I've played both the Ibanez (owned one for a brief period before selling) as well as the early iterations of the Ernie Ball Music Man JP6, and the Ernie Ball JP6 >>>>> Ibanez JPM. Just my preference of course. I'm not a fan of the way the Ernie Ball Majesties look, though.
@ATX0705 Yeah I owned a JP musicman two actually. They play great sound great...but the if ibanez would have used a wizard neck instead of the what was it viper..or nitro? It would have been better. I still would rather have the ibanez
I'm primarily a bass player, but if I were to ever pick up guitar seriously, I would want to play in the style that Petrucci portrays in this video. All of the licks and runs he plays here sound very inventive, unique, and in good creative taste. I would think the chords in the beginning were pre-determined, but I'm not sure about the rest; if from :45 and onwards is improvised, then I've gotta say, that's ridiculously incredible.
I love the way that John plays what fits and is more concerned about contributing to the band than being a guitar hero... even though he is a master of phrasing. He is an incredible musician and his playing is spot on.
This solo wasnt tabbed out in the book i got with the DVD just the first 12 bars or so of that main riff. Anyone know where to get the solo? Was it supposed to be tabbed out or no...im assuming he just was improvising the solo and wants you to do the same...but it would still be a cool solo to learn.
Go to ultimate guitar its rock discipline guitar tab for guitar pro, its got everything! the backing clean idea behind with the main riff and the solo, check it out i think its pretty spot on too
Yeah it was 96. That was east west era. I cant believe theyve been under WMG that long. All these companies including roadrunner are owned by warner. No other band has gotten as much freedom or gone as far as DT with this company. I guess even warner has a good side haha
That freaking guitar sound man! How do you get that sound? I have pedals up the wazoo and they all sound like crap. Why can't these guitar pedal companies create a multi-effects pedal that mimics the sounds of Petrucci, Van Halen, Satriani, and Vai without us having to fiddle with the knobs for years until we get a half-decent sound?.
@JasonAThornberry My friend, I am afraid there are more than 3 Justin Bieber fans. But let us not concern ourselves with that. Let us simply enjoy JP at is surely one of his greatest moments in tone and style.
Its the music man guitar, Its much more better for metal and the times, You have to remember even tho im not old enough to remember much of it i listen to it, No one listens to anything that doesn't say excessive cuss words or is Death metal. Dream theaters gotta make a living some how :/
I disagree about this being his best time but, i will was his most progressive time, he's found his area (METAAAL!!!!) and he is now progressing that genre. I miss the old stuff sometimes though. I love the classic dream theater. And yeah elektra wasn't the best label. Or were they east west here? Dunno! JP is awesome though lots of talent and FEEL ;)
i miss the old petrucci whit song like this......and the intro of rock discipline, images and words......
Best sound Petrucci ever had...
I have no idea why he has thumbed down the Picasso... so iconic.. wonder if he even still owns them. His playing back on this day meant so much to me
Probably..., only him can this eccentric gear be tamed.
To put it differently, that guitar wouldn't have been selling very well.
I'm very often wondering the same.
Such a perfect sound.
Round and agressive as you wished it to be.

I disagree.
One of my all time favorite Petrucci solos
agreed...everything is perfect here, the riffs, solos.
Man, his lead tone in this part is so friggin' good!
I prefer this John over the new one..........no idea why
More feeling and a crisper tone imo
Man, his lead tone in this part is so good. And the phrasing is perfect.
aha love this and how he just smiles like hes so happy to play the guitar
He had a unique look to his old signature Ibby.
He even had signature outfits too
his phrasing is brilliant
The phrasing is phenomenal

those odd time signatures are so perfect!!!!
I love this! Petrucci can write and phrase amazingly and solo perfectly.
Petrucci return to Ibanez please.
He will never.....let him play ernie ball
it's not abt the guitar
So very kings x like
Simply amazing!
5/4 beat is basically hard beat. But this beat give a mysterious feelings. I like this example 31.
I love your style of playing !!!!!!
This song is AMAZING!
awake and images and words dream theater kicked ass, newer albums only train of thought and metropolis part 2, this petrucci phase rocks

simply the best
I remember when i saw this rithym for first time, it blowed My mind.
I too have been saying that for ages! im glad im not alone in this haha
I know that, I'm just saying that even he is not endorsing Ibanez, I bet a lot of people would buy this guitar... Still his Music Man kicks ass
Damn this is good!

mm....thank you!!!!!!!!
you dont know what your saying son, its all in that jpm. best ibanez ever
This is probobly the best ive ever heard still. just fucking awesome.
JP nuff said!
agreed. I can see that working out well.
so true
his playing now is so much different..i like it better the way it is in this video
I Agree too!!!
TRUE!
They are not in production anymore. eBay has a few left for around 2000. I've had the chance to play one, they are soo awesome.
I wish they were that much now😭😭😭12 years later and they’re about 5 grand and nowhere to be seen
i would sell my soul to be able to play this, even if it was the only thing i could play
@sigiF1 It was available when I first started playing, like back in '98. He doesn't endorse Ibanez anymore.
This also reminds me a lot of the menu music in later Virtua Fighter games. Needless to say, it's cool.
5\4 makes him happy

@MOBsta Imaging I agree man! 13 years later and I still never sat down to tab it out. I could now though easily.
agree!!!! ;)
true
This video actually has over 2 million views but 99% of the viewers died at 1:54 to 1:58
I didn't know John Petrucci wrote the Terran music for Starcraft 2.
I have the DVD but cannot for some reason find where this is on the DVD. Does anybody know where it is?
This song is sick!! Too bad it's not on an album
GOD|!!!
@liquidtension94 ive been saying that for years! This petrucci smokes new petrucci
@aaaaasssss22 LOL, best call.
Yeahh shawn lane feels improv ☺
damn, i dont even remember posting this hahaha but i still agree 90's john was epic
anyone knows where I can get a backing track of this?
Were can i buy a similar guitar that he uses in this video?
I recorded the first riffs 2 and looped them so I can improvise over them, wich is the almost the same thing.
cheers!
*nod to the beat, nod to the beat, nod.. ow shit - try again, nod, no... fuck*
@JRBain7 Soooo Seymore Duncan is better than EMGs right?
@TheBarrelMan2 Nice combo
ibanez should put this guitar as a signature guitar... i bet a lot of people would buy this sexy guitar, including me
you've got the full rock discipline tab on ultimate guitar for gp4. awesome song though!
@kalmahman48 you can buy replica ones. I think the guitarist from Bad Salad has one.
Noo, the thrill would be to have him only play it live. That would draw so many fan's attention.
Get PUMPED FOR BLACK CLOUDS AND SILVER LININGS!
1:58 - Malmsteen used that exact lick somewhere haha
@Satansbitch101 I dont know much about Dream Thater, what albums would you recommend for someone new to the band?Any input would be helpful. Thanks
@Xuvial no i don't. so please, feel free to explain it.
Go to ultimate guitar its rock discipline guitar tab for guitar pro, its got everything! the backing clean idea behind with the main riff and the solo, check it out i think its pretty spot on too
essence of prog
Hi I'd few questions before the ultex jp signature pick, which jazz iii xl or smaller one was john using ? And now is he using the ultex or primetone?
John Petrucci Ultex Jazzlll It has NYC on it and it is black
magical... im wondering why doesn't it say LEGENDADO in the title
What is his setting? Can anyone tell :) Would this setting rock with a ESP Horizon 2 guitar?
@TheMattTrivium I don't think you got the "Psycho Exercises" reference, bro.
how does petrucci come up with Beautiful solos? :D
Wanna learn how to play this? Check out my site for the solo tabs!

Learning to play this isn't the hard thing, whereas getting it to sound like that is impossible...
@sheldon227 okej thats quite much, ; )
what happened to this john petrucci?? his new stuff doesnt come close to this! Rock on Old John
@JasonAThornberry My friend, I am afraid there are more than 3 Justin Bieber fans. But let us not concern ourselves with that. Let us simply enjoy JP at is surely one of his greatest moments in tone and style.
what is it

He fucks up at @2:00
Having said that, this is a great passage, and he is one of my favorite and most inspirational guitarists!
something's wrong, youtube is only counting my views!
@TheSonsofHorusx you mean, "symphony x has a song that sounds like this."
@TheBarrelMan2
Hand-wired by Tony Blair. He didn,t have to ask him twice.
petrucci ranks up with malmsteen i believe!
the sound is amazing....what I must have for this sound? AAAAARRRRRR!!!!!
excuse me for bad english....

@TheBarrelMan2 Are you calling Batio a guitar noob? like seriously? He's probably the most _technically_ skilled guitarist of all times

Yeah, they want you to come up with one.
@sheldon227 Around 2000 what? ;P
Yeah, but i dont think i can afford one
who's 1?
i was thinking LTE
@MetallSonata Looks like someone didn't get the joke.
it's jazzy because he was playing minor pentatonic blues.
