Narnia- Puddleglums Heroic Speech

- The Silver Chair (1990)-
Our three misfit heroes meet the Queen of the Underworld, who has imprisoned and brainwashed the Prince of Narnia, Rillian. She works the same tactics on the three again, making them forget about their true home. It's up to the Puddleglum the Marshwiggle to save the day!!
I added the fight scene for your amusement.
This is my favourite movie (or mini-series) out of the 4 that where made. Tom Baker (Dr. Who!!) did a superb job as a marshwiggle!!!
10/10 Развлечения
There will never be a Puddleglum as good as Tom Baker.
Bernard Cribbins did a creditable job in the BBC Radio version.
@Greg Elchert Did you know that Ron Moody was almost Dr. Who? He was first on the production team's short list when the time came for Pat Troughton to leave the show. Moody was unavailable, so the role went to Jon Pertwee-- whose name was second on that same list! :-)
But wouldn't David Tennet be a marvelous Puddleglum? 🤔
Puddleglum never loses his cool
He’s polite but firm and stands up for himself and his friends
Absolute GOAT
Tom Baker, even when he's not the Doctor, he's the Doctor.
Wrong! He's always been Tom Baker, even before the Doctor!
Nobody loses their shit like Barbara Kellerman. She could yell the skin off a rice pudding!
Tom Baker was perfect
That's the kind of speech The Doctor would had made.
Depends on the season.
I think that just might be the Doctor.
This is Tom Baker.
@@davidrivera9743 Why do you think I said "That's the kind of speech The Doctor would had made"?
@@danielwilliamson6180 because it took a couple of listens and a gap between when Classic Doctor Who, was in regular rotation on PBS and the second time I saw this to put 2+2 together.
I feel like such an idiot not realizing that it was Tom Baker as Puddleglum the same man who did the 4th Doctor. After watching these I should have realized it the first time.
I knew of Tom Baker from this.
P Ferreira Same - this was my first exposure to Tom Baker, way back when it had just come out. I didn't even watch Classic Who until just a few years ago.
@@TheBeatfox Same!!! I watched this before knowing about his famous role with Jelly Babies!!!
Not to be a noodge, but his name was in the credits.
We must have seen these adaptations a million times when we were kids. Sure, the special effect haven't aged well, but the acting is absolutely top notch. That evil queen still freaks me out to this day.
You can see the evil queen shuddering with sheer rage, just as she’s about to turn into the serpent… I mean cobra lol.
@@80sDude990 A cobra is a serpent.
The effects are fine, especially when you consider how innovative they had to be, given the budget.
@@MaskedMan66 True.
@@MaskedMan66 a cobra stretches out the skin on its neck to look threatening, if the need to do so arises. Serpents don’t do this, their necks don’t stretch out.
When the Green Lady shouts, “HOW DARE YOU THREATEN ME!” while Puddleglum is basically telling her what a shithole her world is, notice how he gives a little shudder, but carries on and finishes his heroic speech.
Such fantastic acting.
He's reacting to the pain in his hand.
@@MaskedMan66 it was the pain in his hand, that made it easier for Puddleglum to think more clearly. He paved the way for defeating the queen, soon followed by the destruction of the Deep Realm.
@@80sDude990 He would give all the credit to Aslan. 🙂 And of course in the book, it was his foot.
@@MaskedMan66 that’s right it was changed from the book, being Puddleglum’s foot that got burnt originally.
As a child I was one of the children. As an adult I am now Pluddlglum!
As would happen, I shouldn't wonder...
Same, it could be worse, we could slugs in our salads, or shrews in our stews
But it will get worse I dare say
I absolutely Love Tom Baker as Puddleglum:The Marshwiggle. The Silver Chair is My Number One Favorite movie because of Tom Baker and He is my Favorite Doctor Who. His multi-colored scarf is Absolutely COOL. Forget bowties.
I mean, the 4th Doctor is obviously the best. The 11th is the next in line. Moffat's era is the closest we've had to a merger of Narnia and Doctor Who since The BBC's Silver Chair.
And bowties most certainly are cool.
This is a T.V. minseries, not a movie.
Do you know who played Puddleglum in the BBC Radio version? Bernard Cribbins!
@@barelyprotestant5365 You obviously haven't seen the Third Doctor.
Guess the Queen of the Underworld won't be getting any jelly babies today lol I had to make the joke
That...
That was absolutely perfect. Thank you for that. Here, have a jelly baby!
Aaron McCleod god she's even hotter than THE RANI !! [WAIT I HAVEN'T MET HER YET!! OR HAVE I!!] I had to make that joke as well!!
Ha! I clicked through to here because I saw the still and thought, "Did Tom Baker play Puddleglum?" XD
@@pvtrichter88 Tom dealt with the Rani in "Dimensions in Time."
I always thought that Puddleglum looked and sounded an awful lot like my Grandfather on my mother's side. I once told him this an I don't know to this day whether he was amused, befuddled, or flattered.
Here on the west coast among all this smoke, beginning to feel like a marshwiggle! I need the sun!
Green Lady: Who the bloody hell are you?
Puddleglum: I am The Doctor! 😂
Better than that, he's Puddleglum.
That was the crummiest "snake" I've ever seen in a motion picture...and one million times better than the 2010 Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
This is a T.V. miniseries, not a motion picture. And special effects could not save those wretched movies.
God it's so crazy to look at this show again after so much time. This was my least favorite of the BBC movies but Puddleglum stood out. It wasn't until recently that I realized he's The Doctor. Absolutely fantastic! Even if the affects are decidedly less so ;)
Caldain they weren’t movies they were episodes.
@@thefonzkiss It was a miniseries.
I understand that they were economizing by having Barbara Kellerman play Jadis, the Hag, and the Green Lady, but she really was miscast as the latter. When reading "The Silver Chair," I got the image of a sweet-faced, surprisingly young-looking character who looked as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, and of a very gentle demeanor with a lilting, girlish voice.
I think some people think that the Green Lady is also the White Witch just in different form (you can see that on Wiki) but I don't really think so and I agree they should be differently cast
@@ying2217 Yeah, the White Witch died at Aslan's paws.
@@ying2217 In the books, the "Parliament of Owls" speculate that "this may be one of the same crew".
@@joshuagoodman5267 And I've never been sure what they meant by that, since Jadis was the last survivor of her world.
@@MaskedMan66 Yeah - I've got a few thoughts on that.
(A) "The Silver Chair" was written before "The Magician's Nephew", so Lewis hadn't written all of the lore yet.
(B) I'd find it entirely possible that the White Witch would make a coven under her guidance and tutelage, and her disciples would then make the bondage and destruction of Narnia their ultimate goal.
(C) The statement was also speculation on the owls' part; while at least a very good guess, it does leave some room for doubt (also the owls wouldn't know about the dead world Charn).
He's the Doctor! He's trying to achieve amazing!!!
He achieved it ages ago!
Fun Fact: Camilla Power, who plays Jill here, played Lucy in the BBC Radio version of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" along with her brother Henry as Edmund.
puddleglum a true follower of the Aslan
Look out! Its ah rubber snake! 🤯🥶
And those are actors in costumes. And that's a set, not really an underground cavern.
Learn about suspension of disbelief.
There really is a resemblence! Ahhhhh!!! lol Tom Baker + Puddleglum= love
I am in love with you, Puddleglum
Well, yes, you say that now, but how long will that last? Probably throw me over for a younger Marsh-wiggle, I shouldn't wonder.
You tell her, Doctor Who!
He's better than Doctor Who, he's Puddleglum!
@Teh13Doctors The fact that it's the DOCTOR crying out to Aslan just makes this that much better.
It's not the Doctor, it's Puddleglum.
@@MaskedMan66 It's Tom Baker. Best known for his portrayal of the fourth Doctor.
@@AtarahDerek I first saw him as the Doctor in the late 1970's. But he's not playing the Doctor here any more than he was playing the Doctor in _Nicholas and Alexandra._ ;-)
This is crazy because I had no idea that Puddleglum was Tom Baker, but I had a crush on both PG and the Doctor as a kid, so at least my attraction is consistent.
You didn't see the credits?
she's so deliciously over the top. I love it. She really made these movies stick in my head
Her performance style worked for Jadis, but not for the Green Lady. In the book, she was much more low key.
This isn't a movie, it's a T.V. miniseries.
@@MaskedMan66no, this’s a movie.
@@INTJ10551 It's a T.V. miniseries; I was there when it was first broadcast.

The Doctor is everywhere! In the wizarding World (David Tennant), in Middle Earth (Sylvester McCoy), in the world of Thor (Christopher Eccleston) and now in Narnia (Tom Baker).
David Tennant would make a good Puddleglum in a film adaptation.
And Star Wars...at least twice.
@@Warriorcats64 Both Tom and David, yes.
There are only fifty actors in England.
@@MaskedMan66 I think the Doctor is just everywhere.
btw that fight scene blew my mind.
Existentialism in five minutes. A worthy heir of Camus. We must imagine Puddleglum, at that moment, happy.
Actually, it's a Christian apologetic. Lewis' point in this is that atheism is a fruitless worldview, and that if atheism were true it would be better to at least pretend that there is God and a purpose for our lives because we'd go on existentially fulfilled and die none-the-wiser, whereas with atheism we "discover the truth" (allegedly) and only gain meaninglessness for it.
@@barelyprotestant5365 Lewis was also working from Greek philosophy, in particular Plato's allegory of the Cave, and turning it to Christian purposes.
Aslan!!!🌠😍🦁
Ahahaha I forgot how terrible the transformation effects were! still, these movies beat the new ones any day. And this was pretty much the best of them.
I thought they were great effects!
They scared me when I was seven, and they still scare the bejeezus out of my kids.
It was rather well-done, actually.
There’s bits and pieces about these versions I remember vividly as an adult.
This speech and that HORRIFYING transformation are among them.
2:10 poor girl is screaming at how bad the special effects are
If you can't suspend disbelief, you shouldn't be watching fantasy T.V. shows in the first place.
Seriously Tom Baker is the best part of that movie.
T.V. miniseries, not movie.
Favorite moment in the whole NARNIA series, I mean. Although it would be pretty sweet if something very similar did happen in a sci-fi series like Dr. Who.
It belonged to a book a decade before there ever was a DW.
Yeah - I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have the whole speech from the book when I was younger, but this scene was my FAVORITE scene in the entirety of the old BBC Narnia series.
@@joshuagoodman5267 Less of the "old," thank you! Shall we say, "classic?"
Oh great, more Dr. Who. I suppose sometime I'll have to watch this series everyone seems to be so obsessed with.
That said, this is one of my favorite moments in the whole series. Puddleglum's creed is my creed as well. I'm on Jesus' side even if there's no Jesus to lead it! I'm going to live as like a citizen of heaven as I can even if there is no heaven!
Thanks for your comment that Gets the POINT!
Of course both Jesus and Heaven are real! And Tom has done so much more than just DW.
Yay Puddleglum!
He would correct you and tell you to say, "Yay Aslan!" 🙂
bwahahaha!! i looked this up specifically because i wanted to see the queen's transformation again. definitely the best part xD
2:12 onwards makes me lol :3
I could die happy if fellow Doctor, Peter Capaldi played a new Puddleglum.
That was just Tom Baker chewing the scenery. The man can stock a deli all by himself.
Didn't even realize that Tom Baker was in this. When I saw it originally I hadn't even heard of Doctor Who. I also can't help but notice the contrast between Tom Baker's "theatrical" acting and the Queen's OVERacting. It's like Tom goes right to the brink and she goes straight overboard.
Barbara Kellerman's style worked perfectly for the White Witch, but she was horribly miscast as the Lady of the Green Kirtle.
How dare you threaten me!!
HOW DAAAARE YOU THREATEN ME-UH!
😂
Villainy 101: do not turn into a snake. It never helps.
Lewis makes it pretty clear that the Green Lady had basically lost it at this point.
It worked for Jafar until Aladdin started talking
@@Wolfbane8 Operative word: "until."
Thank you, Doctor. You have saved us once again
Aslan did the saving.
I love puddleglum
This is indeed wonderful and as Daniel Williamson says, very much in the spirit of the doctor -- especially the fourth 4th doctor!
No, in the spirit of Puddleglum. That's who Tom's playing here, not the Doctor.
So when they make the new version of SC, which Doctor should play Puddleglum? :D I think Eccleston could pull it off. I don't think Tennant would suit the role. Tennant's better at playing bipolar characters, and Puddleglum's not bipolar. Matt Smith will probably be available by that time. He might make a good marshwiggle.
Of those three, I only see Eccleston as doing it. He has the build, the dour face, and don't forget, Puddleglum is from the Northern part of Narnia!
I never knew Tom Baker was in a Narnia film.
Me neither, and I had all the the BBC Narnia movies on VHS when I was a kid and watched them quite frequently. I've also been into Classic Doctor Who for the past six years, I really can't believe I didn't notice this sooner.
He wasn't; he was in a Narnia T.V. series.
Green Lady: "What are you doing mud filth?!"
Puddleglum: "I am about to end this lady's whole career."
Puddleglum wouldn't say that, because he knew that Aslan would be doing the ending-- as he ended the White Witch.
I kind of want to know what made them decide to change things from Puddleglum kicking the fire out to his putting his hand in it.
Scarcely matters; the effect was the same.
I didn't think Jill was supposed to stand there and scream...and Eustace was supposed to help kill the snake!
In the book, Jill backed into a chair and tried not to faint; remember, this was only her first Narnain adventure.
I love the silver chair the best out of all 7 Narnia
If you were confused by the seemingly-ambiguous meaning of the final scene of “Inception”, this will explain it for you.
@dlweiss She attempted this before the Evil Overlord List was published. So you can't really fault her. :)
Sorry, what?
0:45 Fantastic acting by Tom Baker.
I was wondering how Puddleglum changed the fire back to normal, then I remembered, "He's the Doctor! His body is designed to channel and direct energy. He must have absorbed the fire, therefore dampening the spell she cast on it."
Watching this scene alone feels like a Doctor Who episode.
No, that was Aslan's power, the same power that transformed the shield. Actually, in the book, Puddleglum stamped out the fire with his foot, and it had to heal naturally.
@@MaskedMan66 I think it’s safe to say Jill is scared of snakes. She screamed the place down… wait a minute, the Deep Realm did start self destructing, pretty soon after the snake queen’s head was cut off.
@@80sDude990 Jill had fears, but Lewis did not list snakes among them. This was her first Narnian adventure and she had not been in any fights yet.
@@MaskedMan66 one of Jill’s fears is of enclosed underground spaces. The poor girl suffers from claustrophobia.
@@80sDude990 Correct, but like the heroine she was to become, she faced that fear and conquered it. 🙂
I would not have thought prince rillian would have brown hair and a beard...i thought he'd be like caspian the 10th, blonod hair fair skin....
In the book, he was blond and clean-shaven; in fact, Lewis remarked that he looked like Hamlet.
The thing is, viewers had already seen what he looked like in the flashbacks, so something had to be done to make it not quite so obvious, especially for viewers who hadn't read the book.
coooooooool
@RionaNaCeilteach I think they should get one of his successors. Like Eccleston or Smith.
I also think David Nykl (Stargate Atlantis) would do well in the role, but they'd need to make him look taller.
Eccleston would nail it.
In the book, he used his foot to stamp the fire out, thus ceasing the fumes. I don't know what they were trying to achieve here.
Natalie M. Yes I know what you mean. Notice how Puddleglum tests the heat of the fire, then puts his hand in for real, “Aslan! Aslan!” And yes in the book he stamped the fire out with his foot, that’s more believable than by hand, as the weight of his body was behind the stamping out. He didn’t call on Aslan’s name either. Speaking of which Aslan earlier showed up at Harfang twice; when Jill dreamt he appeared to her and when she called to him the next morning while with Eustace and Puddleglum. How come Aslan didn’t materialise in underland when he appears everywhere else? Maybe it was too much for him.
They were trying to achieve Tom Baker not straining his leg trying to step on that elevated brazier.
@@80sDude990 Nothing is too much for Aslan. Whom do you think changed Rilian's shield?
@@MaskedMan66 Rilian’s shield. Speaking of Tirian, I found it incredible how in The Last Battle, he told Eustace and Jill that Rilian had been dead for over two-hundred years. Originally this book didn’t follow on directly from The Silver Chair, it was The Horse and His Boy. The Magician’s Nephew came along next, but was a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. No wonder CS Lewis must have felt the need to say Rilian was dead for all of those years!
@@80sDude990 Whoops! My bad! It's just feeling very "Last Battle" here in the States lately.
Actually, LB does directly follow SC in internal chronology; it's 200 years later in Narnia and three or four years later in England. HHB took place during the reign of the Pevensie siblings, two of whom (Susan and Edmund) have featured roles in it.
Wow this is powerful when you actually think about it compared to the real battle in life between the serpent and us
oh was this a miniseries on british tv? i never knew there were dramatizations of the other Narnia stories! i only seen the few movies that were made and always wished they made movies of the other stories too
The movies were terrible, and sadly the T.V. versions ceased after only four of the seven stories. You may be interested to know, however, that the entire Chronicles have been dramatized on radio not once, but twice. The BBC and Focus on the Family have each done their own versions, with the latter hosted by Doug Gresham, C.S. Lewis's stepson.
