DIY Acrylic Paint Skins and Exciting Junk Journal Project Ideas!!!
If I may, I’d like to take a moment to congratulate you on the success of your book! A number 1 bestseller! WOW! 🎉🍾👏 You **deserve** it Natasha! Today another unique project, one many never would’ve thought of. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us.
Thank you a million!!!
Natasha, I love your fearlessness when crafting and your motto of “just why not”
Edit: My way of finishing work that includes acrylic paint is with a little Dorland's Wax. Just grab a piece of kitchen roll and rub a little bit of the wax across the piece and gently buff it off. It doesn't add shine, it just eliminates the stickiness. BUT that has to be the last step. The wax will resist new layers of most mediums. If a skin I'm making rips, I just get a new one going with a layer of wet paint and lay the torn one on top, either matching the main color with the fresh paint or ripping the skin more and placing it on a new color or colors. Let dry - yes, 48 hours! - before peeling again.
Original comment: It's always such a pleasure to see a new video from you pop up in my notifications. Thank you for all the work you put in on our behalf! Edit 2: I love your ideas for using skins. THAT DRESS ! ! !
i absolutely love the journal covers and the buttons - i remember making acrylic skins lol - time to play again - the Love Letter journal cover is so beautiful - Natasa i would like to thank you for giving us a quick look at Banjo - Like myself i am sure many of your viewers are Furry Lovers - it makes me feel good inside to see him so loved and so secure and so happy - i hope things have calmed down - he is beautiful - thank you again for rescuing him - blessings xx
Tip #1: I usually layer wax paper between skins and keep them in a box.
Tip #2: If only a small skin is desired you can make it on the inside of a lid from things like cottage cheese and it is easy to peel off when thick enough.
Tip #3: Paint a layer of acrylic matte medium, let dry, and then put the colors on top, which make the skin easier to peel off and a bit sturdier.
I haven't made skins specific for using these ways, as usually skins are the result of my dried palette after acrylic painting. It will be fun to make them deliberately.
I love the cheesecloth idea, too, and must try that.
Thank you for all these great ideas for using them.
Thank you ❤
What a wonderful new idea! I happened to peel of a layer of dried acrylic paint off my paint palette, but didn´t have the idea to do it on purpose, like you did. You are so inventive! It´ s a great gift. I´m so happy to have found you on youtube and take part in the fabulous adventures you invite us to. Lots of love, Britta 🥰
Thank you so much Britta :)
You've probably heard this 1000 times but I really appreciate the way you show us what each video is about right at the very beginning. I love your videos and your wonderful ideas. God bless you and your family!
Thank you so much :)
Have been making and saving acrylic skins for years. I keep them on page protectors in 3 ring binders for all kinds of projects. So nice to create the color combos needed or just for FUN.
IF the glue portions of the paint mix is a little high they WILL stick together. Gently use heat gun or hair dryer to warm up for flattening and peeling apart. Too much heat bubbles/melts it.
Spray a Clear coat to finish pieces.
Thank you for the cheese cloth idea!! That is a leveled up method. Great for stabilizing the paint.❤❤❤
Hope things are better with you and the sweet pup.
Me too
I love this idea. You always have such creative ideas and examples. The trick with cheesecloth is wonderful, it really makes it more like fabric. Now I wish I had collected the drips of some paint pouring projects I did with my granddaughter. Thanks again for a fun project!
I think your "mindless creation" is more mindful than you believe, and very much intuitive. And I love how "this sort of stuff" is more specific than "what we do". I so enjoy listening to you, as much as I enjoy watching the creative process. And I am inspired. Thank you!
Bless your heart Natasha! 💞💞💞
Thank you so very much :)
I am inspired every time I visit this channel! Ty so much. Banjo is a sweetheart 🐶😊💗 Never stop " just playing around " 🩷
Thank you so much!
Could you use grease proof paper, or maybe baking paper? Lovely to see Banjo! How is he settling in now? I got a new rescue dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,4 weeks ago and he's going really well.❤❤❤
Rescues are THE way to go!
I love the lady piece. It's awesome! Her skirt is amazing.
I am so blessed to have found you two years ago ❣️❣️ My darling …, you’re the BEST***
My twins discovered acrylic skins over 25 years ago when they were just out of toddlerhood. I think they accidentally spilled paint, or maybe glitter glue, on something unexpected that had a plastic-like/waxy coating (a shoebox lid of some sort?). They ended up peeling off the dried paint/glue and I still have blobs of ornaments that I put on the Yule tree every holiday - shows how long they last. What a great reminder of an old accident, Natasa!
Love this. You never cease to amaze me with all of your ideas. I so enjoy your unfiltered talks to us as well. Thank you again for everything
Oh my Natasa! What a great idea. I need to give this one a try. I love the pink one very much. My next choice would be the one you made with us, beautiful. Thank you for a peek at Banjo. Hope he's doing better. He has a great home & will be loved. Be well, be safe & TYFS
The science teacher in me is loving the space cover! The journal maker in me loves the butterfly. And the seamstress in me loves the buttons. I’m just in love with the concept!!
Hehe I love it, thank you!!
I absolutely love how your mind works... from absolutely nothing you crate masterpieces... Stvarno savrsenstvno!!!
Hvala puno!!!
Fantastic!!!! Again you have the best imagination, keep them coming. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Yes! I've done this, not in my journals but in my mixed media paintings and art journals. Thank you for sharing and sparking my memory.
Love this idea!! You are so creative it amazes me!! Btw, loving your book!!! I’m marking it up like my college course books!! You are the treasure!❤❤
Wonderful video! I make paint skins for jewelry, collages, and the pieces that are thin I allow it to rip organically as I’m peeling and use it on a thin wood piece for a book plate. It’s so addictive lol. I love how you’ve used yours. Thank you for another great video. ❤
Brilliant! That was an awesome project, you amaze me how your ideas just keep flowing. You are a creative genius! Some of us would have never thought of doing something like that. I love, love the one with the feather and the post cards, that one is beautiful.
Your book is on the way and I can't wait to read it. Stay safe!!
Thank you very much!
Like a lot of viewers on here, I also did and abundance of “pour painting” and let the paint run off the sides of the canvas onto a plastic bag that I had opened to catch my overflow. Now, I think back to what a waste….. I could have had hundreds of “Paint Patches. If only I had found you first😂❤
It absolutely makes me want to go do it RIGHT NOW!! lol. I'm currently on another project, however, since there's drying time, I don't see any reason not to pause and make some skins, and then back to my cover and binding. TY DOLL! your such a delightful soul! Luv u ❤
Hehe I love it :)
What a fabulous inspiration! Never made these before, but will definitely be making some now! Hugs 🤗❤️
This is excellent! I've made the exact type skins using nail polish. Once the skins are dry you peel them off the plastic and apply them to your nails. It makes your nails look like they have marbled paint on them. I have a video showing how I did it.
Wow, I have to try that!!!
This looks like so much fun. Thanks for the idea.
You are ALWAYS amazing me, N. I have a list of 86 - now 87 embellishments. I know there are probably 100 more. :D These are so very beautiful. Thank you.
Hehe I love it, thank you :)
I use paint skins for lots of projects, including jewelry. They amaze me😊❤️
I like the cheesecloth texture!! Could you paint a skin on an embossed surface for cool texture? I may try that!
I just love your sound effects 🫶🫶🫶✌️✌️✌️🤘🤘🤘🐾🐾🐾
I just received your book. What I really love about all your ideas is that you don’t need to purchase anything. You find beauty in everything. Using colors and tags that I would not use together, but you make them look perfect together. Love your work!!!
Thank you so very much!! Please leave me a review on Amazon if possible :)
Words can't describe how amazing this is!
I can’t wait to make and play with paint skins! Thank you for being so willing to share your creative ideas and projects ❤
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching :)
to prevent mine from sticking to the other side i'm planning on using vellum or the faux rice paper I made using your tutorial (I use quite white napkins and so they have a lot of transparence to them). I'm also hoping because those are smooth surfaces there wouldn't be much for the acrylic to stick to
I love the way everything's a sensory experience for you. Even your voice is a sensory experience!
I made skins years ago for jewelry. Hasn't thought of them for years! So fun, and beautiful projects as usual, Natasa!
I absolutely love your creativity! You give me great inspiration!
I love your videos and creativity, all your ideas are so inspiring, you’re a perfect teacher and producer . . . but boy-o-boy do I have a huge crush on Banjo!!! ❤ PS: Your book is absolutely wonderful!
Hehe thank you so very much!!!
First, I have to say - I LOVE your book, and congratulations on making Best Seller! Second, I have to say that your journal cover is stunning! Especially for doing it "on the fly"! You are SO talented 😍💖🤩
Thank you so much! Please leave me a review on Amazon if possible :)
Thank you Natasa for sharing your creativity, humor, inspiration and kindness. I GREATLY appreciate it!!!!
Wow, thank you so very much, this is hugely appreciated :)
Got my new set of acrylics out and I'm doing some. Did not know about this process. Thank you for sharing. Amazing!
That's the way! Have fun :)
I got some paint skins from my artist friend who does paint floats projects. I used as a collage or on a pocket. Instant beauty. Those are amazing
Thanks for sharing your idea
That is awesome!
Oh my I knew pain could skin but never seen this b4 and using it this way how absolutely fabulous guess I will be trying this out thank you ❤
Awe! Banjo is precious!
You asked. I made something similar in the past using napkins that were already dry after applying to them diluted with water white school glue. The napkins were thin, sturdy and textured and I just painted them the fun way. But after that I forgot to go to town with finished product. 😆To go to town is what I learn from your channel and for that thanks so much!! I 💌 the 🪶!
What a fun and slightly messy project! My favorite kind.
Looks like so much fun! I am definitely going to try this! Thanks for showing fun unique ideas for our journals!
Wow love these, sooo cool 😍❤️ can’t wait to give it a try 😊 thank you for sharing😘🇨🇦
Have fun!
Have you tried adding a little wood glue to the paints to make it more stable when youre using it ?
The cheesecloth texture reminds me of snake skin. These skins would also be a great material to use in miniatures. I have so many ideas now! As always, thank you for the tutorial and for the inspiration.
What fun!
That would be cool!
Wow! I love all the colors you used in making the skins. I would have never thought about doing that! You really have inspired me. I don’t know if I would ever try it but I’m glad you did to really show me what actually can be done! I really love the colors on your cheese cloth skin! Beautiful!
Thank you so very much :)

I look forward to your videos Natash! You explain things so well and are a "master junk journal artist"!! ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO!!!
Cool idea!!! I accidentally peeled up paint skins (blobs) from my wax paper and wondered if they could be used. But I didn't think hard enough and threw them away! Now, I know what to do! TFS🤗
This is one way of using up old paint and then get newer paint!
I’ve used acrylic on the tyvec paper mailers from PO and when you use a heat gun it bunches it up like you did that one piece. Makes pretty jewelry!
These skins are a good versatile way to use for a LOT of things....love the dress on picture idea!
👍❤️BFE
Dear Natasha 😍This is why I love your channel. You're old school! No fancy stuff! And if you don't have a spatula, I use the cheapest plastic knife available. Tip, baby powder or talc does work to help the paints not to stick. I learnt this from Jennibellie and Helen Wells, over in the UK.🇬🇧😁 Happy crafting, neighbour , hugs to Banjo🐕🇦🇺💕
That looks so relaxing, spreading those paints out! Hmmm, I bought all those little bottles of paint last year....😉
How to keep the cats out of my drying paint skins, though, is the question.😸
And, how do you store them, without sticking together? It's humid in Illinois, USA in the summer thanks to the corn growing around us.
Hello, Banjo! So, you're helping mom with her artwork?
Oh my goodness!!! I never would have thought of this! Watching all your ideas...I'm completely inspired!! Curious...any thoughts on if the paint skin could be run through our die cut machines or embossing folders? The ideas are piling up in my mind...you always provide great inspiration!! Thank you so very much for sharing.❤🥰
Girl!! I love the way your crafty brain thinks. I love this idea. I've always played with the paint skins that are left after painting but never thought to use them like this. Wow. ❤
What a wonderful way to use up old paint. The one with white, black and gold is simply beautiful!
Thank you so much :)
Gorgeous, also looks like a great texture. Beautiful, made from well not much, things you probably all have the majority in your stash. Worth a play for sure. Your book is on its way, I had to wait ages from pre order (UK) can’t wait. Xx🦋🦋
Totally inspiring! Love the one with the post cards the best!!!!! Beautiful. Thank you❤
Hi Natasa, thx for this amazing idea! What do you think: could I use a silicon mat, instead of acetat for making this acrylic lovely thing ?
Have a nicy weekend whith your dears and your cuty doggy!!!!!
🙋♀️👍
Leave it to you to make something cool. On the black gold skin I pictured a cool backdrop for Halloween. Endless possibilities! TFS ❤
This is a wonderful idea. I'm so glad you showed us not only how to do this but also how to use this. Thank you.
Thank you so much :)
Lovely projects. I just spread glue with my fingers, so I’m peeling dried glue. Takes me back, when we would do that in school. You have endless ideas and inspiration. And I thank you.
Hi Natasha from Texas… what a cool idea!!! I’da never thought of this idea!
I’m soooo excited!!!! My copy of your book is on its way to me!!! Can hardly wait!!
I just love you to pieces!!! Find someone to give you a big ole bear hug and pretend it’s from me!!! 🙃
Your nails are the same color as mine!!!! Brilliant minds… the say… lol
Keep up the great vids!!! And take care too.
A very clever idea. Oh, I went to Barnes & Nobles to buy your book two weeks ago. They didn’t have it. Yesterday, I called to see if they got it in, still not at their warehouse. She said call back again.
This Barnes and Nobles is in San Mateo, California, USA. I felt I needed to tell you. I have no idea how long these things take, however, I think this is useful info for you to know. Carol from California
I have been making skins while on vacation in beautiful New Mexico. I have also been collecting bird feathers, pine bark, small branches, etc. to use with the skins and throughout a journal. Do you have a tutorial on preserving natures bounty or know of someone that uses such in their journals? The bark is about the thickness of 80# card stock and will tear easily. Love your book! As someone said, it will become the Bible of journaling. Thanks in advance.
Neat! Could you run it through an embossing folder to make faux woven or croc? Or spread the paint ON the embossing folder? Congrats on your book! Still need to read my copy! 🙃
Wow your videos are a ton of fun to. watch and the ideas are so much fun and unique!
Thank you so much!
Haha ha, you make me laugh, Natasa - you're so cool! 😆 GREAT ideas! 👍
/Ditte 🤓 🇸🇪
I just love this process. So beautiful colors. Do u think it would work on old photos that aren’t liked? Thanks for sharing. Nice work❣️
I imagine you could use any thin/fine fabric. I'm working on a shoe theme journal, now I can use a skin to make a shoe shape. Thank you. I absolutely love your videos. ❤❤❤
Brava!! There is a project that I have wanted to create, but was not sure how to go about it; an hour ago, I watched Ceri the Crafter's latest video and the technique he used is one that will help me. Then, this video pops up and in the first few minutes, I realize your technique will give even great detail to my project. So, thanks to you and Ceri, i can now tackle my dream. Thank you!!
Such a great idea, I have alot of acrylic paint to experiment with. Banjo and you are adapting well to each other. He's found home ... he said "hi mom" back😊
Interesting project. I think I'll have to play with some paint. 😊 TFS Hope you have a great day. 🌞
I’ve made these skins accidentally and threw them out. lol Next time I’m painting I’ll try this. Thank you for the inspiration.
That's really interesting! I really like the dress, it has something of impressionist painting a la Monet, for example. That's where I like the connection with the material the most. The buttons are great too. Buttons always work 😅
Thanks for the great inspiration and best regards from the German Baltic coast 🌾🐟🐚
Oh my gosh! Why do we think that’s soooo amazing?❤ idk but WE DO !! Love love love these ideas!❤
Before watching this video I planned to repaint and use a couple old poured paint canvases for journal covers. I think I'll just "re-pour" 😊.
Ingenius idea! Love what you do with your creative mind. Thank you for all you share with us. Great way to use up the way-too-much paint my grandkids put on the pallette.
I love this! Have you used acrylic ink in collaboration with paint? The colors are vibrant & stay vibrant as theyre made with pigments.
That journal cover is amazing! Thank you so much for showing us your imagination working in the wild!
Thank you so much!
Your book that you made - Translation is "the word of God" and the other one - "the reformer" - so something to do with the reformation. Font is the classic german font used prior to WW2. Anyway - maybe you want to use it for a journal on spiritual reflections as a theme. God bless! And cool idea with the skins.
Adding a little bit of good old white school (PVA) glue will probably add an extra bit of strength to your skins, while still keeping them as flexible and easy to work with.
The stickiness could be the result of the age or quality of the acrylics as polymers and acrylics don't always play together nicely but that's the fun of using what you have on hand and Reclining...
First I did my first skin while you chatted away to me,
Second thankyou for being amazing and third I am so excited, I have your book on its way to me.
Hello Natasha, I really like the simplicity and practicality of your ideas❤. I would love to see your ideas on how to make embellishments out of discarded things or where to easily procure them 😊
I have made skins before. They sew fun. Last time I did not make any thing with them. Now I have som ideas. Thank you! Very lovely.
I’ve never made acrylic skins but in elementary school we used to color the top of our plastic school supply box with marker and pour our school glue on top to make something similar ❤ I’m excited to give this a try!
Cool technique and great results! Will try it! Banjo is adorable! 😇💖🙏🙌
Beautiful idea. I have bottles and bottles of acrylic paints that are drying up and going to waste. Thank you for your creativity.
Oh my goodness my grandchildren will absolutely love something like this! Great idea!!
I’m so inspired 🌱💛
We used Premixed pouring acrylic and it worked great. Perfect consistency.
Another brilliant idea. I’ve made lots of jewellery from skins but never thought to use them in my journals
I really enjoyed this video , who knew? I will be trying that at some point. Can I just say how sweet your doggie looks, I’m so glad he has a good home now. I miss my dog so much , so I love to see other people’s doggies .
