It's pretty obvious that John Petrucci set out to create a solo with every single trick in the book when he wrote this. It has so much to it. It has melodic playing, sexy vibrato, shredding, string skipping, sweeping, tapping, blues licks, chords, barre 4th chords, tremolo flutters, and ends off with a huge reverse dive bomb. All in a short 1 minute solo. This is why I love John Petrucci.

For those of you critizing how poorly this is played and asking "I thought this guy was supposed to be good..." here is what you need to know: I myself have been stunned and amazed by the reputation he's gotten as a "guitar god", precisely because of videos like these and the fact that more than half the time he plays live, he's equally as sloppy. The answer: he outplays himself in the studio. Probably practices 10 hours a day leading up to a recording session, but then is too busy being social and travelling on the road to keep up. Some guitarists have a natural ability to maintain skill without practicing, an "innate talent" so to speak, but he's obviously not one of them. So to you, I say: judge him by his records. He's played some amazingly incredible things. And whether or not he can play them 100% of the time, he played them once and that's all that matters because guitar is not a competition but rather a tool for creation.
Well to be honest, there arent many players that technically can play johns stuff. Right around 2002 I bought a Guitar Player magazine that had tabs to this solo, and also an accompanying DVD with this same video on it. Side note, years before that when this album came out, before it was tabbed, I learned this solo by ear good enough to pull off a "fake" of it.
Funny, it's sloppier than some covers out there: and it's reassuring ! But I also guess John was filmed on the spot by a magazine, that adds a lot of pressure

To sum it up: the more you see him play the more you like him (saying for myself) :D
HarisDT Agreed man, you should check out Marco Sfogli as well, phenomenal.
Koroar
Yes, especially him :D forgot to mention him up there. Marco is a beast, listened to all his material and he's amazing.
sounds like Steve Vai.....
o cara faz isso tudo em apenas um minuto.
o cara é bom.
One of my biggest guitar Hero ever! 😎❤🤟
Impressive technique but that was pretty mindless, incoherent, disjointed and not melodic whatsoever
Anyone else here from The Doo?
yeah
a little late
but yes
No i personally watch atleast decent content, that trash belongs in the backyard to keep rodents out…
Great playing, but the gain is a little too high for my tastes, makes some of the notes blur together.
At 1x speed : John Petrucci shredding
At 2x speed : Oh! That’s Davide Le surdo 😱😱
JP is insanely clean
Cool, but boring.
eargasm
Ibanez JPM Better.
One of my all time favorites by papa trucci
@JPRGO I'm sorry, but..... that was probably the greatest thing I've ever seen. Thank you for that...
0:37 i bet James Hetfield can play it with only downstrokes
Too much notes, no feeling... Can you play back in black ? (Average boomer sentance)
Ibanez jpm sound is so much Better than this
It's just brutal mid range cut on his musicmans. The Ibanez models sound smooth
Claro ejemplo de que el mejor momento de petrucci a nivel tecnico fue en los 90
Sus mejores solos son los de Awake.
i love this guy
Too bad he lost the tone of his early days
Weird how awful it sounds without the rest of the band to fill in the blanks. I suppose great songwriting really is a group effort.
Archem well, just listen to isolated Van Halen Soli. It sounds unstructured and all in all pretty messy but in the final track it works just fine and knows to amaze. Guess you're right with that
0:23 horrible arpeggio…
Wtaf 💀
Οh so you are going to learn the god guitarist
@@tasosvrosogos huh
@@prathamjha3337 he is going to learn petrucci things that he mastered
Im a drummer and have always loved this solo! Damn, that's f**kin sick!
17 years ago holy fucking shit
video from 15 years ago and it already had this absurd sound
Monster👊😎
That's a pretty good cover, if Dream Theater ever needs a replacement they should call this guy.
😂
Esse cara foi muito feliz quando criou esse solo, caraca velho!!!
Petrucci's best solo.
A masterpiece.
Man! He did with no backing track and the notes and execution is so perfect
0:17 lick from King's X "Over my head"
Great cover
Brilliant solo by a genius guitar player. John p is the best guitar player in history..
