Here's why you never walk your pets, or let your kids near ponds, cricks, bodies of water in general in Florida.

Some lakes are ok. I grew up on Doctors Lake in northern Fla and while there are some gators in there, they are culled and the big ones continuously removed. It’s perfectly safe to swim in. That said, one must be familiar with the particular body of water one is in.
Retention ponds are an entirely different story…

@@TRAZ4004 I'm sorry but coexistence is apparently the Human idea of building a community on and or near the habitat of alligators, unsurprisingly being attacked by said alligators, and then shooting and killing them for being too close to a Human community that is only there in the first place because Humans decided to build on top of the them and their natural habitat.
Sorry, but this is nature... "co-existing". You imply it's so horrible for Humans and alligators to live so close to one another, but who is it that needs to be the one to move away? The answer is obvious when compared to the animal that has been living in these kinds of habitats since the Triassic. You're a flabby, soft and squishy primate with no natural weapons and no natural defenses, and you're surrounded by a world full of REAL animals and predators, many having evolved for millions of years longer than you have, such as alligators.
You're surrounded on all sides, if your answer is to eradicate and wipe out various species upholding a balance that has existed for billions of years and threatening their livelihood... well then Humans shouldn't be boasting about how 'smart' and 'advanced' they are.

Many reports of older people being caught when out walking their dogs. Not everyone can out run an agressinve gator, they have sprint speed people are not aware of.

I’m not even from the south and I can tell that alligators are much more docile and calm natured than people think. If you leave them alone, they’ll leave you alone. Don’t walk up to them and let it do its business. Mind you if I happened to visit Florida and saw one while walking, I’d still probably crap my pants, but I’d know realistically the chances of me being in danger were very very low.
Crocs, on the other hand, are a completely different story. Extremely aggressive and aren’t choosy about their prey. They will attack and eat you because it can. They don’t discriminate what’s food or not food. Gators 99.9% of the time will not register an adult human as a food option. They’re too big.

@tac7826 im prettys sure thats sharks. Crocodillians (gators included) can stomach rotting meat and eat chunks without chewing so taste is not really something they look for. Gators are just not big enough to see humans as easy meals. I'm not arguing that an alligator cant kill a human, Im saying that a human can put up a decent fight against a gator and for them its not worth the risk if they can find easier animals to eat. Crocs on the other hand can grow above 20 feet and have been known to prey on buffalo, so humans are an easy meal for them. Lolong the largest crocodile was captured by using a full grown live water buffalo as bait.
