Thank you for sharing how to remove a ignition cylinder that will not turn. Your video was literally the only video that demonstrated this. Seven years later and this vid is still a big help to a lot of us.
I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 truck and the problem with the key not turning in my ignition started acting up about a month ago and has been getting a little worse it seems every week. Today was the worst so I tried some WD 40 thinking that’s all it needed, which did nothing at all to help me get the key to turn the truck on. Very frustrating to say the least. Anyways, I searched RUclips for a video to fix the problem and came across your video. I never got a price from the dealership but figured if I did take in the truck it would most likely be quite a bit of money to get it fixed. I probably spent and hour or so from start to finish, which included taking it apart and then putting all the plastic panels back in place. Everything went smooth and my truck is back to working like new again. The only issue I had was actually getting the cylinder to come out but after playing with it for a few minutes I finally got it to come out. I also had to remove it twice because I didn’t file the cylinder enough the first time. Anyways, just thought I’d share because this solution really worked!! Thanks for posting it.
This was an amazing video! FYI this method also works for 2006 Chevy Express 1500 series as well!! Super informative and on point; greatly appreciated!!
Hey yo good bro.. .I spent 10 mins to watch the video and took me just another 5 mins get the van back on road and Thank you so much. God bless yo dawg
Thank you so much!!! Just picked up a Chevy express with this problem and I was really nervous it was going to cost a lot to fix. Just did your repair and my key turn perfectly now!!!! Thank you so much again!!!!!
great video, ex-mechanic (40+) years, had never worked on late model. this showed exactly how to repair the problem. Also, liked tip about putting gearshift in gear rather than disconnecting battery.
Thanks for the video brother. I have a 2014 Express, and this has been an increasing problem trying to find the "sweet spot" to get my girl to turn over. Will try this weekend
thank you good sir ,, after 4 years of my key sticking it happened ,, could not get my van running today ,, I watched your video which by the way was very well made ,,, I am glad to report that after 20 min of work ,, my van is fixxed .. thank you again
This video showed me exactly how to fix mine except for the part where you remove the cylinder other than that it's a perfect video and worked for me for those that dont know you have to turn the key as if you're starting it then you will feel the pin and push it should come out relatively easily
This advice worked really well for an 2008 suburban as well. I had to file quite a bit and found the key to be part of the problem. I would recommend trying a back-up key to see if things work better before going through the steps in this video. It turns out I had to do both, but ended up throwing out the original key and making copies of the backup. A side effect of filing too much is that I can now pull the key out while the ignition is on. However, this still beats going to a locksmith.
Great video, I've changed these out before and every mfg seems to be different. This video was a big help. I was able to change out the key lock myself and saved money. There wasn't any screws on the bottom of the column which makes me think it had been changed before. I just snapped off the top plastic piece on the column. Snapping it back was the hardest part and of course something always hangs up in the plastic snaps. I ended up using a rubber hammer to get it close enough. Thanks!
found this after i bought the rebuild kit from dorman $80 wasted. I couldnt read the # on the old tumblers and put wrong one in which jammed cyclinder in column. had to use pliers as you did!!!!
thanks man this video save me money I followed your steps one by one and did it myself it took me like ten with the right tools I have a 98 Express 1500
Man you are my hero! I took out my frozen ignition filed the shit out of it and it works like new with only the correct key! Man am i happy! it was just a few minutes ago that i was punching my steering wheel and that didnt fix it. 😂😂 now i can get back to work thanks again bro big time!
You can take a small pick or I used an 16 gauge 2 1/2” finish nail and at the 7 o’clock position you can see the bar that’s catching and you can push it in which is a lot easier than attempting the channel lock method...
I was also able to use a tiny jewelers flat head screw driver to push in that tiny bar to turn the key. Handyman Inside, did you do the rest of the procedure? I fear damaging something that will prevent me from being able to turn the key as it is now.
Thanks man. Was just assigned a Chevy work van and this did the trick! Although I looked for screws for awhile until I discovered the top cover just pops off. Lol. Works great now. Good info👍.
What is that black round plastic he removed from ignition before anything called ?? My ignition is missing that little black piece and makes hard to put key ignition when dark. Thanks
I'm not sure what it's called. I think it's just a cover. They are not sold separately. You can buy a new ignition cylinder and it will come with that cover.
You are absolutely correct sir. There's also a special tool that is meant just for that. However in this video I was trying to show the absolutely simplest way to do it. It's incredibly hard to film that small hole and to explain in detail how to do it.
Hey there. At 3:44 when you turned the key I saw your dash gauges come to life. You're supposed to disconnect negative cable on battery wait two minutes then do as you are. You don't want the damned computer blasting you with an airbag or go into security mode thinking the vehicle is being stolen.
or you could pick the side bar so you dont damage the shit out of everything...i guess ..leave the quality part to a locksmith......signed...a Locksmith
someone tried to steal my neighbors 2008 g2500 and broke that part that you said to push back it's very expensive at around the 3:56 mark on video and he needs to know the name of that part
Yet another ZERO assist, the hospital lost it and it was 2 months before I got out. My key is gone and I need to pull my van away so I must unlock the steering wheel.
Sorry it didn't help you. How ever the video wasn't about your issue. I doubt this will help but I'll make a video for your problem in the future. The job would require special tools, a Chevy ignition phone pick tool (you can also make the tools) but it's easier to drill the ignition out.

Put the key in it. Make sure the block goes down. It's the block does not go down you have to replace the ignition. It comes with a new key.

Shouldn't the battery be unhooked?
That's what the book says.
My book say to push the park solenoid so the new key will come to a stop position
Fuck yeah bro good looking out !
It sounds like you are saying dorks instead of torx. Awesome video though.
someone tried to steal my neighbors 2008 g2500 and broke that part that you said to push back it's very expensive at around the 3:56 mark on video and he needs to know the name of that part
The problem is the key on these. Get a fresh cut key and that will solve the problem much cheaper.
you didn't show lock cylinder actually being pulled out
Good job
I tried this and the head broke off by the key.
