester United and i love watching futbol videos about United, and commenting etc, as a fan for 20 years ive been supporting United, and getting extremely happy when we play well, sign well in transfer market, and following them closely. Beckham was natural , he could dribble, he wasn't a stat merchant, he was clutch as was mentioned, actually they say that a hattrick against Real Madrid or was it 2 ? he scored was the reason they signed him. He was the spice boy. But he was first a footballer. Not a metro like some of these player who maybe perhaps dont act like they love the gme as much once they're millionaires. He was a true footballer, backed it up as I said, his dribbling doesn't go as noticed. His freekick's were inmaculate technique and delicatessen. Vision was insane, but you can see so much from a player that can play those passes. Midfielders, who can put those passes, deserve to be celebrated for it. Those are elements of the game, (passes that break all those lines) that we want to keep having. Lets keep football authentic , beautiful, elegant, classy, tecnical, lets have great skill, and good physicality. Good vision work ehtic etc. Those lobs he could play prove how tecnical he was. Not everybody can do that. And he could dribble as i mentioned. He was good on the ball and that doesnt go as noticed, people say he was just a freekick taker which in itselt is already very tecnical, but he could do a lot more things.! The fact that he was famous outside the pitch dont mean he was a true technical , effective , elegant, classy baller!

I watched Theo literally grow into the footballer he became at Arsenal and for no fault of his, the media, including people at Arsenal made parallels to Henry and that weighed heavily on him through his career. His numbers are spectacular. A world class finisher and arguably the only big game player Arsenal had till Alexis Sanchez was signed. It took me years to acknowledge Theo, and when I look back at his game now, my word what a player he was. Not to forget injuries blighted his career and despite that he ended up being a centurion for Arsenal despite playing majority of his career on the right wing. Super super player.

Now I watch all the major leagues in Europe.
Beckham was famed for his good looks and haircuts (both undeniable. Many of my peers including me had the onion haircut), which goes on to say these factors shadowed his skill and talent. The precision and foresight of his long passes were unprecedented in his era. Where I’m from, commentators even had a name for his long passes “seven whirlwind cross” coz he was no. 7 and his crosses had so much spin and accuracy. Obviously a legend. My first love for football. You have nailed the vedio bro. Described everything that needed to say. But you forgot to mention his red card history in world cup, quite a big event in his career as he himself wrote in his autobiography. Once he became a nation's enemy for that red card. But his charismatic football brought all his fans back to love him.

Said in another comment - used to dislike Beckham the Spice Boy. But it seems that he finally matured as a player, and as a person, after that red card. Decided to just work real hard (and he already worked real hard beforehand, ha), and became the player we all love. There were a few golden (Man U) years where country and club depended on him. A pity, Ferguson just cannot ignore the Spice Girl's antics and sometimes blamed it on Beckham.
That match vs Real Madrid, where Veron started in place of Beckham despite just returning from, what, months off? Fat Ronaldo had three chances, and scored 3 (my god. People who dont know R9 should watch the highlights of that match. The way he seemingly toyed with Man U almost singlehandedly ...) But back on topic - on came Beckham. Did he score a hattrick as well? But definitely at least 2 goals, one his usual freekicks ... Beckham also almost singlehandedly pull Man U back into contention.
Beckham is that kind of player. In Real Madrid, while just one of the literal Galacticos, he was the one star that worked the hardest, for the team. I dont get why people said he declined over at Real. He just evolved into a more central role because Figo usually plays on the right.
Finally, people like to say that he lost interest in football in his later years. I think the opposite is true - he went to Milan because at that time, Milan's sport science centre was famous for PROLONGING careers. Maldini played till, what, 39? At the highest level. Beckham went over, did those freezing baths I presume, when he could have easily ride off into the sunset and lay down on a sunny beach with a trophy wife and happy family ...
Ultimately, I used to be a hater, but now I deeply, deeply respect the man that is the footballer Beckham. And it all started after the red card, yes.

I love watching Beckham play football. I had many joyful memories watching him in his entire career. His passion, freekicks, crosses, long balls, corners, passes, pressing and sometimes his dribbles were done beautifully and elegantly. He's one of the players of Beautiful Football that has gone now. He's there with players like Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo The Phenomenon, Zico, Cruyff, Puskas, Zidane and many others throughout generations that played the Beautiful Football.

Besides his heroics on the pitch, he was and continues to be a global ambassador for football. I was so obsessed with his game, that I switched from being a striker to a midfielder! And the reason was that i just wanted to pass, cross and assist and impact a match like he did. Ofcourse I was nowhere close 😂. And hell noone could ever "Bend It Like Beckham ".

I see people commenting shit like "Messi/CR7 are bigger", that's a statement confined to sports, everyone know they're footballers and their image is tightly associated with it. People don't understand how huge he was, an insane figure in and out the pitch, he was world wide known by people who didn't even watch football just because of how marketeable he was and his status as a cultural icon, one thing is being an sports icon, which he was to start with, and then a personality with such an appeal that you trascend the sport which made your name to a point where there's people who don't even know he played football at all, they knew him by the commercials, reality TV, his celebrity relationships and so on, Beckham was the first footballer to be LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. For me and how i think all should view him, is as an athlete first and then all alse but it's undeniable and pretty understandable to understand his persona the other way around just by how influential he actually was and still is. 😼

Beckham is one of those players who dedicated their career to be a specialist. Which is quite an antithesist to recent football where players with multi specs are more valuable.
He is in special place with Ryan Giggs, Filippo Inzaghi, Andrea Pirlo, Alessandro Nesta, Riquelme.

Great video! There were many other underrated aspects of his game. The guy was an absolute workhorse, ran his heart out every game on the right for Manchester United and in central midfield for Real Madrid. His distance covered was always close to the top. Post the 00's and treble winning season, he started tracking back a lot more and his defensive contributions were great, he was also not afraid to get stuck. As Beckham was incredibly athletic, he also had a great leap. While he did not score many with his head he would often have the better of his full-back in the air and won his fair share of headers on the far post. This is in addition to being the greatest crosser of the ball in history, one of the best ever long to medium range passers; apart from the assists, the way he turned defense into attack with one pass or just broke the lines was so effortless.

@@RaymarFootball With this video you have my respect forever; and of course a subscription. David Beckham was the reason I kicked a football and to this day is my childhood hero. Been watching football for over 25 years and still can genuinely say he was world class. Apart from finishing runner up twice for the FIFA World Player of the year, he was also voted the best midfielder and the overall best player of the Champions League for 98/99. People should look at the list of players who played in the CL that year.

Beckham was a legit legend, arguably the best british passer ever, great vision and one of the greatest free kick takers ever, underrated dribbling and control of the ball too, people forget about the plays because of the hype and fame, but if he played today with the inflated market he'll probably would worth like 300 million 😅

People only called him overrated because he transcended the sport (due to looks) and became something of a cultural / fashion icon -- even more so after marrying one of the Spice Girls. If he didn't have model good looks, and if he didn't marry a famous singer, he would be regarded as what he actually was -- an elite footballer in his position.

If you were ever a ManU or RMA Fan back in the day you know he is absolutely underrated. I can’t count the number of times he put a ball from his own box 70+ yards right into the run of Ronaldo, Raul, Van nistelrooy, etc. he ran up & down the field nonstop & l scored or got an assist in ever other match he played (career avg).
He was almost impossible to defend bc anywhere he was on the pitch he would find a way through. Box him in? Cross over the top right into the strikers run. Back off & cover his options? He’d split defenders with a through ball.
As I mentioned before, even if he got a ball in front of his own goal he could bomb it 80yrds right into the strikers path.
His celebrity overshadowed just how good he was. If he wasn’t so goddamn famous he would probably be widely considered one of the midfield goats. He’s no Zidane, but there hasn’t ever been a better winger.

He's one of the first "idol" type footballers, which makes it a polarizing opinion on how good he was. He undoubtedly had skills. He also had looks, which made many men jealous and took attention away from his footballing.
He was pretty 1 dimensional though, long balls and free kicks being his forte, and even though this video mentioned his dribbling, I wouldn't rank it anywhere close to the top, it was slightly above average at most. His acceleration was pretty bad, making it hard for him to dribble past people from standstill, so all the dribbling he did that made it pass defenders were on the run where he had the advantage of already being at full speed, or from trick plays when receiving the ball, but he wouldn't get too far after that.
With the right strikers, and chemistry between Beckham and said strikers, it's a deadly combination. As Beckham can pretty much get the ball anywhere from anywhere on the pitch with pinpoint accuracy, meaning attacks can precipitate from nothing within an instant. In contrast to "normal" football, where attacks are usually a build up of moves by the entire team.
I've always wondered by Beckham + Owen combo didn't perform better, as it was the perfect combination of super long passing, and a stupidly fast striker, but that may also be because they only need to pressure Beckham to stop his passing completely, which leads back to my observation of his 1 dimensionality.
tldr; he was definitely a good footballer, with emphasis on his long passes and freekicks. But he's overrated by his fans, and underrated by his critics. He's a legend at what he does best, long pass and free kicks, but mediocre otherwise.

A great player who, even if he wasn’t on form, would always work his socks off and put in one hundred percent.
You don’t win the trophies he did, playing for the biggest clubs in the world and having the longevity he did if he was average.
Look at the Man U and Real squads he was starting in. You don’t get in those elevens consistently over many years if you’re not a special player.
