How to connect external hard drive to Android Phone

- in this video i will show you how to connect external hard drive to Android Phone. You just need to buy an OTG connector and an external drive (in this case a Seagate backup plus), which I suggest you to format in NTFS and that's it.
On this way you can directly move or copy all the videos and pictures that you shoot directly into the drive without the need to go through a computer!

I heave been reading that the average smartphone won't be able to power the hard drive, that it won't come on, is this true?

So glad i finally got something that works.
i just want to point out few things:
# HDD require some electricity, it will drain your phone's battery when the HDD is active
# Windows has special command that could turn off HDD when its idle, not sure with android
# when the transfer is active (read data, writing) wether you are copying files, watch videos, etc, it will require even more power and drain your battery even faster
# consider using a micro-SD for your phone's backup / extra storage. and use your HDD as "external backup" only.
# NTFS should be operated only under windows OS.

I have a question sir...can a modern smartphone output enough power to support a 2TB external HDD or do I need to find some type of adapter that has an additional port for power input to the drive?

I just installed ES file explorer on my Redmi note 7. It works with my WD Passport 1TB. I used Total Commander on PC for more than a decade, never know it existed on android. Might gonna try it out. Thanks!

Right now I'm using MLUSB mounter for ext drives.

Most of this is helpful and crystal clear but I got lost in the last 30 seconds of the vid, once in that long file menu in File Manager. I don't understand how to simply back up the entire SD as opposed to selected files.

Great video. Just FYI, you need to download the app because most of the HDD, if not all, are based on NTFS, unlike pen drives which are based on FAT or FAT32. If your HDD comes with FAT file system then you won't need a separate app as most of the mid to high end phones are capable of mounting that kinda storage. But then again, it's pretty hard to find an HDD which is FAT based.

NTFS is proprietary, so almost zero filesystems, if any, have used NTFS as their base.
You can format HD witb FAT32
How can I copy or delete data from my external hard disk? It gets connected through OTG but in read only mode. No copy/paste can be done.

NTFS I'm pretty sure should work fine. I've tried this with a few flash drives on my Android that were formatted to NTFS. Its better for file storage anyway.

@@gb2174 Its actually a format for hard drives. Not really some program you need to buy. Only certain things such as game consoles need formats like exFAT. Most PCs use NTFS for storage.

Does the adaptor have to specifically say “OTG”? Or will any adaptor from USB-C to USB 3?
If youre purchasing an adapter which functions for attaching hard drive and a mobile, then there's an option on your phone called OTG (on-the-go). If you enable that, I'll help you explore and transfer files from mobile to any external drive or pen drive.
No adapter has specifically named OTG, it's just an adapter which helps transfer files from mobile to HDD, only if you enable OTG

It's better not to connect any portable hdd's to your phone because some device's, kind of messes with the hdd's NTFS drive format. It may lead's to brick your portable HDD.
considering the apps installed look kinda risky, i'd opt to use it with laptop instead

2) you just used it with the provided cable that came with the hard-drive?
3) could you make transfer of files between hdd and the phone or you could only acess the files - like playback?
