I am usually not the one confirming. My parents follow Jainism and I was always told that it was a true perception of the universe but I always struggled to agree as their teachings were opposite of what I was being told in science books and shows. Finally I just looked at the evidence and concluded that while containing some facts, most of the teachings of Jainism is false and is not based on any empirical evidence. That day I became an agnostic atheist. Apart from this, I am a creative professional which is another thing that most people in India do not recommend as a career option. So I will conclude that while I listen to others' opinion, I follow my own mind.
I tried this experiment myself in school. About 6 of us would give the wrong answer in class, just to see what the rest of the class would answer. It really helped that the 6 of us were the toppers of our class, and therefore very few others would try to oppose our answer. In a class of about 23 people, there were those (5) who never answer a question (the backbenchers who don't care about school). A few others (7) were too shy to answer questions anyways, even though they were smart. Out of the remaining 5, we had 1 who would always steamroll everyone. This guy always gave the answer he thought was correct, and did call a lot of people stupid. The other 4 did conform to everything we (the toppers) said. It was a really great day, I only wish the teacher was involved in the experiment, so they'd also enjoy observing everything.
Conformity for me has not been an issue because I have always been sort of a loner. I remember in the 5th grade, there was this extremely poor girl named "Tonya" who was mercilessly picked on. She had lice and old clothes, etc.. I never participated in the bullying but I never really stopped it. One day a group of girls including myself were in the bathroom and Tonya walked in to use the bathroom. Tonya accidently tucked her dress in her panties. The other girls snickered and refused to tell her. I was the only girl to stand up and tell her "Hey your dress is tucked in your underwear" Tonya said thanks walked out the bathroom. After she left these 6 girls stared at me with hatred and told me I was stupid for telling her and then refused to talk to me for a week. These girls wanted me to apologize to them. Me not giving a dang what they thought was like "yeah, that is not happening" From that day I knew I was different, I said that if it feels wrong to me, it probably is wrong. I question everything and even if it makes me uncomfortable, I go against the grain. I am in an office full of religious zealots who have group think behavior. All of them agree that life starts at conception and that in cases of r@pe or incest a woman should still have the baby. I can assure you that must of these women don't believe and agree with most of the extreme abortion rhetoric and probably had a few abortions themselves but the need to fit in is greater than standing up for what they truly believe.
It's IS groupthink sweety you think LIFE starts when the group tells you to "think" that! It's a matter of Biology sweetey, NOT politics! How many, "cases of r@pe or incest" were involved in the 50/50 Million babies murdered since Roe V Wade? But as is says in the good book, "There is a time & place for everything under the sun.: BUT NOT 450+ each & every day just in the Godless Hell bound, USA!
A lot of cult recruiters found that their richest hunting grounds for recruits were University campuses. Universities are full of smart people with not an over abundance of good sense (due to lack of life experiences), which tends to make them rather vulnerable to smart operators. As to your statement, agreed. They are the people still looking for their way upwards, where upper classes are already there and more likely to be leading the way (Alphas). Many of the lower level people have simply given up on moving upwards and are just busy surviving. However they are more prone to the lower level get rich quick schemes like a sure bet on the horses or poker machines.
Good summary. Autistic spectrum leaning, and already careful about my perceptions, while I'm sure I'd not conform at any age, it would make me question my conclusions, which is actually sensible. I'd lower my "odds of being right" if I saw others disagreed. I'd try to account to myself why I perceived differently, and until I had a reason, I'd hold this in tension - my perceptions and a strange confused majority that needs explaining. I think it would not occur to me initially that people could be lying, but I'd hold that as my last explanation given no other ones that make sense.

Mocked for not drinking alcohol or taking drugs . That poor person is now immobilised and unhealthy just because they wanted look cool in front of their peers. Never be peer pressured into comformity that affect your health. That your true wealth❤️
I would not conform. I know this due to my teenage years, explicit activities in our middle school were common, and so was peer pressure. And I'm stubborn to a fault, the more aggressive a group or individual becomes, the more I look down on them for using such a primitive form of persuasion, so it gets easier. Not sure why this is.
In Asch's conformity experiment, honesty can be likened to holding a royal flush in poker-it's unbeatable. However, speaking the truth comes with the risk of being shunned by the group, especially in more traditional and conformist settings.
People who place their self values on the hands of others or some group identity will succumb to this. They will even condone harassment and abuse if it means they got to be part of such a group. I've seen it over and over again. 🌝
Milgram experiment is another one that shows similar effect, but on a higher lever. It was done after ww2 to show the human morality over authority. However, it shown the darker side of human psychology.
Thank you for this. Once it is exposed, it is easy to see examples. I was an amateur magician and hypnotist as a teenager. As a performer, I was totally aware of the need for a high level of conformity from the crowd... especially with the hypnosis. I was hypnotized several times, and because I knew how it worked, I was immune to the effect, but went along to not spoil the effect. I have tried very hard to get my kids to think for themselves. It hasnt worked that well. They are somewhat ensnared by the woke mind virus. This gives me a new tool about conformity I can use. Doesn't religion work the same way? That's why it's so important to go to church.... so you have a crowd to conform to.
All cults require your regular attendance and participation in order to maintain their control of your thinking. You will be required to attend approved study or courses to blind yourself to anything others will say to you, even if they are telling you the truth and to turn a blind eye to any harm they may be doing. One of the main tools here is the adoption of the "Report your friend/spouse/parent/sibling for any infractions. It gives them the chance to pull them back into the fold before things go too far. The reporter is made to feel self important or rewarded for this, so that behaviour becomes reinforced as well. Steve Hassan is a former Moonie who has since qualified as a psychiatrist specialising in cult recovery. His book "Combatting Cult Mind Control" is an interesting read about this kind of stuff.
In a Soviet documentary called "Я и другие" ("Ya i drugije"/"The others and I") I saw some similar experiments on little kids. In the 1st one the scientist showed a white and a black pyramid to a group of kids, asked them to name the pyramids' colours, and there was a funny moment: after actor kids answered, "Both are white", the tested girl repeated after them, but when the scientist asked her to grab the black one, she did it without any problems I think this experiment and this phrase "Both are white" (rus: obe belyje) even became a meme If you are curious, here's the both-are-white part: ruclips.net/video/IekW1SjaYyQ/видео.html And the whole documentary: ruclips.net/video/_LYe58b-3HM/видео.html
I would like to believe that i would have stuck to the truth, at least for the majority of life. There may have been times when i could conform. I think overall it is important for us as parents/educators, to share our life experiences with children/students,. Things that involve us sticking to the truth and also when we haven't, and may have conformed under certain circumstances. This gives them a chance to learn/understand that there are all sorts of possibilities they are not yet aware of. As this clip perfectly displays. Thanks fior the video
bruh yes, conformity i see it quite allot, its crazy to think about no matter how old or young you are how weird you might look doing the wrong thing. you are still willing to do it just to fit in
Does his conclusion remain valid as we age? I know MANY elderly that will stubbornly hold on to their views, true or not, even if everyone around them is saying something different.
No I would not likely conform, nor have I many times in actual business scenarios; it is to be noted how difficult it was to explain the truth to them, and finally see their errors.
Is this why people in my region refer to a chicken noodle stew as "pot pie?" I've gotten a lot of flack for calling it "chicken stew." People have all kinds of rationalizations as to why we should continue calling it "pot pie" and why I am wrong for favouring "chicken stew" in my own speech. Surprisingly, these arguments are seldom "we do it out of tradition," which is honestly the only rational argument in the case of this linguistic kerfuffle. (In my own, humble opinion, at least.) What's more strange to me is the fire and vitriol with which so many people fight for this hill. We have bigger fish to fry, people! Let me call it chicken stew!
I wonder how many participants figured out the true purpose of the study as they were participating in it and had to be excluded from the results. I know after the second time everybody gave the obviously wrong answer the gears in my head would have started turning...
Certainly, saying what we think or observe is not always a good idea. For years I have been relegated to my job, where bosses prefer to hear that they have great ideas, before listening to possible failures.
Would I conform? It depends on what the situation is. If there isn't any risk of being wrong then maybe, but if it's about being right or wrong then I won't. I know this for sure given the years of varying situations where I'm always the heterodox person on nearly any subject whom is trying to find what is maximally true given the situation best I can. This often leads me not falling in any accepted group completely so I'm often disagreeing with about everyone, but to varying degrees. If you want a recent example, then look at who pushed the covid propaganda. The evidence of the varying subtopics always went against the narrative yet people would conform to the narrative. I (even within my family and friends which is even more mind blowing) was the strongest one against the narrative and sticking to what I knew based on previous experience/knowledge and what I was literally reading from studies, while using basic logic
An OK experiment, though it is easy to conform or not to when you are surrounded by strangers that you will never see again. A better experiment would be to do it with your current co-workers or whatever group of people you are part of.
I generally fall in non conformist. I've noticed it may not be 100% of the time. As I've gotten older, it's more 100%. There is some subconscious about it. 20 to 30% sounds about right. We see that in society today. Th 15% is really loud, however.
Somehow, I see the opposite oeffect more commonly in social media it seems that anonymity, negativity and the desire to be right can take priority over conformity.
conformity in social media is low compared to real life. in social media there is no direct effect of not conforming and it has promoted a culture of being right over conforming. however its quite opposite in social settings where an indivual definitely has to interact with a group with opposite belief

I see this with a "zipper" traffic pattern situation. When the primary lane was switched, it seemed a stupid idea so I analyzed why they did that and realized it was so that it would prompt people to use both lanes. Everyone switched to going single file in the other lane. Wanting to make sure I wasn't wrong, I checked out DOT websites. They are excellent and confirmed my thoughts. I only used the empty lane and maybe had 1 or 2 others join me. I was sure others would start figuring it out but months later they were still single file. Sure of change when it became so blatently obvious how stupid it was for everyone to go single file, it's more than a couple years now. I am amazed. It's a long line, blocking people from a turn lane, and getting in the way or switching lanes back and forth at 2 intersections before. This video makes me wonder how many people see the absurdity of it but don't want to join us mavericks that cruise past all the cars that passed us earlier.
My comment is biased by the fact that I learned about Asch's Conformity Experiment in an attempt to find comfort for the real transformation process I have been going through during the last decade plus. After many years expressing different and lonely opinions, I decided to agree with the position of the majority, even though I am 100% sure it is wrong. Please do not ask me what made me turn 180 degrees and join stupidity. I am approaching 60 years. Still a young boy in this world of uncertainty.

This experiment didn’t explain: Fear of being seen as outcasts is linked to Herd and Tribal instincts, and drives our subliminal priorities for unconscious yearning for safety. Also, Solomon Asch didn’t know to focus on the subject of sensory shutdown correlated with cognitive and moral blind spots, and he did know of the counterpoint of Emotional/Sensory Reawakening, based on engaging with music and the arts, and the existential significance of that during current COUNTDOWN2045. Surprisingly, 300 years ago J.S.Bach was aware of his music to have the effect of antidote to sensory deactivation pressure. That is the reason why he defied dogmas for zombified music. But his strive was not followed and his music became the victim of the tradition, contrary to his lifelong battle with inner force of Herd instinct. Most of his music had been performed in mechanical way. That is why, his miniature masterpiece with the meaning of musical Parody remained obscured and unnoticed. But when it was played with no emotional withholding, it revealed what should be hard to miss - many dissonant sonorities that were banned from use by rules of his time, and yet he emboldened their sonic clashing impact with rhythmic emphasis and used them many times and in such way that reveals his approach of neuroscientist to his music almost three centuries prior to birth of this field… #BachSensoryDeactivationEffect

The first of the lines in the second picture is at the back, the second is in the front, and the third is in line with the line in the first picture.
If i get this correctly, the study showed that groups cannot put a significant amount of pressure to individuals, since only 5% were affected by peer pressure.... This is what i get from this, please correct me if i am mistaken, English is not my native language so i might get something wrong....
@@sprouts thnx for your reply! Yes, sometimes, but even then the percentage was significantly low... If i remember correctly, was it 1 out of 8 or 10?? So again the effect of groups affecting an individual remains at a lower level..

I saw this happen in tiktok. The Hailey hate that is happening where people post "evidence" that Hailey is obsessed with Selena is getting out of hand that even if their so called "evidence" is made up, people still hated on Hailey even though they were not a fan of Selena or Justin. As of now, "evidence" of Selena's past posts were showing up specifically those where she seemed to be a bad person. For me, no one is completely innocent but none of them also deserves the hate because they are both women who Justin Bieber fell in love with (including Selena being his ex and Hailey being his wife). People are bored and obsessed on the lives of others but what can I say. They are celebrities.
I'm not a conformist, I'm a contrarian and an antagonist. The more people that agreed on the wrong answer, the more excited I would be to disagree with them. In fact, the more people agreed on the _right_ answer, the more I would want to examine the other, wrong answers to make sure they're really wrong. I love being the lone dissenting voice in the crowd that turns out to be right. I basically think I'm better than everyone else.
Not only do I know I would have stuck to my own perception, I have done so on numerous occasions during my life. I think these guys have the reason for t his so-called "conformity" wrong. I suspect many, if not most, say they agree with the majority out of cowardice - they are afraid of how the group attacks the one out, who disagrees and says so. So they say they agree with the group our of self protection. Were their lives or that of their loves ones made to depend on telling the truth of what they really think, they would probably always state the correct answer. The other thing these experiments fail in is that [a] they never give a probability % of the population who can and do stick to their own estimate when they are sure it is correct, this would be valuable to know, and the psychology of such people studied, but they also always fail in the way to fix these issues. Because what the conformers say is only half the issue. If you then engage reality -i.e. measurement, what do the conformers do then?? There is a simple answer to the conformers in this case - get out a ruler and measure the lengths. What happens hen, when the sole person to stick their guns is shown to have been correct. Because in my experience --- you get hated. And that is essential to know and how to combat it as a society.
Maybe true, but if this same experiment was conducted in Nigeria or Japan in that same era, would it have resulted in same outcome? Dr. Suess wrote a book on this ‘The Sneetches with stars on thars….”
plz also show some of the criticisms of these experiments also, in the same video. Then we could have a better understanding.
This comment indicates how smart and critical thinker you are. Keep it up, most of these studies especially in physiology which is 150 years old need to be reviewed and tested and Questioned!
This rarely affect me, both offline and online. I am proud when I stand alone several times.
Could it be that you followed your professors in school instead? Think about it.
The core philosophy of Jainism is itself agnostic.
Excellent!
What a wonderful story. You have a great imagination. Perhaps a future career in writing childrens’ books awaits?
Agreed
You just made that story up, didn't you? You seem like the type.
Go ahead and tell yourself that, sweetie. Abortion supporters will say almost anything to relieve themselves of guilt.
@@darkelf6983 What does that even mean
I would really like to appreciate your content because it helped me alot for my psychology exam
We are glad! Thank you. Keep learning:)
Excellent video. In my opinion, socioeconomic middle class people are more prone to this "peer pressure".
does this judgement make you judgemental?
A lot of cult recruiters found that their richest hunting grounds for recruits were University campuses. Universities are full of smart people with not an over abundance of good sense (due to lack of life experiences), which tends to make them rather vulnerable to smart operators.
As to your statement, agreed. They are the people still looking for their way upwards, where upper classes are already there and more likely to be leading the way (Alphas).
Many of the lower level people have simply given up on moving upwards and are just busy surviving. However they are more prone to the lower level get rich quick schemes like a sure bet on the horses or poker machines.
Succumbing to peer pressure is the first step to becoming a lifetime scapegoat to narcissistic abuse.
Thanks for this interesting and really astonishing results!
I would suggest Sprouts to think of opening a platform to teach lessons on psychology with longer videos.
Your videos are all amazing!

Mocked for not drinking alcohol or taking drugs . That poor person is now immobilised and unhealthy just because they wanted look cool in front of their peers. Never be peer pressured into comformity that affect your health. That your true wealth❤️
"It's safe and effective."
It's as if this experiment is still occurring today
I would not conform. I know this due to my teenage years, explicit activities in our middle school were common, and so was peer pressure. And I'm stubborn to a fault, the more aggressive a group or individual becomes, the more I look down on them for using such a primitive form of persuasion, so it gets easier. Not sure why this is.
Oh I am totally the same.
In Asch's conformity experiment, honesty can be likened to holding a royal flush in poker-it's unbeatable. However, speaking the truth comes with the risk of being shunned by the group, especially in more traditional and conformist settings.
So much bad has happened just because people didn't withstand. So why haven't i been trained in school to withstand peer pressure?
People who place their self values on the hands of others or some group identity will succumb to this. They will even condone harassment and abuse if it means they got to be part of such a group. I've seen it over and over again. 🌝
Milgram experiment is another one that shows similar effect, but on a higher lever. It was done after ww2 to show the human morality over authority. However, it shown the darker side of human psychology.
watching this I couldn't help but think about the vaccine/anti-vaccine arguments of the last 18-months

I'm fine with people finding modern life too "materislistic" but they don't pull off any miracles either just tell others how to feel
Amazing explanation 😍😍
I been experimenting with my comments lately 😊😊😊
You're doing good!
There are few people that have their own sense of judgment.
I have a friend in prison right now for 8 years, because this is also how juries work.

Mob mentality, mass formation psychosis.
Values effect perception.
Me who never conformed on a single question, but also never got a single one correct...
In a Soviet documentary called "Я и другие" ("Ya i drugije"/"The others and I") I saw some similar experiments on little kids. In the 1st one the scientist showed a white and a black pyramid to a group of kids, asked them to name the pyramids' colours, and there was a funny moment: after actor kids answered, "Both are white", the tested girl repeated after them, but when the scientist asked her to grab the black one, she did it without any problems
I think this experiment and this phrase "Both are white" (rus: obe belyje) even became a meme
If you are curious, here's the both-are-white part:

Explains the last four years rather well... those who are immune to this kind of pressure have certainly faired better.
Thanks fior the video
bruh yes, conformity i see it quite allot, its crazy to think about no matter how old or young you are how weird you might look doing the wrong thing. you are still willing to do it just to fit in
As an entrepreneur, I decided to use this in my favor. To convince my partners. Thank you Sprouts
That is manipulation.
Does his conclusion remain valid as we age? I know MANY elderly that will stubbornly hold on to their views, true or not, even if everyone around them is saying something different.
Good question!
Maybe it's something about the brain as we age
This Helps you understand what happened during the pandemic.
No I would not likely conform, nor have I many times in actual business scenarios; it is to be noted how difficult it was to explain the truth to them, and finally see their errors.
Hence my expression of derision when someone says 'the jury heard all the evidence'

Swing and a miss, pal. Not why.
Willful ignorance is so rampant I go out of my way to be a contrarian.
This explains the last two years…
COVID AND THE SUPPOSED SOLUTION WAS A GIANT ASCH EXPERIMENT...oh my!!!
Thanks
This shit fire 🥹
An OK experiment, though it is easy to conform or not to when you are surrounded by strangers that you will never see again. A better experiment would be to do it with your current co-workers or whatever group of people you are part of.
This sounds so familiar. Like…in the last few years
I generally fall in non conformist. I've noticed it may not be 100% of the time. As I've gotten older, it's more 100%. There is some subconscious about it. 20 to 30% sounds about right. We see that in society today. Th 15% is really loud, however.
We've been participating in this experiment for the past two years. What was your result?
Somehow, I see the opposite oeffect more commonly in social media it seems that anonymity, negativity and the desire to be right can take priority over conformity.
conformity in social media is low compared to real life. in social media there is no direct effect of not conforming and it has promoted a culture of being right over conforming. however its quite opposite in social settings where an indivual definitely has to interact with a group with opposite belief
"Dare to be Different" That's me!!!!! Hate me if you want, because I don't give a rats azz!!!!! I am different and damn proud of it too!!!!! I don't do what the masses do!!!!!
I'm sure I'll see you in the next snowstorm, snowflake xD
This video explains why families adopt religious beliefs.
Every single person that has ever existed adopts religious beliefs.
I continually read that it was only 50 volunteers. The video says 123?
due to pluralistic ignorance, we most of the time tend to agree with the majority in the fear of missing out...............
FOMO!
I've noticed this as well
This experiment shows exactly why the world looks like it does. The people "in charge" know this & use it as a weapon.
Try to find a therapist in 2023 who will openly contradict gender theory.

Me!
I guess that's how my parents managed to raise me religious...or, at least, an important part of it...
Not distinguishing individuals by hormone levels makes us think we must all be similar. I would be interesting to match this theory with Helen Fisher's discoveries. I bet the conforming group has more cerotonin and less of others.
Great point! We will add her work to our lists of topics to work on
@@sprouts Thanks, I am incredibly happy with your work and recommend it to everyone in my circle, I did not expect an answer from you, for me Helen is fundamental to understanding life's behavior, it would be wonderful to have her theory here, thanks again!!!
@@julioprada Glad to hear that! The video will come - I promise! I try to answer to all sensible comments, but that's not always possible.
Soon we will start monthly meeting with our patrons who want to discuss new topics to make. If you ever get a chance, maybe you us there as well.
But when it was played with no emotional withholding, it revealed what should be hard to miss - many dissonant sonorities that were banned from use by rules of his time, and yet he emboldened their sonic clashing impact with rhythmic emphasis and used them many times and in such way that reveals his approach of neuroscientist to his music almost three centuries prior to birth of this field…
#BachSensoryDeactivationEffect
Yeah, I've witnessed this peer pressure scenario for about three years: a small group of nuerotics suggested a deadly virus would wipe out half the human race and another large group of neurotics agreed with them.
🎯🤣
99% of internet opinions are just parroting what the internet has decided is good or bad.
What determines that some of people stick to the truth despite wrong answer of rest of the group?
Good question? Agreeableness? But how heritable is it?
@@sprouts well I'm not convinced to agreeablenes. It has to be sth else.
At the very beginning of the video, I thought that the lines shown in the second picture were the same length as the lines shown in the first picture. The first of the lines in the second picture is at the back, the second is in the front, and the third is in line with the line in the first picture.
I sir am a Black Atheist Negro of Haïtian descent I think that means non-conforming in English.
man made globle worming
If i get this correctly, the study showed that groups cannot put a significant amount of pressure to individuals, since only 5% were affected by peer pressure.... This is what i get from this, please correct me if i am mistaken, English is not my native language so i might get something wrong....
5% were always effected. 72% sometimes ;)
@@sprouts thnx for your reply! Yes, sometimes, but even then the percentage was significantly low... If i remember correctly, was it 1 out of 8 or 10?? So again the effect of groups affecting an individual remains at a lower level..
Is that what the white and gold and the monochrome dress pictures were about?
These type of studies are especially important today when these social media conglomerates have the ability to create the ILLUSION of public perception via “influencers” in order to alter public opinion. Ie. 2 genders or more
I saw this happen in tiktok.
It is quite messed up.
Interesting
Ok the awnser in the picture is wrong as you look at the single line you see it goes lower then the 3 line one so it should be B not C.
Yes?
I'm not a conformist, I'm a contrarian and an antagonist. The more people that agreed on the wrong answer, the more excited I would be to disagree with them. In fact, the more people agreed on the _right_ answer, the more I would want to examine the other, wrong answers to make sure they're really wrong. I love being the lone dissenting voice in the crowd that turns out to be right. I basically think I'm better than everyone else.
Maybe the responses of the non actors were more a reflection of lack of self confidence than a reflection of a want to fit in.
Want an ongoing active group think experiment experience? Head on over to Twitter. It's been exciting. And informative.
And that's with questions with obvious answers. Imagine when the answer isn't that clear.

I would speak the truth.
Perception becomes reality .........
Does anyone else wonder exactly WHY they do these experiments?
There are FOUR lights!
Most of the commenters here claim to be non conformists.
Yet they all conform to the set trend of identifying as a non conformist.
Maybe true, but if this same experiment was conducted in Nigeria or Japan in that same era, would it have resulted in same outcome? I doubt because years back, children of my time spoke their mind in defiance especially those children that grew up in tougher environment where they have to survive harsh things. Today, I can't say or speculate
