My wife and in laws were up in the grandstands (front row), and we were all cheering for Rafa/Riley. We met them the day before and they were the nicest, most approachable pros we met all week long. Joking with us, talking between practice matchups, they were fantastic ambassadors of the game. Meanwhile, Alshon is Alshon, and Jimmy didn't want to be near fans for more than half a second. So when this game erupted, we were SWIMMING in Rafa's amazing "THAT'S OUT CAN'T HIT THAT!" line calls. The "YUUUUUP" on his passing shots. It was just absolutely amazing. I definitely recommend anyone to go watch the full game - but nothing will come close to seeing that game in person.

Being there this week, I NEED to mention this (Quang Duong and his dad)... something for you to look out for. I'm only halfway through the video, so forgive me if you discussed this previously, but if anyone has watched Quang play live, this poor kid looks up into the stands 2-3 times PER RALLY, and after every single minor little mistake. His a-hole dad just sits there arms crossed shaking his head in disappointment. It's truly awful to see. Kate Fahey was trying to get him focused on the game in mixed play "come on Quang, lets go", but it's impossible. As a father, it KILLS me to see a kid in a situation like this. I'm actually concerned for the poor guy. You have to be there to see just how bad it is, but I remember a few points where Dylan Fraser was literally in the wind up to serve and Quang takes a peek up at his dad for some reason, then quickly back to the game to return the serve. It's cra-zy.
You missed a major hook in the Johns vs Staksrud/Patriquin (at 52:58 in the PPA video), video review showed the ball clearly in and the refs somehow kept the out calling despite the clear view, WILD
14:08 This was really a crappy situation. I was talking with Dekel outside the venue that night. He said in game 1 the lighting was just as bad, but playable. Most of the shots Ben complained about weren't even when he was in the shadow section, he was up at the net. I just think it sucks for Dekel and Hunter that they had to play a FULL game (1) in those conditions, then Ben/Colin get to complain and only have to play half a game in the same conditions. I think the PPA should have either made them finish game 2 to make it even, or completely scrapped game 2 and started fresh on the next day. The way this was called, it kind of screwed Dekel/Hunter. But I guess when you are bigger than the game (Ben) you get your own set of rules to follow or break as you choose and the refs will side with you. Totally bogus IMO.
Honestly, Ben was just a whiney little baby all tournament. A really bad look for him - and a really surprising one for me. I had thought Ben was a great face for the sport and Colin was a baby, but this weekend it was the complete opposite. Colin was taking selfies with fans, even hilariously flirting with the old ladies who wanted selfies with him. He was a riot. Ben rushed off courts and hid all weekend. I saw him stiff arm a fan asking for an autograph (albeit at a really bad time), but to not say anything and just walk by, not look at him, and throw your hand in his face... it was really awful. All it takes is "hey, I'm on my way to my next match, catch me after and cheer in the stands for me okay", or some kind of semi-attempt at being a normal human being. Then to see him eye-rolling Colin's mistakes all weekend, and even getting super mad/screaming at him in coverage-mistakes like this... it honestly probably forever tainted my opinion of him. I think he's mega burned out and not having any fun anymore.
Leigh Waters is probably getting the Gucci shirts as a hook-up with the expectation that she wears the clothing during matches in which she is active on the sidelines as a coach. It's basically a free ad for Gucci that will be seen by many on various digital platforms. The shirts are loud and obnoxious though, so they don't blend into the scenery like ordinary Nike, Addidas, New Balance etcetera clothing tends to. Basically, it feels like a pickleball coach that is trying to generate as much attention as a professional wrestling manager.

Gucci may be targeting the loaded retirees who play pickleball and have lots of disposable income as well. There's often a lot of wealth on those courts. How on earth was the match suspended because Ben complained about the light? Was the light somehow worse up Ben's end of the court? Even when they switched ends? Dunno but it feels unfair to their competitors. Would Ben have complained about the light if he'd been winning?
The situation at 1:27:30 is so unfathomably absurd. A ball so very clearly in that there is no discussion to be had, the video is right there on the board and the ref says the challenge can't be honored? Incompetent refereeing in what seems to be a very simple situation.
The problem is that the rules don't allow for referee discretion. I believe the refs can overturn a call during play if they see it, but they can't initiate a video review themselves or change the call after a review of the players don't ask for it. The refs aren't being incompetent. They are correctly following a rule that you don't like.

It also doesn't add up that a ref _can_ affect the ruling of an out/in ball if you ask them directly and they saw it. Connor asked for the review, the review was available and on the big screen, so why the hesitation? This situation requires no serious discretion. The reality of the situation is very clear and is ignored, like out of a parody movie. My concern is deeper than the rules.

But consider: if a player can ask the ref to confirm a call, and the ref triggers video review and then the call is overturned, but the player didn't use a challenge, then what's the point of the challenge system? If that's allowed, we'd have a lot more players appealing to refs to confirm or overturn live calls, which the PPA is trying to crack down on in other cases. Then they'd basically be admitting that it's the ref's job to call the lines, which we know they won't do. The worst case for the current system is obviously when everyone in the stadium knows the call is wrong but they can't overturn it. But there's a case in the other direction where players are yelling at the refs after every close ball and the game stops for a video review every few seconds like the end of an NBA game. There might be a happy medium in the middle -- maybe allowing reviews from the box if the score is 8-8 or higher, something like that -- but until the PPA forks over the money for a fully AI-powered line call system, we'll need some way to limit the total time we spend on video reviews in a game.
Connor got totally ripped off. Everyone can see that the ball is in - we just want the right calls. And truthfully I'm disappointed that Hunter didn't reverse his call and after seeing it on the screen - how about a little integrity. Same with the call Anna Bright made in her match vs Jones & Black - it was clearly in - everyone saw it on the big screen. If this is truly a professional sport that can't happen.

A couple things I wanted to touch on. Is what do you think is the cause of JW And Dylan's drought, they won 6 in a row and then have missed 5 sundays so far. Do you think Frazier is having a hard time keeping up it seems like the common denominator. The Alshon jokes were on point today, keep them coming! Ben's beard is kinda gross, i wouldn't be against like a Van Dyke mustache and goatee but the whole chin strap thing is bad. Do you think third parties (like the team of Close Call Replay) should review the line call challenge instead of Refs?
Not sure what’s up with them - I think they have just played the same consistent style and teams have figured out how to win against their approach I think the refs should do it, but maybe there is a way to have a ref in a booth separate from the ones on court who can do both CC and GS
