Every. Single. Time. I see one of JPs videos showing some sort of lick or phrase I end up pausing it, going into some weird zone and end up improving my playing technique and speed by a percentage point or two. By the end it feels like my left hand is on steroids and it's almost impossible to hit a wrong note or make an error. Thank you John Petrucci for being such a decent, likeable guy with zero ego.
Exactly, you hit the right word...."decent"..... he is so decent, humble and down to earth...... not like other metal guitarists....with a ego like a universe.
These comments critiquing John's tone are Hilarious! Listen to what he is saying, understand what he's playing and choose to use it or don't. In the context of a guitar lesson, tone is almost irrelevant. Did you expect him to have his tech roll in his live rig so he could show you a simple sequencing exercise?
MyworstEnemy I don't think tone is irrelevant. It's as relevant as having the guitar in tune... so pretty damn relevant I would say. If I want to see a guitar lesson, I think it's a given to expect a pleasant tone as well. Besides, no one is expecting him to have his whole rig present with him. But damn. Is that they best they can do with whatever they have at hand? I can get a much better tone using my used $180 practice amp. I think the little Fender Jaguars that go for maybe $100 can also do much better. There's no way they didn't have the means to provide better tone. So the complaint about tone is perfectly justified.

Будучи абсолютно не знаком с Джоном и просматривая эти уроки мне показалось , что он не только классный гитарист , но , также , и классный человек . Он так ИСКРЕННЕ в своих уроках старается кого-то чему-то научить на гитаре , без лишнего пафоса и показного величия ... John you are the best. Thank you.
I have been looking for a lesson like this for months! And the fact that my house god John Petrucci is the teacher just makes me cry of pure joy! Thank you!
I’m so glad I took a musical approach to life rather than sports. It has taught me so much. Listening to this is so easy for me since I have so much of a musical background. John is awesome!
God bless the person who posted this and the awesome lesson from this great. Person and Player and Teacher... you gave me a Merry Christmas gift 2020.thanks to you and all associated with this production. He is Great one only John Petrucci
one of a million sequences that he makes look easy but takes a bit of time to master! and how much other things and many years of practice! inspired me for 25 plus years and makes me wanna put it down for how much practice and effort it takes with life! seems impossible! but yet i keep going for those years. guitar god and down to earth without an ego! met him at the keswick theater in philly got ticket signed and talked for a while with him portnoy and larue !
Everyone cryin about the tone...it's a lesson on PICKING TECHNIQUE and PHRASING, so, did you learn anything or are you such experts you already knew more than JP
thank you Jorge for posting this. Mr. Petrucci explains and teaches better than most, whereas a lot of "teachers" are just showing off and don't really want us to repeat their "god-like" performances, he takes the time and shows us slowly and Exactly what he's doing.
Sometimes I let my guitarist self esteem get a little high and think "Im pretty good at guitar. Then I watch Petrucci do some simple sequencing exercise and I think "Wow, I really suck."
I didn't know Jake Bowen (Periphery) was John's nephew until I saw a DiMarzio video of them together a few weeks ago. John talks about going to early Periphery shows to watch the band. It explains why Jake is so good, he took lessons from John.
Really cool tone thing. So reminiscent of Eric Johnson with his distinctive tone. I'm not even the biggest Petrucci fan (nothing against him, just not my personal thing) but I can ALWAYS tell it's him within seconds of hearing him play. Such a cool thing about the truly great players that they stand out in a sea of really great musicians all playing similar things. If I had a year to kill I'd love to learn his style because it would fit so great over other styles of rock and even some blues (I think). Sadly, RUclips wasn't here when I was a kid learning to play and I missed out on this kind of technique and theory building.
i kinda fell in love with siggi braun's guitars, but the one blacKat played was definitely an outstanding guitar. though i dont really like their version of the modern strat shape. haven't played a skerversen yet, but they seem to be really special and innovative guitars
the bfr is pobably one of the best playing guitars i've ever had in my hands, and it sounds excellent as well. a friend of mine has one, lowest action i've ever played. ever played one yourself?
it's worth it. but before you buy it... take a look at some of the smaller custom companies! the BFR is very expensive, you could get a custom for the price with everything built to your taste. for example Mayones, KxK, Ran, BlacKat, Siggi braun, skervesen or Nik huber. but if the JP7 has all the specs you want, you'll get a great guitar as well.
That they set up right next to the lighting rig or something! Good lesson though. John is an excellent teacher. You can see his ability to speak publicly improve in these old videos. Correlates with his hair thinning and arms growing!
Have yet to crack speed picking and crosspicking simultaneously. If you are a JP / Al D. / Morse player and insist on picking EVERY note (which is cool AF, don't get me wrong), but HOW do they do it! It's impossible to keep the fluidity of up / down / up / down alt strokes when picking every note going cross string. You WILL eventually do two down strokes / up strokes in a row (pick is on upstroke but next note is a string below). See? Yngwie often stays fluid while crossing strings by hammering / pulling on / off a little, etc. But JP can pick every note at will. Someone explain! Even more amazing, Al D. does not anchor his picking hand .... It floats! THAT is the most amazing thing I've ever seen a "pick every note" player do.
Every. Single. Time. That's call inspiration!

This guy is so talented and inspiring. I love how he presents everything in both a theory and non-theory way.

a lot of those type of players do lessons and their guitars sound like fart in a jar, not sure why they do that....

He's clearly been given a practice amp by the interviewer. I don't see what the big deal is.
Incredible musician .
Some of his lessons go so over my mortal comprehension, but I got a lot of mileage out of this this one! J.P. Is a beast of a guitar player

Everyone cryin about the tone...it's a lesson on PICKING TECHNIQUE and PHRASING, so, did you learn anything or are you such experts you already knew more than JP
Who are crying dude?!! I can see mops only and a few Taylor Swift posters 😂
My ears are always open when JP speaks

Cool guy and super guitarist
Sometimes I let my guitarist self esteem get a little high and think "Im pretty good at guitar. Then I watch Petrucci do some simple sequencing exercise and I think "Wow, I really suck."
Guitar genius!
He's magically and professionally
this actually helps so much ..legit

His tone is so tight, ahhhhhh.
i NEED to have a lesson with this guy

Amazing
Cool lesson
JP is step by step going to the top guitarist of the world !
hahaha man i love you...i really needed these advices XD
these notes are usually heard in "japanese" scales.
similar to the guitar solo part of "ashes in the sky" by loudness.
Salam buat semua crew dream theater john portnow dan yg lainya
Epic man is epic
and the first sequence is theme that has been later developed into On the backs of angels :P
Jack of all trades master of none.
you can tell how synyster gates is inspired by his melodic sequences. this lick is almost identical to synyster's recent live solos
i kinda fell in love with siggi braun's guitars, but the one blacKat played was definitely an outstanding guitar. though i dont really like their version of the modern strat shape. haven't played a skerversen yet, but they seem to be really special and innovative guitars
Nice, that first melody is the same as the Gerudo Valley theme from Zelda.
He seems like a real nice down to earth guy
Kamulah guru gitar ku melalui you tube aku sayang kamu john petrucci
He seems to be a genuinely friendly and self-effacing guy, in addition to a Galaxy-class virtuoso.
so.. that's how synyster gates did the hail to the king solo :3
Alejandro Enmanuel Cabrera Contreras You again 😆
I've Seen this on a Paul Gilbert Lesson too, watch That Guys It's cool!
cool story bro
Exactly.
Tone's better than today's.
I agree with that but the first use of this japanese pentatonic scale must be attributed to marty friedman with Cacophony (with Jason Becker)
Yup, sounds like it.
Kamu mengajar gitar yg bisa kupahami dan ajaranmu jelas
Why he was using a zoom 505 in this video.. nostalgic
2:08 se parecea la de Zero Tolerance. :)
Godrucciiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking the same for years, and I think I look a little bit too XD
“I’m John Petrucci and today I’ll be teaching you how to giggle adorably.”
I'm buying a Petrucci 7-string this year. I can't wait 'til I have the money.
Hm, it aint as complex as it looks to be, but definately looks so awesome.
I'm totally using these tricks to look awesome >:)

4:42 who wants to be a millionaire?
looool
ME
lol seems li'l bit
I'm sure he was talking about the amp. Have you ever played one of these guitars? They're amazing. Not your cup of tea maybe, but definitely not crap.
👏👏👏👏
Does 4:53 sounds like Hirajoshi Scale?
Something I like about him, he uses actual musical terms a lot.
David Kilgore he went to berklee bro 😂
@@dakchiodakchi8908 He didn’t say he wasn’t educated. 🤣
cannot remember what attraction i had on him that made me bu y his first demos on his 1st video tape and still all over him..haha..love this guy!
That they set up right next to the lighting rig or something!
Good lesson though. John is an excellent teacher.

Akulah penggemar dream theater selama ada yg nmanya you tube dariku syafrudin penggemar mu john
Is there Part 1 and 2 from John?
5:10 wow the camera angle and his fingers are so that you don't even need tab for that. I've never seen it so clearly.
4 people just threw their guitar away and said FAWK THIS!
If only John petrucci was my guitar tudor..
on the back of angels...
Seems good guitarist. Wheres he teaches?
It matters if I can get the money! xD But yes probably the BFR.
the background looks like something from blue's clues
Why does it look like JP is in the house from Blues Clues?
what issue of gw is this from?
1:30... he allready wrote on the backs of angels back then?! O.o
hes actually playing the hirojoshi scale.
HAHA! Spot on!
Yeah all Music Man guitars are like that
Blues clues going on in the background
5:36 is the only part I can play
Wow, I totally didn't even see your comment, and I said the same thing. It's so funny that it looks like that. xD

What happened with his tone in this one?
bfr?
Oh... my... god....
He must have been auditioning to be the latest steve/joe
What issue is this in
Is it just me or does John Petrucci look exactly like Julian from the trailer park boys???
Frig off Randy!
Yes lol
