🚨 Just a thought: The prior recently replaced alternator, only three months old, should have come with a warranty from wherever your prior mechanic purchased it. Usually parts come from nationwide supply houses ie: NAPA, O’Reilly’s, Advanced Auto, Auto Zone, etc. The shop you just went to should have given you a credit for the part or given you back the original alternator for you to return for a full refund. I always verify where my parts are coming from and have the mechanic notate on my bill the warranty from the parts store along with the shop’s warranty being offered. 🚗

    • @wesleydavisson7805
      @wesleydavisson7805 Год назад +4

I worked for a nationwide parts retailer for close to 10 years and the process is not just that easy. First the transaction was made between the original mechanic and the parts store. In that case the original mechanic would need to be doing the transaction for the replacement with the supporting paperwork unless at the original store in which it was purchased.

Regarding the on load off load remember there is a DC to DC charger in your solar system. So even an off load test will not be correct as it still is on load. To get a correct test you would have to use the victron app and turn the DC to DC charger off.

So sorry you're having all this RV trouble! Hope your time at Ausia's place helped - and that all is fixed and fine. Tig is SO CUTE!!! Nice to see Opie and Tara are doing well with the new addition. You are such a great pet parent, Eric!!!
Now, paying it forward here -- I was told long ago by an experienced dog parent about this, and it has been invaluable, so I thought I would share with you (if you're not already doing it) ....
It's training Tig to know "pee" and "poop" - this is REALLY HELPFUL. Every time he goes to do his business, say these words repeatedly as he is in the process followed by lots of praise. My dogs all learned fast that I was telling them they needed to pee or poop and I guess Pavlov was right.
As they got older, they could do their stuff almost on cue. GREAT help when it's raining, snowing, icy, high heat, etc. Seriously wonderful.

Could be just the battery going bad- had it happen to me. Mine just went like someone turned off a switch, driving at night, lights and engine just died. Learn some wrenching skills- it is really not hard swapping out things like starters and alternators- it's just step by step. There are hundreds of how to RUclips videos, that if not for your specific vehicle, will at least show the main things. Plus there are online diagrams and forum posts for your specific vehicle for sure. Just think of it like big Mechano, because it is pretty much that. Invest in some good basic tools- socket set, wrenches, etc- and a volt meter- you can test the alternator is charging the battery as well as the state of the battery. Also, you're lucky you have the generator- you could at a pinch run off the lithium set up with that battery charger you had while driving- just work out the cable management to be safe as well as a way to cut off the power from the cab.

If it is alternator, first thing to do is turn off dash AC and every other electrical load. Next to take a multimeter red lead to output side of alternator and black lead to ground like chassis to check for alternator output voltage. DM me if you still need help. YOU NEED A MULTIMETER. You could save so much $$$$ and learn. Motortrend says alt should be 13.9-14.8 with ideal 14.2. Probably crap quality alternator but take 10 min and trace the wires for crewing breaks or loose connections or loose ground. It might be something simple.

Eric, check for corrision in your battery cables. I don't mean the connectors but the actual cable itself. See if you can peel/roll back some of the insulation and see any signs of corrision. I had a car burn through two alternators in a relatively short period of time. The battery cables, under the insulation were stuffed with green corriosion. Mechanic figured that the resistance of the battery cables was now so high it was making the alternator(s) work overtime and burn out. No problems after the swap. Probably not your problem, but it's easy to check.

I know from other blogs, you are past this problem now. Great. Sometimes it can be as simple as a bad battery. We have had both, alternator go out (after 8 years), and later bad batteries. We had the luxury of running the generator to keep charging the battery as we drove. One or the other can cause all sorts of symptoms, can be very frustrating. I did have my alternator rebuilt by an expert, who put in all the good stuff, and I carry it as a spare. Actually, I carry lots of miscellaneous electronic spares, probably more than I will ever need, but just in case.

Some full size vans allow a dual car battery backup install in the engine compartment. You could consider adding a second car battery if that van has the space, and with a good auto mechanic could consider adding a switch that puts the second battery on your RV / solar circuit. Also, some full size fords have space for a second alternator which you could install as a backup but that gets more complicated. Other RUclips people have covered the how to on these topics.

Eric, My Tioga did the same thing. After months of Arizona heat running the RV AC while driving and having intermittent electrical issues like you I found the culprit. There is a junction box back where the shore power cord connects with the coach and chassis batteries. The wires inside are not heavy enough for the load you are putting on it. They have burned up and will catch fire if you continue driving it when it acts up. I was in Laughlin and luckily coasted down the hill!

Sorry your having a bit of trouble . Do you CHARGE your house bank from the alternator?? If so that is why your killing the alternators. Lithium can take so much charge so fast it overheats the alternator, you need to add an DC-DC charger to slow down the charge to the house bank. Alternatively you should have a relay with a temp sensor to cut off and then reconnect the alternator when it cools down, this is the cheaper option and worjs very well, allowing you to charge at full speed till it gets too hot then waits for 20 min or so and reconnects over and over till the batt's are full or youve done driving CHEERS AND SAFE TRAVELS Steve h. TIG's SO CUTE ENJOY

As you know Eric, factory Ford parts are best if you can get them. But if you have to buy the aftermarket alternators, choose brand new and not rebuilt, as they only replace what is needed in them and they soon fail after there installed.

Considering your recent findings of rodent droppings I would have a good mechanic go over the wiring harness with a fine toothcomb . quite possibly there could be some damage in the harness between the alternator in the computer. I wish you the best of luck getting this sorted out and now you know why so many RVers In the desert Southwest leave the hood open and some sort of light on under the hood and around the bottom of the vehicle.

Wow, I do worry about that when we’re traveling. You’re so lucky to have so many friends. My current 10 month old dog still isn’t lifting his leg. He has started marking, with several short pee stops along the way - which is a pain. It was so much easier when he just got it all out at once. I had a 11 year old German Shepherd who never lifted his leg. Didn’t mark either. Maybe it has something to do with when they get altered. 😻😻🐕‍🦺

That thumbnail. I’m really glad your engine didn’t catch on fire. Dang I was worried when I saw that! I’m sorry that you had problems, but I’m glad that you were able to find sanctuary at Aja’s. I would be melting down over those problems with the engine myself! I know you’re going to end up going back to your base camp after this, but at least you’ll be able to stop at the Grand Canyon and get your Harley shirt. Your puppy is sure a good traveler! Of course he has his sisters setting such a good example! Safe travels!

I felt your pain, Eric. I was stranded in Tucson for 2 weeks waiting for my husband to meet up with me from BC, Canada. My Toyota MH started making weird noises and the place I took it to figured it was some major issue. Hubby said, just stay put (thank you Desert Diamond Casino!) and I'll take a look when I get there. Thankfully I did! It was just a fan belt with a nick in it! I was so relieved!
So great to have friends around to help you. The best made plans of mice and men.

Maybe the reason why you are having so much problems with your alternator is it don’t have enough amps to be able to handle everything and that might be why you are burning it up and it wants to stop charging. Just a thought. We had the same problem and when we got one with higher amps we stopped having the problems

Here is a guess for you. If you have a large bank of lithium batteries, your alternator may be trying to charge too many batteries and never getting the chance to cycle off of charging. Try this: Be sure that your lithium batteries are charged fully before you drive. Maybe find a way to NOT charge your lithium batteries with your alternator. Only charge them with your generated or solar. .

Early 2000's Ford alternators don't have a high airflow fan inside leading to the voltage regulator overheating, aka burning up, if you can get it there's a pulley for them that includes fan blades like older alternators had that will help to prevent this issue.
Although the regulator is made in China and can still just go kaput for no reason.

Was wondering if you were aware that there is a inability to charge lithium batteries with your alternator with out a dc to dc charger .. it will limit the output from the alternator and keep it from burning out.. just thought since you new with your lithium batteries on board

    • @JDawgVideos

Yes. If the alternator is charging the house lithium batteries, then without a dc-dc limiter, the lithiums will draw more current than the stock Ford alternator is designed for.

You have all that stored Solar power on the house side. You can go a long way by just plugging the car charger into the "house" AC circuit and let that charge the van battery. You should never be "stranded" unless the bearings on the alternator are falling apart. The ignition to run the engine is not that much. Don't run the headlights or radio and use hand turn signals.

It will be fun when he is a bit bigger and can sit on the couch while you are driving and keep you company. If you had a seat next to you he would sit right by your side the whole time you're driving.

Eric, do you have a LI=BIMI 225 battery isolator manager or a DC to DC charger between the alternator and your lithium batteries ? If you don’t you’ll keep burning up alternators running Lithium, especially with more than less. They pull much more than lead acid and overload the alternator. Hope that helps bud

I suspect a bad battery. I have had many batteries not survive past 3 years. Most are made on production lines, assembled by robots, so quality inspection is very poor, and only functional. Minor QC item which a human tech would recognize that may lead to future failure, are not performed.
Although i wasn't there to diagnose.
Easy voltmeter check the alternator output, idle, and run fast.
A slipping belt will give poor charge, thus the battery drains.
Could have been that the former replaced bolts were not torqued properly, thus alternator moved, loose belt, low voltage, battery drains, especially at freeway speed, with high drain items operating.
Rebuilt alternator sometimes the internal voltage regulator fails. Best to buy new OEM alternator if budget allows.
Glad you are safe. Travel with many gallons of water!
