  • In today's video, I'm looking at the Vetex Effects Steel String and the Vertex Effects Ultra Phonix MK2. To say that I'm blown away with these drive pedals is an understatement.
    Here's what Vertex FX says about these pedals.
    Ultra Phonix MKII
    TURN YOUR AMP INTO A D-STYLE AMP
    The Ultraphonix Special Overdrive MKII delivers the blooming midrange and screaming overdrive of the ultra-rare American boutique amplifiers that players have been coveting for decades. This overdrive emulates the expansive midrange and strident cascading gain stages of the D*lightful amplifier this pedal is based on. When you turn it on, it will unleash your guitar's full-throated potential with an articulate attack and smooth sustain that's reminiscent of players like Robben Ford and Larry Carlton. If you're a tone chaser, the Ultraphonix MKII Specialized Overdrive pedal will help you achieve the D-style tone you've been dreaming of that doesn’t require a mortgage to purchase!
    Steel String MKII
    LEGENDARY SSS TONE FROM AN EVEN SLIMMER STOMP
    Players like SRV, Eric Johnson, and John Mayer have been singing the praises of a rare 100-watt 6L6 Dumble Amp, the Steel String Singer, that achieved legendary status in the mid-1980s. And whether you're looking for a taste of Texas sweet tea or a return to Gravity, the Vertex Steel String Clean Drive MkII - now 33% slimmer and with an added trick up its sleeve - faithfully captures that "SSS" magic using an actual Dumble Steel String
    The Steel String MkII is dead-simple in its operation yet matchless in its rootsy mojo. With gain settings below 1:00, the Steel String Clean Drive MkII makes an incredibly versatile clean boost, with a Filter control to dial in how much of that D-style midrange shaping your instrument demands. Above 1:00, the Steel String Clean Drive MkII begins to sweeten your signal with vine-ripened drive characteristics matured in the California sun. Wide open, this pedal virtually breathes fire, with enough juicy gain to take you from Flavor Town well into Brown County. Optional 18-volt operation (adapter not included) nets you buckets of increased headroom - perfect for studio tracking or pairing this pedal with a vintage amp. All the while, true bypass operation preserves your dry signal whenever you don't have the Steel String MkII engaged, which, if you're anything like Sweetwater's testers, is pretty much a nonissue, since you'll never want to turn this thing off. The Vertex Steel String MkII is assembled in California and comes in a rugged brushed metal housing with an authentic D-style Level knob.
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    Ultraphonix has been my fav ever since I got it. It is darker and richer than my others, which I prefer. I was using it along side my tube screamer, but I didn't think of using the Steel String just as a boost (it's been on the shelf). Question, where in your signal path do you like your compressor?

    This pedal is okay. I have it. My main critique would be that it costs 8 times more than it's worth. On top of that, the gain and filter knobs are cheap plastic knobs that do not show you the setting they are at. I do not play in a band so the idea of an "always on" pedal makes no sense for me, I'm in a studio 100% of the time. I'd like to be able to see and recall settings and you can't do that with this pedal other than the Level knob. The sound isn't unique, but I do like it and if I were in a blues band or something like that where I play the same tone all night it's a good choice.

      They added input gain control is the only change, their video says it was to compensate for lower output pickups to get the same reaction from the pedal as HB or PAF style pickups. I guess that make sense as most Dumble ODS users were all using more vintage PAF pickups and not single coil so much at least at the time they were made for the players. Larry, Robben, all big 335 users when they got their ODS amps for example. I have v1 and v2 and with the input volume control off it sounds the same, or can be dialed the same with a little tweak to the pots. I agree though it makes my Tele sound better than it did with v1 because of that extra control.

    Firstly, yes, these pedals sound great. But unfortunately the idea that they are based on Dumble amps is marketing fantasy. The Ultraphonix is pretty much a clone of the Zendrive, while the SSS Clean Drive is based on a Jack Orman circuit design from the 90s. They are good pedals! I like the SSS so much I built one. But you should take any Dumble hypespeak with a grain of salt.

    • @IamMusicNerd
      @IamMusicNerd 2 года назад +2

      Possibly. Since every original Dumble was custom built for it's original owner, no two are exactly the same. But Robben Ford said that he let Mason from Vertex use his original Dumble amps to voice the SSS and Phonix pedals off of. So that would seem to support the claim that these pedals are pretty closely related to the original Dumble tone.

  • @patterry730

    You should consider backing off the verb & delay when demonstrating an overdrive…. Having that halo of effects surrounding the drive really screws up appreciating the actual pedal tone.

    Sorry to be the one to break this to you, but both of these pedals are stolen designs. Mason has a long history now with ripping off other creators. The SSS is two Jack Orman Mu-amps with a Big Muff tone control. The ultraphonix is a Hermida Zen Drive with the voice control changed to a 3k3 resistor. Literally neither pedal was designed by him in any way shape or form.
