Midland GXT1000 Handheld GMRS Review & Test

- In this vid I go over the basic operations of the GXT1000 handheld radio from Midland. I also do a little range test to see how many miles I get from my house at distance. These are GMRS radios and do require an FCC license (no test required). Easy to get the license and gives you better range than the bubble pack FRS radios you see. It also picks up NOAA Weather channels!

Thank you for taking your time and showing the range. That was very helpful. And I’m looking forward in getting my full 36 miles🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 👍🏽
lol.
Never
I got 2 miles. Fully charged and on High power setting
Great review. Thanks for sharing
very nice radios. I ordered 5 radio and didn't realized it came as two per.. LOL got 10. love the radio when on vacation on cruise ship to stay in contact with the wife an kids on-board that way I can hang at the bar while they do their thing.
Heck yeah! Well, sounds like you got some backup radios now as well.
Anytime you operate any sort of radio transmitter on board any ship you must have the permission of the captain. It is possible these radios can interfere with shipboard electronics gear.

I had mentioned it to a ship officer after reading an above comment.
They told me to not use a couple channels. I believe it was 9, 16, and 19.
I think they said those are reserved for coast guards, ship to ship monitoring, distressed ships and rescue, and something else.
They did say I can go on to those channels however to avoid talking over them.
Nice testing as seemed to work well enough to get you by with camping....Good stuff....
Yes indeed. Will work nicely
Flat earthers gets 36 miles guaranteed 😂😂😂.
I wish I was a flat earther.
lol. Right!
Good one!

Great vid, very helpful. Thank you!
No problem!
Not fair ! Flat earthers gittin better range 💥🤣 nice review 👍 I'm thinking about grabbin the mxt400 for the truck
That mxt400 looks nice. 40 watts to boot!
Thanks mate for this video !
No problem 👍
Cool vid bro! Just got some of these and trying to figure them out. lol
The menus are not the most intuitive.
Thank You, Also I think you will find that if you are outside, rather than in your truck, or in a house, you will get better range and sound.
Also things like high power electric lines seems to have an effect on range and sound.

Really good video,These Are really good tough radios👍 yes I think somebody needs to do a review about these radios,, they can use alkaline Double-A batteries all so,DC charger important.thank you for your channel...🙋♂️

Midland has GMRS mobile radios that are intended to be installed in your vehicle just like any other mobile two way radio. Those radios go up to 40-50 watts. GMRS repeaters can also be had for increased range.
Yes..like this: ruclips.net/video/8pE-svoHD3E/видео.html
Geez , these Midland's been out over a year now , I just bought mine on 4-15-21 .. , I want the wolf call ones 😫💃💃 , haven't tested mine out yet, but I've got mine programmed to where I want the two radios, tomorrow have run into the city grab a few things, and when I'm about 7 miles from home , is when I'll start, then work on mile range. Guess I can record my Midland starter point , and upload it on YT , why not :) Just subscribed to ya

Boy these get interesting at xmas time
Yes for sure

Some people assume that the so-called “privacy codes” keep your coms private. They just prevent you from hearing coms from others on the same frequency who aren’t using the code. Your coms can still be heard by frequency sitters who don’t have a code set.
So true. I cover that topic in this vid if you care check it out and comment on anything left out: ruclips.net/video/p1BooL62Xko/видео.html

Thanks for this review! Glad to see you get 5 miles!! That's great. I just bought the GXT1000 myself too replace my GXT550. What batteries did you use for this test? Factory rechargeable 6 volt, Alkalines, Nimh? Thanks
Hi, I just use the factory batteries it came with. They are Ni-MH 6v
The flat earth shyyt made me loose my breath...in laughter! Good one bro!
thanks
I would like to see a more in depth vid on how to:
Set Privacy freqs
Set Monitor freqs
Understand the difference between FRS and GMRS
Thanks!
sounds good. thanks
FRS is 2 watts max, attached antenna so handhelds, 22 channels. Short range.
GMRS is up to 5 watt handhelds, same 22 channels...plus....up to 50 watts units with detachable antenna (more range!) and 8 more channels as inputs to repeaters. So....if you just need a handheld then an FRS radio is fine to reach a mile to about 5. That’s the simple overview IMHO.
I looked up 2-way radios after an episode of Fear The Walking Dead and all i get are radio videos playing on my RUclips. It makes me wanna get one or two, preferably a 5 watt GMRS. I don't leave the house much with covid around (Los Angeles was hit hard), so don't know where I'd use them, but still want 🤷🏽♂️.
I do wonder why they don't implement USB-C cables to charge instead of the cradles and other old cables. They're everywhere now and fast charge all types of devices.
Ps. Cool video, man. Appreciate the good work, I'm still learning.
Midland does need to update their charging connection ports and also their menus are dated in my opinion. But the radios work pretty good.
Thanks for making this video and what was that call or warning from the FCC???
NOAA (weather alert)? It was a wind warning.
It’s kind of frustrating that Midland advertises these as the “highest power handheld” and 5W and all... but the official FCC docs state they’re only 2.5W. The old MXT1000 was rated at 5W.
3.07 watts when I looked it up on the FCC site. I'm not a GURU on the testing but there is probably some loss between radio power and what it can transmit. Still, I'd like to see the full 5w rated by FCC.
I just got some and I lost signal at 2 miles. They claim 36. That’s a huge difference
I'm not sure even the first batch was 5watts, cause looking at older 3watt+ models weren't even close to getting over 2watts
It works!
It did indeed
Good video. However, coming from LE and EMS/Fire, a mobile is mounted in your vehicle and portable is a handheld, at least in my area.
No kidding.
How does the boom headset work? Have you tried it? Is there a hands-free two-way operation or is the PTT button required always. I noticed the Call Lock button, what does that do?
I haven't used the headsets. The lock button just locks out the buttons from accidental presses. So you can throw it in a pocket or backpack I suppose. I haven't really needed to use that feature.
Mine have VOX operation for hands-free operation. Use the menu button to scroll to the VOX option. Use the up or down button to turn on.
I have a question I bought the midland T60s and I want to talk to my friend who lives about a mile away, the thing is there’s a lot of houses and roads between us. So if we set them to high power mode do u think they could reach each other
Only way to know is to try
Midland makes great radios
I agree!
If you decide to use 4AA rechargeable batteries can you charge them via the included dock charger or do you need to remove the 4 AA bat and charge them separately?
Good question. This base isn't a smart charger so I would be cautious. Best to confirm with the Midland techs before doing that.
Thanks For the video brother. How can I know I’m using 5 w for this device for a long distance usage?
It will have a little tiny "H" top right of the channel number. These radio's are pushing a measured 3.07 watts as tested on the FCC website.
Radio has 3 power level settings. To select the Hi power level on channels 1-7, 15-33 and 38-50, press the MENU button until a "Pr" icon will appear blinking on the display. then press the up down buttons to select H (for Hi) confirm by pressing the PTT button. You can't change the settings for channels 8-14 and 34-37 as they are set to Low power per FCC regulations.
TheRealCobraBurnout thank you very much for your explanation , I thought the 700mAh in the battery . Peace
Can you tell me how well does the VOX function work? Looking for a good radio that has VOX.
I haven't used the VOX feature.
Can I avoid the need for a license if I use it only on the low power channels. It would be nice to have the high power just as a back for emergencies. I understand a person can use high power in an emergency without a license. Let me know if my understanding is correct?
I'm not a lawyer but they are required to sell these as GMRS per FCC. In emergency, all requirements are off if lives are on the line.
Ty buddy

I dropped on of my three in the water and now it give me a low batter message when I know the battery is charged. Any known fixes for this? A reset? I know it's the walkie vs the battery..
Not sure. did you do the rice trick that used on cell phones that get dropped in water? Or maybe use a bag of desiccant with it stored in a tapware container over night.

Awesome set buddy. We have a similar set we use when hunting but not sure what power. Do not work at all with any type of ridge between us.
That is a drawback...the terrain can block the signal.
interesting. i have the walkie talkies version.. tried working with my family in Disney with them, and did not have much success. Need to practice.
Obstructions and terrain seem to be the biggest killer of the range. I was surprised these did as well as they did considering one radio was inside my house.
Thanks for the review. Do I have to get a license to use it?
Yes
The license is $70.00 for 10 years. No requirement except that you not be an agent of a foreign government.

depends on your terrain. straight line its more. My test was with some rolling hills and the other radio inside a house (at the window facing my drive direction)
hey all im really new to this
I bought a pack of these walkie talkies for family road trips not realizing there might be issues with licensing. in the manual it says for gmrs radios before using channels 1-7 and 15 -22 you must obtain a license. I'm wondering if I use channels 8-14 only do I still need a license to this radio. any help is appreciated
I just found this on Midland's FAQs from their website:
"Do I need to purchase a license from the FCC?
It depends. The FRS (Family Radio Service) radio channels (8-14) do not require you to purchase a license. An FCC license is, however, required for use of GMRS channels. To apply for a GMRS license, please visit the FCC website and fill out the application. A license is not required to purchase a radio with GMRS channels on it, however.

@@TheRealCobraBurnout I have gotten some mixed results I was also told that the Midland gxt1000 even though it's a gmrs can be used without an FCC license as long as you only use the FRS channels 8 through 14 , any thoughts?

Personally I don't need the GMRS channels unless SHTF. If it does, I don't think a license will matter.
true...SHTF and no rule of law. You do what you do
What is the power rating on these radios?
Looks like the FCC has a revised report dated Jan 5, 2021 Now its tested at 2.85W and they give it a 2.5w rating I believe. fcc.report/FCC-ID/MMAGXT1050G/5209507 When I first got these and looked it was 3.2 but they have done some type of Filter modification now.
Can I use these to talk to my buddies on their CB radio?
No
AM 27.mhz vs FM 462/7.mhz
Can you charge this without the base?
No. Well, their maybe a battery charger out there that just charges the batteries when removed from the radio but I haven't looked. Its the main knock I have against these radios. They need an update to allow for USB style charging.
Cuánto es el alcance real en kilómetros , saludos
I just purchased these and I applied for my GMRS license. Am I able to scan for other users on these or are they mostly for communicating with another unit in range?
You can scan the channels. Most people using these are communicating directly with a friend or family though.
No license required on simplex only no repeaters frequencys

Personally I think it's Time Midland update the Gxt1000 time to get with the times. Put some USB Charging and lithium ion batteries etc
That would be good upgrades
Can you change the antena
no
Didn't the law change for the frs wattage from a half a watt to 2 watts?
Hi Friend. Yes! Here is the latest from the FCC: §95.567 FRS transmit power.
Each FRS transmitter type must be designed such that the effective radiated power (ERP) on channels 8 through 14 does not exceed 0.5 Watts and the ERP on channels 1 through 7 and 15 through 22 does not exceed 2.0 Watts.

No license required for somewhat lower power handhelds that are “FRS” (not GMRS). FRS work OK for short range a mile up to about five in open areas.....

Midland has great ideas but always manages to drop the ball, somewhere. I believe these radios use a 700 mAh battery, which will not give a lot of high power xmit and use between charges. Something rated at 5W, orveven 2.5W should have a battery truthfully rated at no less than 3X the 700 mAh, or around 2100 mAh, to give any realistic life between charges.
Yes, 700 mAh battery
Mine last for 3 days easy
Starting off good. Now lets see the mobile unit. Flat landers. Lmao
Vid will be up tomorrow. Draw back is having to use one of these handhelds as the second radio. But it did better. I also picked up more random traffic. Sounded like some truckers at one point.
Can u charge via usb.
no
Mobile 2 is Awesome.
How come you say it’s power is 2 1/2 watts when all material from midland and from testing labs say 5watts ?
5 watts
The Midland GXT-1050 is an amazing 5 watts of power, providing a range of up to 36 miles. Designed and created with the hunter in mind, the GXT-1050 has incorporated a "Mossy Oak" camouflage design. The GXT-1050 is water resistant, and durable.
You take the FCC ID (FCC ID: MMAGXT1050G) on the back of the radio and look up the FCC testing and certification. it shows 2.5w on the main page. There is a test in there that shows 2.85w. fccid.io/MMAGXT1050G I don't know if Midland limits the power output on purpose based on battery or if that is the true testing numbers. Same with range. Range is never what is listed. For any radio its based on line of sight and best possible power output, etc.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout thanks for that info

2.5W... Really?! That’s borderline FRS at half the watts of true 5W channel range. IMO there have to better options at 5w out there (2.5W is barely half of the 5W limit) if you’re using GMRS and paid the FCC fee then don’t waste your money on anything under 5w or just get an FRS.
Feel free to post up the options here. Seriously. Thanks

The radios I show in this vid actually test out at at 2.85 watts. The FCC certified them for use at 2.5 watts and certified them as a GMRS radios (not your standard Walmart blister pack of FRS handhelds) . The confusion many have is that GMRS shares channels with FRS and transmit there with a restricted .5 watt setting. But, GMRS still requires a license from the FCC no mater how you slice it. Technically transmitting from a GMRS radio requires the license. But will the FCC know or hunt you down if you *Break Bad* and transmit only on the FRS with .5 watt setting? Doubtful but, have Saul's number ready just in case.
*** Take care good person and stay safe out there ***
