Petrucci was a lot more fusion oriented back in the 90's and that enriched his melodies and style, now he's just wanting to be the best and fastest cuz he gets recognition out of that.
bstockwellc exactly it enriched his playing. Nowadays he has a family and probably sees Dt a more as a businessman to provide for his family, thus he focus on what will make him more money. And thats life, Im really glad weve got to enjoy this monster player (90s petrucci). Ironically I find this version of Petrucci had a much better technique than the current version.
In my opinion this jp was far better than the now, much sense of melody with fusion licks and chromatic notes, it feels more interesting than the current shreder he is nowadays
yeah. when i saw "while my guitar..." i was totally impressed by paul's solo, and i think it shut up people who say paul doesn't have any feeling or emotion. that solo was perfect. and he has amazing solos in mr big and his solo albums, but in that matter petrucci is doing better. his only solo album is up there with satriani's and vai's, in my opinion
i totally agree, and i think that jp is a better songwriter. it seems like when i listen to pg solo releases i hear alot of robin trower which i dont really care for. but if you watch pg play in yellow matter custard he can play just like george or completely rip the best improv solo... but i really liked suspended animation too. so youre very right.
paul has better articulation and precision than petrucci, but than almost everyone else as well. they are my two favorite, but petrucci is way more melodic and is a better songwriter. both have their own things, and they are both amazing. his playing has changed fot the best, in my opinion. he is more diverse, more technical, more melodic, has a better sound, and a more defined style. paul too. paul and petrucci... who wins???? THE MUSIC WORLD
yea gilberts technically better, and when picking faster you can still hear all the notes unlike petrucci. i still enjoy john but i agree with some of the other comments, his playing has changed for the worst, he did play "better" with his ibanez. not to down him or anything i just think paul overall more musical with his shred.
This petrucci was awesome, imaginative, his playing at that time it was a lot of better than the actual.
Even his guitars were colored.
The most jazz fusion intro to a rock DVD ever
I first heard in 2007 and after so many years still think its one of the best solos i've y even hear. I love it!!!! i never tire of hearing.
Petrucci is one of those guitarist i envision when i think of players with absolutely no weaknesses. Great stuff!

Always loved this intro/outro footage
sounds like he was exploring jazz during these years
i wish every DVD had an intro like this
This is peak of his playing style , melodic with feel and bunch of shreed licks
when train of tought comes petrucci change a lot..... but sometimes he still have that taste in his solos anyways he is amazing...
el mejor solo de petrucci de toda su carrera por lejos lejos muy lejos jazz fusion papa !
In my opinion this jp was far better than the now, much sense of melody with fusion licks and chromatic notes, it feels more interesting than the current shreder he is nowadays
i miss that ibanez. his musicman sounds great but i was raised on and love ibanez guitars
totally agree, the phrasing, everything...
His tone was so much better with the Ibanez guitars... Those were the days.
lo maximo
nice stuff from john!!!
he is so good.
It makes me fall asleep!
he got into blues after hearing Stevie Ray Vaughn which was after hearing Steve Morse, whom JP has said on numerous occasions is his favorite player
I must say this Petrucci had a better tone with the Ibanez than with the Music man and its sad cause i actually like his playing more with the Ibanez.
I dont know if its that particular guitar that makes him play like this ... Lol ... He should bring back some of this essence to his repertoire !
@sanctusignis no..it was filmed during the bands sound check in 94
Where the hell is he getting all these amazing backing tracks
He has .....a band?
Definitely.
@VanishingDigital Well put.
@sanctusignis ohh i think you are right, thanksss dude!!!
Succes by disipline

anybody knows where to find the backing track for this ?
I dont know why but I get that feeling that there is a religion just based on john petrucci.. Youre asking me why? Well, read the comments :D
I agree but I don't think it's the guitar because the music man guitar is amazing!! his playing has changed ...
What is this song called??
somebody knows the name of this song?? please i really need it!!

Do you by any chance have or know what show it was that he used the footage from on his instructional video?
I'm pretty sure this was from a sound check back in the early 90's
1995
is this an actual song? if it is can someone tell me the name?
@f22turboaccord its impossible to compete with his 90s beast-self
what is the name of this introduction song?
Hi I'm john petrucci you're gonna stop playing guitar after this hour
@f22turboaccord guthrie govan?!?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this solo is using Mixolydian right?
A dorian, he modal mixes over A dorian but stays in the Key of G.
+DTPetrucci123490th thanks much man, I also found that it sound good in g Mixolydian
@ironwolg i want him to make me some!! lol
NAME OF THE SONG PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
check my video to his solo from this video.
dude, he is christ!
strange..he's playing like a man with a soul here..
Holy shit!! I gonna burn my guitar. . .
See I think you're wrong. I think he taught himself the blues after the other stuff.
Yer the Ibanez is much nicer, I really want one of those guitars.
over reaction of the year? relax. they're just praising him, theyre allowed to

Petrucci, please go back to your jazzy style. Enough with the metal, lol.
paul gilbert is better
