I totally agree with you here. I used to be a narrow minded music fan but in the last few years I've started listening to different genres and styles of music which helped me to decide what I prefer in my music taste, my taste in music is so varied nowadays
Eloise is a 5sos Phangirl I thank my friends who introduced me into different artists they are an inspiration and a blessing for me to get out of the box 😎😁
Luis Murillo Rivera As I say, my music taste varies a lot but some of the bands/artists I like- 5sos, Eminem, Ed Sheran, Iron Maiden, MCR, All time low, Muse etc
I guess that's because the fanbase grew in number A LOT when Stressed Out got released, a hit single from Blurryface. I'll admit, I'm one of the people who got introduced to TØP that way 😂
TwoScoopsXD a lot of albums are inspired by the Beatles in specific and no not every album ever is inspired by them, most albums in the rock and alternative genres are but not every album ever
Amir Palamar You mean bands like death grips wasn't inspired by the Beatles? Gee whiz I really thought I heard some Sgt Pepper on that Ex-military album. The wolf howls clearly borrow from the ambient sounds of "a day in the life."
I generally love pop punk, metal, Metalcore, rock, and alternative. But I also dip my hands in rap and pop but it's mostly stuff that you reviewed and gave a good score to.
okay i also fucking HATE when people say they're a fan of a band or artist and they ONLY know like the 3 biggest hits. like come onnnnnnnn you're missing out so bad it hurts me
I see no problem with this when the person is a new fan, and its knowing more about the artist/band each day, for example, I'm a new fan of Twenty One Pilots. I still don't know every song, or know all the lyrics or everything about them (what I don't need to, cuz I want to enjoy their music, not be an Wikipedia), but I agree with you, and its really annoying when people says that is fan for ages but only know the hits. I don't think "posers" are bad. is actually good for the artists, cuz is a new person enjoying their job, but what's the deal about just say "I'm becoming a fan, I still don't know all their songs" or whatever. To some it looks like is 'offensive".
i agree. it's like "person, for your own GOOD you need to listen to it all" lol. but i think the term "fan" is more weighted nowadays, it means you love most or all of a band's discography and also like the members as people too, not just that you casually like a few songs
I see this a lot in people who listen to nothing but classic rock and think "today's music is just garbage." I can kinda understand older folks who grew up in the classic rock era, but people really need to branch out because there is a lot of modern-day music that is fantastic and genuine!
Alt Columnist you know what you do, put on Flight of the know by Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears. It reminds me of a mix of back boys, jazz, and is a concept album!
The newer stuff, it doesn’t have the same feeling as the older stuff. I actually just enjoy stuff that’s not new because the newer stuff doesn’t have the same passion. I still listen to new music, but I don’t enjoy it too much.
To be completely honest, I decided I'm going to click on every album review you put out and at least listen to one of the songs off the album. After seeing your Top 20 albums of 2016 and honourable mentions, I realized I missed out on so many good albums/bands this year and I realized that just by listening to the little snippets you included before talking about each album
+Beyond ARTV (Yes, I am reposting this because I am annoying like that. Besides I thought this would be a good video to post this comment in) I wanted to recommend you some bands that mainly do music in Spanish but that occasionally release something in English. I really like them because they give themselves the chance to experiment with different sounds, since they don't have the pressure of having huge sells. I hope you can give them a try (I am not expecting you to make a video about them but I wanted to share "something possibly new"): Chikita Violenta - Laydown Car Crash Sisters - All my friends live underwater Jenny and the Mexicats - Anthem Song Biggot - She is my man Austin TV - Shiva Big big love - Eurydice I can Chase Dragons - Gold Coast Rey Pila - No Longer Fun Nortec Collective - Clorophile Guincho - Bombay Wet Baes - Don't Go Ana Tijoux - Shock (she raps in Spanish but she is something worth listening just because of the rhythm)
Yes, I went and checked out Stephen, The 1975 (meant to back in Feb. but somehow forgot. O.O ) Waterparks and Jon Bellion. I tend to play musical catch up at the end of the year, trying to see if I missed anything totally meant for me that came out.
I have a friend that only listens to the Hamilton soundtrack and that's all! She only has on her phone Hamilton and Illuminate by Shawn Mendes and I'm just like "How can you live like that?"
To be fair not everyone puts all of their music on their phone. I only put a few of my favorites on my phone and the rest of my music is on other devices like my iPad or laptop, because I don't want to use up too much of my storage space on my phone so I can still download apps and take pictures/videos and whatnot.
I do love the musical Hamilton, too. But I also love a lot of other music (mostly alternative rock/pop punk). I can tolerate some pop, too. But no, I do not like it when someone will ONLY listen to ONE artist or ONE album.
Three of mcr's influences were Black Flag, Morrissey, and David Bowie. They're a few of my favorite artists now. I definitely suggest listening to artists that have influenced bands
I used to be that person that would listen to anything that the mainstream radio would put out back in middle school but I've been listening to different genres and I have a variety taste in music now and I'm very happy about that! ☺️
yeah. i go to instagram and tumblr and the accounts that i come across always have a bio that lists about 3 artists: melanie martinez, halsey, and twentyonepilots.... and then they go on to act all edgy and critisize the mainstream pop music listeners for being sheep, as if the music they listen to makes them so different and openminded.
I always hated when people say they like and listen to everything, and all genres, then you show them your favourite music and they say they don't like it. Clearly they don't like everything then.
Well they probably mean that, and anything else that isn't really pop or mainstream. Play them some classical music, jazz, or anything instrumental, and they probably don't like that either.
What most people mean is that they like at least -something- from most genres; not that they like every song released in every genre. Nobody does that--it would be absurd.
They probably won't view rock and metal as music anyway, and that's what pisses me off. Nonetheless, becoming a part of the Children of the Korn was the best moment of my life
I have a diverse taste. I'm not really a head of any genre. There are artists that I'll listen to a lot and get obsessed with, and continue discovering music from, but I don't stick to just that. What happens is I'll keep being obsessed with more and more artists as I find new things that I'm just absolutely in love with. I'm still kinda creating my alley, and probably will for the rest of my life.
an idea: maybe you should make a series in which you talk about which artists you should check out if you like soandso band. for example if you like Green Day you should definitely check out bands like VANT (for real check out VANT, they're working on their debut album currently but their karma seeker ep is a gem) and Neck Deep. i know you just said a lot of people don't care but i know a lot of people do, i love finding new artists and i'm pretty sure enough other people do as well
hell yeah man! i'm glad you like them! check out swmrs as well while you're at it :D they have a similar sound to vant, and billie joe's son Joey is on the drums
It really annoys me when people only listen to Top 40 music. That's what my mom does and she thinks the music I listen to is way too out there, even though I don't listen very abrasive genre's like metal.
I have a problem with dudes who complain about how there's "no good music anymore" and then go on to mention how the radio never "plays anything good." THERE'S YOUR FIRST PROBLEM RIGHT THERE, FELLA! Stop hoping and praying that mainstream radio will play whatever it is you're hoping to hear. That's what streaming services and RUclips are for. Literally, just type in "bands that are similar to ______" and you get a whole list. That's how I find my bands/artists, and now I know hundreds upon hundreds from a vast array of genres.
I disagree with some parts of your rant, like that part where you mention your dad. In my opinion, a small minded or "narrow minded" music listener are those who only listen to selected few genre or musicians and trash other genres/musicians and their listener. _that's_ narrow minded; feeling entitled and thinking that their taste is the best and anything else is shit. But people who truly just listen to music for comfort and don't care about others?? I don't think they're narrow minded. They stay in their comfort zone, sure, but it's worth remembering that not everyone listen to music like you, Jon. You listen to experience it, to review it; you're a music junkie. But there are other people who don't really care about music and only listen to it occasionally, therefore have no interest to branch out. I think these people need to be left out on this discussion.
Yes definitely I have to really force myself to check out new music because I like to stay in my comfort zone most of the time. I want to want to listen to a wide variety of music but I almost never find that to be the case. I think people need to learn how to understand other people.
I think it's fun to try to listen to songs that are very different from each other stylistically consecutively. Like I'll go from listening to Danny brown (cartoony experimental hip hop) to death (death metal) to weezer (nerdy pop rock)
Its fair enough to have your favourite bands that you always listen too ( Korn, Enter shikari, Linkin park), However i cant stand people that always listen to there 3 favorite bands and that's all.
Ellis jones-hawes well yeah most people have favorites like for me MCR I'll always listen to if a song if there's pops up but I also have thousands of other songs to go to.
Ellis jones-hawes I don't understand how one person can solely listen to songs by THREE different bands. There will be a point in life when that group disbands. What will you do then? Not discover any other genres or artists?
I completely agree! a few years ago I'd only listen to mainstream pop artists/bands and hated genres like heavy metal/rap. but I'm really glad I'm out of that mindset now and am willing to try anything.
tip: a great way to find music is to go to your favourite artist's radio on spotify and listen to songs similar to theirs. by doing that you could maybe find something you're interested in and then check out that artist's music.
Im not huge into a lot of genres. Hell, the only genres i feel i enjoy a lot are Punk, Pop Punk, and some Metal. But i dont just listen to 3 bands, I listen to quite a few and the only genres i cannot stand are country, pop, and most hop hop/rap. Everything else im fine with, but the main genres i go for when i wanna listen to music are the ones I listed above. Anyways, great video c: I agree 100%
You helped me get out of this kind of phase. For a year i only listened to the radio. Then someone recommended that i check out mcr and then from that i moved on to listening some pop-punk and then i got into britpop and then grunge and then back to punk bands then i stopped listening to new music but i discovered your channel and my grandparents gave me their record collection and now i listen to a lot of new stuff. Thanks!
A style that one might enjoy branching out to is lo-fi hip-hop. It's kinda like V A P O R W A V E but it tends to have more clear lyrics and a more changing beat. It's a nice relaxing style.
I know a kid like this who is incredibly closed minded. He listens to 80s rock, not good 80s rock like The Cure, The Smiths etc, shitty 80s rock. He refuses to listen to any lo fi recording bands and I tried to show him Radiohead, and he claims they are terrible, but the thing is, he listened to like 2 seconds of the first track on Kid A. He pisses me off, he never tries anything new
This was literally me at 12 years old. Just Green Day, blink-182, and The Offspring. Then I got into old school punk like the Ramones. I got into Rap a little bit. Then I got into the Beatles. And then Metallica opened me up to Slayer, System of a Down, Tool. I also like other alternative artists now like RHCP, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, and R.E.M. Really it's all about what you expose yourself to and how your taste in music evolves over the years.
I used to be closed minded like this in my scene phase until about 2013 when I heard chocolate by the 1975 and hated it but gave them a chance anyways, dont know whered id be without them.
Same I used to be close minded. But now I am into a lot of genres like lofi hip hop, alternative, indie, pop, celtic, classical and I also listen to symphonic rock
this was highkey me two years ago, pretty much listening to the same 5 artists. gladly, i can say ive more than doubled the artists i listen to, and i plan on getting into much more whenever i have time lol
I honestly got so incredibly lucky, I was raised listening to a massive range of musical genres. Classic rock, musicals, 50s, old school hip hop, country, punk, post-hardcore, classical, jazz, opera (one of my earliest memories is of being in the car with my dad and kicking my legs faster and faster to "Tra la la" (?) from Carmen lmao), on and on. I 100% credit this for how open-minded I am now with music at 22. Now that I'm older and have gotten into music that even my dad doesn't know much about (recently I've been showing him a ton of Korean rap lol) we trade music back and forth. I definitely still have room for improvement (there are certain genres I tend to just automatically stay away from/assume I won't like) but just like you said, it's sometimes mind-blowing to me when people refuse to leave their little bubble. I mean, there's nothing wrong with only really preferring one genre - I just mean the people who refuse to even consider anything else. There's SO much good music out there!
I also hate how people automatically wont give some pop acts a chance. As a 1d fan, it's frustrating how people still think they sing songs like "what makes you beautiful ". They have evolved from that!!
I wouldn't consider myself a one direction fan but I understand what you are talking about. Some of the songs that have been released by the members as solo artist have been great and shows how they have evolved as artists. I would say the same thing goes for Justin Beiber, yeah he was an annoying kid at first but now his music has really improved
electra pika ehhh I like some pop artists but 1D really isn't for a lot of ppl and it's not bc of "what makes you beautiful" I mean I listened to Made In AM but I just don't like it
electra pika it's not about that I've given all of their music a listen and didn't really care for any of it. I do understand where your frustration is from though but not all people who dislike them are like that just bc of one song or even one album, for many we just don't like their discography as a whole.
You know as a pretentious music nerd myself. You have a LONG way to go. The journey I made and am still making is a fun and fatiguing task. But I’m glad you’re open to new stuff and that’s great. Unlike a co worker of mine who cannot branch out and is still listening to the same old shit🙄
I am a really big fan of 5 seconds of summer and even though it may seem stupid they really helped me explore another side of myself. I found out that they were inspired by bands like All time low and green day and I started listening to those and I really really like them. A few years ago I only liked to listen to pop songs that were on the top on the charts and wouldnt even give a chance to songs that were not singles. Now I feel like I've opened up in some way because although I still like pop I listen to rock, rap and other genres that I never though I would've like as much as I do. I went from only listening to artists suchs as Katy Perry and Taylor Swift to exploring a whole bunch of new artists even though some of them are not as mainstream or ''famous''.
You know, I love to hear this because I SO used to be a close-minded listener, but now I've branched and now, I'm SO happy!! Totally a video that's close to me. Thanks man :))
I found that knowing someone's range of music tastes is one way to figure out how stubborn/narrow-minded they are as a person, at least in my experience. I used to be one of those people but I learned to branch out to other bands/genres that influenced my favorite artists. It's almost like tapping into their minds for a moment, knowing that it was this band or album inspired the piece that I love. I realized how much I was missing out on being stuck in my comfort zone.
lol I use to be stuck in the "rise core" crowd. Because of you I've really expanded my musical tastes. Aside from rock, metal, post hsrdcore, etc. Now I love artists such as Chvrches, TØP, Casey Musgraves, Kendrick Lamar, Carley Rae Jensen, etc. these artists have helped open the door to a lot of different gebre and im so happy I listen to a lot of things outside of metalcore. Also, a suggestion, Maybe a rant on music elitists?
+branm25 I did a video on genre bashing you should check that one out! It's on this channel from a couple years ago. Glad I've been able to show you some new stuff man I know you've been watching me for awhile now
I actually used to be quite narrow minded when it came to music taste but after watching more of your reviews and countdowns, and infinityonhannah's recommendations, have been branched out quite a bit, and i'm more open minded now. I've enjoyed dozens of songs/albums/artists that you or Hannah have recommended.
Plus as an fyi, you recommended me courtney barnett and absolutely love her stuff as well as plenty of other bands. So some of us listen and actually act upon your recommendations.
Great video! I agree with you 100%. I grew up listening to the radio but once I started going to shows and seeing opening bands I branched out a lot musically. I actually stopped listening to the radio in 2006 bc of boredom and replays of the same songs.
I totally agree. I used to only like pop music but recently I've been getting into alternative, rock, punk, r&b, singer songwriter, electronic, and rap. I totally agree with you. You have to step out of your comfort zone with music.
This is literally all my friends. I listen to almost everything that sounds good. Pop/Rock , Grime, R&B, Hip Hop etc. But my friends only listen to Grime since that what is popular where i live, so when i play songs i like they are always like "turn this shit off" And its so annoying because they never branch out or listen to other music they just stick in their little bubble.
The only genre I find it most difficult to listen to is Pop. Lady Gaga is the only pop artist I could listen to at the moment. Alternative, Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Bachata are what I mainly listen to.
I used to only listen to pop punk, post hardcore, alternative, etc. I pretty much hated on everything that wasn't in that genre. I've branched out a lot more because I started listening to rap and then it moved to pop music too. It helped me start to like the self titled Paramore album, twenty one pilots, marina and the diamonds, lorde, and tegan and sara. I still mostly love alternative but hey I'm not some music elitist anymore who says everything that isn't rock sucks.
i discovered great bands like basement, microwave, SWMRS, wolf alice, and car seat headrest because of you, Jon. and if not for you, i wouldn't have discovered that i like indie rock so thanks a lot! xx
I like a variety of music styles... or, more accurately, a variety of different-sounding subgenres within an overarching genre. Seriously, there are so many variations within styles--- then crossovers with other styles which let you segway into other music styles. I have a strong preference for aggressive music and melodic, emotional music. I just connect the most to this sort of music. These specifications can range over a lot of styles. Genres of metal I like: Nu Metal, Alternative metal, industrial metal, electronic metal, progressive metal, metalcore, rap metal, symphonic metal, neoclassical metal. Maybe more I can't remember... Genres of hardcore music that I'll listen to: Post-hardcore, metalcore (again cause it's a fusion genre). Genres of rock I like/will listen to: Alternative rock, pop rock, hard rock, rap rock, industrial rock, southern rock, soft rock (a more recent appreciation and an acquired taste for me), punk rock (also an acquired taste)... Genres of electronic music I like/will listen to: Electronic metal, electronic rock (fusions, how I love them), Drum 'n' Bass (if original enough), electronica, synthwave, dubstep, EDM (though these later two I do not actively seek out) Miscellaneous genres I appreciate: Classical music/orchestral, jazz, a capella, choral music. Music I can tolerate but that definitely isn't my cup of tea: hip-hop, country, bluegrass, pop. Overall I prefer louder music but I have appreciation for any music that's done well. Like One More Light from Linkin Park. Compared to the stuff I have to hear at work, One More Light is a breath of fresh air and, while it may be musically similar to modern pop, I find the lyrics to be so much less vapid and stupid. It has depth and it isn't empty. And with that covered, I can appreciate the music style that I'm less than nutty for because I think the songs are good. That is quality pop in my opinion. Country doesn't bother me as much as it bothers other people. I think it has a pleasant sound to it but... that sound is about the same for every single country song I've heard. Same sound, similar vocals, similar themes. And I hear country a lot at work too. While I can distinguish songs I have a hard time distinguishing artists and Taylor Swift is the only one I can distinguish of the bunch (though she's more of a pop-country thing). Some older country sounds good to me, though. ...I just realized that all my least favorite music genres suffer from repetitiveness. Ironic coming from a person with the disorders I have, which feed off repetitiveness. XD I like variety in media but repetitiveness in the way I operate. Weird. I'm still growing as a music lover and my musical taste could still extend further in the archgenres I enjoy the most simply because of all the variations in them.
I'm guilty of this tbh, the only genre I've listened to for the last 6 months is metalcore..BFMV, Northlane, Architects, Miss May I, Bury Tomorrow and Underoath is all I've listened to pretty much.
I have to say that when I was younger all I listened too was Metal, but now that I am older I have been listening to a lot of different bands. I still try to branch out music wise but don't always have the time to dig for new music. I like Indie Folk a lot and this year I have been listening to some instrumental, and art pop music. But I understand what you mean I know a lot of people that listen to same music and look at me weird because I am always changing.
Your channel has inspired me to branch out of my comfort zone and for that, I am extremely grateful. I have inattentive Adhd and it has been hard for me to find music that interests me in the past even with a Premium Spotify account. Since finding your channel I have joined Cymbal and found a ton of new music that I really like. My favorite videos to watch are 7 on Sundays.
Sometimes you just get sucked into a specific genre or band. Like right now I'm all about rap and hip hop again. I go through phases of only Rock or only Rap or only Pop, etc. Anyway, I know that's not what you're talking about though. Just an added thought. But I agree, it's good to be more open minded with music. There are so many amazing artists out there that you can't just write off because it's outside of your box. But honestly, I think we all have a slight tendency to be a little close minded (or at least hesitant) when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone. BUT lol, how else do you think you started to like the music you like now? You had to start somewhere, so, why not find a new genre and start somewhere?
I totally understand this. I get bored of the same music library so I always check out new stuff cause it's kinda fun and I've found some of my favourite musicians this way. I always have at least 1000 songs on my phone, constantly deleting and adding new songs. I don't understand how you can be content without any new stuff since I love changing it up so much.
i really try to open up, but i get attached to bands v easily and stick with them for v long. and i think its bc i not just love their music, but the entire band itself (their personality, etc). anyways, i love Linkin Park, who always switches up their music sound so i m still v open minded with many music genres thanks to them :)
I would agree with you. In middle school and early high school I would only listen to rock and metal bands. But now I listen EDM, hip hop, and some rap but I still enjoy the metal and rock. I hate it when people don't give other genres a try. Even though there are genres I do not like I can always find one song that is good.
Oh my god I used to be that narrow minded music fan and I'm so damn glad that I left that phase behind, it was actually kind of embarrassing looking back
Preach! Just to add to that I've had situations where people actually judge me for expanding my tastes. Just cause I'm outside the marketing demographic of a rapper or a pop star, that means I can't be a fan. Well according to the charts, I'm stuck with nothing but early 00s mall-punk. While I do love blink & Simple Plan as much as the next suburban early 20s white male, I need some fuckin variety, man. Green Day, Bob Marley, Backstreet Boys, all on the same iPod. Fuck, throw in OutKast, Hole, Bieber, The Stones, Chili Peppers, Bobby Brown, Hilary freakin Duff. I can do this all day mother fuckers. Sublime, TLC, New Edition, George Michael, Mischief Brew, Nofx, Bad Religion, Oasis... someone stop me before I hurt myself. This shit is therapeutic
I’ve always been a “small minded” music listener not because I like it but I have to really force myself to check out new music because I like to stay in my comfort zone most of the time. I’ve tried a lot to listen to new albums but it often doesn’t stick for me. Believe me, I want to want to listen to a wide variety of music but I almost never find that to be the case. I think people need to learn how to understand other people.
The Bey Hive, Beliebers, One Directioners, Team Breezies, Harmonizers, Lana Del Ray fans and fans of Shawn Mendes (those are the fandoms that I feel suck when it comes to people having different opinions on these artists and not continuously kissing their asses).
For people who love "emo" music. These bands influenced most of the 2000s scene American Football Jimmy Eat World Jawbreaker The Cure Promise Ring Rites of Spring Bahaus Sunny Day Real Estate Box Car Racer Siouxie and the Banshees
I have a friend who's really into hard rock while I like different genres, mainly alternative rock, pop punk, indie and stuff like that. Every time I talk about a band that I listen to he automatically dismisses it as shitty music just because it's different from the classic hard rock he's used to. It really pisses me off cause I can't have a single conversation about music with him without having my music taste insulted
I have a friend that only likes rock music from the 80's and 90's. Rush and The Red Hot Chili Peppers are his "favorite" bands but I have only heard him listen to YYZ, Tom Sowyer, and Goodbye Angels. Occasionally he will play a different band that is very good (for example, he's played The 1975 and Hippo Campus and I like them both) but whenever I play him something that I think he'll like, he says something like "It ain't from my generation." Ugh! It really pisses me off sometimes
Exactly! Jon got me into Portugal. The Man and La Dispute just by watching his videos! It's one of the reasons I am subscribed to this channel in the first place! (Hannah also got me into Basement, so thanks Hannah)
My dad is the same way. He refuses to listen to anyone other than def leppard or Styx. Every other band on the planet is bad in his mind no matter who it is. He told me Green Day was trash and that blink 182 should have never started playing music. The fuck!
When I first started watching you I only listened to Fergie, Britney, and Gwen. Your album reviews got me to try new bands and now I love lots of indie rock bands too.
I wasn't taken seriously as a 12-year-old girl metalhead, so I forced myself to only listen to metal to be taken seriously... At 14-16 I slowly started brancing out to other genres... Now I'm 26.
i wholeheartedly agree with this. i listen to pretty much everything, but i'm always discovering songs or artists that i'd constantly skipped over and realizing they're really good and it reminds me that there's so much good music in the world for you to go find
I've struggled with branching out with new music, but this year I've done so much of it. There is still so many albums I need to listen to. If it wasn't for you and other music channels, I wouldn't have fallen in love with some of my favorite artists. Because of your channel, I'm probably the most educated music student in my class now xD so thank you
There are sites with expanding charts. You put in an artist you like and it will show you artists that sound like the original artist and if you like one of them, you can click on the new band's name and it will give you more artists.
Jon, thanks to you I've found tons of new artists. Because of you I've found Jon Bellion, Brand New, CHVRCHES, The 1975, Melanie Martinez, DNCE, even Green Day for god's sake. Don't feel discouraged that your reviews are pointless, I've gotten tons of new music from you. 😃
I was stuck in that mindset years ago about the same age range as you. I just turned 25, and things are so different. I listen to many different genres and artists, and my friends that are still stuck in that place think its bizarre. If I'm being honest though since finding your channels I've been much happier when I'm listening to music. I take your reviews and opinions in, and they mean something to me. We're kind of on the same wave length when it comes to music. I've listened to so much that I didn't think I ever would, and I enjoyed quite a lot of it. Even after the weird year that was 2016 I'd like to thank you. Even after seeing your video of being burned out on music and albums and how you cut back a little on reviews, you still put a lot of content out. Hopefully 2017 will be better, and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us viewers! :)
Iam WZORD Melanie Martinez or the 1975? Maybe some synth pop stuff like Chairlift could work. Jaymes Young is a pretty good singer/song writer that you could consider to have more of a pop sound. Depends on if you care more about lyrics, sound or an equal mix of the two for which bands and artists you'll actually like.
One of your best videos my man! I personally could never be complacent with music because music is such a big part of my life. No matter how many bands/artists I have listened to, I still feel like I've only scratched the surface.
This used to be me with the Pop Rock trio (Coldplay, OneRepublic, Imagine Dragons). But then I started branching out. I got into much better bands imo (except Coldplay. They remain my favorite band of all time). Ever since I started watching you, I've gotten into so many new genres of music. Now I love genres like Electronic, Synthpop, Baraque Pop, Ambient, Jazz, etc.
Hey I like to listen to a lot or rock and some pop stuff like Paramore and Green Day 21 Pilots Chvrches and a few more but I'm really interesting in trying some rap music any rappers you recommend?
Try some Lupe Fiasco as well. He's one of my favorites. Mm, especially Tetsuo and Youth. Also try: Atmosphere, Childish Gambino, A Tribe Called Quest... (I agree with Kendrick Lamar, Doomtree, J Cole and Kanye!)
I recommend some classic albums too. A Tribe Called Quest "The Low End Theory" (jazz rap) Nas "Illmatic" (street poetry at its finest) Kanye West "The College Dropout" (great soul samples and versatile songwriting) The Notorious BIG "Ready to Die" (some hardcore hip hop to get some attitude in) Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" (changed the game in terms of usage of samples) I have some other favorites, but those are decent starting points.
im glad I broadened my variety. FUN. is my favorite pop band especially their first album Aim and Ignite, but I enjoy metal core, pop punk, a little bit of hip hop and some metal I think it's good to have an open mind when it comes to music.
I try to listen to a new album everyday on average. It's important to not only listen to new artists, but different genres as well. Shoegaze, Industrial, Black Metal, Ambient, Post Rock, Post Punk, Abstract Hip Hop, Drone, Avant Folk, Trip Hop and Downtempo, and Post Hardcore (actually good post hardcore like Fugazi, Big Black, etc.). There's so much crazy shit out there and even if you don't like everything, it's still entertaining to hear something you've never heard before.
See what my thing was when I was back in like high school and middle school it was like if you didn't listen to the same kind of rap or pop music everyone else listened to you got made fun of so I kind of got pressured into the mainstream stuff but now that I'm older and in college now and I stopped caring about what other people said about the type of music I like and I couldn't be more proud in my taste of music you could say lol
I totally agree with you here. I used to be a narrow minded music fan but in the last few years I've started listening to different genres and styles of music which helped me to decide what I prefer in my music taste, my taste in music is so varied nowadays
What do you listen to?
Eloise is a 5sos Phangirl I thank my friends who introduced me into different artists
they are an inspiration and a blessing for me to get out of the box 😎😁
Luis Murillo Rivera As I say, my music taste varies a lot but some of the bands/artists I like-
5sos, Eminem, Ed Sheran, Iron Maiden, MCR, All time low, Muse etc
eloiseisnotonfire me too
alltimelester That’s not really varied
Twenty one pilots fans do this kind of thing allllll the time. Can't have an educated conversation with a good amount of them
I guess we just love tøp WAYYY too much 😂
Unkn0wnZ I used to love Twenty one pilots when they first released Vessel then blurryface came out and the fans became unbearable
I guess that's because the fanbase grew in number A LOT when Stressed Out got released, a hit single from Blurryface. I'll admit, I'm one of the people who got introduced to TØP that way 😂
VZ Matthews yeah true they like to act like Twenty one pilots created music or something
#NotAllClique
i got into the beatles bc of panic! at the disco 🙏🏻
Pretty Odd had huge Beatles influences, so I could see being a Panic fan who goes back to listen to their sources.
Nathan Ritscherle so many albums I love were inspired by the Beatles yet I hate the Beatles 😂😂
The wolf howls clearly borrow from the ambient sounds of "a day in the life."
calohtar For example, most rap had extremely little Beatles influence.
I actually listened to CHVRCHES just because I was sick of looking at that poster of yours and I love them now.
Jak Dee THAT'S FANTASTIC!
Jak Dee lol
Lauren has one of the sweetest voices I've ever heard.
I found out about tøp, Mewithoutyou, X Ambassadors and Chvrches from Paramore. So I'm really glad I follow Paramore
I did the same thing lol
I generally love pop punk, metal, Metalcore, rock, and alternative. But I also dip my hands in rap and pop but it's mostly stuff that you reviewed and gave a good score to.
Same jon's recommendation defo help keep some variation in my playlists.
A7X Fan foREVer if you like rock and rap, try linkin park ( you probably already listen to them)
Yeah i do! I am very excited for their new album that never seems to be coming.
do you listen to MAIDEN the greatest metal band
I pretty much listen to anything if it's good. It doesn't matter what genre.
My least favorite is when people say that "*insert genre here* isn't REAL music. It takes NO talent!"
What type of music are you talking about?
idk if it's the same for the original commenter, but personally I hear that criticism the most for pop and rap.
people: omg you listen to emo and metal? everybody, we have a school shooter!!!
wolf pack winter HONESTLY THOUGH OR LIKE ASSOCIATE US WITH MUSICALLY KIDS WHO USE HEATHENS AS A LIPSYNC SONG AHDHFJEJBFN
+Venomous Vince agree, those people are so stupid
okay i also fucking HATE when people say they're a fan of a band or artist and they ONLY know like the 3 biggest hits. like come onnnnnnnn you're missing out so bad it hurts me
Especially when the hits are some of the weakest tracks, ugh
To some it looks like is 'offensive".
well i'm just saying there's a lot of people who don't bother to expand into their discography which sucks but yeah the posers piss me off as well
indeed this is a big problem in today's music fans!!!!!!!!!
i agree. it's like "person, for your own GOOD you need to listen to it all" lol. but i think the term "fan" is more weighted nowadays, it means you love most or all of a band's discography and also like the members as people too, not just that you casually like a few songs
I'm not a Christian but even I will give a big amen to this video
lmao
Wrestling with Reality lol
Wrestling with Reality I'm not religious but I use the word amen just as a word and not a religious thing 😂😂
TRIGGERED. lol. jk.
Ketter! Op de brandstapel. Moge christus u verbannen naar Wallonie!
How did I know when you gave your example of people listening to the same 3 artists, one of them were gonna be twenty one pilots?
OffLeatherWings cool profile pic 😎
OffLeatherWings gave a thumbs up for AJ Styles
OffLeatherWings It's always Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At The Disco and MCR/Fall Out Boy.
lol I'm not even mad, I listened to basically nothing but tøp for almost a year. it's really true
James Dryden is it weird that mcr are my favorite band but I never got into panic! Or fob?
I see this a lot in people who listen to nothing but classic rock and think "today's music is just garbage." I can kinda understand older folks who grew up in the classic rock era, but people really need to branch out because there is a lot of modern-day music that is fantastic and genuine!
Alt Columnist as long as its not Meghan Trainor
Alt Columnist you know what you do, put on Flight of the know by Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears. It reminds me of a mix of back boys, jazz, and is a concept album!
I'm actually 17 and I like a lot better older stuff
There's nothing wrong with liking older stuff more but there is a problem with belittling people who prefer newer music.
+Marc D that's so awesome to hear. Big kudos to you for pushing yourself
I hope you can give them a try (I am not expecting you to make a video about them but I wanted to share "something possibly new"):
Chikita Violenta - Laydown
Car Crash Sisters - All my friends live underwater
Jenny and the Mexicats - Anthem Song
Biggot - She is my man
Austin TV - Shiva
Big big love - Eurydice
I can Chase Dragons - Gold Coast
Rey Pila - No Longer Fun
Nortec Collective - Clorophile
Guincho - Bombay
Wet Baes - Don't Go
Ana Tijoux - Shock (she raps in Spanish but she is something worth listening just because of the rhythm)
Unicorn Lady (formerly archiecook55) but literally is the only thing she listens to. Everytime she wants to put music she only wants Hamilton
Ok well in that case I agree that's a problem.
@@twentyonespookypilots4280 Does your friend still do that?
Same here!
yeah. i go to instagram and tumblr and the accounts that i come across always have a bio that lists about 3 artists: melanie martinez, halsey, and twentyonepilots....
and then they go on to act all edgy and critisize the mainstream pop music listeners for being sheep, as if the music they listen to makes them so different and openminded.
Discovering new artists is one of the best things in the world too.
Same it's really exciting when u hear something for the first time. It's like "where has this been all my life!" 😱
You want new bands? Try out the band Starset.
+Tonny Bivans cool, they sound great liking 'my demons' good beat to it! :)
Have u got a favourite song by them?
Now i've heard Vessels about twenty times. IT'S SO FUCKING GOOD!
Or they just didn't like what you showed them, you know that's a possibility.
They probably won't view rock and metal as music anyway, and that's what pisses me off. Nonetheless, becoming a part of the Children of the Korn was the best moment of my life
I have friends who say "I listen to everything" when all they ever talk about is Johnny Cash and Katy Perry
I'm still kinda creating my alley, and probably will for the rest of my life.
an idea: maybe you should make a series in which you talk about which artists you should check out if you like soandso band. for example if you like Green Day you should definitely check out bands like VANT (for real check out VANT, they're working on their debut album currently but their karma seeker ep is a gem) and Neck Deep. i know you just said a lot of people don't care but i know a lot of people do, i love finding new artists and i'm pretty sure enough other people do as well
Yess VANT is so good
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA YES
hell yeah man! i'm glad you like them! check out swmrs as well while you're at it :D they have a similar sound to vant, and billie joe's son Joey is on the drums
Hanna de Vries checkout my music
Hanna de Vries kenfolk rainzero
That's why I like Spotify, it gives you artists you might enjoy if you enjoy the artist you're listening too.
Right, that's awesome. Because of Spotify I met The New Pornographers and Sunny Day Real State.
It really annoys me when people only listen to Top 40 music. That's what my mom does and she thinks the music I listen to is way too out there, even though I don't listen very abrasive genre's like metal.
Same here but with school because the stuff I like it's not popular (not on radio) - they don't know it so they make fun of it kinda thing. 🙄
I don't hate other music genres I just mostly listen to pop punk, rock etc.
Same fam
i used to HATE pop punk and here I am now it's one of my favorite genres
Baileyy M it's about finding the right pop punk bands and albums imo bc a lot of them are annoying af but the good ones are amazing
Amir Palamar jeff rosenstock! came out with prob aoty for me
Max Katsoolis nice I'll listen to the album later today
Exactly, I get that not everyone has the time and pasion to listen to entire discographies, and that's fine.
Yes definitely I have to really force myself to check out new music because I like to stay in my comfort zone most of the time. I want to want to listen to a wide variety of music but I almost never find that to be the case. I think people need to learn how to understand other people.
I gave 5 Seconds of Summer a try. Despite finding a small handful of actually decent songs, no. They suck ass.
I also don't know why radio stations find the need to play the same freaking songs over and over!
I was like that about 18 months ago.... I'm better now though
Same man
I was like that about three years ago because i read a stupid youtube comment and believed it. i feel robbed
Sean Kearns same here 2 years ago
Love your profile pic
Ellis jones-hawes Shakira?
Enter shikari kicks ass.
love shikari!
+Don't Cry Craft Cloud Rap?
I adore that genre ^-^
What you mean by vapor wave,?
I love lo fi hip hop too. They're so relaxing and cool
Oh yeah. I discovered it through a game oddly enough called Donut County and ended up going down a rabbit hole of chillhop and lofi hiphop. Channels
There's SO much good music out there!
imagine only listening to twenty one pilots and green day i can't even comprehend how people live like that
honestly, don't say you're into music when you only listen to like two bands...
My whole family likes to listen to the same songs over and over again. I'm the weirdo/rebel kid for branching out and enjoying rock music
I agree (even tho I have to say, even as someone who somewhat supports 1d, that 1D music's quality still isnt all that great)
oh yes yES I feel you
You know as a pretentious music nerd myself. You have a LONG way to go. The journey I made and am still making is a fun and fatiguing task. But I’m glad you’re open to new stuff and that’s great. Unlike a co worker of mine who cannot branch out and is still listening to the same old shit🙄
don't forget the Christian alt rock group who only listens to Red, skillet, and TFK lol
branm25
I do listen to Skillet and Thousand Foot Krutch, and I saw Red live as an opening band for Breaking Benjamin
I listen to all sorts of music from Metal to Pop. But my personal favourite is listening to experimental music :)
What's experimental music?
*genres
Yeah I discovered 2 new bands thanks to his album of the year countdown video. they were: Microwave and Everything Everything
Jimmy M I love Courtney Barnett too, she's so talented :)
Great video! I agree with you 100%. I grew up listening to the radio but once I started going to shows and seeing opening bands I branched out a lot musically. I actually stopped listening to the radio in 2006 bc of boredom and replays of the same songs.
I used to just listen to twenty one pilots, and now I listen to grunge, alternative rock, classic rock, hard rock, metal, etc.
I totally agree. I used to only like pop music but recently I've been getting into alternative, rock, punk, r&b, singer songwriter, electronic, and rap. I totally agree with you. You have to step out of your comfort zone with music.
Fav bands:
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
The Clash
Sex Pistols
Gorillaz
Ramones
Misfits
Green Day
Nice list! What's your favorite Pink Floyd album and song?
Julia Catty Fav song is "Welcome To The Machine" Fav Album "Animals"
This is literally all my friends. I listen to almost everything that sounds good. Pop/Rock , Grime, R&B, Hip Hop etc.
But my friends only listen to Grime since that what is popular where i live, so when i play songs i like they are always like "turn this shit off"
And its so annoying because they never branch out or listen to other music they just stick in their little bubble.
The only genre I find it most difficult to listen to is Pop. Lady Gaga is the only pop artist I could listen to at the moment. Alternative, Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Bachata are what I mainly listen to.
+Captain Kon'Doriano hey you've tried it out though you're doing the right thing. You aren't just shutting it down without sampling it
I used to only listen to pop punk, post hardcore, alternative, etc.
I listen to a little bit of everything
i discovered great bands like basement, microwave, SWMRS, wolf alice, and car seat headrest because of you, Jon. and if not for you, i wouldn't have discovered that i like indie rock so thanks a lot! xx
My brother would be one of those people if it weren't for me. He used to be one of those people that only listened to mcr, fob, and p!atd.
Genres of electronic music I like/will listen to: Electronic metal, electronic rock (fusions, how I love them), Drum 'n' Bass (if original enough), electronica, synthwave, dubstep, EDM (though these later two I do not actively seek out)
Miscellaneous genres I appreciate: Classical music/orchestral, jazz, a capella, choral music.
I used to be that annoying person who only listened to Twenty One Pilots, Panic! at the Disco and Melanie Martinez. Thankfully I outgrew that.
I like Halsey's "Badlands" album, woooOOOPS, I said it
it's a decent album, good taste.
TLC!! My favourite girl group of all time
I’ve always been a “small minded” music listener not because I like it but I have to really force myself to check out new music because I like to stay in my comfort zone most of the time.
It's good to see people talking about this, as an indie rock fan I've always found it great to check out as many artists and genres as I can
For people who love "emo" music. These bands influenced most of the 2000s scene
American Football
Jimmy Eat World
Jawbreaker
The Cure
Promise Ring
Rites of Spring
Bahaus
Sunny Day Real Estate
Box Car Racer
Siouxie and the Banshees
Also I hate it when people say they were "born in the wrong generation." Personally, I think it's sort of a dumb thing to say
Exactly! Jon got me into Portugal. The Man and La Dispute just by watching his videos! It's one of the reasons I am subscribed to this channel in the first place! (Hannah also got me into Basement, so thanks Hannah)
AND BRAND NEW! HOW COULD I FORGET!!!
My dad is the same way. He refuses to listen to anyone other than def leppard or Styx. Every other band on the planet is bad in his mind no matter who it is. He told me Green Day was trash and that blink 182 should have never started playing music. The fuck!
Cool! thats you're opinion.
👏FINALLY👏THANK👏YOU👏FOR👏THIS👏VIDEO👏
It's been 2 years since you uploaded this video and yet it's still as relevant as ever. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.
Halsey is a Tumblr ripoff of Lorde
I've struggled with branching out with new music, but this year I've done so much of it. There is still so many albums I need to listen to. If it wasn't for you and other music channels, I wouldn't have fallen in love with some of my favorite artists. Because of your channel, I'm probably the most educated music student in my class now xD so thank you
I hate feeling like im in a music rut. It's suffocating, honestly.
There are sites with expanding charts. You put in an artist you like and it will show you artists that sound like the original artist and if you like one of them, you can click on the new band's name and it will give you more artists.
orlock20
sounds like something I should try, any specific sites you can recommend?
Joy Charisma
Music roamer and music-map.
orlock20 cool thank you!
As a man with a 900 song playlist ranging from 80's pop - deathcore and a lot inbetween, I feel ya John, I feel ya.
pop music is the only genre that i don't listen to, simply because Im yet to find an artist that i can appreciate.
Maybe Owl City? Just a recommendation
Try the album Native by Onerepublic.
Iam WZORD cold play, bruno mars, adele, marina and the diamonds, aleissa cara are some pop acts that have some great songs :-)
Iam WZORD well there are some pop artists that are actually good
One of your best videos my man! I personally could never be complacent with music because music is such a big part of my life. No matter how many bands/artists I have listened to, I still feel like I've only scratched the surface.
I can’t listen to most modern pop music. It makes me cringe
The reason why I subscribed to your channel was to discover new bands and artists and you really helped so far
Do problems i have with Melanie Martinez!
+Jake sure!
Kendrick Lanar
Joey Bada$$
Ab-Soul
Run the Jewels
Doomtree
J Cole
Kanye West (start with older stuff)
Try some Lupe Fiasco as well. He's one of my favorites. Mm, especially Tetsuo and Youth.
Also try: Atmosphere, Childish Gambino, A Tribe Called Quest...
(I agree with Kendrick Lamar, Doomtree, J Cole and Kanye!)
I recommend some classic albums too.
A Tribe Called Quest "The Low End Theory" (jazz rap)
Nas "Illmatic" (street poetry at its finest)
Kanye West "The College Dropout" (great soul samples and versatile songwriting)
The Notorious BIG "Ready to Die" (some hardcore hip hop to get some attitude in)
Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" (changed the game in terms of usage of samples)
I have some other favorites, but those are decent starting points.
Jake
I listen to the same stuff as you, except Green Day. I would really recommend NF HE IS AN AMAZING RAPPER BELIEVE ME!
Also try out the Hilltop Hoods, Chance the Rapper and Tkay Maidza if you get the chance.
im glad I broadened my variety. FUN. is my favorite pop band especially their first album Aim and Ignite, but I enjoy metal core, pop punk, a little bit of hip hop and some metal I think it's good to have an open mind when it comes to music.
