  • Woodturning Basket Illusion Maracas
In this video I turned a set of maracas on the lathe. I decorated them with
a technique called basket illusion, it's a process of burning and coloring the wood. The maracas are 10 1/2" long and 3 1/2" in dia, and filled with Pinto beans.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodturning and woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

5% here. This was a double treat. Woodturning and maracas. Since I am a rhythm "specialist" in our church praise team AND I dabble in turning, both were appropriate. Also, I used to be in radio. I tried TV, but I had couldn't talk to the camera so that career went nowhere. Of course, it didn't help that I have a face for radio. 😁

I know what you mean though, talking to the camera on your own means you can't read any reactions and it's just a strange thing to have to do really. Probably why I'm never that side of the camera, if I can help it :D

  • @kleinesren7064

I would be nervous, too, talking to a camera. I think as soon as you are not focused on your woodwork or something, the setting changes - the way you are supposed to talk to people on YT kicks in. Maybe you sense that change in tone and that gets you a little bit nervous? Anyway, I LOVE your videos and your outros :3

Not sure if I shared this story with you....
When we were little we went camping to Yosemite.
The redwood trees were absolutely beautiful went all the way up beyond the clouds.
Left room for imagination of Jack and the Beanstalk; one of our stories at the campfire.
My dad had gathered up four baby redwood trees one for me and my three siblings.
He planted them in our backyard.
The trees grew very tall and rather quick. Our neighbor Ricky told my daddy that it was illegal for us to grow redwood trees in our part of the city. With that being said, my father had the trees cut down.
At the base of the tree all four redwoods had grafted together.
We each helped my dad handcraft a little four leaf clover table and a heart-shaped tray.
It's rough around the edges, he didn't have a late or a router everything was done by hand and it's so beautiful with good memories.
Those two pieces are probably the best out of all of my furniture.
    Ok. Have a great day.
Just thought I'd share this with you.
    From, Kat

Nice Maracas. When I lived on the US/Mexico border, I use to buy maracas in Juarez, MX. They were beautifully painted, but they were also made of very thin and cheap wood and would not last anytime. The ones you turned are much nicer and I like the geometric design you put on them. Another great video Carl. The design is very cool.
I haven't been ignoring you about getting a lathe I've just had some unexpected financial issues. I'm still planning on getting a new lathe from you, that is if you're still a dealer.
    Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks for sharing and God bless

This was a great idea. I love the basket illusion on the maracas! LOL I was here at the end. Evidently you're not a solo player, Carl! I have a suggestion for what you can do at the end of each video.....I've been wanting to say this, so here goes. You spend all this time making the projects just to quickly show the end product in 5 seconds flat. Please slow down and take the time to show us everything about the product, then sit it on display and give us the time to admire it. Show us how proud you are of what you just made by displaying it proudly. Go back and watch the end of anyone of your projects and take note of how fast you are about it. Take your time showing us, Carl. You do such good work! Thank you!!!!

I like your videos, they have helped me a lot. The music is starting to be a bit much. Especially when compared to your earlier ones, with you explaining stuff as you turned. Just my opinion.

Thank you so much Joseph!! I think the music makes the videos fun to watch, and is certainly more fun to edit :) I do try to explain any issues I had at the end, even though that isn't my strong point ( as you can see at the end of this one ;)

Carl, great job! Well done and thanks for Sharing. Babbling is ok, here in Australia we also call it Jibbering, which is also ok. It is almost as entertaining as bloopers at the end of a video. Cheers, mate, stay safe, stay well and keep on Jibbering.

Very, very cool, Carl! This is a great project idea and you executed it beautifully. I empathize with you on talking to the camera to shoot an opening or closing-- it's the hardest part. I thought your guitar track was perfectly matched to the project. Somehow I get the feeling you are a guitar player like me. I also thought the basket pattern was PERFECT. This one really inspired me.

I'm going to stop this a minute and and talk about the music with that intro. It started out rough and smoothed out, just like the piece. Nice touch. Also, I think the awkwardness of the camera comes from the fact that you talk to people all day and talking to the camera isn't the same transaction as talking to a person. One is more oratory and formal and the other is more casual also, when you're having a conversation, you have context clues, intonation, and body language to convey your information and make sure it's being heard. When you're speaking to the camera, it's a monologue which is a lot harder than talking to people in my opinion. Great video. Seems you guys are doing well and staying busy. Take care and be safe!

Thank you so much Dave! You're right, it is a lot harder! I guess I'm trying to wrap everything up in a minute or two, and that makes it even more awkward :) Take care, and stay safe too!
