- The basket illusion is an optical illusion created by a special technique used in woodturning. It creates the illusion of a woven basket on a solid piece of wood. In this video I turned a small stand for the Niles SS-6000 bottle stopper.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning. Хобби
It’s always pleasure to watch you work
cool project Carl, always enjoy the basket illusions that you create!
Thank you buddy!
Very cool idea for storing a bottle stopper that won't stand up. Those basket illusions are really impressive.
Thank you Mark!
Very impressed! Recently got into turning. Have seen some of your work and appreciate what you do! Congratulations to your son on becoming an Eagle! He is a brother of mine!
Thank you very much! That's very cool, He's in the Navy now.
Great little project Carl. Really enjoy doing basket illusion also. Matter of fact I built a holder and platform after watching one of your videos about 6 or 7 years ago. Still using the holder with dedicated burner but have changed the platform a few times as my lathes got larger. Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your videos!
Take care, Dave
Thank you Dave! It is a great tool for doing this sort of thing.
Excellent form, Carl! Never thought of a stopper for a box or vessel. Great job.
Thank you Jay!
That is a clever technique. Thanks for the video!
Thank you!
Beautiful! Very, very nice!!!

Thank you Troy!
I always enjoy your videos. I made a platform (copying you)) for basket illusions - works well and I thank you for sharing your ideas.
That's awesome, thank you Lacey.
I bet those basket illusion pieces smell great!
Yes they do 🙂
Beautiful! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Great project Carl. Excellent functional decoration. Love it!
Thank you Mike!
Super nice, Carl
Thank you!
Nice, Carl. Great way to store the stopper after the bottle is empty, too. Hopefully often lol.
Bill
Thank you Bill, LOL
Cool project Carl. I am happy that you enjoy this type of work. Me, I hate doing more than one of anything. Way too many beads and lines for me to handle. Even though you make it look so easy, I'll pass on this one. Still, thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen, it can be a bit tedious 😐
Everything is perfect 😍😍
Thank you!
Terrific design & illusion Carl! Hope that all is well! 👍👍👏👏
Thank you Steve!
Like what you did, great job
Thank you 🙂
I love the bottle stopper!
Thank you!
Neat Carl.
Thank you Jack!
The beads really look great. I really wondered about sanding after using the beading tool. Surely sanding is required but that would ruin the beads???
Thank you! Yes sanding will ruin the beads, I don't do any sanding.
Another great project!
You use easy wood tools, how do these cutters compare to the on line bargain cutters ? Can you provide some commentary with out getting in trouble 🙏
Thank you Alan! I would stay away from the cheep cutters. They aren't very sharp even new.
This just my opinion but I think lowering the temperature of the pyrography tool would have helped the final look.
Thanks for the tip Terry!
Great job. What burner are you using?

Looks amazing Carl.
What tool are you using to do the horizontal burning lines please?
Take care Carl.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw! It's a wood burner here's the link. www.amazon.com/shop/thewoodshoptv
@CarlJacobson Thanks Carl. Appreciate it
Carl, when you're sanding the recess, what is the material you're using? It doesn't look like regular sandpaper. It looks like a sort of mesh. Thx.
Hi Alan, It's Mirka mesh sandpaper. Here's the link www.turningwood.com/ It works great!
What kind of wood did you use for this? Seems like it turned like butter 😊
It's Maple
Carl, what speed are you turning when you use the cards to burn? I have t had much success with that technique. Thanks!!
Hi Nancy, I run it at 2000 rpm for the burning.
Where can I find that little live center???
