- Опубликовано: 1 июн 2024
- Let's learn some basic words in Bahasa Malaysia (or Malay), the national language of Malaysia. I'm not an expert in this language but I have spoken it for my whole life, formally learning it for 12 years-it is my second language while English is my first language.
Note: the letter i is pronounced as e, while the letter a is pronounced as ah.
Also, orange is called JINGGA in Malay, I said Oren by mistake 😅
Do you guys think I should make more Malay language videos? Let me know in the comments below!

Indigo comes from India, and is the colour of blue dye, which was commonly used by Indians until not so long ago. In Tamil, the blue dye is called 'Neelam' (Tamil doesn't differentiate between blue and indigo), and in Malay it is 'Nila'.
Btw, the colour 'Orange' should be called 'Jingga'; and, 'Oren' typically means the fruit 'Orange'.
Its uncommon to see someone actually say "Jingga" to describe the colour "orange".
Just use Oren with a context and anyone will be able to understand you
❤

This can be a good simple starter for making a series of videos to form a library on learning Malay language. I am sure it attracts foreigners who are interested in learning the language and it also serves as a good refresher for some people - like me .... Haha ! 🤭😂😁
Keep it up for the needy of this language, Kev ! 🙏
Terima kasih for the lesson
Good try Kev! Keep it up. There's actually a formal phonetics phonological structure and pronunciation to the malay language, which when you learn them you'll understand or maybe able to teach others better. you might want to look into those for future explanations :) All the best!
I really want to learn!
TERIMAKASIH KEV

Indigo.... the word for indigo is neela. People older than you may remember, we used indigo (bluish powder) in a wash to launder and whiten white clothes like school uniform shirts. Most of the Malay words come from Indian languages. Neelam is an Indian word. The word bahasa itself is bahsha (language) in Indian language. In fact, the word Malay is from and Indian word when sea travellers discovered the peninsula pointed to the hills and said "malai" (hills)...hence hilly country Malaya. Even Singapore or Singapura is are combination of 2 Indian words. Singa (lion) pure (city, village or settlement). Bumiputra is an Indian word. Bumi (land) putra (prince, son)... son of the soil. Manusia (human being) is manush or manushan in Indian language. Almost every other word in Malay is derived from Indian language. Negeri, Bandar, kota, pustaka, raja, etc... The entire South East Asian region was influenced by Indian empires and kingdoms. Majapahit, SriVijaya, Pallava, Chola, Maurya, etc. And much later by seafarers and traders and laskars (sailors) recruited brought in by Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Indian Muslim traders influenced South Thailand, South Philippines and Indonesia and the Malay peninsula.
Btw it's nila not neela
Nila or neela it is the same. Every language is derived from an older historic language ... it is called etymology. The root or origin. People say it in different ways.
Thanks for this.

I really want to move to Malaysia but I need to improve my Chinese and Malay due to school, if you can help answer then can I ask when attending school what would the language be for reading, writing and talking to teachers and other students? Like for an example in the UK we only use English but is it the same In a school in Malay when you only use one language for communication or is it more than one?
Hey there! It depends which school you are planning to go to.
Private/international schools use English mostly for both syllabus and general social life.
Government/local schools in Malaysia use both English and Malay, like 50/50. The syllabus requires both languages based on the subjects, some subjects are taught in English and some in Malay. For the social aspect, it is dominantly Malay, with English as the second.
Chinese is only used for speaking with friends, or if you are in a Chinese school, so if you are having none of that, you don't need to speak mandarin (like me).
Hope this helps with your decision and hope you can enjoy Malaysia!
