Big props for mentioning the "gatekeeping" aspect of the hate for browns. I think thats actually a huge part of it. I am not a big fan of browns, but I also dont feel like I need to post genuine vitriol online about them to newbies to the hobby. Memes are fun though.
I am genuinely surprised by the hate for the switch, lots of people when they first get into mechanical keyboards start with reds or browns. I did way back in the day. I found reds too mushy, I found blues sociopathic, browns to me felt just right. And I have used browns in one form or another since 2007. My dedicated work keyboard that IDGAF if it gets ruined is a Das Keyboard with MX browns. It is elitist and offputting to see so much vitriol and gatekeeping when someone looks to take the next step. If I say I like how browns feel and the community is rude, I wont be likely to go further in the community.
I've been a long time Cherry Blue user and everyone hates on them and swears all other clickys are better. So I took the bait and bought a lot of the highly praised Box Jades and I was super disappointed. The moral of the story is that the 'gate keepers' have no idea wtf they are talking about.
I remember the first time walking into a store and trying both mx browns and reds, and couldn't feel a difference at all. I was genuinely confused what the difference was even meant to be, so I think that being able to feel the tactility comes down to how familiar you are mechanical switches
I started out with blues and quickly realized, clicky is not for me. Then I tried browns and loved them. After browns I tried linear, they are good switches. But the other day I started playing on my browns again, I really missed the tactile bump.
Frankly speaking I believe RGB MX Browns are to blame for the hate. these are made from entirely diffrent material than classic cheries, which then gives a higher pitched sounding, unoticable tactile switch. I am currently using lubed, burnt in retooled browns and they feel just fine for typing, not too agressive on the hand coming from the lighter side of linear gang while having a very soft and sastifying topping out sound.
Its either that or people are hating it just because its popular. Very common amongst enthusiast groups. Linus did a blind test with the common keyboard switches and MX Browns won with flying colours even through a lot of the people there hated it, and of the ones that actually got it right, their attitude against the browns looks biased af.
@@chrischoy9 it won with flying colours because it was the only light tactile switch they had, whereas they had very many different heavy tactiles. They really should have included some others, like Gateron browns.

Congrats on the partnership! I recently got a batch of MX browns from a used board I bought and I believe they're also hyperglides. Apparently the previous owner used the board for about 1.5 years and they were surprisingly smooth even stock. I'm more of a linear user, but I've been on the fence on trying to spring swap them, as well as lube and film them. In contrast, my main board is using L+F Retooled MX Reds, but I swapped the stock springs with CK x Tecsee 63.5g "Slow" Springs and they're now my favorite switch I've used so far. They're not the smoothest, but they sound so great! Prior to the mods, they were probably the scratchiest switch I've ever used. Last, I guess for me smoother doesn't always mean better. I've used incredibly smooth switches before (lubed Tealios) and I didn't like them. But again it all comes down to preference.
Thank you! Right, smoothness is just one of the many factors that affect switch appeal and performance. Those Cherry housings really do a lot of heavy lifting hehehe
Thank you for this video. Mx Browns were my introduction into mechanical keyboards so even if they are not the best switches out there, they have a special place in my heart. Of course i since then moved on to Matias switches and even some white alps (infact i'm waiting for a used white switches alps keyboard to arrive). I also like mx blacks and mx blues which i also have. Although i would love to get a good condition Blue Alps keyboard it's not that easy. If every video of you is this helpful i gladly subscribe.

Incredibly informative and high quality video! You've convinced me me to desolder some browns I have on an old corsair board. Keep up the great content!
Whoa! A very thorough video revolving around a controversial switch. You're brave. For me personally, I've built a board with Kailh Pro Purple switches, which is subjectively unpopular light tactiles in the market. At first, I didn't like them that much, but they grew on me since I have found out that the tactility on Akko CS Ocean Blue switches are a tad too heavy for me (and to put on a perspective, I haven't tried Holy Panda just yet) Plus, the stem on Kailh Pro Purple has a longer pole compared to the one from Cherry MX Brown, thus frankenswitching with the Pro Purples would be interesting due to how a longer stem pole can affect the bottom out sound of a switch. So yeah. If you don't mind, I really recommend for you to try out the Kailh Pro Purple switch (and to replace the stems from Hyperglide Browns with the ones from Pro Purples, because people on Reddit had wrote about how they liked the said frankenswitch combo)
Nice video! I do like the light tactile bump of brown switches, as they are easier to type on then heavier bumps, but they are a little too scratchy for me. I do enjoy using the stem in frankenswitching though!
I genuinely do not understand the hate behind MX browns. Honestly one of if not the best light tactile on the market. From my experience retooled browns sound and feel better than what people consider to be the brown killers (pewters). After a few didnt like the reds or blues, and wanted something that had the physical bump but not the click, well you can guess where that ended up. Since then, I generally bring 4 boards to demo - Reds, Blues, Browns, and my personal favorite heavy tactile with dual-click, which everyone hates but I love. break in period is best taken without any lube applied to the switch. So if you break in like that, and then but a very very light layer of 3203 or 3204 which makes them a great switch for a light tactile enjoyer.
What I don't get is why browns are a meme, but not blues or reds. Blues are terrible, and this is from the perspective from somebody who doesn't hate clicky switches. On the spectrum of clicky switches, blues are not very good. Reds are pretty basic with no special characteristics and scratchy as well, and it's linear enthusiasts who are most obsessed with not wanting scratchiness. On the spectrum on linears, there's nothing special about reds. At least there's a conceivable scenario in which someone who likes tactile switches might genuinely prefer browns, whereas I can't fathom why a clicky enthusiast would prefer blues or a linear enthusiast would prefer reds. This conceivable scenario for browns would be somebody who prefers a lighter tactile with pre-travel. There are not many tactile switches on the market that fit these characteristics.
bro!! i have just been thinking to pick up some mx browns but wasn't sure, since i used to be a fan of very tactile switches but now maybe leaning towards light tactiles and linears.
Used Cherry RED, for years. They were good for gaming. But now I'm typing a lot on my work, so brown are awesome for it. I just forgot about miss clicks and noise level is acceptable.
I think these are normal browns/retooled. I think that because every hyperglide brown I have seen is 5 pin, and on the kbdfans comment section they said that these are retooled.
Love the MX Browns. I'm trying different but keep coming back to what feels comfortable. I have above good hearing but I cannot say any of those so called scratchy or others matter to me. Too much else going on for me to be bothered. But feel is much more important. I could like a little more tactile bump & more weight while maintaining the quietness or low resonance. Do remember the board housing and material you choose makes difference. Drop in a layer of cork or rubber w/ a poly top plate layered w/ denim underneath. Options. What is the gentle next level above MX Bron in feel of a bump & defined activation point? I was thinking MX Tactile Gray!
i think what makes enthusiast brown good is the black full nylon housing, take those out replace it with the regular clear housing and youll get meh switch
Browns are a typist switch and are great for ergonomics. They're so hated that they're the most copied switch. Pretty much everyone offers a brown clone. Even Glorious copied them with the holy panda. The tac bump isn't meant to be an actual noticeable bump so much as enough of a bump to make you feel as if you bottomed out the key without actually doing so. It teaches you to type softer and not bottom out the key every time you press it saving pain in the hands. Browns are legit one of the best switches. After trying several others I can't find a switch that feels as comfortable.
Hows the pinging in retooled MX Browns?? I thinking of getting a keyboard which features MX Browns in a *_non-hotswappable_* format. And because at the current moment I cannot be bothered with desoldering/soldering shenanigans, I'd like to know how the pinging is, stock.
I prefer the new normal version brown switch to hyperglide. The more the north and south are wobbly in the housing, the better the fingers are compatible and matched. As for break-in, break it with a massage gun to get closer to the sound of Cherry lovers, and it's my personal favorite switch among the tactile switches. This is recommended for gamers and typists to use the Cherry Brown Switch.
Thx for the indepth review, started in mech keeb with brown, sold it and only used linear, other day i tried brown again and missed the bump, today im harvesting (desolder work) a brown cherry mx from 2nd hand keyboard i bought from closed down cyber cafe's for cheap to put on my hotswap keeb stock.Lets see how it goes 😅
I listened to the haters and lubed my browns so much that the scratch disappeared. They lost their character completely. No scratch, muted sound. The scratch is delicious and I want some accustic feedback too. I ordered new ones yesterday and I will only swap the springs and film them. No lube, because it makes the browns feel like a rubberdome.
@@CaloysKeyboards Thank you. I'm thinking of lightly lubing the legs of my jelly blue switches, they feel kinda scratchy and have a very deep and unique sound (maybe because of the dual tactile bump)
Go for it hehe. I have some Boba U4Ts and I just did the Gazzew lube method where you just put a glob of lube on the rails and I think I might go back in and lube the rest of the stem, including the legs. I'm probably not a hyper tactile guy 😅
@@CaloysKeyboards This is my first hyper tactile ( the tactility is way above lavender purples and ocean blues ) I think I prefer lighter tactiles as well but not linears. For some reason I get tired when typing on linears. This is the case even when using relatively light and smooth ones with 50g springs
Personally I don't like browns as im a fairly heavy typer and play Rhythm games a lot. I seriously feel no bump at all when I play or type so it doesn't make sense for me to use them ( if I was going to use Tactile switches over my Gat black ink v2s ). As you said its all preference though and a friend loves them. I guess a lot of people don't recommend them becuase you can get much better switches for a bit more or even same price? I dunno. I personally don't understand the elitism in this hobby
If not for this video, I probably would have gone my entire life without buying an MX Brown lol. Budget switches are getting insanely good so, yeah, it's kinda hard to recommend any Cherry switches.
It’s a bit disingenuous to completely ignore smoothness. I mean, pewters sell themselves as a smooth version of browns. People obviously care about scratchiness in their switches.
I didn't ignore scratchiness. I factored it out of the reason that Browns specifically are hated since people love Blacks and those are scratchy too. Like I said in the video, the Browns need breaking in to be good. Breaking in reduces scratchiness hehe
pewters vs browns is the whole nylon vs umwhpe debate, why do people get jwks or retooled blacks opposed to tangerines or green jackets? ultimately "premium" switches will function and sound almost the exact same
I personally prefer clicky switches, and my favorite so far is the Razer Purple Switch. However, I can't use clicky ones at work, so I use MX Browns there. They are the best non-clicky switches I have tested so far. I don't like MX Reds (and all the light linears) at all; they are too easy to trigger and cause many unintentional keystrokes. MX Blacks are a little too tiring for my taste, but I wouldn't consider them bad. I have never tested any other non-clicky tactile switches apart from MX Browns (excluding cheap Chinese ones that I don't count). I also haven't tested any linear switches that fall in the MX Brown ballpark (between MX Red and MX Black).
There are so damn many switches now I can't keep up. Anyone want to chime in on recommendations for a modern "super brown" or Ergo Clear type switch? I like browns but am looking for something with a heavier spring and bigger bump than a brown but keeping the actuation style and lack of hysterisis as per brown/clear switches. So many tactiles seem to be "P" shaped these days which I am not interested in at all.
I don't think that the hate comes from them being light tactiles, it comes from them being very light and the opposite of sharp. They drop only 7 grams of force and takes more than a millimeter; it's the lowest grams per unit of displacement force drop I've ever seen.
Great video! I knew browns weren't that bad lol Would like to see you try some akko switches, they're like competing with the good ol' gat yellows imo in terms of price
Honestly I just hate tactility in general. I'm almost always going to bottom out the switch anyway, so anything that interferes with smoothly pressing the key down is a negative for me.
Love the way you have the bar showing everything that's happening in the typing tests btw! Really unique and helpful
Thank you! That took quite a bit of designing and math to get right hehehe

I've tried pretty much every variant of switch out there new and old and browns feel the most at home to me.
I never had cherry browns but i tried outemu browns and im going to try akko lavender purples to see if i would enjoy bumpier tactiles.
Good luck with it! Have heard lots of good things about those Akko switches hehe
Ohhh thanks for the info hehe
i had a corsair k95 with browns for like 8 years and i loved them. on silvers now and its hard to get used to
I have glorious lynx’s but also bought pandas… how are pandas?
New fan here! I love your vids!!! It inspires me as I build my RLAP
Thank you! Enjoy the build! 😁
Yup those Cherry housings really do a lot of heavy lifting 😊
Browns are a typist switch and are great for ergonomics. They're so hated that they're the most copied switch. Pretty much everyone offers a brown clone. Even Glorious copied them with the holy panda.
The tac bump isn't meant to be an actual noticeable bump so much as enough of a bump to make you feel as if you bottomed out the key without actually doing so. It teaches you to type softer and not bottom out the key every time you press it saving pain in the hands.
Browns are legit one of the best switches. After trying several others I can't find a switch that feels as comfortable.
thank you for the help!!!
I like them, they have a bubble wrappy kind of sound
Hows the pinging in retooled MX Browns?? I thinking of getting a keyboard which features MX Browns in a *_non-hotswappable_* format. And because at the current moment I cannot be bothered with desoldering/soldering shenanigans, I'd like to know how the pinging is, stock.
It's tolerable in my opinion, not as worst as Glorious Panda or Neapolitan.
Congrats my dude, well deserved! Tuloy lng!!!
Thank you! Will do! 🙏🏼
Hello! What lube did you use for the legs and leaf of the Glorious Pandas? Btw great video as always
Thank you! I used Krytox 205g0 😁
I love light tactile browns! But then Gateron has better implementation than Cherry, my new favourite is Gateron Phantom Brown.
What are the keycaps on the GMMK Pro? White, cyan and blue?
Geekark Black on White with colored accents
@@CaloysKeyboards Thank you!
Wow great work it’s awesome ! Browns are great and overall doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets.
It’s gatekeeping. “I spent more and assembled it myself so it’s better than yours.”
i personally like to use browns/mx blacks on ALU plate it just sounds amazing even the mx speed silvers
Glarses would be proud...
Ducky One 3 with Cherry MX CLEARs hot-swappable available❤I can do with all the switches you mentioned but my preference goes by far to clears
Whats bad about scratchy?
Pretty much all of this is down to personal preference. It seems like a lot of people dislike how scratchy switches sound and feel.
Breaking in reduces scratchiness hehe
pewters vs browns is the whole nylon vs umwhpe debate, why do people get jwks or retooled blacks opposed to tangerines or green jackets? ultimately "premium" switches will function and sound almost the exact same
Coming from me who just ordered a keyboard with browns 😅 I was actually starting like them
I personally prefer clicky switches, and my favorite so far is the Razer Purple Switch.
I also haven't tested any linear switches that fall in the MX Brown ballpark (between MX Red and MX Black).
great vid
Good review👌
You can try breaking it in like 200k-300k actuation:) 10 days of breaking in would really have minimal benefits
I dont hate browns but I prefer newer silent tactiles like the Blueish whites
Lube + foam + tape on cherry mx browns = CREAMIEST KEYBOARD EVER!
My keyboard can inly support small pin(otemu switches (brown switches rn
There are so damn many switches now I can't keep up. Anyone want to chime in on recommendations for a modern "super brown" or Ergo Clear type switch? I like browns but am looking for something with a heavier spring and bigger bump than a brown but keeping the actuation style and lack of hysterisis as per brown/clear switches. So many tactiles seem to be "P" shaped these days which I am not interested in at all.
I love when the mechanical switches are kinda noisy.
You left out "stem sanded with diamond sandpaper" from the stats
I don't think that the hate comes from them being light tactiles, it comes from them being very light and the opposite of sharp. They drop only 7 grams of force and takes more than a millimeter; it's the lowest grams per unit of displacement force drop I've ever seen.
Great video! I knew browns weren't that bad lol
Would like to see you try some akko switches, they're like competing with the good ol' gat yellows imo in terms of price
Thank you! Those are on my radar but there's so many switches out and I only have the patience to lube so many lol
Honestly I just hate tactility in general.
I'm almost always going to bottom out the switch anyway, so anything that interferes with smoothly pressing the key down is a negative for me.
You should try dragon fruits imo they smoother better browns
Oh yea, totally forgot about those! I feel like I haven't heard anything more about those after the initial release hehe
Oof even after lubing you can hear the scratch. No wonder why they’re touted as the best switch ever made.
Light tactile switches ftw
I think a lot of these meme against the brown is due to some people being a bit pretentious.
What's your keycaps? :)
Can you give me a timestamp? I don't remember what keycaps I used in this anymore lol
Everytime I pause you. I realize you cannot blink synchronously.
i dont understand why people genuinely believe that the mx brown hate isnt just a meme
I like the browns sound 😭😭😭
Your preference is valid 😊
Thx man
it's all personal preference in the end, always has been ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
